Re: [AI] Canada refuses entry to a disabled girl (London Daily Telegraph)

2008-08-07 Thread SC Vashishth
Its quite shocking. I was looking at from other angle too as to what might
be the possible threat that makes Canadian Authorities do that! Do they feel
the disabling is contagious and will be a health risk for fellow Canadians!
or they are scared of disability claims/benefits which they might have to
extend to residents with disabilities. But nothing in clear yet!

Canada 'refuses entry to disabled girl'

A British family who planned to start a new life in Canada were
refused entry because their daughter has learning difficulties and
have been forced to return
home.

Paul and Barbara-Anne Chapman had sold their home and bought a
farmhouse in Nova Scotia where the local authorities supported their
arrival.

But after a six-hour flight the family claim they were told by a
border guard that because Lucy, seven, is disabled she would never be
allowed into the
country.

Canadian immigration officials have suggested the Chapmans may have
been turned back because they lacked the necessary work permit.

The family believed they had the necessary paperwork in place, down to
the clearance required for their black labrador, Harvey.

Mr Chapman, a former Metropolitan police officer, said the problem
began when the border guard looked at their passports at Halifax
airport.

"The atmosphere changed. She said: 'why have you brought your daughter
to this country?'" he said.

"I asked why I shouldn't I bring her and was told by the border guard
that because she was disabled she had a lifetime ban.

"We couldn't believe what they were saying."

Lucy suffers from a rare genetic defect called Angelman syndrome, a
condition that leaves her with a reduced mental age and without the
ability to speak.
Physically, she appears normal, has an average life expectancy and
requires no additional medical care or drugs.

Mrs Chapman, 45, also a former police officer in London, said: "I have
never, ever in my whole life seen such blatant discrimination. Lucy is
different
and therefore in their eyes not perfect.

"I kept saying to them: 'So because my daughter is disabled you are
telling me she can't come in?' and they simply said 'yes'."

"My dog was allowed to stay. My dog has a higher status than my
daughter in Canada, just because she is disabled."

After a five-hour stand off the family was allowed to leave the
airport but their passports were seized. Eighteen days later they were
asked to leave the
country.

Their plan to move to Canada had been hatched in 2005 when Mr Chapman
applied for leave to study at Ontario University.

Although national law at the time meant Lucy's condition would have
barred them from entering, a Canadian Supreme Court ruling a few
months later led to
the blanket ban on disabled immigrants being lifted.

Attracted by lower prices, the higher standard of living and Canada's
recent drive to welcome 50,000 skilled workers, the Chapmans thought
it would be the
perfect place for Lucy and her brother Jack, aged 16 years.

After visiting Canada twice as tourists they sold their four-bedroom
home in Wokingham, Berks., for £600,000 and bought a two-acre plot in
Miller Lake,
Halifax County, for just £140,000 pounds.

The Chapmans employed a visa consultancy firm to organise their
residency application and the Nova Scotian authorities applied for
temporary residency and
a three-year work permit in their name that would allow them to set up
a children's soft play centre business in their local mall.

They have employed a Canadian lawyer to fight their case and have
vowed not to give up.

A spokesman for Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) said he was
unable to comment on the Chapman case specifically.

"People with disabilities can come to Canada," he said.

"In Canada we have rules and regulations to protect the Canadian
people and we have to make sure that the proper process is followed.

"It is not that we do not want them (the Chapmans) herethey just have
to follow the proper process, which includes ensuring the residency
permit is in place
before arriving in Canada."

[AI] SMS problem with a particular number

2008-08-07 Thread CHETAN SHARMA
Hello Access Indians!

I am facing a peculiar problem with respect to sending SMS to a particular
number. When I send an SMS to a MTNL cell phone from my airtel, it does
not reach the recipient. The same problem is with that number also. when she
sends an sms it does not reach my airtel phone. Both of us have launched
complaint with our respective service providers, but airtel says that
everything is ok with them and problem is with MTNL. similarly, MTNL people
are telling the same story that there is something wrong with airtel. The
most surprising thing is that we both are able to send and receive SMS to
and from other MTNL and airtel numbers without any hindrance.

  any remedies?

