You can determine the name of the soundcard in use by going to device

just google it to find the compatible drivers for your device. It's as

Special Note:

Dear friends, this is a short description of my struggles for the past
30
years. But when compared with other great Visually-challenged achievers,
my
struggles are nothing. I hope that it will be helpful to the persons who

didn't realize their hidden skills and talents. If this document helps
or
motivates someone means, I will be glad for sharing ; otherwise excuse
me
for wasting your valuable time with this lengthy document. First I thank
my
parents, teachers, social workers and innumerable friends for helping me
to
reach this level. Please feel free to contact me with your comments,
suggestions and new ideas through below mentioned mobile or Email
address. I
am very pleased to receive them and ready to learn new things and
improve
myself.

Brief description about myself:

I am Saravanan Ramadoss. I was born on 11 May 1978 in a low-middle class

family group. My father is a laberor, mother and a younger brother, all
are
sighted. Even I too had vision until nine years. Then due to (RD -
retinal
detachment), due to unsuccessful operation from government hospital I
lost
my eyesight slowly. My parents took me to various eye hospitals, but no
use.
At that time my parents didn't know about the special schools and other
facilities for the visually impaired. So I spent some years at home, but
I
have strong faith in God. As a result of that faith, most of the time I
got
the maximum benefits beyond my level. Then my parents came to know about

(LFC - Little Flower Conment, Chennai. They took me there, I got
admission
for fourth standard. I learned Braille, mobility and many things there.
I
finnishe my primary education. After that, they guided me to St. Louis
Institute for the deaf and the blind, Chennai.

I spent almost 7 years in St. Louis institute starting from sixth to
twelfth
standard. I got little progress in my education. I was very good in
maths,
remaining subjects Tamil, social science and science were also okay, but

very weak in English. In both the schools my medium of education was
Tamil.
So I really had to work very hard to improve my English. I didn't
realize
the importance and show much interest in co-curricular activities like
Music, sports etc. When I reached ninth, I got some confidence in my
English
proficiency. It was then, I started learning chess and type writing. I
participated in Chess and GK quiz competitions in and around Chennai,
and
won some prizes.

In both the schools, we got all the fecilities like Braille notes,
Audiocassettes with tape recorders, and readers during week ends within
the
campus. In my SSLC (1995), I got 85% with 98 out of 100 marks in maths,
also
school first. But I didn't expect that at all; really it was a miracle
of
God. I thought that I have to do a different course considering my
highest
mark in maths. But my parents didn't allow me to take such risk. They
were
very protective. Our family income was meager and they didn't have
proper
education to gide or shape my future.

I was the first person to reach SSLC level with the top class marks from
my
family. I had to take a good decision to shape my future. So I discussed

with my school teachers, they advised me to take (HEAP - history,
economics,
Advanced English and political science). I took that course with their
guidance and got 73% in HSLC (1997. During that summer vacation, for the

first time I got a chance to play Chess in southern Zone level at
Shimoha. I
was the only junior candidate in below 20 level, all my fellow players
were
in their 30s and 40s, also regular attenders of various competitions. in

that category, I got 7th place in that tornament without proper
training.

After that I struggled a lot to reach my current position as an English
teacher in Government School, Chennai. I applied for B.a English lit in
top
3 colleges in Chennai. I got seat in 2 colleges, but nnot in hostel. So
my
parents forced me to do some special technical courses ment for the
visually
challenged. So I joined for stenno training at NIVH in Chennai. I
dropped my
previous plan of regular degree, but I joined BA English Literature in
correspondence in Madras university. When I was in NIVH, I got a chance
to
represent the institute in National Level Chess competition at Pune.
There I
got 6/9 points without proper coaching. One side I finished stenno
course
(1998) and searching a good job. On

[AI] Hands On Learning For The Visually Impaired

2008-06-10 Thread pradeep banakar
ScienceDaily (Jun. 9, 2008

When you think of the solar system you probably picture a textbook
diagram: nine planets, different sizes and colours, all circling the
bright yellow sun. But how can a visually impaired child take in this
information? How can they grasp how the solar system works?

