Re: [AI] Austek, Samsung Ready Ultra Mobile PCs
Hi kiran, What I gather from your mail is that although jaws and window-eyes can be installed on these devices, mobile speak pocket will support it better. is it so? or codefactory may come out with a different screen reader altogether for these UMPCs? Regards Kaja, Kiran wrote: These are essentially laptop computers although at half the size. Although the article talks of Windows XP Tablet Edition, virtually any Windows OS, including XP home and even XP Pro can be installed on them. The form factor is small because of the lack of a big screen and a full sized keyboard. The devices usually contain a thumb keyboard which has to be used with both thumbs. Of course, external keyboards can be attached because the devices do contain USB ports and other connectivity options like Bluetooth. Theoritically, Jaws and WindowEyes should run on these devices without any problem. I can imagine conflicts occuring in the keyboard handler part but these kinds of problems can be solved quite easily. Infact, GWMicro, the makers of WindowEyes also sell an ultra mobile PC. The hardware is the same as OKO UMPC but they rebrand it and increase the cost. Oh, I also forgot to mention that these devices have a touch screen to make it easier for sighted folks to enter data and navigate. I see good potential in these devices. They can almost do all that a laptop can and yet be portable. And if the screen reader manufacturers are serious in adapting their products to support this platform, they can make real good use of the touch screen too. You can divide the touch screen into a number of easily identifiable blocks and assign various functions to them. But for FreedomScientific, supporting UMPC will have a direct negative inpact on the sales of Pacmate, and so they will go real slow on it. Watch out for companies like Code Factory though. I think the GPS systems would ultimately benifit the visually impaired too. Regards, Aruni. Vikas Kapoor wrote: Austek, Samsung Ready Ultra Mobile PCs Sep 19, 2006 Asustek Computer will begin selling its first ultra mobile PC, the R2H, worldwide by the end of this month, while Samsung Electronics is readying one that eschews Intel microprocessors in favor of Via Technologies chips. Asustek's ultra mobile UMPC is designed with all the functions of a laptop, including a folding typing pad, as well as other devices, such as a global positioning system (GPS) so it can sit on the dashboard of a user's car to map the way home. The R2H runs Microsoft Windows XP Tablet Edition OS on a 900MHz Intel Celeron M microprocessor. It measures 9.3 by 5.3 inches, about half the size of a laptop, and weighs just under 2 pounds. The OS allows touch navigation with a stylus on its 7-inch screen, but the models on display Monday at a news conference in Taipei were difficult to use. Company representatives said the display models were for testing only, the reason for the sluggish performance. Like most UMPCs , the R2H is an Internet device, connecting through 802.11b/g Wireless LAN, and supports Bluetooth. For security, Asustek added an infrared fingerprint identification system to keep users' data safe from thieves. Although the suggested retail price of the R2H bound for the Taiwan market is $1117, it will come in different configurations users can choose from, so prices will be flexible. Asustek will offer models with different sized hard drives, ranging from 20GB to 60GB in capacity. The standard edition will also come with just a two-cell battery, for about two hours of use before needing a recharge. Users will be able to select a four-cell battery as well, at an added cost. The device is Windows Vista compatible. The company also launched a new tablet PC, the R1F, and expects to produce a total of 3000 units of the two devices each month, said Benson Lin, head of sales in the Asia Pacific for Asustek, at a news conference in Taipei. Samsung's next gen Samsung Electronics, of South Korea, is readying a new UMPC with a 7-inch screen that uses a 1.0GHz Via C7 microprocessor, but hasn't set a launch date. The device, dubbed the Q1B, will come with 40GB of storage space, WLAN and Bluetooth, and will weigh 1.7 pounds, according to Samsung's Web site . The Q1B will come with a better battery than
Re: [AI] Mobile Phone Can Read Books
the title of the article is misleading. As far as I can understand, this phone would play mp3 audio books and will not read the books in EText format as the title suggests. This becomes clear towards the end of the news item. Regards Aruni.; Rohan wrote: Mobile Phone Can Read Books By Kim Tae-gyu, Staff Reporter Korea Times, South Korea, September 19, 2006 LG Electronics, the world's fourth-largest cell phone vendor, has added another compelling feature to the mobile handset - reading books for the visually impaired. The Seoul-based company yesterday started marketing the model, the LF1300, through LG Telecom, the country's smallest wireless operator, at around 400,000 won. Only the blind, visually-impaired and dyslexic can buy the talking phone after presenting a government certificate at sales