[AI] WAI-ARIA Overview

2008-08-07 Thread Roopakshi Pathania
Introduction

WAI-ARIA, the Accessible Rich Internet Applications Suite, defines a way to
make Web content and Web applications more accessible to people with
disabilities.
It especially helps with dynamic content and advanced user interface controls
developed with Ajax, HTML, JavaScript, and related technologies. Currently
certain functionality used in Web sites is not available to some users with
disabilities, especially people who rely on screen readers and people who cannot
use a mouse. WAI-ARIA addresses these accessibility challenges, for example, by
defining new ways for functionality to be provided to assistive technology.
With WAI-ARIA, developers can make advanced Web applications accessible and
usable to people with disabilities.

This page describes the problems that WAI-ARIA addresses, and introduces the
WAI-ARIA suite of technical documents.

Making Ajax and Related Technologies Accessible

Figure 1: Tree control

Web sites are increasingly using more advanced and complex user interface
controls, such as tree controls for Web site navigation like the example in
Figure
1. To provide an accessible user experience to people with disabilities,
assistive technologies need to be able to interact with these controls. However,
the information that the assistive technologies need is not available with most
current Web technologies.

Another example of an accessibility barrier is drag-and-drop functionality that
is not available to users who use a keyboard only and cannot use a mouse.
Even relatively simple Web sites can be difficult if they require an extensive
amount of keystrokes to navigate with only a keyboard.

Many Web applications developed with Ajax (also known as AJAX), DHTML, and
other technologies pose additional accessibility challenges. For example, if
the content of a Web page changes in response to user actions or time- or
event-based updates, that new content may not be available to some people, such
as people who are blind or people with cognitive disabilities who use a screen
reader.

WAI-ARIA addresses these accessibility challenges by defining how information
about this functionality can be provided to assistive technology. With WAI-ARIA,
an advanced Web application can be made accessible and usable to people with
disabilities.

Technical Solutions

More specifically, WAI-ARIA provides a framework for adding attributes to
identify features for user interaction, how they relate to each other, and their
current state. WAI-ARIA describes new navigation techniques to mark regions and
common Web structures as menus, primary content, secondary content, banner
information, and other types of Web structures. For example, with WAI-ARIA,
developers can identify regions of pages and enable keyboard users to easily
move among regions, rather than having to press Tab many times.

WAI-ARIA also includes technologies to map controls, Ajax live regions, and
events to accessibility application programming interfaces (APIs), including
custom controls used for rich Internet applications. WAI-ARIA techniques apply
to widgets such as buttons, drop-down lists, calendar functions, tree controls
(for example, expandable menus), and others.

WAI-ARIA provides Web authors with the following:

list of 6 items
• Roles to describe the type of widget presented, such as "menu," "treeitem,"
"slider," and "progressmeter"
• Roles to describe the structure of the Web page, such as headings, regions,
and tables (grids)
• Properties to describe the state widgets are in, such as "checked" for a
check box, or "haspopup" for a menu.
• Properties to define live regions of a page that are likely to get updates
(such as stock quotes), as well as an interruption policy for those updates—for
example, critical updates may be presented in an alert dialog box, and
incidental updates occur within the page
• Properties for drag-and-drop that describe drag sources and drop targets
• A way to provide keyboard navigation for the Web objects and events, such as
those mentioned above

Re: [AI] open office? or microsoft office.

2008-08-07 Thread B. Kannan
We are using open office.org in our office. Jaws does not read the
spreadsheet application properly in open office.org. Jaws does not even read
the rows and columns correctly. The presentation programme is not supported
by jaws. We can only work in word processor programme. We are using the
latest version of open office.org and jaws 9.0. So in my opinion, MS office
is best for accessibility.

[AI] Apple is turning its friends into enemies

Apple is turning its friends into enemies

London, (GUARDIAN NEWS SERVICE)

By Charles Arthur

Apple's disdain for badly designed outside software is hurting it more than it
knows. The developers who were ready to be its friends are turning into its
enemies

Good design is really rare. From this I think we can conclude that it's really
difficult. I was thinking about this as I watched the comments pile up earlier
this week on the Technology blog post pointing to a rant about the usability -
or otherwise - of free software (bit.ly/use2). But as the commenters pointed
out, it's not only free software that suffers from this problem, which implies
logically that the problem lies not in the cost of the software, but in
the process and the people involved.