European researchers have developed a computer program that lets
sighted and visually impaired pupils explore space together. Using a
special device similar to a robotic arm, a visually impaired child can
move around the solar system and hear about the planets.

Sighted children can guide their visually impaired partners. As they
move the mouse, the pressure and resistance in the robot arm gently
nudges the visually impaired user in the right direction.

Visionary research

The space explorer is just one of many applications developed by the
EU-funded MICOLE project which is bringing multi-modal interfaces into
the classroom.

The software is one of the first releases of multi-modal educational
computer programs. It allows sighted children and the visually
impaired to collaborate, helping to remove some of the barriers that
the latter group faces every day in mainstream education.

Multi-modal computing is on the rise. Soon a third sense could be
added to the sight and sound that computers currently use as their
mode of output. Haptic devices, such as the robot arm, enable users to
control computers as if they were using a mouse. Such devices also
provide output – of movement, pressures or even raised bumps to
deliver information to the user via the sense of touch.

This output is exploited in another MICOLE application. Current
software drawing software allows pupils to create pictures, but the
lines are in relief.

Using the haptic device, they can actually feel the picture. As they
move a virtual stylus over the picture on the screen the pupils can
sense the raised lines through the device communicated to their
fingertips.

Collaborative design

These applications have been very welcomed in our test classrooms,
says project coordinator Roope Raisamo. It has been wonderful to see
visually impaired and sighted children really working together and
sharing the same experiences and opportunities.

Our aim was to allow blind people to create, manipulate and share
information using hearing and touch to replace use of vision, and to
work with other blind and sighted people. We want to see visually
impaired people take a full role in society and work at an equal level
with sighted people.

Before MICOLE, very little was known about how multi-modality could be
used when blind people work alongside those with full sight. But
through its user-centred approach – lots of observation, focus groups,
consultation and field-testing – the MICOLE partners have greatly
added to our understanding about such collaborative work.

Adding the sense of touch to information and communication technology
is just getting to the point where it can be commercialised, Raisamo
continues. The first people to benefit are people with disabilities,
especially people who are blind or have visual impairment. The more
senses you can use, the more multi-modal your computer interface, the
more inclusive the technology can be.

Much of the knowledge that the team has built up during the project's
three years have been incorporated into guidelines for software
developers on how to develop successful applications for collaborative
learning.

Raisamo believes the project has increased the potential for
successful commercialisation of multi-modal software in all fields.

A feeling for the future

MICOLE's researchers have done far more than publish theoretical
documents and produce a few prototype applications. Their main output
comes in the form of the 'MICOLE architecture' and an accompanying
software development toolkit. The architecture is like a high level
programming language. It provides the virtual environment – all the
processes and mechanisms for software applications to function in a
multi-modal fashion.

It is designed so that software developers can quickly build new
multi-modal applications for the visually impaired and can be used for
applications in widespread disciplines including medicine, education
or 'edutainment'.

We've made it an open source architecture to encourage more people to
access it, spread it, and adapt it for their own requirements without
worrying about licenses or intellectual property, says Raisamo.

So far 14 organisations from outside the project have downloaded the
architecture and toolkit files in the first six months since these
were made available for download on the project's website.

This is encouraging, Raisamo says. We know that several groups are
working on new applications and we hope that the market will take off
soon.

Reachin Technology, a key MICOLE partner and a distributor of the
haptic robot device, could be one of the first to sell multi-modal
software based on MICOLE's research.

Fully functional

Now, software solution for SMEs in 3 minutes

Chitra Unnithan Archana Mohan in Ahmedabad | June 09, 2008 | 14:09 IST

For long, technology has been the biggest constraint for small and medium
enterprises (SMEs) wanting to bring about a faster turnaround rate considering
they are usually cash-strapped. But this could soon change.

