Warning on stealthy Windows virus
Security experts are warning about a stealthy Windows
virus that steals login details for online bank
accounts.

In the last month, the malicious program has racked up
about 5,000 victims - most of whom are in Europe.

Many are falling victim via booby-trapped websites
that use vulnerabilities in Microsoft's browser to
install the attack code.

Experts say the virus is dangerous because it buries
itself deep inside Windows to avoid detection.

Old tricks

The malicious program is a type of virus known as a
rootkit and it tries to overwrite part of a computer's
hard drive called the Master Boot Record (MBR).

This is where a computer looks when it is switched on
for information about the operating system it will be
running.

If you can control the MBR, you can control the
operating system and therefore the computer it resides
on, wrote Elia Florio on security company Symantec's
blog.

Mr Florio pointed out that many viruses dating from
the days before Windows used the Master Boot Record to
get a grip on a computer.

Once installed the virus, dubbed Mebroot by Symantec,
usually downloads other malicious programs, such as
keyloggers, to do the work of stealing confidential
information.

Most of these associated programs lie in wait on a
machine until its owner logs in to the online banking
systems of one of more than 900 financial
institutions.

The Russian virus-writing group behind Mebroot is
thought to have created the torpig family of viruses
that are known to have been installed on more than
200,000 systems. This group specialises in stealing
bank login information.

Security firm iDefense said Mebroot was discovered in
October but started to be used in a series of attacks
in early December.

Between 12 December and 7 January, iDefense detected
more than 5,000 machines that had been infected with
the program.

Analysis of Mebroot has shown that it uses its hidden
position on the MBR as a beachhead so it can
re-install these associated programs if they are
deleted
by anti-virus software.

Although the password-stealing programs that Mebroot
installs can be found by security software, few
commercial anti-virus packages currently detect its
presence. Mebroot cannot be removed while a computer
is running.

Independent security firm GMER has produced a utility
that will scan and remove the stealthy program.

Computers running Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows
Server 2003 and Windows 2000 that are not fully
patched are all vulnerable to the virus.

[AI] hot tips for keeping your computer cool in summer

2008-01-12 Thread m tajudeen
Hot Tips for Keeping Your PC Cool in Summer
Computers hate summer. That's because it comes with a computer's worst
enemy: heat. Too much heat can cause hard drives to fail prematurely
and entire systems to become slower and less stable. A hot day combined
with inadequate or malfunctioning cooling inside a PC can, in fact,
spell the end of a computer altogether.
But there are steps you can take to keep your PC cool enough in the
summertime. By paying attention to how much heat-stress your PC may be
under, you'll not only extend its lifespan but also enjoy trouble-free
computing during the time you own it.
  Danger signs
How can you tell if your PC is suffering from heat-related stress?
The best way is to take its temperature directly. Because overheating
is a fairly common concern among system manufacturers today, many PCs
provide temperature readings either through the BIOS or through system
software.
Your computer's BIOS (basic input-output services) is composed of
set up screens that typically can be entered at the time you reboot your
computer. A keystroke entered at the bootup screen generally gets you into
the BIOS.
There, you will often see a screen devoted to temperature readings
from inside your PC. If the BIOS doesn't give you temperature readings,
chances are good that your system manufacturer offers a software tool that
monitors temperatures inside of your PC and can sound an alarm when
the heat reaches a dangerous level. Or you can turn to a free downloadable
utility such as Motherboard Monitor (
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=311).
A temperature reading of higher than 60 degrees Celsius on any
internal component is generally a cause for concern, especially if that
temperature
is reached at bootup, when the PC is not under stress. Occasionally
temperatures for a CPU - the main processor in your computer - will rise
higher than 60 degrees Celsius, but usually such temperatures should not
be the norm. If they are, your computer will likely slow down, as
performance-throttling safeguards kick in, or become unstable.
  Keeping it cool
There are plenty of steps you can take to keep your PC cool during
the summer. First, open up your PC from time to time to make sure all
internal fans are operating. The onset of hot weather is a good time to
tackle this chore. If you're a bit nervous about having to pop open the
hood of your computer, don't worry. Usually removing a few easy-to-find
screws or a popping a simple latch is all you need to do to inspect the
inside of your computer. Most computer manuals tell you how it's
done.
Open the case while your computer is turned off. When the case is
open, turn the computer back on and make sure that all internal fans spin
up and operate consistently. You should see two or three internal fans in
your average computer - usually one fan is over the central processor,
while another may be located atop the graphics card, into which your
monitor cable usually plugs.
Second, try to locate your PC in a cool room - or a cool place
within an otherwise warm room. If your room has air conditioning, place the
computer itself as close to an air conditioning vent as possible - or
somewhere where outside air circulation is available.
The fact is that any personal computer can and will raise ambient
air temperature in a room, so it makes sense to minimize that effect for
the benefit of the PC as well as for those who work around it. If you do
not have or do not want to use air conditioning, try to get air circulating
around the computer, either with an oscillating fan or by placing it near
a window with some air circulation.
Third, make a point to remove dust from your PC - especially around
air vents, where balls of dust can accumulate and prevent proper airflow.
A dusty PC will get hotter internally - and generate more heat externally
- than a PC that's relatively dust free. Use common sense when removing
dust from the computer. Turn if off and unplug it first, and try not to
directly touch any sensitive electrical components within.
Finally, consider turning your PC off when you're not using it
during particularly hot spells. If you need to keep the PC itself running,
look for other heat-generating electronic components that can be powered
down while the computer does its work. Monitors, for instance, can also
generate significant heat, as can some printers.
Thanks to beefed-up graphics cards, supercharged CPUs, and
maxed-out memory, today's high-performance computers generate more heat
than any