outlets of LG Telecom. ``The LF1300 is the world's first mobile handset that is capable of reading books for the print-disabled, who otherwise could not enjoy them, LG Vice President Cho Sung-ha said. ``This is not about making money at all but about contributing to society. We will continue to put forth efforts to bridge the digital divide for the disabled, Cho said. Users of the gadget can download approximately 300 audio books from the Internet site of LG Sangam Library to their handsets in two ways. One is to access the digital library's Web site ( www.lg.or.kr ) on a computer specially designed for the blind to get the audio books and transfer them to cell phones. The other is to download the digital books directly with cell phones through the wireless network by touching a hot key on the LF1300 handset. Both methods are free of charge. On top of its unique feature of reading books, the LF1300 is not inferior to the contemporary top-line phones in both outlooks and functionalities. The sleek 16-millimeter-thick gizmo is armed with an MP3 player and a Bluetooth headset, which enables users to listen to the music or talks without a cord. The user interface of the LF1300 is also customized for the blind, enabling handset users to control it through a voice guidance system. However, there is a hitch because the phone's internal memory of 17 megabytes is small even for a single audio book file, which takes up 80 MB on average. As a result, a high-volume external memory, which is available at electronics shops, is a must for the talking book services. [AI] diabetes
Diabetes Diabetes Diabetes is classified into four catagories with slightly varied therapeutic protocols that our customers have seen phenomenal results with. Diabetes is a major health concern globally. According to the National Daibetes Association, 16 million people in the U.S. have diabetes and less than 1/2 aren' t even aware that they have it. Diabetes ranks as the number 4 cause death in America with 178,000 assocaited deaths annually. 18 - 24,000 people lose their eyesight and more than 20,000 diabetics are treated for renal disease. Diabetes is the most frequent cause of non- traumatic loss of limbs each year. The protocol for Brittle diabetes, Diabetes Insipidus, Diabetes Mellitus Type I, Diabetes Mellitus Type II are excellent specific complementary therapies. Central to all kits is the DNA insulin product that is homeopathically proven to re-teach the pancreas optimal insulin production thereby correcting hereditary diabetic predispositions.* DNA insulin contains energetic imprints from optimally working pancreatic tissues, non-diabetic DNA and Insulin and serves to remind the body of correct pancreatic function. When taken over a period of time the body begins to relearn insulin production. DNA Insulin manufactured exclusively by PHP labs is truly a breakthrough in Diabetes therapies and resonance homeopathy. It is not neccesary to continue taking DNA Insulin past a 3 or 6 month adaptation period. We believe in addressing root causes and not just supressing symptoms. The kits all also contain PROZN-GL US Patent # 5,834,032(Cyclo his-pro plus Zinc) which showed improvements in biochemical measures of glucose metabolism in double-blind studies at UCLA. Cyclo (his-pro) is a naturally occurring cyclic dipeptide consisting of histidyl and proline. Concentrations of cyclo (his-pro) have been found in the blood, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), semen, brain, spinal cord, and gastrointestinal tract of humans. Studies suggest that cyclo (his-pro) is one of numerous compounds in the prostate gland that regulate the intestinal absorption of zinc. Both animals and humans with diabetes have altered zinc metabolism and zinc is known to play a key role in synthesis, storage, and secretion of insulin. Zinc is also required for proper glucose utilization by muscle and fat cells. PROZN_GL enhances both zinc absorption and glucose utilization, which results in a significant decline in both blood and urine glucose levels of diabetic patients.* It appears that cyclo (his-pro) is an important new agent that can help improve glucose metabolism in patients with type diabetes. It is important to monitor your blood sugar and insulin and eat a proper diet while on these complementary protocols. These products are not a substitute for any pharmaceuticals that your Dr. may have prescribed. Hypoglycemics and Borderline Diabetes Hypoglycemics and Borderline Diabetes: The kit for hypoglycemics and borderline diabetics contains ProZnGL, DNA Insulin and Glucogen Complex ProZn GL US Patent # 5,834,032. PROZN_GL enhances both zinc absorption and glucose utilization, which results in a significant decline in both blood and urine glucose levels of diabetic patients.