Friends

Let me wish, on behalf of us all, a really hearty congratulation to our
respected moderator and my senior colleague, Mr. Harish Kotian on his
successfully attaining the rank of Assistant General Manager in The
Reserve Bank of India a few days ago.

As always, he is self effacing about it all, and so I thought it wise to
wish him collectively on his return from Rajasthan.

May he attain new heights of performance climbing fresh summits of
excellence in all endeavors, and be an inspiring lighthouse for us all.

Rajesh Asudani

like for example when Di type g it writes g itself but it pronounces
as golf, and when I press n it writes correctlyas n but only it
pronounces as november. Like this it is done with all the alphabets.

[AI] Surf web to boost brain power

Surf web to boost brain power

Miami (PTI): If you think that reading is the only way to stimulate your mind,
think again, for a new study has suggested that surfing the Internet boosts
the brain more than going through a book.

Researchers at California University have found that browsing the web triggers
centres in the brain that control decision-making and complex reasoning,
particularly in older and middle-aged adults.

In fact, the study, which looked at brain activity during web searches,
resulted in a fascinating finding: Middle -aged to older people who know their
way
around the Internet had more stimulation of decision-making and complex
reasoning areas of the brain than peers who were new to web surfing.

What's more is that reading didn't stimulate the same number of brain areas as
Internet searching. The first of its kind to access the impact of Internet
searching of brain performance, the study is to appear in an upcoming issue of
'American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry', according to the University.

"The study results are encouraging, that emerging computerised technologies may
have physiological effects and potential benefits for middle-aged and older
adults.

"Internet searching engages complicated brain activity, which may help exercise
and improve brain function," said lead researcher Dr Gary Small of the
University's
Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behaviour.

He added: "A simple, everyday task like searching the web appears to enhance
brain circuity in older adults, demonstrating that our brains are sensitive
and can continue to learn as we grow older."

For the study, the California University team worked with 24 neurologically
normal research volunteers between the ages of 55 and 76.

Half of the participants had experience searching the net, while the other half
had no experience.

The study participants performed web searches and book-reading tasks while
undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans, which recorded
the subtle brain-circuity changes experience during these activities.

All the participants showed significant brain activity during the book-reading
tasks, demonstrating use of the regions controlling language, reading, memory
and visual abilities, which are located in the temporal, parietal, occipital
and other areas of the brain.

Internet searches revealed a major difference between the two groups. While all
participants demonstrated the same brain activity that was seen during the
book-reading task, the web-savvy group also registered activity in the frontal,
temporal and cingulate areas of the brain, which control decision-making
and complex reasoning.

"Our most striking finding was that Internet searching appears to engage a
greater extent of neural circuity that is not activated during reading -- but
only in those with prior Internet experience," said Small.

In fact, the researchers found that during web searching, the volunteers with
prior experience registered a two-fold increase in brain activation when
compared
with those with little Internet experience.

They also discovered that during Internet searching those, with prior
experience sparked 21,782 voxels, compared with only 8,646 voxels for those
with less
experience.

[AI] Now, a spy software to identify online paedophiles

2008-10-19 Thread Renuka Warrier
The Hindu News Update Service

News Update Service
Sunday, October 19, 2008 : 1520 Hrs

Sci. & Tech.
Now, a spy software to identify online paedophiles

London (PTI): Scientists are developing a spy software, which they claim could
help identify paedophiles who masquerade as children on the Internet.

According to them, the technology analyses language and syntax used online to
tell if an adult is pretending as a kid, and is also able to keep track of
secret code words used by paedophiles as file names for child pornography.

"The main technique is something called authorship attribution. Research has
been done, which indicates that there are differences in how people of a
particular
age group write. You can distinguish when someone is 25 when they are claiming
to be 14, for example.

"The project uses a lot of artificial intelligence and a lot of algorithms. We
are using language analysis tools to identify someone who is masquerading
as a child, and therefore identify people who may be a risk to children.

"We are looking at being able to monitor traffic in file-sharing networks to
try to identify core distributors, who are of interest to law enforcement
agencies
because they have access to children and are preparing photographs of these
children in abusive situations.

"Paedophiles use very specific ways of marking these files and searching for
them. To the untrained eye they can look like innocent searches but with our
analysis you can isolate them and study how they change," lead scientist Awais
Rashid of Lancaster University told The Sunday Telegraph.

A first prototype system has already being devised and is being tested on
non-sensitive data. And, according to the scientists, the next stage of the
three-year
project, titled Project Isis, would be to use the software programme on
real-life paedophile material provided by police and other law enforcement
agencies.

Subject: [AI] creating groups in the address book

Hi friends, hope you will be doing great.

I was wondering, wither we can create groups in the address book in
outlook express?

Suppose we have some friends to whom we send mails regularly, and if we
could make a group of all that friends, so that we don't have to type all
of their addresses, each time when we want to send them a same mail,
instead, we could write the groups name or anything like that.

