Re: [AI] Securing a wireless connection

2008-09-28 Thread Pranav Lal
Vikas Geetha, all,

I was afraid of this advice cropping up.
1. It is trivial to spoof a MAC id so this does not give much protection.

2. Any sniffer will give the SSID so again, disabling the SSID
broadcast does not do any good.

The key in securing a home wireless network lies in key complexity and
in the strength of the authentication and encryption protocols.

Pranav, who has his SSID broadcast turned on and has not bothered with
defining MAC addresses.

Re: [AI] Restoration of PC on an early date

2008-09-28 Thread Amiyo Biswas
Hello,

Restoring pc to an earlier state automatically uninstalls programmes
installed after that date. However, it does not delete contents of any data
file. Even the contents of the files written in the uninstalled programmes
are left intact. Try to remember if you ever changed the location of My
Documents.

Best regards,

  Allowance for dwarfs

  Special
Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: Haryana has become the first state where a new scheme, "Allowance
for Dwarfs", has been implemented as part of its social welfare initiatives,
an official spokesman said here on Thursday.

Under this scheme, Rs.300 per month is being provided to each of the four
dwarfs identified so far. A budget provision of Rs.34 lakh has been made for
this
scheme during the current financial year.

A person whose height is less than 3 feet 4 inches would qualify to be called a
dwarf. To be eligible for the allowance, a claimant would have to be a domicile
of Haryana living in the State for over one year.

Re: [AI] Securing a wireless connection

2008-09-28 Thread Vikas Kapoor
Besides that, there are two most important steps that you can take to ensure
your WiFi security. First of all, make sure that you permanently define the
media control access (MAC) address in your modem/router of those computers,
which should get access, doing so will prevent any computer to have access
even if one gets to know your password. Secondly, and perhaps the most
important one is that you can permanently disable your SSID broadcast. this
ensures that nobody can search for your WiFi network even within the range
with passive scanning. However, computers configured properly with your WiFi
modem/router will continue to have access without any hassle.

What brand of router? Also, is it a router or a dsl modem router?

Essentially, to secure your wireless connection, do the following.
1. Use a strong key and a security protocol like WPA2psk. A strong key uses
mixed case, special characters and numbers. It can be as long as is
supported by your hardware.

2. Most ports are blocked by default but have a poke around and disable
anything you do not need in the router.

3. Ensure that the firewall is enabled.

4. Ensure that the router's firmware is up-to-date.

5. Change the default password of the router.

6. Keep your computer fully patched.

7. Try and not run as administrator on your computer.

8. Set the router to use https instead of plain http.

Yes, I have a router which also doubles up as a modem. At any point of time,

I would use the connection from a maximum of three computers.

Subject: Accessible Devices Study Shows Computer Users Fail To Spot Fake
Pop-ups

To: Accessible Devices <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

With the amount of malware present on the Internet this article is
worth reading.
Study Shows Computer Users Fail To Spot Fake Pop-ups
BBC NEWS Users fail to spot fake pop-ups
Internet users are unable to distinguish between genuine pop-up
warnings messages
and false ones, a study at North Carolina State University has found.
The study examined the responses of undergraduates to messages which
popped up while
they did other tasks on a PC. Seeing the pop-ups as a mere annoyance
the majority
clicked 'OK'. Fake pop-ups are a well-known vehicle for
cyber-criminals to install
harmful software on PCs. "This study demonstrates how easy it is to
fool people on
the web," said co-author Michael Wogalter, professor of psychology at
North Carolina
State University.
"Be suspicious when things pop up. Don't click OK - close the box
instead," said

Dr. Wogalter."
Legitimate message
Participants were fooled by the fake messages 63% of the time, even
when warned that
some of what they would be seeing would be false. It suggests that the
wording on
genuine messages needs to be rethought, said Dr. Wogalter. "I don't
know if you could
develop a legitimate message that could not be duplicated and used
illegitimately,"
he said.
Tony Neate, managing director of the UK's Get Safe Online campaign advised
users
to install a pop-up blocker. "Browsers and most anti-virus software offers
them.

Pop-ups are either downloading something malicious or trying to sell
me something
so I just don't want them there at all," he said.

We've received this from a subscriber and are passing it on for your
benefit. None of us have had the opportunity as yet to try it.
We point out that this is currently in beta.
I learned of and played around with Callgrab, a new and free utility
to record skype calls. Callgrab can be downloaded from
http://callgraph.in/
It is very similar in functionality but is totally free. It can
record all kinds of skype call, pc to pc, skype-in and skype-out and
conference calls. It runs as an icon in the system tray and by
default records all skype calls automatically. This can be disabled
and recording can be started, paused and stopped from the system tray
icon, which is accessible. There also is an optional toolbar that can
be kept on top but I disabled that so that it does not get in the way
and as I also do not know if and how accessible this toolbar is. I
emailed Callgrab's support and suggested that they add keyboard
hotkeys for the above recording functions and they responded they
would put this on their to do list. The program is in beta still and
I do not know if and how fast they will implement my suggestion.
The callgrab interface itself is accessible without any scripts or
tweaking with jaws; I would assume the same for widnow eyes but have
not foundanyone to try it with win eyes yet.
Callgrab records in mp3 (default) or wave format. The bitrate for
mp3s can be adjusted and gave pretty good results when I tested it
here even though I was using a desk mic and speakers at the time.
Callgrab does not install any virtual sound devices and thus runs no
danger of interfering with software speech. And I just realized that
it worked perfectly even though I used different sound devices for
playback and recording in skype: my usb mic for recording and the my
second soundcard for playback. I need to experiment with this a bit more.

