Re: [AI] Speech-friendly textual directions from Google Maps
Yes, it works, However, the sad sad part is that it does not work for places in India. I tried locations in US and UK. In both these places the guideance was helpful. Of course, I don't know about the places, however the system was useful. Whenever exxcessive bounces takes place, the mail list server suspends sending mails on that ID. Probably that happend. It is only a probability as it is not possible to know the exact reasons. [AI] Speech-friendly textual directions from Google Maps
The Official Google Blog Tuesday, December 26, 2006 Speech-friendly textual directions from Google Maps By T.V. Raman, Research Scientist 12/26/2006 08:31:00 AM >From time to time, our own T.V. Raman shares his tips on how to use Google >from his perspective as a technologist who cannot see -- tips that sighted >people, among others, may also find useful. - Ed. Google Maps and its associated local search is a quick and easy means of locating businesses and obtaining directions. Most people who use it already seem to enjoy the graphical interface with its extremely reactive GUI. But when using spoken output, this visual richness can get in the way of quickly listening to the results of a maps query. As an alternative, Google Maps also provides a simple to use a textual interface that serves up directions very efficiently when working with a screenreader or a Braille display. This alternative view into Google Maps is here, at the Textual Maps UI. LINK: http://maps.google.com/?output=html It's extremely useful for blind and visually impaired users, as well as an effective solution for those times when you're at a non-graphical display and need to quickly look up a location. Just type a simple English query of the form start address to end address and quickly get the information you're looking for. Though we added this option to enhance the accessibility of Google Maps for blind and low-vision users, perhaps others will find this alternative view a useful addition to their maps arsenal. Re: [AI] Machine is automatically shutting down
it seems there is a virus on your computer, you can download stinger which may tell you if there is any virus. Stinger is a small utility wwhich checks for latest viruses, a search for it on google will take you to it's home page from where you can download it. But stinger may only give you a clue, you should use latest full fledged antivirus, along with installing windows XP SP2 if you are using windows XP. [AI] TTC done at Enable India
Dear AI, At Enable India in Bangalore, we 10 people have successfully completed our "Training for Trainer Course" (TTC) on Windows and MS Office. It was 21 days course (conducted from December 4th to December 23rd, 2006) for teachers who are at present teaching computer operations to VI and participants were from all over India from different institutions and individuals. Friends, it was a great experience and we have learned a lot about teaching computer to VI. Shanti Raghvan and Vidya Rao were our trainers and learning from such experienced people from the field was worth, they taught us about special teaching techniques for VI, using tactile diagrams, VI rules for computer operating and exceptions, efficient ways of teaching fundamentals of windows and many other teaching related aspects. Lectures were not only brainstorming but very interactive and with real teaching experiences with students. We all know Shanti from quiet a long time and her work for employment of VI and other disables is also well recognized by NCEPDP and corporate world. During our training sessions she shared lot of employment related things that should be considered in our computer training for VI and how to train our students to make them competent with sighted people and more employable. So friends I wish this kind of TTC program is good for all of us to impart quality training and interested AI members can join next TTC program at Enable India.
