2008-03-04 Thread Subramani L
No. Actually I was fascinated by the way he wears his identity. He
understands clearly that if disability is considered a defect, then
other defects in the so-called normal folks can't be brushed aside as
"Ok".

I particularly understand the drunken man's story, because it has
happened to me several times and am sure most of us would have had
similar experiences. As a matter of norm in my large joint family of
sighted folks, I will be the only one to locate lost items! I used to
ask the folks (jokingly of course) if they have problems with their eyes
or if I have problems with mine?

The fact is, though persons with disability theoretically admit that
disability shouldn't be viewed as a defect, to what extent some of them
(or us) can comfortably countenance people who jibe at the disability
and believe that they are mortally wounded remains to be tested.
Messages like these are perhaps telling us we should balance humility
with a bit of courage (not arrogance).

To hell with disability

I remember I started running every morning and playing football when I
was in 3rd grade, boxing when I was in 7th grade and athletics when I
was in 9th
grade. Running in the morning mist, chill, biting cold of peak winters
or running through the countryside in scorching sun or in the pouring
rain or running
up a mountain, I loved it, I cherished it, I savoured it.

One fine day I was trying to inch my wheelchair along the hospital
corridor smelling of dettol and phenyl. Partially working hands, aching
muscles, hurting
thumb, it was only a task/job. I didn't dislike it. My wheelchair and me
are buddies, I have loved being in it. Together we took on the world and
everything
it had to offer. If a person on two legs passes by I really don't Gape
at him but when I go in a crowd a few poor leggies gape as if they are
just witnessing
an alien invasion of planet earth (not that aliens would really surprise
me) and I do pray that God should give these poor people some excitement
in their
lives so that they have something better to gape at.

People have two legs and cannot even maintain any decent physical
fitness are bothered about a guy flying around in a wheelchair, having a
ball of a time.
Laughable.

At 22 I was in the army. In a wheelchair I went to college, flirted with
girls, fell in love a few times, had a few heartbreaks, jobs, bread and
butter,
adventure sports. A few mountains to climb, a few oceans to swim and a
few jungles and deserts to explore. how the hell could life have been
any better.

A lot of people, patients, doctors and scientists, are obsessed with
finding a cure for SCI (Spinal Cord Injuries). I don't know, I find it a
very dumb
and dull topic. Here the world and people are suffering from extremism,
terrorism, frustrationism, emptyism, depressionism, purposelessism etc
and here
we are bothered about a certain physical injury called SCI. I think
people should desperately need a cure from many other things and
attitudes before even
bothering about a cure for SCI.

If you/society wants me to be weak so that they can empathise with me,
sympathise with me, pityise with me, sorry you are at the wrong place, I
am not going
to oblige. If you/the society is looking for an opportunity to show
empathy, sympathy or pity, so that you can feel great inside, to hell
with you. I show
you empathy, sympathy and pity.

A drunk person who was finding it difficult to walk straight said to me
sometime back 'I will pray for you' and I immediately said 'and I will
pray for
you (that God gives you some sense)'. Although I know God doesn't give
you anything. He has already given you the ability to be sensible, If
you still
choose not to be sensible, he is not to blame. I am rude, I am straight,
I am a bully, I would love to get in the middle of a bunch of sleeping
Lions and
kick the air out of them. A friend for friends and a tearing tiger for
those who ask for it, that's me. Now that we are over with the
introduction, let
us talk business. "I am not decent/ gentlemanly with problems/obstacles
in my life. I kick them out of my way."

Hi Friends,
I have just heard of the great news of 2 of our members getting married.
Congratulations to them.
I think information like this should be shared with the group.
Successes, promotions, awards, write-ups and all other achievements
should be shared by the individual personally or other friends.
another friend has topped her class in her special course but she too is
shy of sharing.

Come on folks we need to feel proud of our friends and we need to tell
others about you. Please share.
The Congratulatory messages should be directly sent to the individuals
and not to the group . this is something each of us have to learn .

So kindly send the information in and please let us all know.

Wireless ways for high-speed file swaps

New wireless personal networks promise ultra-fast data exchange over short
distances

Gigabit wireless: The Gi-Fi integrated wireless transceiver chip developed at
the National ICT Research Centre, Australia. -

Move over Wi-Fi, Gi-Fi is here! They are not putting it quite that way, but
recent developments hold out the hope that very large video and other files,
can be swapped within seconds, by wireless devices operating over a few metres,
in largely unused and unlicensed higher frequency bands.

First tangible evidence

The first tangible evidence that Gi-Fi (the 'Gi' is for gigabit data rates)
might be more than just a neat new acronym, came from Australia last week.
Researchers
at the Victoria Research Laboratory of National Information and Communication
Technology Australia Ltd (NICTA), announced that they had developed the world's
first transmitter-receiver integrated on a single chip, operating at 60 GHz and
fabricated using the complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process.

