Subject: [AI] new update of jaws released

 hi list
the new virtion of jaws jaws9.0.2169 may 2008 has been released

 The details are below:

Enhancements in JAWS 9.0.2169 (May 2008) The following reported items
were addressed in this update. All enhancements since the initial
 public beta release
 are included in the update.

JAWS AVG Anti-Virus 8.0 software no longer fails when you start the
application while JAWS is running. Resolved an issue where several
 customers reported
installation error #824 when trying to install JAWS after running some
a registry cleaner. This problem no longer occurs with versions
 9.0.2169 and later.
AOL Instant Messenger The aimhelper.jsh file is now again included
with JAWS 9.0. This file refers to constants and global variables used
 by the AOL Instant
Messenger help file script. Microsoft Excel JAWS now retains and reads
column and row titles that you set in multiple Excel worksheets.
 Before, when you
returned to the previous worksheet, JAWS would not announce column and
row titles (CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+C and CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+R). Microsoft Internet
 Explorer
After selecting the Skip to Content link on the Social Security
Administration Web page, JAWS now consistently moves to the next link
 when you press TAB.
When you press ENTER to turn Forms Mode off, it now turns off as the
Web page refreshes and updates. Microsoft Office JAWS no longer
 repeats the column
and row information when navigating by line (UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW)
in a one row, one column table. Microsoft Outlook When moving through
 a menu tree
list of folders in Outlook, JAWS correctly announces folder names as
you use the ARROW keys to navigate the list. Earlier, JAWS would say
 scroll down symbol
or scroll up symbol instead of the folder name. When navigating the
list of folders in the Move Items dialog box (CTRL+SHIFT+V) and the
 Copy Items dialog
box (CTRL+SHIFT+Y), JAWS no longer announces blank as you move from
one folder to another. E-mail messages no longer close when you select
 and copy message
text using the APPLICATION Key's Copy command. Microsoft PowerPoint
JAWS correctly reads text that is typed into PowerPoint edit fields
 (for example, the
File name field in the Open dialog box) when you use the Say Line
command (INSERT+UP ARROW). Previously, JAWS would announce blank.
 Microsoft Word JAWS
now announces the Word Count dialog box statistics when you press
ALT+T, W in Word 2007 or Word 2003 documents. JAWS now recognizes and
 announces when
text wraps to the next line in any text editor, word processor, or Web
page when using the Say All command with the read new line character
 function turned
on. The User Reads Text Containing New Line Character check box is in
the Text Processing dialog box of the Configuration Manager. When it
 is selected,
JAWS announces the words new line while reading and moving to the next
line of text in sentences and paragraphs.

 Thanks,

 srikanth

[AI] sound recording problem with hp's dv 6000 series laptops

2008-05-24 Thread dinesh thole
Hello friends, I am dinesh thole from pune.
I have a hp dv6516tx laptop with windows vista.
from the time I have purchased the laptop, I am facing sound recording problem
on the laptop.
the problem is, the recording done on the laptop is not clear
There is humming noise in the baground, after the recorded file is played.

There is disturbance in recording.

This problem is there, whether I do the recording using the internal mike or a
hai quality external mike.

I took the laptop to the service centre and they took the following actions
under the guidance of hp's technical support.

1. They restored the laptop to the factory condition by reinstalling windows
vista home premium through the recovery disks.

They also installed all the latest bios and the audio drivers, and all other
drivers.

they checked the various microphone settings in the realtek high definition
audio options in the control panel.

2. they changed the display panel on which the internal mike is placed.

3. they changed the motherboard on which the realtek high definition audio chip
is there.

4. they compared the recording with hp dv2000 model, which has the conecsant
audio chip.

the recording quality was very good on the dv 2000 model which has the
conecsant audio chip as compared with my laptop.

similar problem was there when they checked with the other laptop of the same
series which had the realtek chip.

hp's service center gave me a service report saying that it is a common problem
with this series laptops.

the senior technical people are saying that this is the limitation of the
laptop, and we can not do anything.

according to me, there is a problem with the realtek high definition audio chip
which they are providing with the hp dv6000 series laptops.

that is why not only my laptop, but all other laptops in the dv6000 series are
also having this problem.

since I need to do audio recording everyday, I am at a disadvantage after
buying this laptop.

