You are probeblly not giving enough of time for all the installation
packages to be downloaded and installed. When you hear 100%, that's
just the message for the initial EXE file and that file actually
downloads other required files and unpacks them for installation. So
If I were, I would just click on the initial download button and just
forget it until I get the next message regarding installation.

[AI] Working towards one laptop per school

2008-06-30 Thread renuka warriar

Date:01/07/2008 URL:
http://www.thehindu.com/2008/07/01/stories/2008070156352400.htm

Front Page

Working towards one laptop per school

Anand Parthasarathy

New scheme from Kerala's [EMAIL PROTECTED] programme

Students at an IT fair at the Munderi Vocational Higher Secondary School in
Wayanad district of Kerala try their hands at a laptop computer.

Thiruvananthapuram: The much-hyped computer initiative for the world's
children, mooted by Nicholas Negropante of the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology
was named One Laptop Per Child (OLPC). The pragmatic planners of Kerala's
Information Technology programme for schools, have set themselves a more
achievable
target: One Laptop Per School (OLPS) but that is just for starters.

Having fuelled the IT revolution in education by providing over 1,000
State-funded schools with three personal computers each last year, with a
Rs.51-crore
grant from the Centre, Kerala's [EMAIL PROTECTED] programme has just launched a
new scheme to harness the next instalment of Rs.10 crore: They are procuring
laptop
computers one for every government school which will help teachers, prepare
multimedia instructional material and carry them from class to class, together
with a state-of-the-art digital projector which has already been provided.

"Thanks to the negotiating power we commanded by bundling the entire State's
requirement, we were able to procure the desktop PCs last year at almost 30
per cent lower prices than the lowest rate offered to the Director General of
Supplies and Disposals (DGS&D)," says Anvar Sadath, Executive Director of
the [EMAIL PROTECTED] programme.

"We hope to achieve similar pricing with laptops and expect to procure good
configurations for around Rs.20,000 a piece. For the projectors based on the
latest Digital Light Processor (DLP) technology, we obtained prices that were
half the DGS&D rates."

The programme expects to gradually expand the base of laptops given to schools
and will shortly put in place a loan scheme that will allow teachers to acquire
personal machines at the bulk rate obtained by the State from leading
manufacturers. "We could well provide more laptops to each school but first we
have
to help the schools to beef up their security arrangements: many of them do not
have a safe way to store the machines."

Kerala's educational planners have been among the first to realise that the
power requirements of large computer installations can be a formidable recurring
expense: desktop machines need uninterruptible power supplies and if the
network in a school is large, even some airconditioning. These are proving to
be major annual outflows. The future lies in low power platforms like laptops,
they feel.

Portable platforms like laptops will also allow schools to access the Internet
more easily: Mr. Sadath told The Hindu on Monday, that the government hopes
to tie up with the public sector BSNL to provide wireless Net access cards for
the laptops at a special rate which will make every machine a broadband
device.

The procurement processes are almost complete and some 1,000-State run and
aided high schools should have their laptops by September, with another 3,000
schools including higher secondary and vocational schools being equipped during
the current academic year, he added.

Dear Friend,

I have been using Tally regularly for the past several years.

Tally is mostly accessible with JAWS due to the Tally scrips developed by
NAB Delhi. In areas where there is still lack of accessibility, navigating
with the JAWS cursor allows us to get the necessary information.

In case you need any further assistance, please feel free to write to me on

[AI] Banks Guidelines

2008-06-30 Thread pamnani
Friends,
You are aware that the RBI had issued a circular on 4 th June 2008 after which
we had met the Officials at IBA. At that time we had explained the situation
and offered to suggest draft Guidelines from the IBA to the Banks.

