It does sound like a lot of fun. I used to go to parties at Route 66 in Chicago, which is (was?) a roller rink, but they were never innovative enough to break out the roller skates to make it an extra good time. Too bad too, I could have loved to hear Paul Johnson's Feel my M.F. Bass! while skating around in circles in a less than desirable state of mind ;) I would go to KDJ's after party just to get a bite to eat. Soul/Comfort foods would really hit the spot after a whole day of technoing. There's an even more obvious techno influence in the latest Kerri Chandler and Joey Negro/Scattering Stars (a LOT like Los Hermanos). Speaking of minimal, I have a Terrence Dixon project coming out next month or early fall on EndtoenD. It seems Kenny Dixon Jr.'s live set has been taken off the festival lineup. Anyone know if this is a temporary thing or not? Also, on the recent topic of good house music this memorial with the knowledge that Rob Hood ihas been a topic on here lately. I thought I'd share my club favorites right now. I'm all about this guy Mr. V on Louie Vega's record label Vega records. His, 'jus dance (sole channel mix) and somethin' with jazz are getting tons of play by deep house jocks and for me they are the perfect compromise between the direct simplicity of deep tracks and the warmth and familiarity of the smoother house stuff. They might be too jazzy or smooth for this list, but I definitely hear a techno influence in the sparse beat and use of dubbed out chords. Don't expect the eeriness of KDJ or theo, but top tunes in my book. For a good perspective of what the top deep house tracks getting play in da club this year I recommend Louie Vega's Ritual Dance mix. All well produced floor stormers for the deep house club scene, which, for better or worse, dominates the nightlife out here.

There's an even more obvious techno influence in the latest Kerri Chandler and Joey Negro/Scattering Stars (a LOT like Los Hermanos). I agree Mike. Not heard the Joey Negro, but that kerri chandler has a STRONG los hermanos feel. guess this is the product of some of those nyc dj's caning some of the more recent ur/los hermanos techno stuff - this stuff is quite big in their clubs at the mo? he kinda takes the strings from a record of that ilk, loops them up to make it a bit more obvious, but adds his nice bass and percussion. i like the record i think. _ - End of message text This e-mail is sent by the above named in their individual, non-business capacity and is not on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. Re: (313) KDJ: Behind the sheet
Hey hey List. Been sick lately, so been away from the computer. Moodymann passed through Manchester last Friday, his first time. He f**king killed it. Good good party, all provided by www.eyesdown.net The party was at the Roadhouse, which is a little gig venue in Manchester. It's good for a proper party though, low ceiling, basement gaff - not too big or small, just right for about 250 people. Very dark, bar at the entrance on one side, big dancefloor. Tickets for this sold out in about three hours flat, so everyone got on it early doors. The queue filtered in to him dropping mid tempo boogie (he played the whole night 11 - '3'), some fairly non descript stuff, from behind a screen at the front of the stage with some projection business going on... So, it filled up pretty quick, and he got on the mic, bigging it up, telling us to drink more beer and going on about the football and that... I was steaming by this point, but did my best to sink a couple more just for him... Anyway, the dancefloor fills, and everyone's getting down, bumping together cos it's packed and the mic crackles into action at about 11.45: Yo yo yo yo, Ok, I'm gonna play you a record I first heard played by Mojo in Detroit back in '82. We was driving along and had to stop the car for this s**t The opening bars of Cybotrons Alleys Of Your Mind bust through the speakers. I lose my mind and I don't think I stopped dancing till whatever time the party finished. Next up, Telex Moscow Disco, which a) I wasn't expecting, and b) sounded god through the extra speakers added for the party. After that, I don't remember alot, but he played Syl Johnson Is it Because I'm Black, some disco version of I Shot The Sherrif that I didn't know Some great boogie, Pink Floyd The Wall, White Stripes, some house records (the new still music), I also vaguely remember him getting on the mic saying he was playing some new stuff he'd been working on. I remember it being good, pretty leftfield, more techno, but I don't remember how it actually sounded. Kelvin told me he gave Shake a big shout OK, I'm gonna play a record by my good friend Anthony Shake Shakir from Detroit and everyone went mad It was a great party, that much I remember So, er, the screen got pulled down about 2, and there he was, sat playing records. Supposedly he was throwing cd's into the crowd. My mate said he gave away half his record bag too. I don't know what I was doing at this point, wouldn't have minded a cd. He didn't seem to mind the screen got torn down either, everyone was going bonkers anyway. Dunno what time it finished, good