Re: [offish]Volume of mail

2017-10-05 Thread Roger Reed – Illus House via 4D_Tech
I was shocked to see how few attendees there were at the Tour stop in New
Jersey a couple years ago. My impression is that the developer- and user-base
is way too small, considering how good 4D is. But considering the endless
learning curve, and obsolescence of earlier databases, I shouldn’t be so
surprised. The determination of our great leaders to improve the product is
both frustrating and inspiring.

Nevertheless, considering the community as a whole — including Wakanda — and
the eventuality of two things: the integration of 4D with Wakanda somehow, and
the 4D command set becoming its own robust language somehow, it could someday
catch fire as a widely appealing platform. That’s my hope.

Re: [offish]Volume of mail

2017-10-05 Thread Richard Wright via 4D_Tech
Perhaps it’s partially due to the fact that some post mysteriously never get
through and also do not bounce back. I’m having that problem right now with
another message I’ve tried posting twice and am waiting to hear back from the
list boss. In between, I posted a “test” message which went through immediately.

Re: [offish]Volume of mail

2017-10-05 Thread Jeffrey Kain via 4D_Tech
Correlation does not imply causation.

We have a lot of 4D developers working here, but I'm on the only who
participates actively in the list. Also, 4D has a lot fewer "issues" these days
than in the old days.

The user base is definitely a lot smaller compared to the gay 90s, but we've
all known that for awhile. 4D remains alive and kicking and improving the
product in surprising ways.

Re: [offish]Volume of mail

2017-10-05 Thread Randy Jaynes via 4D_Tech
I think we’re all too lazy to get up and move all the way over to the 4D forums.

I do go there for research and find the forums much more active, and with far
many more users than we see here.

And with 4D themselves pushing us in that direction, I see more and more of us
who have been on this list for 20+ years posting less and less here.

I don’t think it’s a diminished community because the forums certainly seem to
be thriving, and I have to admit the ability to add links and images and so on
makes it easier to illustrate our problems. What I _don’t_ like is that it’s
much more work to get it done.

I think mailing lists are just a thing of the past and a few of us are holding
on for all we’re worth.

I've noticed the same thing.

Sadly I think your suspicions are founded.

4D doesn't share much information in the way of marketing statistics.

[offish]Volume of mail

2017-10-05 Thread Chip Scheide via 4D_Tech
I know that many of you have been on this list for a long time, as have
I.

I have noticed, over the past couple of years, that the volume of email
on this list has dropped - a lot -. It used to be, that if I was out of
the office, or whatever, and unable/unwilling to check email for 1 or
more days, I could expect to see ~100 emails/day from this list. While
I have not done an actual count, I believe that currently this list
sees, on average about 100 emails a week.

While this might be a good thing (less bugs to report/talk about etc),
I find it troubling in that it likely reflects a significantly
diminished use of the 4D product.

RE: 4D v16.2 false record locks

2017-10-05 Thread Dennis, Neil via 4D_Tech
> Now in the context of this thread, this appears to be an anomaly?

Not an anomaly.

I have found the same great service, even with a tough bug... we had a problem
with web packets not being delivered. We had wireshark captures and web logs
showing the problem but could not reproduce it outside of our environment.

I submitted the issue with 4D, the worked with me and within a few days had a
system on their end to be able to reproduce the problem and reported it as a
bug. I'm expecting the 16.3 to have the fix.

Other bugs I have submitted have also been fixed in a timely manner and I was
kept in the loop the entire process.

I think they are doing a great job.

Neil

RE: What to do about users who won't follow instructions?

2017-10-05 Thread Stephen J. Orth via 4D_Tech
Everyone,

Well, I never anticipated so much interest in our DMM Training Center concept,
so it took me a little off-guard.

Due to all the requests, I have shared a couple screen shots of this at the
following:

https://www.screencast.com/t/7hfZHYefaXbq

A brief overview of what you are looking at:

The first image is an example of a video we produced, in this case it concerns
how to install new license codes. If you look at the HL on the left you can
see what type of documents are available by category, along with the type of
document. All you do is select the document of interest and it is displayed.
In the example shown above, the video is loaded and automatically starts
playing.

The second screen shot of what you receive when selecting a PDF document.

I just wanted to develop something which was easy to access from within our
sofwtare, plus the ability for our organization to dynamically update everyone
at the same time, without having to release new versions.

Let me know what you think...

Best,

Steve