Two ex-IIT Kharagpur students have decided to come out of their comfortable
professional zones to create a venture called 'Demazi', which would enable SMEs
to create their own IT solution online at a minimal cost.

Umesh Kumar and Ratnesh Deepak, the duo behind Demazi, short for 'Development
made easy', have come up with a concept of developing a website that provides
a platform for those who are interested in creating a software of their own and
cannot afford high-end solutions currently available in the market. SMEs
owners can log on to the website and key in the requirments they need from the
software.

Based on the requirements, the website will automatically generate the software
code which the SME owner can run within 3 minutes. Right from small financial
calculators, tax planners, contact management to complex solutions like
Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP),
the website is programmed to provide the input in matter of a few minutes.

Umesh Kumar, one of the developers of the website says that since the website
is fully-programmed for generating software, there is no human cost involved,
making it less capital intensive.

The revenue model is based on the subscription charged on each user and the
software, which Umesh insists is well within the SME owner's pocket. The
business
plan for the venture is being developed under iAccelerator, which is a summer
start-up camp organised by Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad
(IIM-Ahmedabad)'s
Centre for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE), Microsoft,
Kuruvindum, NASSCOM and Kickstart.in.

IIM students would be working closely in commercialising the prototype. While
investment required for the venture and the business plan is still being
discussed, the duo will soon be talking to angel investors and venture
capitalists for giving them the initial push.

2008-06-10 Thread Rajesh Asudani
Maybe, but what happens in my case with fine reader 5 sprint and hp 2400
scanner is that recognition starts immediately after scanning a page without
waiting for multiple pages to be scanned and I have invariably to save it
before scanning the next. This happens even after selecting scann multiple
images command.

I had requested a solution in accessindia some time ago, without success.

We can actually save multiple pages as one file even with HP 2400 or with
any other scanner. Pressing Control S wil activate the Save Pages dialogue

All Pages.

The company plans to provide information about the other parts of the country

[AI] Tech Dose of the day: Scrum

2008-06-10 Thread vishnu ramchandani
Scrum
Dosed by Swapna K M – M E Team (from MphasiS Software Services)
What is a Scrum?
Scrum is an iterative, incremental process for developing any product or
managing any work. It produces a potentially shippable set of functionality at
the end of every iteration.

What is its usefulness?
1. Productivity increases:
• Some Scrum teams have recorded a 4x increase in productivity
• Most improve productivity by 10-20% depending on management commitment
2. Continuous improvement:
• Scrum enables continuous, rapid, bottom-up reengineering
3. Leverages the chaos
• The product becomes a series of manageable chunks
• Progress is made, even when requirements are not stable
• Everything is visible to everyone
• Team communication improves
• The team shares successes along the way and at the end
• Customers see on-time delivery of increments
• Customers obtain frequent feedback on how the product actually works
• A relationship with the customer develops, trust builds, and knowledge grows
• A culture is created where everyone expects the project to succeed
Scrum Process:
The Scrum process has five phases: Planning, System Architecture / High Level
Design, Sprint, Sprint Review and Closure.

[AI] Apple unveils new iPhone with faster Internet speed

2008-06-10 Thread renuka warriar
The Hindu News Update Service
default/empty
News Update Service
Tuesday, June 10, 2008 : 0230 Hrs
Sci. Tech.
Apple unveils new iPhone with faster Internet speed

SAN FRANCISCO (AP): Apple Inc. unveiled an upgraded iPhone Monday with a faster
Internet connection and GPS capabilities - and priced $200 lower than current
models.

Analysts have said Apple needed to slash the multimedia gadget's price and
upgrade it to work over so-called 3G, or third-generation, wireless networks
to hit the company's target of selling 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008.

An 8 gigabyte model is to sell for $199 starting July 11. A 16 gigabyte model
will cost $299. They will come in a black case with a white case optional
on one model. The devices are to roll out initially in 22 countries.

