Good Idea.
v16R6 should really be called V17Beta6. That´s what it is after all.
Would save a lot of confusion.

Hi Doug,

Perhaps a typo, but you actually need the Developer license to be able to go to
design mode. the Unlimited Desktop license is the one you need to include if
you build single user apps.

No, it would just add more confusion and it wouldn’t be accurate. First, v17
means that you have complete set of features defined, “beta” means that they
are all implemened and in testing. This is completely opposite of what R line
is about:

V16 R1 - it is v16 feature set plus features A and B
V16 R2 - it is v16 R1 feature set plus features C and D plus bug fixes for
features A and B
V16 R3 - it is v16 R2 feature set plus features E and F plus bug fixes for
features A, B, C, D
V16 R4 - it is v16 R3 feature set plus features G and H plus bug fixes for
features A, B, C, D, E, F
V16 R5 - it is v16 R4 feature set plus features I and J plus bug fixes for
features A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H
V16 R6 - it is v16 R5 feature set plus features K and L plus bug fixes for
features A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J
V17 - it is v16 R6 feature set plus features M and N plus bug fixes for
features A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L

I do not agree. The problem is a final client has bought a v16 version but
does not have access to features announced and touted as v16 features. It
is difficult to say to the client he must now update to v17 to have these
new v16 features.

But there not announced as v16 features, that is simply not true, no one ever
said that. On the contrary, it is explicitly said and written many times that
those features are upcoming features in next major version.

So it IS a V17 beta after all...

Maybe all the folks at 4D understand how those R version numbering works, but

No it isn’t. If it is beta that would mean you would have all of planned
features for v17 implemented and still in testing within 4D, in R version there
is beta phase of R version which is done and the subset of new fetures is fully
tested by QA and Partners before release. For example, current R version is v17
R3, v17 R4 is in beta. Calling it v17 beta 3 would not solve the problem for
those that are confused, on the contrary, it would add more confusion to it.

It seems that you don’t have a problem with nomenclature, but the all R version
approach of doing things incrementally.

Is Windows Server 2008R2 a beta of Windows Server 2012? Nope. It's an

Hi,

For me too it is not confusing. Actually to call it V17 beta is not only more
confusing but it is wrong.

Actually you can see v17 as a 16 R7 if you like.

R release make it easier to go through the new features 4D implement by having
them little by little instead to have a full load of new features after 1 and
half year. I really think this way of doing is more performant and more nice
for developers to test things and to give feedback.

I think it improve the quality of 4D.

I definitely agree that 4D's new internal processes and continuous delivery

Always there to greet developers and 4D Partners at every 4D Summit too.

Delay Worker Process

2019-03-13 Thread Cannon Smith via 4D_Tech
Hi Everyone,

I’m trying to do some quick and dirty logging to track down an issue at a
customer’s site. As part of that I need to log some information to a file,
always on the server. I figured the simplest would be to call a method each
time I need to log some information and pass the info to it. The method has the
Execute on Server property set so all logging happens on the server. I don’t
want anything tied up waiting for the logging to happen, so I have the method
call a worker process (on the server) and pass in the relevant information to
it. The worker is responsible to run some checks, ensure the correct file
exists, write the information to the file, and possibly send a Slack message.
Using a worker also ensures that a file is not being opened by multiple
processes at the same time.

So far all this works as hoped for and was simple to code. The problem is that
the worker process needs to run the checks a few seconds _after_ the initial
request to log information happened. Since the worker is just in a cooperative
process I figured I could add DELAY PROCESS. But it seems not to work.

I could re-engineer the whole thing to use a background process in a loop on
the server and some IP arrays or a table, but was hoping to keep it simpler.
Does anyone know how to pause a worker process for a few seconds?

This is v17.1HF1.

Thanks.

Error code 183(W132)

2019-03-13 Thread JOHN BAUGHMAN via 4D_Tech
One of my deployed 4D server has suddenly started throwing this error (see
below). When the error is being displayed 4D server is not visible. When the ok
button is clicked 4D server becomes visible.

A quick google search finds some discussion about this error independent of 4D
and one provides a link to a utility call (Error 183) repair utility.

Can anyone shed some light on this error and perhaps why it is being thrown by
this particular 4D server.

Thanks,

John
