[AI] Paging for Access Indians from Pudussery...

2008-04-27 Thread Sudhir R (NeSTIT)
Hi !

A visually challenged friend from Pudussery (Pondy) is looking for help in
getting started on computers and Jaws. She is working full-time and also faces
mobility issues and hence not really in a position to attend formal computer
courses in NGOs based in Chennai, Bangalore etc.

Access India members from Pondy who are willing to help out, please contact me
off the list. Alternatively, if there are rehab institutions offering courses
in computers and Jaws in Pondy itself, please let me have their contact info.

Thanks and rgds

There are no special directions or instructions in order to be able to read
that, simply just locate your cursor just above the edit field and it'll
read it, this may sometimes also be just below the edit field.

Dear friend,

I need the record meetings & telephonic discussions. I am also planning to
record presentations given at various seminars.

The digital recorder can also be used for recording classroom lectures which
can then be stored on the computer.

[AI] Taking books to the disabled

Taking books to the disabled

James R. Fruchterman.

pick out words and enhance them. The idea remained in his head but it was
several years before he could act on it. After working as an electronic engineer
in a rocket company where the push of a button led to a rocket blowing up
before take off, he was back in Silicon Valley pondering over his idea of
helping
the visually impaired.

His boss from the rocket company was also part of the character recognition
company that Jim set up with an investment of $25 million. But investors wanted
returns and were not pleased with the idea of social service efforts, such as
developing reading systems for the visually impaired.

The seed for his project, sown in 1982, bore fruit in 1989 when he founded
Arkenstone, a non-profit organisation. It became the world's largest provider
of reading systems serving 35,000 persons with disabilities in 60 countries.
Ten years later, he sold the $5 billion enterprise and used it to launch
Benetech
Initiative in 2000.

One December evening in 1999, when he returned from work, he found new software
installed in his personal computer. Upset that someone had tampered with
his computer, he wanted to know who had done it. His 14-year-old son owned up
and played Jim's favourite music using Napster and Jim was hooked. "He spent
a whole hour with me. That's a miracle and I learnt a very cool technology," he
recalls.

He decided to do the same with books. "What my son did was illegal but getting
books to the blind is legal." And he set up Bookshare.

Today, Bookshare.org is the world's largest online book library for persons
with disabilities. The library offers them membership at subsidised rates and
provides 3,000 current copyrighted books (published over the last 20 years) and
4,000 public domain books, including those published since 1923. All major
American newspapers are also available. Bookshare has fiction and non-fiction,
trade books, 1,000 Spanish books, 700 IT books and 100 children's books.
Mr. Fruchterman says he wants to take the tools to people who need them most.
"The visually impaired in India will pay Rs.400 to sign up and read books.
I am meeting publishers to scan books and text books for Indian readers. It is
better you have a clear exemption [in copy right laws for such organisations]"
he points out. His company has already tied up with a couple of Indian
publishers. "Publishers have a social responsibility," he says. "Today we are in
India where we were in the U.S. six years ago. In a few years in India, we will
have 20,000 books, best sellers and educational text books."

hi amar this is srikanth ntfs is microsoft's premium file system it is
better secured and no matter what ever the software may be it works
fine whether fat or ntfs but only reason we prefer fat is to have back
word compatibility to have a duel o.s I.E when we prefer win 98 or m.e
along with XP ntfs does not work. microsoft is planning to remove fat
according to a recent news article released by microsoft when vista
was released. so the future operating systems may not have fat in it.

[AI] Your e-mail address 'can reveal your personality'

2008-04-27 Thread Vikas Kapoor
Your e-mail address 'can reveal your personality'

Agencies
Posted online: Sunday , April 27, 2008 at 01:36:18

London, April 27: Think twice before you pick an email address -- it can reveal
your personality.
Researchers at the University of Leipzig in Germany have carried out a study
and found that an email address may speak volumes about the character of the
person who created the unique online identification.

According to lead researcher Mitja Back, even the thinnest slice of
communication via the world wide web - the mere e-mail address -- contains
valid information about the personality of its owner.

In their study, the researchers asked a panel of 100 students to guess the
personalities of 600 young adults simply by looking at their e-mail addresses.

The panel's guesses agreed mostly with a personality survey the teenagers had
completed when it came to qualities like openness, conscientiousness and
narcissism, and diverged most on the trait of extroversion.

Addresses that gave away personality often contained full stops, numbers or a
name that was obviously not genuine, the researchers found.