I have finally been able to work out an initial draft which I am copying here
for everyones comments.
PART 1 is the Representation to explain the situation and to this will be
annexed the various Orders etc.
I didnt think it necessary to spell out our misery in more detail as they know
the situation.
Part 2 is the Guidelines. Please concentrate on this and let me know if
anything needs to be added or altered.
Thank you all for the support and a big thank you to the XRCVC.
Please enjoy reading the 10 pages and lets have your comments quickly on or off
the list. i would be grateful if you sent the comments on
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Kanchan

Part 1

Representation regarding Banking Services on behalf of the Visually Impaired

This Representation has been drafted on behalf of scores of visually impaired
persons who use or propose to use banking facilities. It has been necessitated
due to:

a. Certain branches of certain Banks not allowing the visually impaired
to open bank accounts and

b. Certain Branches of certain banks not allowing their visually impaired
customers to avail of all the facilities and services being offered by the Bank
to other customers.

The afore mentioned discrimination and denial is due to either the Officers of
the Banks not being aware of or the improper interpretation of the:

a. The Constitution of India (Articles 14, 16, 19, and 21)

b. The Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection Of Rights And
Full Participation) Act, 1995

c. Interim order dated 28 April 2006 of the Gauhati High Court in Writ Petition
No. 2215 of 2006 in Prasanna Kumar Pincha v/s. Union Bank of India & ors.

d. judgement dated 5 September 2005 in VP Singhania Versus Banking Division,
Min. of Finance CCPD Court Case No. 2791/2003

e. IBA Circular No. CIR/RB/1230 dated 4th February 2006.

f. United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
ratified by India on 1st October 2007

g. Letter dated 4 May 2008 of the Chief Commissioner for persons with
disabilities addressed to the Secretary of the Banking Division.

h. RBI Circular dated 4th June 2008

At the outset we would like to bring to your attention that the visually
impaired in India are not a homogeneous group but consist of the following
types:

  Those who use Signatures
Those whose signatures do not tally
 Those who use Thumb impression

  Totally Blind or Low Vision
 Totally Blind

  Literate
Senior Citizens, late blind etc. In most cases literate
Some are literate while others are illiterate

May want to open a new Bank account

May want additional facilities and services in an existing Bank account

facilities and services in an existing bank account

May have existing facilities and services but the Bank may deny the use of
these on renewal or otherwise

Education has transformed the visually impaired from dependant to independent
Earners and Contributing members of Society. Increase in life span, accidents
and work related issues have increased the numbers and the demographic profile
of the Visually Impaired. This change has led to the Visually Impaired needing
and wanting to use the services and facilities available to the other members
of Society.

Technology like screen readers for computers and mobile phones have not only
been instrumental in enhancing the productivity of the Visually Impaired but
have also made it possible for the Visually Impaired to avail of the services
and facilities of Banks independently and safely.

Therefore the categorization of all the Visually Impaired with the illiterate,
denial of services/facilities , , the reluctance of understanding at the ground
level, over zealousness of the Bank officials and the myriad other problems
faced by the Visually impaired is the reason for this Representation.

The Visually Impaired understand that Circulars and guidelines in the past have
been issued by the Authorities to protect them however instead of protection
some of the guidelines themselves have been discriminatory and a hindrance. A
few instances of burdensome requirements are mentioned herein below:

a. Certain Banks do not require a prospective customer to visit the branch
office while opening an account however they do insist on a Visually Impaired
Prospective customer, who anyway finds it difficult to go physically from one
place to another, to be physically present in the branch office to open an
account. This adds to the hardship already faced by visually impaired persons.

b. Any guideline which restricts the Visually Impaired customer f

You may also wish to restore your system to an earlier date to see if
the issue gets resolved. If your restore process was enabled, then
there should have been a restoration point created when the windows
media player got updated. So if restore your system to a previous date
than that particular restore point, the issue may be solved and you
don't have to perform all those technical steps listed on the
Microsoft webpage. This is basically the problem in a particular
software wender taking control of user's computer.

