[AI] A new digital smartpen and paper
Mightier than the words A new digital smartpen and paper that records lectures in a classroom and works with touch to give tactile feedback could go a long way in improving education, especially for visually impaired students Posted On Sunday, December 09, 2007 Mumbai Mirror Bureau Subjects like physics, calculus and biology are challenging for most students. But imagine tackling these topics without being able to see the graphs and figures used to teach them, and you will know the plight of blind students. Now, scientists in the US have developed a new smartpen and paper technology that works with touch and records classroom audio, aiming to bring these subjects to life for the visually impaired. Mainstream approaches to teaching STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) courses all rely strongly on diagrams, graphs, charts and other figures, putting students with visual disabilities at a significant disadvantage, said Andy Van Schaack, a lecturer in Vanderbilt University's Peabody College of education and human development. Our goal is to enable students and teachers to produce and explore diagrams and figures through touch and sound by using a smartpen and paper technology that is low-cost, portable and easy to use. Van Schaack worked with Joshua Miele, a blind researcher at the Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute. Together, they applied the new technology, created by technology firm Livescribe, to this effort. Van Schaack is Livescribe's senior science adviser. My area of expertise is instructional technology. I spend a lot of my time trying to figure out how to use technology to make teaching and learning more effective, efficient and accessible, Van Schaack said. A new world of possibilities has opened for the creation of portable, low-cost, high-quality accessible graphics enhanced with audio, he said. For example, a visually impaired psychology student could learn neuroanatomy by exploring a diagram of the brain, with each lobe, gyrus and sulcus's name spoken as the smartpen touches it. The smartpen recognises handwritten marks through a camera inside its tip that focuses on a minute pattern of dots printed on paper. It captures over 100 hours of audio through a built-in microphone and plays back audio through a built-in speaker or 3-D recording headset. The pen also has a USB connection, allowing for recorded files to be uploaded to a student's computer for future use. One of the key aspects of this gadget is that it will be much more affordable and portable than previous products used for this purpose. Students can simply put it in their backpacks with the rest of their books and notebooks. The researchers will be using a prototype of the Livescribe smartpen with a Sewell Raised Line Drawing Kit – a Mylar-like film that is deformed when a student writes on it with a pen, creating raised drawings. The students will thus be able to touch a hand-drawn figure with their smartpen to hear audio explanations of its features. As for other uses of the smartpen, Van Schaack believes the possibilities are endless. It really is a new computer platform. It has most of the technology found in a laptop, but gets its information from handwriting rather than a keyboard, he said. One of its most immediate uses that I see will be for college students. It will allow them to spend more time listening in class while taking more of an outline form of notes and revise them later, giving them the opportunity to annotate for accuracy and additional detail. The smartpen is expected to hit stores in 2008 at a cost of less than $200 (Rs 7,900 approx). The Livescribe interactive notebooks will cost about the same as a good quality notebook, the researchers say. Re: [AI] Ubuntu 7.10 Live CD.
The slowness may be due to the configuration of RAM. Ubuntu and Orca needs at least 256 MP of RAM. 512 will be much better and 1 GB, perfect. After having inserted the CD into the rom and restarted the PC, wait for the CD to spin. When you feel it rotating, press f5 to activate accessability screen then the number 3 on the main keyboard to start orca and press enter twice. Orca will start speaking after you have reached the desktop. If Orfca does not start, press alt+f2 to activate the run command, type orca and press enter. hope this helps. One has to be a bit patient to overcome these initial issues. Before installing, you can run the Ubuntu live CD and test the ubuntu environment. - Original Message - From: Amiyo Biswas [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Sunday, December 09, 2007 11:39 PM Subject: Re: [AI] Ubuntu 7.10 Live CD. [AI] RBI warns against tempting fund offers on e-mails