Roster point reduced for disabled people

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, Government
of Karnataka, has issued a Government Order of January 4 reducing the roster
points for recruitment of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in the various
categories to the 4th point from the 19th point in the circle of 1 to 20 points.

The office of the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities had taken up this
issue with the department so that by bringing down the roster points from
19, people with disabilities would stand a chance to get employment in the
Government at the earliest.

The office of the Commissioner, in a press release, has said that the
Government notification of November 5, 2007 has modified rule No.13 of the
Karnataka
Civil Service (General recruitment )Rules 1977 and has exempted the Persons
with Disabilities from payment of application fee.

[AI] Cricket tourney for the visually impaired gets under way

Cricket tourney for the visually impaired gets under way

Determination: A visually impaired cricket player plays a sweep shot during a
match at Maharaja's College Grounds in Mysore on Friday.

MYSORE: Whoever said the visually challenged cannot play cricket will have to
watch the six teams vying with one another to lift the Rotary Mysore Giva
State-Level Louis Braille Challenge Cup in Mysore to believe it.

Undeterred by their impairment, the enthusiastic cricketers showed the sparse
gathering at the Maharaja's College Grounds here how they could bat as well
as a Sachin Tendulkar or bowl as accurately as Anil Kumble during the three-day
State-level cricket tournament for the visually challenged, which began
on Friday.

The repertoire of the visually challenged cricketers, who displayed their
batting skills during the day-long play, included not just the straight drive
or an off drive, but also a pull shot and a sweep shot.

However, the Rotary Mysore, which has organised the tournament in association
with the National Federation for the Blind, had made a few changes from the
standard form of cricket to facilitate the players.

In accordance with the international rules for cricket for the visually
challenged, the cricket ball was filled with ball bearings to emit a jingling
sound
that helps the batsmen to sight the ball. Also, the bowler should cry out
play before releasing the ball. The radius of the cricket field will also
be smaller..

The cricket team comprises partially visually challenged and completely
visually challenged players. Each team comprises of at least four completely
visually
challenged players and the rest having different degrees of blindness. The
rules change for players depending on their degree of blindness. For instance,
a completely visually challenged person can take a catch after it pitches. When
he bats, the ball has to be pitched twice before it reaches the crease.

A total of six cricket teams, including Government School for Blind, Mysore;
Krishna Blind School, Hassan; Sadguru Sri Siddarooda Education Society for
Blind, Hubli, besides the Ashakirana Blind School and Karnataka Welfare
Association for Blind School participated in the tournament.

The cricket tournament was inaugurated by former test cricketer Sunil Joshi in
the presence of Mysore Lok Sabha MP C.H. Vijayshankar.

Re: [AI] formatting my pen drive!

2008-01-12 Thread Vetrivel Adhimoolam
As I understand, you are using vista right? You should try formatting the
pen drive in an XP PC and see if the same problem persists. You can also try
for check error button which is located under one of those tabs in device
property. Also if the device has a switch, you may try turning it off to
make sure that it is not right protected. Hope this helps and hey, welcome
to the problematic vista world.