party. Hope he comes back. I think he enjoyed it. BIG SHOUT to Kelvin, Jon Jack, big shout to Kenny Dixon Jnr, a good party host. Seems like a gentleman too. Alex p.s. Francis, you're slack, where's your report? ; ) p.p.s. and you Tim for that matter p.p.p.s and Danny if you're still here p.p.p.p.s some of those 'moody van' (stolen ford transit) quotes might be wrong, I was drunk. After that, I don't remember alot, but he played Syl Johnson Is it Because I'm Black, some disco version of I Shot The Sherrif that I didn't know Some great boogie, Pink Floyd The Wall, White Stripes I think all of those were played at Plastic People as well. The funniest part was when he got on the mic and said, this guy asked me to play some Detroit sh*t, I been playing three Parliament jams in a row. It doesn't get any more Detroit than this. Then he played the White Stripes immediately after and said, This guy wants some Detroit sh*t, here's some Detroit sh*t! When these white boys played in Detroit there was 80% niggaz up in that joint, or something to that effect. I didn't catch any of his own stuff at Plastic People - just a track from the forthcoming Pirahnahead album, which was very nice. I haven't been sold on most of that stuff so far (just the remix of Diviniti), but this was excellent. Oh, and another funny moment was when he said, this is some hot sh*t from my boy L.A. Williams (and it was). He then pulled the needle off the record, got on the mic and said, when I first heard my boy L.A. Williams played this I told him he had to give me that record. I told him I was gonna play it in London, and he bet me $100 I wouldn't pull the needle off the record and say what record it was. So he owe me a $100 now. You're all witnesses (thought I should relay that one on just in case anyone's listening). ;) As Alex says, forgive the liberal use of quotation marks please. p.s. Francis, you're slack, where's your report? ; ) I just didn't want to wind you lot up by saying yeah he was OK - good but nothing really special! One thing that strikes me reading Tristan's report from London is that it sounds like he played pretty much the same set, can't be too critical of this as obviously you can only take so many records with you when you cross the Atlantic, however if someone's going to play something like The Wall (which didn't do it for me personally) you like to feel there's a bit of spontaneity there - as with Then he played the White Stripes and said, This guy wants some Detroit sh*t, here's some Detroit sh*t! (London) in Manchester it was somebody asked me for some Detroit sh*t followed by the White Stripes but don't get me wrong, I'm not down on the gig, it was fun and people were having a good time.

big snip That story about Kenny Larkin is salutory to me. Alas I feel it's only reflective of what things are really like in'the world' outside, this particular cocoon of futuristic music. Sometimes it's wise to remind yourself that as well as being entertainers, these artists are often men (usually, and the gender is important) with a message. And it pays to go that extra mile to try to realize what it is. Peace, k

RE: (313) J.A.N. (was: Re: (313) KDJ
g*d damn racial profiling - How in the hell could they tell the registration was bad? If his driving is fine they should not have any reason to run a check. They see a scruffy looking black man driving through BH in a nice car and decide to run a check on the license - as far as I know there is nothing on the outside of a car that gives any info on the registration - if the tabs are good then there's nothing wrong. So, there is no way for them to know - from the outside of the car - that Kenny's license is suspended. Obviously there wasn't anything wrong with the registration because the cop never mentioned it again (according to his story). The issue was then his license suspension - not the registration. (Just hours before his comedy showcase at the Laugh Factory!!!) I'll let Kenny pick up the tale from here (apologies to those on Friendster): I'm on Santa Monica Boulevard in a brand new white Mercedes Benz CLK 320, that my friend let me keep for a week while she's out of town. I've driven this route almost every day in my own cars (BMW, Porsche), and never had a problem. But, guess what happens? I get pulled over by the Beverly Hills Police!! I'm shocked because I wasn't speeding, traffic is heavy, my seatbelt is on, blah, blah... The cop approaches the car and says, Your driving is fine, but I don't know about the registration. Can I see a copy of your insurance, registration, and driver's license? I say, Well, this isn't my car. A friend let me borrow it for the week. She didn't leave her registration, or insurance with me. Oh, here it is, and here is my license. Now, mind you, I'm wearing sweaty, workout clothes. I have on a black skull cap, and I'm totally unshaven. To him, I'm lookin' like, well... you get the picture. He goes back to his bike to check everything, while I'm chillin' in the car. Ten minutes go by, and I look in my rear view mirror to see what's taking so long. When I look up again, I see this paddy wagon pull up behind me!!! The other cop gets