2008-06-30 Thread Roopakshi Pathania
Hi,

When ever a pdf document is protected, the message says: alert: empty page.
The solution is to perform an OCR on the document. This can be done by
FineReader or Kerzweil (not sure if it has the facility) or use the free pdf to
ocr programme.
When a document is secured and the author does not want it to be misused,
certain security features are used with in adobe reader. Encountering such a
document by jaws or any other screen reader leads to the security failure
message.
Again the solution can be to perform an ocr, but it may not give results.
This is because the document may very well be a pdf file and not a scanned
image. In that case ocr would not help.
However, its worth a try as it might well be the reason for inaccessibility.

Adobe 6 or 7 may be used with 98.

Regards

You are probeblly not giving enough of time for all the installation
packages to be downloaded and installed. When you hear 100%, that's
just the message for the initial EXE file and that file actually
downloads other required files and unpacks them for installation. So
If I were, I would just click on the initial download button and just
forget it until I get the next message regarding installation.

Re: [AI] Migrating to Airtel DSL triple 5 combo

2008-06-30 Thread Syed Imran
That's fine, but I'm trying out to know how many of us pay less than Rs.
624, and what kind of benefits they receive in return. Did you say "EVDO
card"? how does it work (is it a pre-paid card)?

[AI] Need the Vendor's list of Braille Typewriters

2008-06-30 Thread SC Vashishth
Dear friends,
My organisation at Dooars (North Bengal) is in need of few good Braillers
for they are starting the vocational training cell for the Blind children
there. Another network organisation in Bhutan also requires the same.

I need to know the details of vendors who can supply cost effective 5-8
braillers for the organisation. I would be grateful if any body could share
information about the vendors and the price per brailler.

[AI] Problem in Selecting Text.

2008-06-30 Thread Amiyo Biswas
Hello,

Whenever I am trying to use ctrl+a or ctrl+shift +left arrow or ctrl+shift
+right arrow to select text in any programme, say notepad or word, the entire
page is getting right aligned and the text is reversed from right to left.
Suppose, the word "access" will become "ssecca". It is happening only on my
home computer having windows xp sp2. However, I faced the same problem on
another pc having windows xp home. What may be the problem? I have faced it for
quite some time, but never bothered about it. As soon as I found it on another
pc, I thought, there may be a solution for it. There is no problem if I can
select text avoiding the ctrl key. Navigation keys like ctrl+arrow key is
working all right.

Best regards,

Amiyo.

Mumbai: Underground lifts, ramps, platforms that have wheel chair access,
toilets for the disabled-this is the Bombay high court's vision to make
railway platforms disabled friendly.

The HC on Thursday sought a report on the facilities for disabled at railway
platforms in Mumbai. Hearing a public interest litigation on the lack of such
facilities, a division bench of Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice V M
Kanade asked lawyers Mihir Desai and Suresh Kumar to visit Mumbai Central
station for verifying the ground reality at railway platforms. The report has
to be submitted before the next date of hearing which is scheduled for July 10.

"Right from the stage that a person gets out of his car at the parking lot
to the time he boards a train, the railway stations should make available
disabled friendly facilities,'' said the Chief Justice. The court was
hearing a PIL filed by India Centre for Human Rights and Law to make urban
transport in the city accessible to the disabled.

Adobe Acrobat 6 is the best version for windows 98. I am still using windows
98 with adobe5 on my office computer. However, the accessibility may be a
problem on account of password protection or if the file is a scanned image.
In that case Jaws cannot read these files.

Best regards,

Amiyo.

Re: [AI] mp3

2008-06-30 Thread Amiyo Biswas
Hello,

According to my experience, files with 8 plus 3 naming convention follow in
exactly alphabetical order in Winamp, in mp3player and cd player. Files with
larger names are randomly selected by most players.

If you want to create your own sequence, rename the files following 8 plus 3
names. Better if you put numbers 01, 02, 03 and so on at the beginning of
the names.

Best regards,

Amiyo.
