(313) my last DEMF? thanks, Downlow crew
I had a good time at the fest, even though there was too much minimal for my taste. Not enough magic moments, soul, electro, african-americans, olskool 313 people, europeans/techno-tourists, booths, or vegan food (what happened to the Indian restaurant?). I'm not complaining really cuz I understand that the music I came to hear above all else (UR, electro, Three Chairs, deep detroit house/techno) cannot sustain a big festival anymore (not that it ever really could). I'd be suprised if Paxahau broke even, so maybe minimal can't sustain one either. I'm not sure I want to go to a self-sustaining big festival then, cuz I think it would involve a lot of negative, hateful, ignorant music, like Eminem, the kind our country likes these days. So that may be my last DEMF, if it isn't the last DEMF period, anyways. Maybe there will be a lil Downlow annual fest one of these years *wink*, like in midwinter so we northerners could have our WMC alternative? Or just an alternative to DEMF in the park in the day and warehouse at night in the Detroit area for us last of the dying breed. I still had a great time and heard some good stuff, so thanks to Paxahau. Blaze, Mike Geiger, Kruse Control, Ronin Selecta, Jeremy Ayro Ellis and John Arnold (esp. at I Love House where they killed it!), Neil Landstrumm, Starski and Clutch (doing the only real electro set I heard), Deadbeat, Mark Grant, Lil Louie Vega, and Krikor had me going. Sims, Dan Bell, Modeselektor and SmashTV were very good at Substance 3. Did Acid Junkies even play at Olskool 2? The ride home inspired some lyrics, which, who knows, may wind up on a Downlow release with some modifications, in the future *hint hint* over some ghetto tech beats TEAR UP THE RENTAL Through the mean streets of Detroit, we drove it way too fast Now we gotta return it, as a pile of plastic, steel, and glass Tear up the rental, rental, rental Laurie thinks we're gonna die, she's having nightmares JP's popped so many diet pills, he doesn't even f'n care Tear up the rental, rental, rental Toe ate some DEMF food and a space cookie, and dropped a nasty poot We should just burn the car and take a plane, but we don't got the loot Tear up the rental, rental, rental Jim is deadweight in the back, smelling like a prison Cynthia's prolly thinkin this hellride, oughtta give our crew religion Tear up the rental, rental, rental Next time I'm wearing a football helmet, when I'm tearing up a rental since I'm unemployed I don't have medical or dental TEAR UP THE RENTAL! well, if you're hubby is the folk-music lovin' type then I could suggest some middle ground (depending on how purist he may be) check out Jauna Molina, anything on the Melodic label, Morr Music, Beth Orton there's a whole genre that's been badly tagged with the name folktronica also see The Detroit Experiment (jazz electronic by Carl Craig), Broadcast, Blockhead, the Books, Mum (Icelandic band), Four Tet, Isan also see stuff that's at the Big Chill music festival - usually Movement also has some nice crossover acts as well MEK [EMAIL PROTECTED] a.eduTo: 313@hyperreal.org cc: 08/05/2004 07:30 Subject: (313) Thanks! Re: (313) Alexander Kowalski's (was RE: (313) thanks, y'all)
yeah, I can recommend both of Kowalski's albums - 'echoes' and 'progress', echos reminds me a lot of purposemaker style techno, progress has better productions, but IMHO the vocal tracks are very weak. however the collaboration album 'reasons' with Denis and Diego is even better one of my favourite albums of last year. oh, and the kowalski remix of agoria's 'la 11eme marche' is also fantastic. I was wondering what list members think of agoria - I've heard 'la 11eme marche' in a number of very different clubs - from a warehouse party to a nasty little club here in southampton, it sounded very cheesy in the bad club and very powerful in the warehouse so I had to grab the vinyl :) they did a v.nice mix cd 'circle room three turn' that has a lot of 313 related tracks including some transmat material IIRC - was really impressed by it. matt :) . (313) Alexander Kowalski's (was RE: (313) thanks, y'all)
I don't know much of his stuff but i did happen to catch him live in Hamburg a few months ago. Damn fine live set with the microphone and live vocoding. One of the more impressive live sets i have seen. Funky sounds also. Scattered Snares is really nice. The Nubian Mindz cut on there is really wacky, but I think the Somatik track is the one for me. What is really killing me though is Theo Parrish's 'Falling Up' on the Beatdown com, and the Rick Wilhite track, but 'Falling Up' really does it for me. Maybe the best Theo Parrish track yet??? Tristan Watkins: That new Convextion on Downlow sounds really amazing! it does 'stiletto caress' woohoo! and how about that new duplex record haven't heard anyone about that. IT'S GREAT! as you'd come to expect from duplex [it's called 'autoload'on clone] Per Marsel's recommendation the Moxie disco re-edits also sounded really nice. that '...sins..' [forgot the title of the track, but it had 'sins' in it] is that a re-edit of 'anger' from the 'seven deadly sins' lp by rinder & lewis? There is so much good music coming out right now it's disgusting. hear, hear! right at the time that i'm eating pancakes for diner once or twice a week because i'm broke... and there's tons more to come out: recloose rmx of a meikbar track on rushhour, stuff on kindred spirits [can't wait for 'the kissing game' lp by peven everett], the s#!t load of releases stewart just mentioned on digital soul. and last but not least, someone on the submerge messageboard mentioned that there's tons of stuff to be comming from submerge before the end of this year!! jurren _ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. Sorry for this late message, but I have been sooo busy and tired I didn't manage to do it earlier. A big thanks to everybody who helped and accompanied me and my girlfriend Annick when we were in Detroit. A special thanks to Kelli Kavanaugh for picking us up at the airport and her kindness and hospitality. Thanks to Natan for driving us around and for his dry humor. Thanks to the Dutch guys (Hans, Otto, Pieter, Klaas-Jan) for their friendship and expertise and simply a good time. Thanks Steven Lammers for offering to drive us around on Tuesday and Wednesday. We managed fine Steve, didn't wanna bother you. Thanks anyway. Whilst reading each one makes me wish I'd been there even more (like so many other folks - next year!), it's been a pleasure to experience the festival through your accounts, so thanks for that. Actually... that kinda sounds all past tense doesn't it? Hi all, Thanks so much to everyone who made it out to the PLURkids Club Night on friday. It was so much fun doing something that we knew couldn't get shut down. We even had fun playing with the undercovers that came in. I mean, come ON: if you want to be undercover, don't be so obvious! This one woman looked to be in her mid thirties, with clothes from the eighties, a long black leather coat, clutching her purse carefully, and asking everyone who appeared to be having a good time, "Do you have any ecstacy to sell me?", or "Who has the drugs here?". She asked one of my friends, "Are you on ecstacy?" (he wasn't), and then "Oh. Well, who has some?" (he didn't know)...I told her she wasn't going to find that stuff here, it's a drug free club night, not a party. So then her two male companions (also really not enjoying the music at all, and examining everyone carefully) proceeded to ask every under-21 female they could find if they would "like me to buy a drink for you? It's ok if you're underage, I can do it". No one accepted any drinks. Then we tried to get them to have fun. They were humorless, and left within a half hour. Thanks for contributing to our take for the night, coppers! hehe. Anyway, a drama-less evening, and it was fun putting it on. I managed to get Steven Sacks to agree to come back to the house and do a deep set, and he went for three hours! It was a journey from the present to the past, culminating in tracks from 93' and 94' that blew my mind. Thanks once again to all who came out, and congrats to Dillon, KG, and Tracey for their success too! The map thing worked well (once we got them).