out, confers with his colleague for another 10 minutes. I'm thinking, what's going on? So, finally the dude walks back to the car and says, ``What's your social security number?'', I said ``Why?'' He says, ``Your driving privledges are suspended in the State of California. You have a warrant out for your arrest from San Bernadino county stemming from an unpaid speeding ticket you received last year. They sent you a notice to appear, and you didn't, so. Step out of the car, place your hands behind your head.'' I almost passed out on the spot!!! Boy, I wish there was someone there taking a picture, just so I could see the look on my face when that cop put those handcuffs on me in front of full-on rush hour traffic. For those who don't know me, I am the squarest man you will ever know. I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't do drugs. But, here I am in the back of a paddy wagon about to go to jail, on the biggest nite of my comedy career!! Who did I screw over in my previous life?? I'm sitting in the back of the paddy wagon, while they search my friend's car, and I'm hoping she doesn't have anything in her car that might complicate matters, but they find nothing. So, they take me to JAIL, and book me, fingerprint me, take mug shots, put me in prison overalls, the whole nine... I'm in shock by this time, because I learn that if I don't make bail ($5,000 cash), I will be staying with them for 2 days, and then transported up to San Bernadino to their jail, until my court date. ``What! But I have a show in 3 hours!'' ``Not if you don't make bail buddy.'' So, I had to call my parents, who both flew in from Alabama, and Michigan to see their son perform at this world famous comedy club, to bail me out of jail. A year ago, the same thing happened to me. I got pulled over for speeding and, it turned out, due to an unpaid parking ticket in SF (!) from years ago, I'd actually had my license suspended (and didn't know about it, 'cos they sent it to my previous address and the forwarding had long since expired) and I, too, had a warrant for my arrest. Did I get carted off to jail? Did I get fingerprinted, mug shot'ed, put in prison overalls like Kenny Larkin did? No. I got sent home on my own recognizance. I'm disgusted at what happened to Kenny. Kenny Dixon Jr : Soul Sounds (Soul City) - apparently re-released fr '96. Anyone with any further ingo, it wd be appreciated It's cool, buy it!! erm, descriptions.. 4 tracker, all sample based stuff. Fairly raw - this was an early-ish production and it's kind of before the moodymann sound developed a bit. Used to get battered at our club. Recommended. You have probably heard it Ken I would imagine, you'll know when you get it. I also have a feeling that some of the tracks were used on another ep, albeit slightly different versions. Maybe on that Music Is... 12??? anyone else remember? _ - End of message text This e-mail is sent by the above named in their individual, non-business capacity and is not on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers. I also have a feeling that some of the tracks were used on another ep, albeit slightly different versions. Maybe on that Music Is... 12??? anyone else remember? Yeah, the B2 track on the Soul City release ('Midnights') is basically a stripped-down mix of the A1 track on the first Music Is... 12 ('I Like To Know'). Both records are amazing, some of my favourite KDJ stuff. The Soul City release is still in the box and 'Midnights' still gets regular airings when I play out... Cheers, Tom

Then there's also U Can Dance if U Want 2... all prince cut-ups but pretty uptempo and some are pretty aggressive, and not disco sounding at all (to me). And Dem Young Sconies (sp?) on Planet E, which I think someone else already mentioned. That track mixes well with just about everything: italo, techno, house, disco, even has that Nitzer Ebb kind of great simple raw bassline... very versatile track! OK someone tell what the Moodymann in my wagon 12 sounds like on Peacefrog?? and while we're on Peacefrog, what are the couple of Ron Trent releases on the label like? I've fallen hopelessly behind with the Peacefrog lately, too much to keep up... Peace, Matt - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313] KDJ
I didn't explain myself well. I love house (my record collection is nearly all house) I'm just trying to find out from this list if there are any KDJ records out there for me. The thing is I don't like too many vocals and prefer good beats and catchy melodies - the sort of stuff on Classic - Derrick Carter DJ Sneak are good examples. Are there any KDJ records that I could buy that would fit in with that sort of sound? he has done some techno tracks. besides, this list isn't just about techno...its about house too - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [313] KDJ
I didn't slate KDJ, I didn't say you shouldn't be posting about him on 313. I've just noticed that everyone seems to like him on 313 but the KDJ tunes i've heard seem quite far removed from techno - disco sounds soulful vocals. hmm the kdj release Analog could be taken as techno - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