Free Software Version of the Amazability, Inc. Adept1 Assistive Technology
Product

Amazability, Inc. seeks to provide persons with visual impairment and
other

disabilities products which have the lowest cost possible and which meet
people's access needs. We have been developing the Adept1 assistive
technology product since 2002. Part of the work has been done with
support

from the United States Department of Education, as outlined at
http://www.amazability.com/about.htm, and has included the design and
implementation of a series of applications and activities intended to work
with speech. Command interaction may be done with a mix of voice
recognition and keyboard input with all activities designed to work in a
similar manner with a minimum of voice or keyboard commands needed to
carry

out complex actions. A word processor, email with address book, a web
browser, and an online library of books, reference works, and other items
are available. The Adept1 may be used for all types of programming where
software can be developed, debugged, and run by those who wish to use the
Adept1 as a talking workstation. See the Amazability, Inc. homepage
http://www.amazability.com where there is a
link to a Google Tech Talk that includes, in the latter half, a
demonstration of the Adept1.

Amazability, Inc. is preparing to offer a free software version of the
Adept1 under the terms of the GNU General Public License - GPLv3 - as
described at http://www.fsf.org/licensing/licenses/gpl.html

Amazability, Inc. plans to provide the free software version with publicly
available speech engines while at the same time making its proprietary
version, described in the Company's website, available under dual
licensing.

As the free software version is prepared for publication, we are
soliciting
volunteers who would help in building a core group of developers whose
task

would be to complete and add to the free software version. Additional
documentation to insure the successful transfer of technology and the
future

implementation of new features are near term goals. Longer term goals are
to implement portable versions of the Adept1 and to provide a port of the
technology from Linux to the Windows and Mac OS X environments.

Feasibility studies, focus group activities, and considerable beta testing
have been carried out. This has led to the design of a product that our
testers find highly useful. The Adept1 is readily learned and can serve
the

wider population of persons, whether with disabilities or not, who have
little or no technical experience. We hope that, by making the Adept1
freely available, persons with disabilities may be able to obtain an
assistive technology product that works for them.

Those interested in participating in the preparation of the free software
version and in forming a support group or who simply have questions should
contact us through email at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Subject: Accessible Devices NFB Envision America Offer
To: Accessible Devices <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

We are passing this on in case some of you are interested in taking
advantage of it. We have no additional information.

Dear NFB Members,

At this year's NFB national convention, title sponsor En-Vision
America received the NFB A+ award for its innovative product called
Scrip-Talk; a device which allows any user of prescriptions to access
the information on the prescription bottle non-visually. En-Vision
America wants to help spread the word about this technology and the
need for accessibility to our medications. We recognize "Meet the
Blind Month" is an important time for the blind community to reach
out and bring awareness to the security and equality that is
necessary for a fully independent life as a blind person. Access to
our medications is a vital step to the independence of blind and
visually impaired people and En-Vision America provides the greatest
opportunity to gain full access to this important information.

From October 1st 2008 to December 31, 2008, En-Vision America is
offering the membership of the NFB an amazing opportunity to receive
a Scrip-Talk unit free of charge. In order to receive the free unit,
a member will need to successfully sign up their local pharmacy to
implement the Scrip-Talk system. The first step is to call En-Vision
America at 1-800-890-1180 and request printed information on the
Scrip-Talk system to give to your local pharmacy. Next, members visit
their local pharmacies and inform them about Scrip-Talk and their
need for non-visual access to prescription bottle information. The
Pharmacy has a minimal purchase of $495 in order to get
started. This includes a Scrip-Talk Reader/Writer, software and
technical support along with 100 electronic tags that they will place
on your prescriptions to make them accessible. Any member that refers
their pharmacy to En-Vision America and that pharmacy purchases the
Scrip-Talk system for their blind or visually impaired customers, the
referring member will receive a Scrip-Talk unit free of charge.

Please contact En-Vision America at 1-800-890-1180 for further
details on the Scrip-Talk system. We will be happy to provide any

Re: [AI] Securing a wireless connection

2008-09-28 Thread Pranav Lal

2008-09-28 Thread bhavesh dhanak

Hi try the following:

For Mp3
www.songs.pk

www.bollyextreme.com

for other formats, which you have to later convert to mp3 format
www.apniisp.com

This I think, you have to subscribe and then can later search for a song,
not sure, just try

www.musicindiaonline.com

Hope this helps.

Subject: [AI] problem in opening a document

Dear list! due to certain unavoidable reasons, I had to format my C
Drive. since then, a very important Doc file is not opening. the message
comes, :access denied". I have copied the help option which was available
alongside the OK button. it reads:

Microsoft Office Word
Word cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges
(E:\New Folder\3.docx)
Hide Help << Open in Help Window
This message can appear if a file has been saved with
permissions. Permissions, also known as rights or privileges,
can be applied to a file, folder, or almost any resource available
from a network (printers, shares, files, databases, Web sites,
etc). When a user attempts to open a resource that requires
specific user permissions, this message will appear if the user
does not have the required permissions.
OK
could anybody of you please guide me through it? the file is very
important to me as it is the part of a research-work. I cannot delete or
move the file either.

Thanks and regards.