* C19 DNA - Aids in correcting hereditary diabetes by re-teaching the body insulin production SGC Glucogen Complex 120 capsules. Is a metabolic product that helps to regulate sugar levels and insulin. Dr. vijeta To unsubscribe send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject unsubscribe. I saw this device. It is essentially a bar code reader. The concept is that every page of the book would have a bar-code on one of the corners which would have complete text of the page coded in this bar-code. Size of this bar-code is about one CM by one CM. there is a small bar code scanner. By a press of a button, the bar code reader scanns the bar code and starts reading the text coded in that bar-code. In Koria they are having some publications with such bar codes. It would read only the books that have such bar codes. The cost of this too is quite prohabitive right now. The player looks like a crude version of the iPod with controls arranged in the familiar click wheel style. It supports English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, by installing TTS (Text to Speech) engine it can support additional languages. It plays music too as no modern day gizmo is complete without MP3 playback. [AI] A glitch in JAWS
Dear Folks: For the past two days, there seems to be some problem in my system. I find it difficult to say if it is with JAWS or with MSO or Windows (XP). When I try and open word doc by going to the start menu and pressing run, I hear JAWS read 'menu active'. Though the file opens, nothing is read out after this message. I have confirmed from my colleagues that there isn't actually any dialogue box active on the screen when JAWS gives this message. Strangely enough, if I go to IE and try and read web pages, I am unable to do that and JAWS just reads out the url (example http://www.telegraph.co.uk/xyz... etc). I have to go to JAWS, close it (even then the message 'would like to quit JAWS for Windows? Isn't read out, just the ok at the end), and only when I restart JAWS do I get rid of this problem temporarily. However, the moment I open word I get this problem again. Kindly tell me what this rather mysterious problem is and how I can get rid of this? [AI] Roll-up screens 'moving closer'
Roll-up screens 'moving closer' img/laun One of the forms the metal can take is a tube More details Roll-up laptop screens may be a step closer, according to scientists. A Cambridge team have developed metal structures that can morph from flat screens into tubes and other shapes. They say in the future the structures could form the basis for electronic displays that could be rolled-up and placed in a bag or pocket. The scientists believe the material could also be used for re-usable packaging, roll-up keyboards and self-erecting temporary shelters. The metal sheets, made from copper alloys, work without the need for moving parts such as hinges, latches or locks. They snap from one shape into another, from a flat sheet to a coil, bent or twisted structure. Dr Keith Seffen, the lead researcher from the Department of Engineering at Cambridge University, said they got the idea from children's toy flick or snap bracelets which transform from a straight strip into a coil around the wrist. The principle behind the shape-shifters is manipulating the stress within the structure. MORPHING METAL Infographic One of the morphing processes involves a dimpled structure: 1 Invertible dimples are created on surface 2 Depressing a narrow band causes metal to crease 3 When all are inverted, sheet coils up Source: ReconStruct Dr Seffen said: If you think of bending a ruler, when you bend it you are changing its shape and also the stress within the structure. The shape and stress are interconnected - the more shape changes, the greater the stress become, until eventually the object fails. What we have worked out is ways that you can make the shape and the stress interact with each other in a positive way. When the Cambridge team's material is bent, like the ruler, the stress within the material increases. But rather than going on to break, the stress level reaches a midway point and then changes to force the structure into a different shape. Some of the structures are dimpled, and can move from a flat surface to a crease to a twisted shape. Electronic newspapers Dr Seffen said the material could have several different applications. We are producing the supporting material for flexible electronics. Flexible electronics is a burgeoning area, people are looking into making very thin flexible displays that could be used for electronic newspapers, or other portable electronic media like a roll-up laptop or compact mobile phone. He added because his structures are produced from one sheet of metal, they are quick and cheap to produce, and light and easy to carry around. Another application, said Dr Seffen, could be for temporary shelters that could be put up in emergency situations. They are transportable plus they have structural integrity, he added. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Taraprakash Sent: Friday, September 22, 2006 10:04 AM To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Subject: Re: [AI] my introduction *** No virus was detected in the attachment no filename Your mail has been scanned by InterScan MSS. *** Welcome Srini. Re: [AI] the other side of internet