Level of accuracy was explained using lens model analyses -- the students made
broad use of perceivable e-mail address features in their personality
judgements, features were slightly valid and the observers were sensitive to
subtle differences in validity between cues.

The study has been published in the latest edition of the Journal of Research
in Personality.

Re: [AI] knowledge about format OS

2008-04-27 Thread palakodeti venkata satya vijay kumar
Hello friends,
Quick format retains file system and your MBR(Master Boot Record).
Some files in your application are not deleted. That's why if you
quick format you will see that some data that you set-up are still
there. Unlike in full format, file system are erased and then
re-installed. All data are erased. This kind of formatting is not
recommended if the reason for formatting is to remove a virus. To
completely remove virus that keeps coming back, use low level
formatting ( an erroneous term but that's how they call it).

[AI] Taking Books to the Disabled

2008-04-27 Thread rambabu adikesavalu
The Hindu
Online edition of India's National Newspaper
Sunday, Apr 27, 2008
Tamil Nadu

Taking books to the disabled
— Photo: R. Shivaji Rao
James R. Fruchterman.

Students start out with ideas to benefit the deprived and the poor, but
often, the need for material benefits propels them away from altruistic
thoughts. Some, however, revisit their ideas and work on them.
One such person who carried forward his idea of helping the blind read is
James R. Fruchterman (Jim), president of Benetech Initiative, U.S. During
his recent visit to Chennai, R. Sujatha spoke to him about his plans for
  India.
Jim was fascinated with military intelligence technology as a student at
the California Institute of Technology. He wondered if a particular
technology, used to pick out an object and blow it up, could be used to
pick out words and enhance them. The idea remained in his head but it was
several years before he could act on it. After working as an electronic
engineer in a rocket company where the push of a button led to a rocket
blowing up before take off, he was back in Silicon Valley pondering over
his idea of helping the visually impaired.
His boss from the rocket company was also part of the character
recognition company that Jim set up with an investment of $25 million.
But
investors wanted returns and were not pleased with the idea of social
service efforts, such as developing reading systems for the visually
  impaired.
The seed for his project, sown in 1982, bore fruit in 1989 when he
founded
Arkenstone, a non-profit organisation. It became the world’s largest
provider of reading systems serving 35,000 persons with disabilities in
60
countries. Ten years later, he sold the $5 billion enterprise and used it
to launch Benetech Initiative in 2000.
One December evening in 1999, when he returned from work, he found new
software installed in his personal computer. Upset that someone had
tampered with his computer, he wanted to know who had done it. His
14-year-old son owned up and played Jim’s favourite music using Napster
and Jim was hooked. “He spent a whole hour with me. That’s a miracle and
I
learnt a very cool technology,” he recalls.
He decided to do the same with books. “What my son did was illegal but
getting books to the blind is legal.” And he set up Bookshare.
Today, Bookshare.org is the world’s largest online book library for
persons with disabilities. The library offers them membership at
subsidised rates and provides 3,000 current copyrighted books (published
over the last 20 years) and 4,000 public domain books, including those
published since 1923. All major American newspapers are also available.
Bookshare has fiction and non-fiction, trade books, 1,000 Spanish books,
  700 IT books and 100 children’s books.
Mr. Fruchterman says he wants to take the tools to people who need them
most. “The visually impaired in India will pay Rs.400 to sign up and read
books. I am meeting publishers to scan books and text books for Indian
readers. It is better you have a clear exemption [in copy right laws for
such organisations]” he points out. His company has already tied up with
a
  couple of Indian publishers.
“Publishers have a social responsibility,” he says. “Today we are in
India
where we were in the U.S. six years ago. In a few years in India, we will
have 20,000 books, best sellers and educational text books.”

[AI] Beware Net's Baddies

2008-04-27 Thread rambabu adikesavalu
The Hindu:
Sunday: April. 27, 2008
Front Page

Beware Net’s baddies
  Special Correspondent
Bangalore: The so-called social networking sites on the Internet — Orkut,
MySpace, YouTube, etc, — where lay users share their likes, dislikes,
hobbies and habits with thousands of likeminded people, many of them
unknown, have a downside: the Net’s baddies now seem to have made such
sites the focus of their attacks, using techniques like phishing, a type
of email fraud which aims at stealing a person’s confidential
information,
  even his total identity.
The latest Internet Security Threat Report, released by security
management specialist Symantec, holds out a special warning for
India-based fans of social networking on the Net, who number between 5
and
6 million and spend anything from 15 to 75 per cent of all spare time in
this activity. Such sites are easy to spoof, leading trusting lay users
to
share personal information with bogus operators, the report says. In
effect, cyber criminals have moved subtly from targeting your computers
with worms and viruses, to targeting YOU.
“Attackers look for the weakest link — and right now that is social
networking,” says Prabhat Singh, Symantec’s Director, Security Response
in
  India.