For instance, I've never come across a piece of software from Microsoft that
left me breathless in amazement at its combination of simplicity and power.
With Microsoft, you get either/or. You get software that does a couple of
things and doesn't trouble you, or you get something that can do something near
to a billion things, and tells you all about most of them all the time. I still
find it a frustrating business visiting the network control panel in Windows
XP: it's like the sketch, decades old but still relevant, of the man going into
a hi-fi shop and asking for "a gramophone". At which the shop assistants
turn like radar dishes and begin mercilessly poking fun at the man, asking
absurd questions about what he wants. XP's network control panel treats me the
same way. There are all sorts of weird things in there, most of which I'm not
interested in. And the ones I am interested in are hidden or wrapped in such
obtuse language that I give up.

You're thinking that I'm going to say that Apple is a paragon of good design -
and on both the hardware and computer software front, it often is. It frequently
conforms to the idea that the zenith of design is reached when you can't take
anything more away, rather than when you can't add any more.

But here's the interesting thing. Apple is very good at design: you can measure
its abrupt improvement in hardware design back pretty much to the day when
Steve Jobs rejoined the company in 1996. The role of Jobs was to champion the
winning design; because before that Jonathan Ive's genius was well-hidden
in the boring beige boxes Apple churned out.

However, Apple's top-down approach to design is a bust when it comes to its
approach to the software for the iPhone. Developers for that are up in arms.

People are astonishingly angry at the fact that Apple first won't let them talk
about how to develop for the iPhone - because everything about programming
for it remains under a non-disclosure agreement - and second, hasn't let them
get at its most useful application programming interfaces (APIs). Mike Ash,
a programmer at the independent Mac developer Rogue Amoeba, has posted a long
and annoyed rant about this (at bit.ly/use3) in which he says that after
a month using the new iPhone, with its new software: "I feel like I've gone
back to the dark ages." Multitasking is a thing of the past, and it's impossible
for third-party developers to design well, because Apple's keeping the best
parts of the API hidden. Apple can design something that will multitask but
others can't. The developers want in too.

Apple's constant refrain is that it's all about making sure the phone isn't
going to be destroyed by applications doing what they shouldn't. It's starting
to wear thin, though. Palm opened its platform to outside developers, which
helped it kill Psion. Apple's disdain for badly designed outside software is
hurting it more than it knows. The developers who were ready to be its friends
are turning into its enemies. And let nobody forget that Steve Ballmer's
most memorable leaping-about moment - screaming "Developers! Developers!
Developers!" - was greeted with applause. From developers. Look at how well
Microsoft
has done and compare it with the iPhone, which is teetering on a brink.

Good design is rare. But eager developers are even more rare. Let them in,
Apple.

[AI] Hackers target Google Gadgets

Hackers target Google Gadgets

LAS VEGAS (AP): One of the biggest problems with the so-called Web 2.0 movement
has been its encouragement of oversharing _ which often means underestimating
security risks. Adding doodads of varying quality to a home page can add a lot
of pizazz, but can also be fraught with danger, since they can open a door
for hackers.

It's a threat even for the biggest Web companies, including Google Inc., whose
``gadgets'' _ little programs like calendars or daily photo feeds that users
can implant onto their personalized Google home pages _ are increasingly juicy
targets for hackers, two security researchers said Wednesday.

It's not that Google is designing insecure programs.

The issue is that users building their own customized applications, and
distributing them through Google, might have evil intentions and try to exploit
those programs once they're installed on users' pages. Many users are inclined
to inherently trust what they download from Google.

Robert Hansen, chief executive of security consultant SecTheory, and Tom
Stracener, senior security analyst with security testing software maker Cenzic
Inc., demonstrated an attack Wednesday at the Black Hat hacker conference in
Las Vegas in which they used a malicious gadget to break into a person's Web
browser and read their searches in real time.