I know our list members will not fall in these types of traps. But since the RBI itself has clarified it, I thought this is worth posting. Renuka The Hindu News Update Service News Update Service Monday, December 10, 2007 : 1520 Hrs National RBI warns against tempting fund offers on e-mails Mumbai (PTI): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has advised the public not to succumb to the temptation of fictitious offers of large funds through e-mails from unknown entities. Members of public should also not make any remittance towards participation in such schemes/offers from unknown entities, the central bank said while clarifying that sending money abroad to participate in lottery or similar schemes is not permitted under Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). The RBI has issued the warning to caution individuals who initially receive tempting offers of large funds on various pretexts from unknown overseas entities through e-mails and letters and are later requested to remit a small amount as commission for transfer of money. The RBI clarified that under FEMA restrictions on transfer of funds also apply to lottery-like schemes functioning in different names such as money circulation scheme or remittances for the purpose of securing prize money/awards etc. Describing the usual modus operandi of such operators, the RBI said that once the contact is established, the offer is followed by a request seeking details of bank account of the individuals and a demand for some initial deposit/ commission for transfer of money. The central bank, it said, has been receiving references from individuals in the past seeking approvals for effecting remittances in foreign currency towards commission/fees for receiving prizes won in overseas lottery schemes. The central bank has also asked the people not to be swayed by copies of certificates/deposit schemes, purported to have been issued by the RBI, which some operators produce to substantiate their claims. Re: [AI] Accessible firewall
Steps to solve this problem: Just read this once carefully without doing anything at this moment in your computer. After pressing enter once you type address in location edit combo in Firefox, 1) Open Sigate personal firewall and go to application list box. With little or no difference, It is like this: Tab, Hide Windows Services check box not checked Tab, Hide Broadcast Traffic checkbox not checked Tab, listbox. NT curnal and When you get there, reclass that custom type window, if you've not done so. If, however, it is reclassed, then continue: 1) Choose firefox from that listbox and activate context menu (application key) If you are not able to find firefox option, then make sure firefox is active on your computer and it is displaying problem loading page. 2) after activating context menu, press enter on: allow Smart tip: instead of doing all this, if you are displayed with a diolog box that says firefox is trying to connect to ..., do the following: Select the checkbox that says somethingdo not ask me again or something similar and press space bar on yes button. this will always allow firefox to access internet. If you have any problem, what so ever with firefox, your best bet is to write to me. Indeed, it has to make progress on scanning and sound editing. Though, there are more than useful software packages to fulfil these needs, accessability is a problem at least for now. So, if we try to get in terms with ubuntu and orca, I don't think, it will take too long to throw away the ever bug producing and virus vulnerable windows. Dear folks, here, I would like to know how much of you have tasted Ubuntu and orca. Important! I am not writing these words to offend any ideologies or to fume any argumentative debate on the list. - Original Message - From: FARHAN [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: access india accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Tuesday, December 04, 2007 9:16 AM Subject: Re: [AI] Files not visible ha ha ha ha ha. how is microsoft is murdhaubaudh? has Windows Xp been created from microsoft? if yes, then how is microsoft is murdhaubaudh ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. please do not say this words again. otherwise windows xp,which is elder sister of vista, will tell about these words. ha ha ha ha this is just like a joke! ha ha ha. - Original Message - From: Vetrivel Adhimoolam [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Tuesday, December 04, 2007 9:15 AM Subject: [AI] Files not visible Hi everyone, Here is the tricky question: Some of my MP3 files that I burnt to CD with XP is not visible in my new vista computer. [AI] Fw: Discrimination against disabled still rife, says report
- Original Message - From: BlindNews Mailing List [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, December 10, 2007 8:10 AM Subject: Discrimination against disabled still rife, says report Personnel Today (UK) Monday, December 03, 2007 Discrimination against disabled still rife, says report By Jo Faragher Shut out: Our exclusive online survey shows that employers are happy to make practical changes to the way they work to open up access to the disabled, but prejudice is still rife, as Jo Faragher reports Despite years of making changes to the way we work and several drafts of legislation, prejudice around employing disabled people is still rife. In our survey of just under 700 businesses, carried out in conjunction with disability charity Leonard Cheshire, 86% agreed that employers would pick a non-disabled candidate over a disabled candidate, while 92% said there was still discrimination against disabled people in employment and recruitment. Yet paradoxically, employers are more ready than they have ever been to welcome the disabled into the workplace. When it came to the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), almost 80% of respondents felt their knowledge of the legislation was either reasonable or good, although only 5% felt it was 'excellent'. The majority of respondents employed more than 25 disabled people in their organisation. Loyal workers The level of discrimination disabled people still face is all the more surprising given the perception among most respondents that they are more loyal workers. Almost 90% of respondents