I did not know about this problem before buying this laptop. otherwise I would
have bought any other model.

hp is not ready to do anything for me in this case even though there is a
manufacturing defect in the dv6000 series notebooks.

for trial, I recorded on soni, dell, compack laptops. but no laptop is having
such recording problem and the recording quality was very good on these
laptops.

I want to know if any of you is facing this kind of problem with the hp laptop.

also I would like the advice of the members on this list regarding this matter,
and what can I do further.

my laptop is in the warranty period.

also if advisable, I am ready to take this matter to the consumer court,
because just like me, I do not want other members to suffer after investing
good amount of money on these hp laptops.

so any of you are planning to purchase a hp laptop of the dv 6000 series, and
which has the realtek high definition audio chip, and if you are going to use
it for recording, then please check the laptop carefully. and if possible,
please select other model.

I request all the members to give me your valuable opinion and advice on this
matter at the earliest.

thanking you all.

warm regards.

dinesh thole.

Re: [AI] Sangeeta TTS for Jaws Required.

2008-05-24 Thread Neredimalli Annavaram

Hi,

Sangeeta is a text to speech Engine developed by Freedomscientific Group in
colaberation with real solo speak company. they claim that this particular
speech engine is designed especially for indian jaws users as the accent this
engine uses is little closer to indian english accent. but at least for me,
sucha claim seems to be half-understood part. I've installed Sangeeta on my
computer and used it for some time. the quality of its reading isn't really
good. one of the biggest problems with Sangeeta is its disrespect of
punctuation marks. it doesn't behave well with punctuation marks. you can use
it anyway for a change, but not as a permanent speech engine.

once after the installation, you've to select sappy-5 speech synthesiser, and
from there you can select Sangeeta voice and try it. this speech, once after
installation, will also be available even for your kurzweil software, if you're
using it.

hope this helps!

unfortunately, Sangeeta isn't available for download even as demo. however,
Freedomscientific and Sarah voices technologies seem to be so kind enough to
put their sample voice on their web for listeners to sample the voices. below I
paste the link that takes you to the web-page where you can listen to the voice
in MP3 format. its just a few second's sample! still, you can have a look and
feel it!

[AI] OneTouch external disk that can back up 1000 GB of data

2008-05-24 Thread renuka warriar

Date:25/05/2008 URL:
http://www.thehindu.com/2008/05/25/stories/2008052559571000.htm

National

OneTouch external disk that can back up 1000 GB of data

Anand Parthasarathy

Bangalore: With average personal computers coming with hard disk storage of
around one terabyte or 1000 GB, you might think, it is something only
enterprises
should be interested in. And you would be wrong.

Consider the explosion in digital content available to lay users like you and
me: movies running to a couple of GB each; digital cameras and handycams that
allow us to click a thousand pictures or a a few hundred minutes of video on
one memory card.

Where do we store all this stuff? That is why it is good news when the
industry's first one-terabyte portable external disk device comes to India.

The Maxtor OneTouch 4 (1TB) comes from disk storage leaders Seagate and clearly
they had lay users in mind while designing this starkly simple looking product.
It sits alongside the PC like an oversized 1-kg aluminium paperweight.

All its sockets which allow you to link to a PC using a USB connector ( or
Firewire if you are a Macintosh user) are at the back.

There are no buttons or switches.

But connect to your computer and the OneTouch software, kicks in to reduce most
operations to a click or two, like downloading and backing up various drives
of your PC, or even retaining an exact mirror image of all the files on your PC
or laptop using the SafetyDrill Recovery CD provided.

The Hindu received for review, one of the first units to reach India and it is
indeed made for dummies, though, its back-up and data encryption utility
will find many buyers among small businesses.

The asking price for the 1TB model is Rs. 14,000, though you can also buy
smaller capacity units starting at Rs. 5,200 for 250 GB.