Awaiting your precious replies and thanking you in anticipation.

[AI] Scheme for the physically challenged

2008-10-19 Thread Renuka Warrier
Hi friends,

Does anyone know any state in which this scheme has been successfully
implimented?

Renuka.

Date:20/10/2008 URL:
http://www.thehindu.com/2008/10/20/stories/2008102054270500.htm

Kerala -
Thiruvananthapuram

Scheme for the physically challenged

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State government has notified a Central scheme seeking
to provide incentives to the private sector units that provide employment
to physically challenged persons.

The Central scheme, announced in April this year, envisages creation of
one-lakh jobs per annum under the scheme, with a total outlay of Rs.1,800 crore
for the Eleventh Five Year Plan. The scheme is yet to take off in a big way
owing to the lack of awareness about the incentives given under the scheme.

According to official sources, the scheme would be applicable to physically
challenged employees covered under the Persons with Disabilities (Equal
Opportunities,
Protection of Rights and Full participation) Act 1995 and the National Trust
for Welfare of Persons with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and
Multiple Disabilities Act, 1999, and working in the private sector on enrolment
in the Employees Provident Fund and Employees State Insurance under the
EPF and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952. The scheme would be available for
employees with disability appointed on or after April 1, 2008, and earning
a monthly wage up to Rs.25,000.

Under the scheme, the Centre will directly provide the employer's contribution
to the Provident Fund scheme of the employee for a period of three years.
The Centre has already amended the relevant provisions of the Employees
Provident Fund Scheme and the Employees Pension Scheme and the Employees State
Insurance Act, 1948. The Employees Provident Fund Organisation and the
Employees State Insurance Corporation have been given Rs.5 crore each, made
available
by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment by way of advance. The
amounts would be used to reimburse individual claims received from employers.

The Centre, while urging States to ensure the implementation of the scheme in
their respective domains, has also set up a high-level monitoring .

Re: [AI] how to move the matter in the right in Ms word? and howtohigh light something by bullet sign?

2008-10-19 Thread Pamnani

Amar and others,
If you want to move an address to the right please do not right align. That
is totally wrong. If you right align then you will touch the right hand side
margin and the left edges will be jagged. Let me explain:

My home address is
24 Blue haven
Mount Pleasant Road

What you need in the same line is "2" and "M" you do not need "N" and "D" in
the same line.
If you right align then "n" and "d" will come one below the other and will
be touching the right margin. "2" and "M" will start at different places.
To get "2" and "M" one below the other at the same point you have to first
type them out on differnt lines by hitting the enter button after 24 Blue
Haven. At this stage there will be no margin so the words will be flushed
left.
Then highlight both the lines. Go to the format menu and then to paragraphs
after that to Indents and spacing and then put in a value like 2.8 in the
box for left indent. this will move the whole thing to the right by 2.8.
You will then have "2" and "M" starting at the same point and ending at
different points but all on the right hand side of the paper.

Why 2.8?
this is because A4 size paper is 8.5 width and we leave a margin of about
1.6 on the left and 1.25 on the right which leaves about little less than 6
inches to work on so actuallly half way would be somewhere around 2.82 I
leave a little less since the margin on the left is a little more to make it
look nearly half way and therefore equal.
If you have a shorter address per line then you can move it more towards the
right by keeping a higher indent on the left.

If you dont understand what I have tried to explain then call me personally
Never use the Tab button it is the shabbiest way to do this.
Sometimes it is easier to use a table and put in 2 colums with one row.
do not type in the first column but only in the second column and keep using
the enter button between the lines. Needless to say you must hide gridlines
before sending or printing.

Both the ways I have suggested will ensure that it is absolutely accurate
without sighted assistance and you wont have a problem in case the paper or
margin size changes.

Since a lot of us havent seen since birht it is best to understand these
concepts by letting people explain this on the palm. I know that some
trainers do this by using clay.

Once again do not use tabs or the space bar.

Hello,

You can right-align a paragraph using ctrl+r. It will shift all lines in a
paragraph to the right margin. As for text spread over two or three lines,
you may prefer using the tab key to start each line at a certain point.
Each tab key will announce the amount of space it shifts.

As regards bulleted list, use ctrl+shift+l.

For other styles like numbered list, etc., you can use the style submenu
under format menu.

If things are messed up, use ctrl+shift+n to return to normal format.

Best regards,
Amiyo Biswas.

Respected Accessindians,
Please help me in learning Ms word.

1. If we have to move something in the right, then how should we do it?

Suppose I am writing a letter. Now, if I have to move my address in
the right then what should I do for it?

2. High lighting a point with bullet sign or creating a list of points?

Suppose there is a main heading "Functions" and I have to high light 5
points given below this heading exactly like the bulleted list which
we see on the websites then how do we do it in Ms word?

I have given examples to express my questions perfectly.
Expecting your help in this regard.
Regards,
Amar Jain.
