Interesting read
Brain has subconscious visual sense
24 Dec 2008, 0013 hrs IST, Benedict Carey, NYT News Service
The man, a doctor left blind by two successive strokes, refused to take part in
the experiment. He could not see anything, he said, and had no interest in
navigating an obstacle course - a cluttered
hallway - for the benefit of science. Why bother?
When he finally tried it, though, something remarkable happened. He zigzagged
down the hall, sidestepping a garbage can, a tripod, a stack of paper and
several boxes as if he could see everything
clearly.
"You just had to see it to believe it," said Beatrice de Gelder, a
neuroscientist at Harvard and Tilburg University in the Netherlands, who with
an international team of brain researchers reported on
the patient in the journal Current Biology.
The study, which included extensive brain imaging, is the most dramatic
demonstration to date of so-called blindsight, the native ability to sense
things using the brain's primitive, subcortical - and
entirely subconscious - visual system.
Experts have previously reported cases of blindsight in people with partial
damage to their visual lobes. The new report is the first to show it in a
person whose visual lobes - one in each hemisphere,
under the skull at the back of the head - were completely destroyed. The
finding suggests that people with similar injuries may be able to recover some
crude visual sense with practice.
"It's a very rigorously done report and the first demonstration of this in
someone with apparent total absence of a striate cortex, the visual processing
region," said Richard Held, an emeritus
professor of cognitive and brain science at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, who with Ernst Poppel and Douglas Frost wrote the first published
account of blindsight in a person, in 1973.
Scientists have long known that the brain digests what comes through the eyes
using two sets of circuits. Cells in the retina project not only to the visual
cortex but also to subcortical areas.
In an earlier experiment, researchers also found that the same African doctor
had emotional blindsight. When presented with images of fearful faces, he
cringed subconsciously in the same way that
almost everyone does, even though he could not consciously see the faces. The
subcortical, primitive visual system apparently registers not only solid
objects but also strong social signals.

Hello,

I don't understand how a person can see something when the necessary part of
his brain is damaged. I can imagine smelling sweet flowers, dream of seeing
somebody I love, but I don't think, I can ever see anything by just
practice. It seems to me just another instance of parascience or

the cheapest screen magnifier, is that of a free operating system such as:
ubuntu: it costs: 0 dollars.
when it comes to talking about the windows operating system, it is worth
mentioning microsoft's screen magnifier shipped with the windows CD, under the
accessibility menu, included in the program accessories in the default
customization for windows 2000 and above installations including windows XP and
windows vista.
other common third party commercial screen magnifiers include:
magic, by freedomscientific.
luner: by dolphin access systems.

[AI] Merry Christmas

2008-12-24 Thread ruchir falodiya
--
A different christmas poem!

The embers glowed softly,
and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room,
 and I cherished the sight.

My wife was asleep,
Her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me,
Angelic in rest.

Outside the snow fell,
A blanket of white,
Transforming the yard,
into a winter delight.

The sparkling lights,
in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic,
that was Christmas Eve.

My eyelids were heavy,
My breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded,
by love I would sleep.

In perfect contentment,
or so it would seem,
So I slumbered,
perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud,
And it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes,
When it tickled my ear.

Perhaps just a cough,
I didn't quite know,
Then the sure sound of footsteps,
outside in the snow.

My soul gave a tremble,
I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door,
just to see who was near.

Standing out in the cold,
and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood,
His face weary and tight.

A soldier, I puzzled,
some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine,
huddled here in the cold.

Alone in the dark,
He looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me,
And my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?"
I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment,
It's freezing out here!

Put down your pack,
brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home,
On a cold Christmas Eve!"

For barely a moment,
I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold,
and the snow Blown in drifts.

To the window That danced with a warm fire's light,
Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right.
I'm out here by choice, I'm here every night."

"It's my duty,
to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you,
>From the darkest of times.

No one had to ask,
beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here,
like my fathers before me.

My Gramps died at ' Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."

My dad stood his watch,
in the jungles of Nam,
And now it is my turn,
and so, here I am.

I've not seen my own son,
in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures,
he's sure got her smile.

Then he bent,
and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue,
an American flag.

I can live through the cold,
and the being alone,
Away from my family,
My house and my home.

I can stand at my post,
through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole,
With little to eat.

I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother,
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."

"So go back inside,"
he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting,
and I'll be all right."

"But isn't there something I can do At the least,
"Give you money,"
I asked, "or prepare you a feast?

It seems all too little,
for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife,
and your sweet little son."

Then his eye welled a tear,
that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us,
And never forget.

To fight for our rights,
back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch,
No matter how long.

For when we come home,
Either standing or dead,
To know you remember,
we fought and we bled.

that Is payment enough,
And with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you,
as you mattered to us."

Merry Christmas and a very happy new year to all :)

Subject: [AI] Chequebooks to the VI customers

Dear Kanchan Pamnani & other list members,

One VI person Shri Subhash has approached to know that the visually
impaired Bank customer, who can not even sign consistantly, can be issued
chequebook for specific purpose, e.g. for raising housing loan from NFB?

In this connection, please apprise anyone else regarding latest
development after CCPD judgement in 2005, so that matter could be
discussed with higher authorities accordingly. If anyone has any
guidelines, e.g. IBA/RBI guidelines, I may please be forwarded as
attachment on my personal email ID for further course of action in this
regard.

Thanks in anticipation.

Re: [AI] about Sangeeta-enu.exe

2008-12-24 Thread Amiyo Biswas

Hello,

First press ctrl+s to activate "Select a synthesiser" dialogue box, arrow
down to Sapi 5 and press enter to activate it.

Now go to Jaws Opbtions menu, Voices submenu and Global Adjustment. Select
Default options, tab over to the pc cursor voice control. It is a combo box
where you have to select ScanSoft Sangeeta_Full_11kDefault (or 22kDefault)
for voice. Then tab over to the Ok button.

At first the whole process semed difficult to me, particularly the last
combo box. If you want it to be the default synthesiser for jaws, you will
have to go to Jaws configuration manager by pressing insert+f2. Then press
ctrl+shift+d for the default configuration file. Activate the Set options
menu, Synthesiser submenu. It will open a dialogue box where the first
control is a combo again where you have to select Sapi 5. Tab over to the Ok
button and press enter on it. Press ctrl+s to save the changes.

Hope, this helps.

Best regards,
Amiyo Biswas.