Apple has inked deals for wireless carriers in a total of 70 countries to carry
the new iPhone.

Apple's participation in the cell phone market has been hurt by complaints
about the year-old iPhone's data download speeds, which can make simple tasks
like sending pictures over e-mail or downloading Internet videos painfully
slow.

The original iPhones operate on so-called 2.5G networks. The upgrade in
performance from those networks to 3G will be similar to the difference between
a dial-up Internet connection and a high-speed broadband connection.

Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs said the computer chips used on the faster
network sapped too much battery life and were too bulky when the iPhone was
being designed so the company decided to wait to improve the device until
better chip technology emerged that could fit the iPhone's slim design.

The addition of global-positioning technology improves the iPhone's accuracy in
locating users. Current versions use a combination of cell phone towers
and Wi-Fi locations to help users figure out where they are.

Jobs showed off the phone at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in San
Francisco. His announcements were widely expected.

Hi everybody,
I'm Shakir director of Empower Institute of Self Development. I'm a
novice to Access India, thirty year old, unmarried and a freelance
H.R.D. trainer by profession. I'd like to thank Mr.Vamshi for
introducing me to this new world. Being a success coach,
during the last three years I've led over hundred workshops at over
sixty organisations including software, insurance, hospitality, real
estate, elevator, jewelry etc. industries across India.

At age five I got complete blindness due to Glaucoma. I'm pleased to
tell you that by sheer will power and determination I became the first
blind to do M.B.A. in A.P., with electives in human resource
management and financial management. I got my second masters degree in
English literature. Also, my name has been enlisted in page 103 of The
prestigious Limca Book of Records of 2002 edition for transcribing the
holy Quran into English Braille. For all my achievements I was
felicitated by his Excellency the former president of India Dr.
A.P.J.Abdul Kalam on 1 February 2007.

My strength lies in inspiring and motivating people, thereby helping
them to bridge the gap between what they are and what they can be.
I believe that Access India is an excellent platform wherein all
visually challenged from every nook and corner of the country can
interact, share and help one another selflessly. I'd like to end the
mail by congratulating the person who came out with the idea to form
Access India. Bye.

Yours affectionately,

Shakir.

you can scan easily with Fine reader and you can save multy pages in one

when you open fine reader, Scan and read Option is there if you press
enter on it, you can scan and read simultaniously.
if you wan't to save it in same file, when you press Control S save as
dialog box will come you press tab and you need to select option
called save pages in single file.

 hope this will help you.
if you have any questions let me know.

Re: [AI] Doubt regarding audio and video devices.

2008-06-10 Thread Syed Imran
If the OS is not loaded, then your best bet I think is to either do a search
on your model number or just contact the service center. There's one another
way if you are willing to take the risk, however, is to open the casing and
have a look at it with your sighted acquaintance. Do this only if your
device is out of warrantee. And needless to say if the sighted person is
little technically advanced, you stand on luck

Of course we can go and check about the graphic card and sound card by
 going to the device manager.
But, How can we know about these things if the OS is not loaded?

 Special Note:

Dear friends, this is a short description of my struggles for the past 30
years. But when compared with other great Visually-challenged achievers,
 my
struggles are nothing. I hope that it will be helpful to the persons who
didn't realize their hidden skills and talents. If this document helps or
motivates someone means, I will be glad for sharing ; otherwise excuse me
for wasting your valuable time with this lengthy document. First I thank
 my
parents, teachers, social workers and innumerable friends for helping me
 to
reach this level. Please feel free to contact me with your comments,
suggestions and new ideas through below mentioned mobile or Email address.
 I
am very pleased to receive them and ready to learn new things and improve
 myself.