Hi Sir,

it as simple as you've changed your track. you can either press
Control+shift+E, or got to tools and hit enter button on track changes option.
you'll come back to your normal word settings, and then will be able to pop the
normal settings through application button!

I hope it'll be helpful.

[AI] Blind Man Teaches Intruder A Lesson

2008-04-27 Thread shahnaz

Blind man teaches intruder a lesson
Friday, 25 April , 2008, 16:24
Indianapolis:
A legally blind man beat up an intruder and
held him at knifepoint until police
arrived at the man's eastside home, authorities said.
Allan Kieta, 49, told police he was at home on
Monday morning when his small dog
began barking and he encountered the man.
"I opened the door and just ran into him. I had
him pinned in the laundry room and
just kept pummeling," said Kieta, a former wrestler in
high school.
He said he grabbed the intruder by the belt and
dragged him into the kitchen, where
he put a knife at the man's throat and tried to dial
911.
"Being visually impaired, I couldn't get the
buttons because I was using my left
hand," he said. "It took me about 20 tries."
Police arrived within minutes and arrested
Alvaro Castro, 25, on an initial charge
of residential entry, Sgt. Matthew Mount said.
Lt. Jeff Duhamell was impressed with Kieta's feat.
"It’s pretty remarkable for anyone who is blind
to be able to defend himself, let
alone make an apprehension," Duhamell said. "To
be able to grab this guy and hold
him down until police got there is pretty remarkable."
Castro, who was initially taken to the Wishard
Memorial Hospital detention facility,
denied trying to burglarise the home and said he
was a former boyfriend of Kieta's
daughter and was trying to visit her, said Mount.
Kieta said Castro told him he was looking for his cat.
"I go, 'Your cat? You're in my house!'" Kieta
recalled.
Castro was transferred to the Marion County Jail on
Monday night.
Kieta said he suffered swollen hands and a sore
back, but no serious injuries.
"When my wife was cleaning the blood off, she
said, 'I think it's all his,'" Kieta
said.

[AI] Retina Chip Implant

2008-04-27 Thread shahnaz
http://epaper.timesofindia.com/Default/Scripting/ArticleWin.asp?From=Archive&Source=Page&Skin=MM&BaseHref=MMIR/2008/04/22&PageLabel=30&EntityId=Ar03000&ViewMode=HTML&GZ=T

A group of American scientists have given a
visually-impaired
grandmother a chance to see her grandchildren dance
and play football.

Linda Moorfoot, who suffers from the eye condition
retinitis
pigmentosa that causes blindness, is thrilled after
having part of her
sight restored by a bionic eye.

The new invention is a tiny camera that scientists
hope to actually
insert into the eye within the next five years.

The new technology tested by Moorfoot uses an external
camera worn on
a pair of dark glasses. The camera sends images to a
radio receiver
implanted near the eye, which transmits a signal on to
a tiny silicon
and platinum chip that sits on the retina.

This information then goes down the optic nerve into
the brain.

Scientist Dr Mark Humayun has developed a small and
powerful camera
that could be implanted inside a patient's eye, rather
than worn on a
pair of glasses
"When I go to the grandkids' hockey game or soccer
game I can see
which direction the game is moving in," Moorfoot said.

"I can shoot baskets with my grandson. And I can see
my granddaughter
dancing across the stage. It's wonderful," she added.

The team led by Dr Mark Humayun - a professor of
ophthalmology and
biomedical engineering at the Doheny Eye Institute in
Los Angeles –
have now developed a small and powerful camera that
could be implanted
inside the patient's eye, rather than worn on a pair
of glasses.

"The camera is very, very small and very low power, so
it can go
inside your eye and couple your eye movement to where
the camera is,"
said Dr Humayun. "With this kind of missing
information, the brain can
fill in. This field is really blossoming."

"So in the next four to five years I hope, and we all
hope, that we
will see technology that's much more advanced," he
added.

"There are millions of people around the world with
sight loss. We
would welcome any developments that could prevent
sight loss and
restore sight," said Christina Nicolaidou, spokeswoman
for the
UK-based Royal National Institute of Blind (RNIB).

"This research could be exciting and we will be
following it over the
next few years to see how it develops," she added.