did not agree that the average turnover rate for disabled workers would be higher than that for non-disabled workers. And, 43% did not think that disabled people would be more likely to be frequently absent - so the preconception that disabled people take more time off does not necessarily hold true. Many employers have made adjustments to their work environments to accommodate disabled employees. Three-quarters of those questioned in our survey had been asked to make adjustments to the workplace, and almost all were able to honour those requests. Of those that couldn't accommodate the changes, the most common reason was because they were 'unreasonable'. Other factors included cost (27% felt it was too expensive) and disruption to other staff (a further 27%). Rights and obligations Some of the difficulties employers have in employing disabled workers seem to lie in knowing their precise rights and obligations. While most respondents felt they had a good grasp of the DDA, there was some confusion about who it applies to. For example, when asked whether someone who'd been diagnosed with cancer, but was not yet showing signs of the disease, would be covered by the DDA, 79% agreed(this has been the case since December 2005). However, respondents were split over whether someone who had recently been diagnosed with depression would qualify - 41% said they would, while 50% said they wouldn't. In fact, if a mental illness (including depression) has a substantial, adverse and long-term effect on their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities, then the worker is covered by the DDA. There is also a need for clarity over how employers and workers gain government assistance. Awareness of the government's Access to Work scheme was high, with more than three-quarters of respondents conscious of it, and more than half supporting disabled workers through the scheme. However, almost one-quarter said they found the scheme, which offers practical support to disabled people who are in or looking for paid employment, 'not very easy' to use. Our survey suggests that awareness of the challenges facing disabled employees, not to mention practical adjustments to accommodate them, are high up on the corporate agenda. Where the real work needs to be done is in overcoming the discrimination that continues to stifle the progress of the disabled at work. Making adjustments Accommodating the needs of disabled workers extends way beyond installing a ramp or adapting toilet facilities. Many of the respondents to our survey had gone out of their way to make the jobs of disabled employees easier and fit in more flexibly to the business. Some of the changes included: Employing signers to enable deaf people to attend important meetings. Identifying products by colour codes rather than numbers. Flashing lights for deaf employees and vibrating alerts for blind workers. Alterations to heavy doors for multiple sclerosis sufferers. Assisting with costs for wheelchairs, hearing aids, etc. Allowing dyslexic employees to dictate reports rather than write them down. Disabled car parking adjacent to the office. Providing an appropriate environment for hearing dogs/guide dogs. Painting doorways in bright colours for the visually impaired. Jo Faragher

It pretty much covers everything. But a couple of suggestions though: The policy also should include sufficient guidelines describing what should be done in the event of certain delays as the result of computer problems or the malfunctioning of the software. Because things can go wrong on that front and visually challenged candidates should not suffer as the result of such issues. So in my view, the software/hardware requirements should be amended to be inclusive of this issue. Second, visually impaired candidates are also increasingly appearing on various exams that require solving of extensive mathematical problems. Some of those exams may actually allow regular students to use calculator and in such circumstances, visually challenged candidates also should be allowed to bring talking calculator in to the examination hall. Please let me have your comments on this draft urgently and no later than this evening. Every year more and more Visually Disabled candidates are appearing for various examinations. b.. Number of examining bodies has been increasing over the years a.. Various orders/judgments/directions have been passed by various Courts/Commissions/Authorities and deal with the problem in piecemeal. a.. st1\:*{behavior:url(#default#ieooui) } Dear list, I#8217;ve read this message and got surprised ,so I wouldlike to share the article with you. Regards Vinod Benjamin ModernGhana.com, Ghana Wednesday, December 05, 2007 It's Not A Joke: The NeedFor Blind Officers In GhanaPolice Service By Kwaku Adu-Gyamfi, NJ, USA Feature Article - Wed, 05Dec 2007 ARE YOU AWARE THAT THE BLINDPOLICE OFFICERS HAVE UNIQUE GIFTS TO FIGHT CRIMES? For surveillance andforensic purposes, Ghana Police Service needs blind police officers in its rankand file to enable it to fight crimes effectively. Those in the law enforcementand crime fighting businesses know that ninety-five percent of crimescommitted, or about to be committed are solved by using ninety-five percent ofthe three basic human senses-the nose, the ear and the eye. The rest isjust a raw gut and personal intuition. These have been the arsenals in thetrade since crimes were invented by humankind. However, losing one of thesesenses doesn't and shouldn't necessarily