 Brief description about myself:

I am Saravanan Ramadoss. I was born on 11 May 1978 in a low-middle class
family group. My father is a laberor, mother and a younger brother, all
 are
sighted. Even I too had vision until nine years. Then due to (RD - retinal
detachment), due to unsuccessful operation from government hospital I lost
my eyesight slowly. My parents took me to various eye hospitals, but no
 use.
At that time my parents didn't know about the special schools and other
facilities for the visually impaired. So I spent some years at home, but I
have strong faith in God. As a result of that faith, most of the time I
 got
the maximum benefits beyond my level. Then my parents came to know about
(LFC - Little Flower Conment, Chennai. They took me there, I got admission
for fourth standard.

I was very good in maths,
remaining subjects Tamil, social science and science were also okay, but
very weak in English. In both the schools my medium of education was
 Tamil.
So I really had to work very hard to improve my English. I didn't realize
the importance and show much interest in co-curricular activities like
Music, sports etc. When I reached ninth, I got some confidence in my
 English
proficiency. It was then, I started learning chess and type writing. I
participated in Chess and GK quiz competitions in and around Chennai, and
 won some prizes.

In both the schools, we got all the fecilities like Braille notes,
Audiocassettes with tape recorders, and readers during week ends within
 the
campus. In my SSLC (1995), I got 85% with 98 out of 100 marks in maths,
 also
school first. But I didn't expect that at all; really it was a miracle of
God. I thought that I have to do a different course considering my highest
mark in maths. But my parents didn't allow me to take such risk. They were
very protective. Our family income was meager and they didn't have proper
education to gide or shape my future.

During that summer vacation, for the
first time I got a chance to play Chess in southern Zone level at Shimoha.
 I
was the only junior candidate in below 20 level, all my fellow players
 were
in their 30s and 40s, also regular attenders of various competitions. in
that category, I got 7th place in that tornament without proper training.

After that I struggled a lot to reach my current position as an English
teacher in Government School, Chennai. I applied for B.a English lit in
 top
3 colleges in Chennai. I got seat in 2 colleges, but nnot in hostel. So my
parents forced me to do some special technical courses ment for the
 visually
challenged. So I joined for stenno training at NIVH in Chennai. I dropped
 my
previous plan of regular degree, but I joined BA English Literature in
correspondence in Madras university. When I was in NIVH, I got a chance to
represent the institute in National Level Chess competition at Pune. There
 I
got 6/9 points without proper coaching. One side I finished stenno course
(1998) and searching a good job. On the other side I cleared first year
papers of B.a degree. In distant mode of education, I had to manage
everything (recording cassettes, arranging scribes and other things) on my
 own.

As you are all aware, our life depends upon the

overcome the subjects irrelevant to the purpose for which access india

[AI] Emergency! Dial 108 from anywhere

2008-06-10 Thread Rajesh Asudani

By Our Staff Reporter

Bhopal, June 10: The Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI) will
be starting its emergency services in Madhya Pradesh soon. According to a
press statement issued here on Tuesday, Union Telecom minister A Raja has
indicated to Health minister Ambumani Ramadoss that 108 is being finalised as
the national toll free trauma care number to the institution. The number 108
could soon become India's version of 911-the number the US dials for emergency,
the release added.

Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are already using 108 as the emergency
toll free number. Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu recently signed
an MoU with the Institute for this purpose. States like JK, Assam, and Kerala
too are finalising plans for designating 108 for all emergency purposes,
the release informed.

Once a caller dials 108, a 24 hour call-centre will receive the information,
locate an ambulance closest to the emergency spot through GPRS technology
and dispatch it within the golden hour.

The Institute has received top recognition in the health care category at the
2008 computer world honours programme. This award ceremony was held in
Washington.
The award was received by Verghese Jacob, chief integrator and lead partner of
Byraju Foundation.

When one calls 108 to report an emergency, the call receiver at the Emergency
Response Center (ERC) will gather the necessary information, regarding the
type of Emergency and the location of the emergency scene whether, the call is
from a District, Mandal, City, Town, exact location, landmark. After gathering
the information, the Dispatch Officer in the Emergency Response Centre
dispatches either the Ambulance, Fire vehicle or the Police vehicle depending on
the type of Emergency.