The chip, just 5 mm per side, has a tiny 1 mm antenna and uses the 60 GHz
'millimetre-wave' spectrum - an unlicensed band of 7 GHz between 57 GHZ and
64GHz.
NICTA's CEO David Skellern says the technology will allow the wireless transfer
of audio and video files at rates up to 5 gigabits per second. almost ten
times faster than what is currently possible. And the fabrication which uses a
130 nanometre CMOS process, may lead eventually to chips priced as low as
$10.

There are a number of firsts here: One, developing high frequency radio
components in a standard CMOS process rather than in silicon seems to be a major
achievement. If the process can be scaled up, it holds out the possibility of
low cost, low power chips which are also very high broadband.

To get a feel for the scale of achievement, consider the best we can achieve
with today's incumbent wireless technologies, Wi-Fi ,Wi-MAX or Bluetooth.

WiFi (WLAN, 802.11) operates in the 2.4 GHz band, has transfer rates of between
11 MBPS and 55 MBPS. WiMAX ( 802.16WiMAX) operates in the 2-11 GHz band
and achieves data rates of up to 70 MBPS. Bluetooth (802.15Bluetooth) whose
operational ranges are comparable to what can be achieved by the Australian
Gi-Fi chip, is typically capable of 20 KBPS to 200 KBPS and in its fastest
version, peaks at 55 MBPS. Second, this is one of the first practical
applications
in the band of what is being known as mw-WPAN, that is, millimeter wave
Wireless Personal Area Network. or 802.15.3 to give it the correct designation.
An IEEE Task Group no. 3C was formed in 2005 to develop this new WPAN
alternative which promises to harness a relatively uncrowded, unlicensed band
while
offering the hope of data rates of at least 1 GBPS and typically 2 GBPS or
better. (see entries for Task Group 3C at
http://www.ieee802.org/15/
for technical details and future roadmap).

The potential of mw-WPAN for ultra fast data exchange has prompted companies
like Intel, LG, Matsushita (Panasonic), NEC, Samsung, SiBEAM, Sony and Toshiba
to form WirelessHD, an industry-led effort to define a specification for the
next generation wireless digital network interface for consumer electronics
products. Specifically, WirelessHD has a stated goal of enabling wireless
connectivity for streaming high-definition content between source devices and
high-definition displays. ( see
http://www.wirelesshd.org ).

In fact the NICTA effort, says its Gigabit Wireless Project leader Prof Stan
Skafidas, has been supported by key industry players like IBM, Synopsys,
Cadence,
Anritsu, Aglent, Microsoft and SUSS MicroTec, so clearly there is industry
interest in exploiting any technology that might boost data rates and drop
product
costs, ten fold. an enticing possibility.
Usable prototypes

In an indoor environment, the NICTA Gi-Fi device ( usable prototypes may be
less than a year away) is expected to work over a distance of up to 10 metres.
which puts it somewhere between Bluetooth and WiFi, range-wise. What will it do
for you and me? Consumers could typically download a high definition movie
from a kiosk in a matter of seconds to a music player or smart phone and having
got home, could play it on a home theatre system or store it on a home
server for future viewing, again within a few seconds.

Maybe, it's not that premature to say, "WiFi, it's time to move over, the
competition is here!"

2008-03-04 Thread Samuel Rodrigues
Hi anubha,
If the mails have been deleted permanently, you cannot get them back.
But if the mails have been deleted from inbox they mostly go to deleted
items.
If you know which mail it is, then go to the folder deleted items, if I
guess.
Stay on the mail which ever it may be, example:
" Access India, welcome to Access India"
Press alt+e then press m and choose the folder you want to move the mail and
then press enter.
Hope this helps,
With regards
Samuel

[AI] Why can't Indians build a great product in India?'

2008-03-04 Thread Pradeep banakar
Why can't Indians build a great product in India?'

March 03, 2008
Their simplicity hits you in the face. So does their brilliance and gumption.

First, their simplicity: You think you are going to meet entrepreneurs who have
built a world class product in India and expect them to be nattily dressed,
polished in their manners and a bit arrogant. When you meet them you are
surprised to find them dressed in sandals and sneakers that mismatch their
clothes,
manners that are down to earth and a modesty shaped by their background.

Now their brilliance and gumption: All three had cosy jobs in one of the
world's most respected software companies with jobs that earned them a bomb. But
the emotion of "building a world-class Indian product by Indians" and the
entrepreneurial bug bit them and they decided to call it a day.

"We essentially wanted to build a huge organisation from scratch and my
ambition was to get cutting-edge technology to India," says one of the three
partners
of Druvaa, a start-up that says it has built a world class data backup software
product that will cost companies one-sixth the price quoted by the number
one company in the data protection domain.