Malicious gadgets _ if a user were to download one of them _ could be used in a
variety of other attacks, including one where one gadget steals information
from another, a valuable attack against gadgets that store personal user
information, Hansen and Stracener said.

``How do you know it's a legitimate gadget?'' Hansen asked. ``Because someone
uploaded it? There's no moderation, there's no way to guarantee it won't turn
bad.''

Google isn't alone.

The company is fighting a common problem facing social-networking Web sites and
other sites that encourage users to spruce up their pages with little
knickknacks
that reach out to the outside world to deliver pictures or other content. The
applications run code on the page that can be used for good or evil.

Google disputes Hansen's characterization of its vetting process for gadgets.

The company said in a statement that it scans all gadgets regularly for
malicious code, and in the ``very rare'' instance in which one is found, it's
immediately
blacklisted.

Google added that since November 2007 no new ``inline'' gadgets _ which have
access to user account information _ have been created. And the authors of
existing ``inline'' gadgets can't modify them further.

The company defended its program and said gadgets are created by developers
from around the world and ``provide a convenient way for users to view
information
collected from around the Web in one place.''

[AI] DU library system: in line with online education

2008-08-07 Thread prateek aggarwal
Over the last few years Delhi University has been making efforts in
building a vast pool of online educational resources under the Delhi
University Library System (DULS). In the coming years too, the
university is planning to improve its online facilities by the way of
introducing library tutorials for students and teachers and making
electronic version of library books available to its students.

Elaborating on the university's plans, S Majumdar, university
librarian and head DULS, said, "DULS had started a pilot project to
digitise 3000 out of copyright books in collaboration with Centre for
Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC). Those books are already
available on the CDAC's website now. Recognising this effort
government has sanctioned us a huge grant to digitise 1000 more out of
copyright books available in the central library. These books will be
available on the library's website
www.crl.du.ac.in"

Not only this, the university will also create a tutorial for
beginners that will help students in getting basic information on the
internet, various topics and also ways to evaluate the utility of the
information available online. "Besides, students will be able to play
an Info Game that will help them find out their internet knowledge. It
will be a real learning experience for various kind of information
sources, particularly the online information sources. It will help
students know how to do research faster and better. The game has been
developed on the lines of an info game available on Austin Community
College's website. For trial basis the game of Austin Community
College (ACC) is up and running on the university's website with prior
permission of ACC," Majumdar added.

The learning tool for teachers, which the university is planning to
launch in coming years, will be slightly advanced than the one for
beginners. "It will enable teachers to search for various topics
efficiently. Also it will help them preserve their online resources
for posterity. There will be a facility of folders available to them
where they can dump their searched matter," he said.

At the time when vast pool of information is available online, DULS
has been making efforts to collate all this data and make it available
to students and teachers. "The university has spent 2.2 crores on
subscription of electronic resources. At present DULS' has access to
30 databases of the world under which students can access around 3000
journals. At present the DULS has total of 25,000 online resources in
the form of monographs, conference, proceedings and audio-visual
material," he added.

This online material is available under subscribed resources and
resources available under public domain. "It is unfortunate that our
students are still unaware of the resources they can avail of. It is
the only university in India to have such a large number of online
resources that can compete with any international university. For the
resources available in the public domain they can have access from any
part of the world. Students can avail of subscribed e-recourses
through the university's computer network. All the colleges under the
university have been connected to this network," Majumdar said
further. "Along with the journals we have collated the vast data
available on the internet on various subjects and put them in a
capsule form so that students do not need to make much effort to find
relevant material," he added.

The online data available on the library's website and on the internet
is so much that there is a need to educate users about its usage. For
this, DULS has been running information literacy and competency
programme in various colleges for postgraduate students, researchers
and college professors. "We have already conducted 10 programmes of
such kind and in the coming year we plan to conduct more. The
programme makes participants efficient in online search on the
internet in general and on university's website in particular,"
Majumdar said. Since it was difficult to conduct a programme for
undergraduate students due to a large number, the current programme
has taken care to inform teachers about it who can guide their
students.