Hi shahdaab I really found your topicfull of knowledge andinteresting too. everybody knows everything in excess is bad. But they keep on trying doing that is prohibited. the same way Its written on cigratte packet its injurious to health, but people do not stop it even though they know each and everything about it.take it easy, we can make people aware , rest is on them. vijeta - Original Message - From: SHADAB HUSAIN [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Friday, September 22, 2006 7:11 AM Subject: [AI] the other side of internet The ''other side'' of Internet Undoubtedly, Internet is the greatest invention of the 20th century. But like everything else, it also has a darker and dangerous side. From Net crime to addiction, it's a dangerous place out there on the information superhighway. Shashwat Chaturvedi Shyam Asher (name changed) suffers from a disease that he is unable to pronounce. Asher works as a manager at one of the major media groups in the country, and can be found online most of the time. For years, he had been suffering from a nagging backache, and almost gave up after trying out quite many doctors and remedies. One fine day, he decided to give Internet a chance to play doctor, he poured out all his ills to the Google search box and indeed the doctor quickly diagnosed his illness as ankylosing spondylitis. Children Addicted to Internet Now, Asher leads an austere life as defined by Dr. Google, recently, he has given up eating wheat and does not have dairy products, also his food should be cooked in olive oil, much to the chagrin of his mother. Don't they say, too much of something is a bad thing, and the Internet can be at times be that too much. Over the last few years more and more people have come to depend on the Internet for everything right from buying stuff to finding succor for loneliness. And this dependency could create a lot of issues. The Internet is a great medium for everything and like any other medium has its pros and cons. Most of us are aware of the pros, lets take a look at the cons. The macro and the micro Broadly, Internet related problems could be bracketed under two headings, macro and micro. Cyber wars, where hackers from one country deface websites from another, for instance during the Kargil conflict, a lot of Indian websites were defaced. Or cyber crimes like phishing, wherein people's banks accounts are attacked. There is also, the DOS (denial of service) attacks by hackers, where specific websites are targeted. These are the broader threats that one faces on the Internet. On the other end of the spectrum, are micro issues, or people problems. Issues like addiction or overt dependency fall under this header. Cyber wars and other Internet poses a potential threat of the breakout of information warfare. Some countries have applied the Internet into military operations, have conducted mock attacks against other countries' networks, or have fabricated deceptive information harmful to other countries' military forces. At a time when the information networks have become an important infrastructure of the nation and the military, the information warfare will be a war without the explosives, a war with a high invisibility, low cost, international, and multi-area (political, military, economic, social and material resources) approach. There had been a recent controversy with the Google Earth satellite images, which are being argued posing threat for the defense of India. Zoom-in at the Bangalore airport on Google Earth, and you will find the type of fighter jets India has parked there. Korean government had already banned the images of the defense areas of the country on the Google Earth. Speaking from the Indian perspective, the New-Gen is distinctly different from the old one. Over time, attitudes seem to be undergoing drastic changes due to the impact of the online medium. The I know all attitude has come into being, as information is at hand. This arrogance is quite at display at the numerous schools and colleges in the metros. Not only that, most of the college-goers today rely on the Internet for all their assignments; good old understanding and hard work has taken a beating. Students tend to 'google' rather than work their way out of academic problems. The effects could be quite bad. In this case, most faculty feel the CTRL-A, CTRL-C and CTRL-V attitude of the students would not help them in the long run. Then there are the health issues like obesity and insomnia or sleeplessness. With most of the people getting online, working for long sitting down they tend to gain more weight over a period of time. Impact on children Frequent and prolonged Internet sessions may pose physical health risks for children. The most frequently cited are visual strain, harmful effects of radiation, and posture and

please discuss such matter in another group called say everything. this is not an appropriate forum for such discussion. thanks. - Original Message - From: vijeta [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Thursday, September 21, 2006 5:22 PM Subject: [AI] diabetes Diabetes Diabetes Diabetes is classified into four catagories with slightly varied therapeutic protocols that our customers have seen phenomenal results with.