Ramani Kothandaram, Milind Borate and Jaspreet Singh, three former Veritas
employees, have built a product that will help big companies protect their
crucial
data from corruption resulting out of any emergency. "If you compare our
product with the best in the domain then more than 80 per cent of their features
are identical," they say, confident of adding that remaining 20 per cent in
about another six months.

"If Indians can build great products for foreign companies in India then why
can't an Indian build as great a product in India for an Indian company?"
reasons
Milind who has four patents in the storage domain space in his name and
awaiting 11 more patents in the same field.

While Milind has done his MTech in computer science from IIT Bombay, Jaspreet
is a computer science grad from IIT, Guwahati. Interestingly, Ramani has no
background of computer science for he is a BTech from the Agriculture
Engineering College, Jabalpur. He later did his Master's from the Cranfield
University,
UK on an
ODA scholarship

Rediff.com's Prasanna D Zore spoke to Druvaa's Ramani Kothandaram and Milind
Borate about their cutting-edge product, how they managed to do it and the
challenges this 'Made in India by an Indian for an Indian company' product will
face. Jaspreet was in New Delhi on business when this interview was conducted.

How do you explain your product to a layperson?

Ramani: We have two products: Druvaa Replicator and Druvaa In Sync.

Let us say that you have a computer. If your computer crashes then you take a
back up of the data on that machine so that you don't lose important data.
When we do this time is not so important. But when the servers of large banks
and BPOs crash they can't lose business by closing their servers. Also, how
fast and till what point-in-time can you restore and recover data on your
original servers is also very important.

Thus, data replicators like Druvaa's helps an organisation continue its
business even if there is a disruption or breakdown of their main servers for
whatever
reasons. For instance, Druvaa's Replicator and In Sync can help computers in
ten different locations mirror or replicate their data in case of any disaster
on a single computer anywhere in the world.

About your start up days and challenges

Milind: The start-up days were the most exciting days. We had a new idea, we
were excited about it and we wanted to do something pathbreaking. Those were
the days when we did not have any feedback so we thought everything that we did
was right.

As we moved along we built the first version, went to customers and tried to
get their feedback on our product. It is then we started to realise the market
realities. Then came the phase when we started to question ourselves -- if we
had the right dreams or not. But the intensity kind of always grew.

When we started going to customers and as they started liking our product it
gave a tremendous boost to our confidence. We realised that we had a very good
product and people wanted to buy it. However, we couldn't market our product
aggressively. Those were the challenging days for us.

As we started convincing our investors about our product and got more
investments we again started believing in ourselves.

How did you three come together?

Ramani: We are all ex-Veritas employees. Milind had left Veritas before I
joined but still we came to know about each other. In fact Veritas still has a
lot of file systems and lot of products whose development and architecture was
done by Milind. He was a technical director at Veritas. Milind had authored
a book Windows Undocumented. In a way Milind is a who's who in the storage
domain. So it was easy to find and know about Milind.

Jaspreet is our young entrepreneur. We found that Veritas had a

Illustration: Harry Campbell

Add: n. The act of gaining a new friend, and social
networking's common currency, as in "Dude, thanks for
the add."

Block: v. To configure your social networking service
to prevent a particular user from contacting you or
viewing your profile.

Check-in: n. In mobile social networking, an
electronic message that alerts your group of friends
that you have arrived at the local pub and are ready
to
party.

Cyberbully: v. To attack, harass, or ridicule a fellow
community member via posted text, video, or other
electronic means.

Defriend: v. The inverse of adding a friend, and the
very epitome of coldness. Same as unfriend.

Faceslam: v. To ignore a Facebook friend request from
someone you don't know and/or wish would just go away.

Facestalk: v. To scan, jealously, the Facebook
profiles and photos of people you know, are going out
with, or are going out with in your dreams.

Friend: v. To request that another user add you as a
friend--sometimes an awkward moment for the social
networker.

MySpace Suicide: n. The act of deleting one's MySpace
account forever.

Nudge: v. On Twitter, to send a message notifying
someone you follow that they're not posting frequently
enough.

Poke: n. On Facebook, a feature that lets other users
know that you're looking at their profile, and
possibly stalking them.

RL: n. Real life--the world of flesh, bone, and
face-to-face meetings that existed before the Web
browser.

Slurping: n. The ability of most social networks to
import your Web-based mail contacts to see if any are
already on the service. Watch out for slurpers that
spam every contact with membership invites.

Twitterrhea: n. A condition resulting in an excess of
Twitter posts. For even more Twitter jargon, see the
Twitter Fan Wiki's glossary.

[AI] Today's Website

definr.com

Online dictionaries are a dime-a-dozen, but the usual
problem is their long loading times. Today’s resource,
Definr, seeks to address this issue by providing
“incredibly fast” responses to words that you look up.
The site, which comes with its own Mozilla Firefox
extension, also has a neat ‘word of the day’ feature
that shouldn’t be missed.