disqualify one from being an activeand effective crime fighter. In fact, a blind person iscompensated by nature to filter information more accurately with the ear than asighted person. The blind sense of smelling is higher than those of us who havesight. The upsurge andproliferation of global illicit- drug trafficking and terrorism, increase inorganized intercontinental crimes and the quest of some few selfish individualswho want to get rich quicker without any sweat , are making Ghana to have morethan its share of criminal activities than anticipated. The effect of this isthat, our State security apparatus have been stretched to an unprecedentedlimit. The fact on hand now is thatusing the natural weapons like: the ears, the eyes, the nose and personalintuition are just as effective as the modern day technologies. These old, butjust discovered natural crime fighting techniques have been tried in Belgium and the Netherlands. These countries areusing specialized blind officers in transcribing and analyzing surveillancerecordings-wiretapping and eavesdropping. It is believed that the blind arevery good in linguistic and have the capability to learn different languagesand sounds with much ease. They have very superb abilities to hear like anelephant and can also have a memory comparable to the computer and ability toretain and recall information at a faster speed. It's believed that hearing isthe fastest vehicle for memorization of detailed events. Ghanahas many brilliant blind persons in its higher institutions of learning. Thoseof you who have had the opportunity to share learning environment with theblind will realize that they are very powerful in the use of their othersenses. This article is to challengethe Ghana Police Service (GPS) to effectively harness this abundance resourceto fight local and international crimes. In these days and age, it will be easyto recruit and set-up a blind officers unit, with very reliable Global Positionsystem (GPS) and voice -activated devices. There are also specially equippedcomputers with Braille key boards and software that translates images on thecomputer screen into sound with the aim of reducing the blind officers'physical limitations. Come next January, a lot offoreigners and all kinds of criminal elements will descend on Ghana for thegames. Wouldn't it be prudent for the Ghana Police Service to plantblind police officers at our stadiums, to monitor criminal activities withtheir listening devices? In the dog-eat-dog crime -fightingbusiness world any little advantage over the perpetuator would worth more thantons of gold. The use of blind officers'challenges and rewards: 1) Most surveillancerecordings have loud background noise; a typical example was the tape in thealleged cocaine case. Analyzing such tapes requires highly trained ears toprocess and screen out the voices and valued evidential contents. Blindofficers can make this task very easy and cost effective. 2) Blind officers would bevery dedicated to their jobs assignments because they would be compelled toprove their skills to their sighted colleagues. 3) Using the blind officersin the administrative work in the service would ultimately free up the sightedmanpower, so that GPS can deploy the sighted cops in other physically demandingtasks, such as crowd control, patrols and many other critical proactive andreactive modules. 4) Forensic police workwould be enhanced if the blind police officers are used. 5) Most major crimes aresolved with forensic and surveillance tools, therefore using the blind policeofficers would be a win, win situation for the nation and the Police Service. The challenges of usingblind police officers are more of social problems than physical one. Somesighted officers would find it hard to work with the blind officers because ofthe fear of not
[AI] Flirty computer program raises ID theft fears
The Hindu News Update Service News Update Service Tuesday, December 11, 2007 : 0940 Hrs Sci. Tech. Flirty computer program raises ID theft fears London, (GUARDIAN NEWS SERVICE) By Bobbie Johnson A computer program that poses as a flirtatious internet surfer is being used to steal people's identities from online chatrooms, experts claim. According to analysts at online security company PC Tools, the robot - known as CyberLover - is being used by criminals to gather information on internet chatters. Intended for use by lonely hearts with no time to talk, CyberLover takes on a series of different identities and fools chatters into believing they are talking with a real person. Users can direct the nature of the questions, and the program will then compile a report on the person it has been talking to and deliver it back to its owner. Although the system is aimed at lovelorn Russians, experts at PC Tools claim criminals are using CyberLover to ask victims a series of targeted personal questions which can be used in identity theft. The potential number of victims could be very substantial, said PC Tools analyst Sergei Shevchenko. As a tool that can be used by hackers to conduct identity fraud, CyberLover demonstrates an unprecedented level of social engineering. The ability to fool a person into believing they are talking with a human rather than a computer is held as one of the cornerstones of artificial intelligence. Although experts do not believe CyberLover would pass the Turing test, designed by mathematician Alan Turing as a measure of machine intelligence, it is one of the more sophisticated tools in circulation.
