[AI] Gene therapy cures red-green colour blindness in adult monkeys
The Hindu : Health : Gene therapy cures red-green colour blindness in adult monkeys CHENNAI, September 17, 2009 R. PRASAD The number on the demo plate (left) can be identified even by the colour-blind. The number on the test plate can be read only by a normal person. Photo: Special Arrangement Special ArrangementThe number on the demo plate (left) can be identified even by the colour-blind. The number on the test plate can be read only by a normal person. Photo: Special Arrangement There is hope for millions of people who are unable to see or have trouble seeing red and green colours. Red-green colour blindness is the most common colour-vision disorder. It mostly affects males as it is a gene defect that is carried in the X chromosome. In India about 13 million people suffer from red-green colour blindness. It is 16 million in the case of China. While normal people can perceive hues of blue, yellow, green and red, those with red-green colour deficiencies can see only hues of blue and yellow. Scientists from the University of Washington, University of Florida and the Medical College of Wisconsin have been able to cure red-green colour blindness in adult monkeys that are born blind to these two colours by resorting to gene therapy. "Treated monkeys unquestionably respond to colours that were previously invisible to them," they write. Their experiments were on squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus). Their work is published online in the journal Nature. Correction possible on adults What makes the study particularly important is the fact that researchers used adult monkeys for the experiment. According to the authors, their work has disproved the long held notion that colour blindness cannot be corrected in adults. They have also debunked the notion that neural connections are established during development when a child is very young, and any corrections done later will be of little use as the neural connections are not present. Ability to seen red-green "can arise from single gene addition of a third cone class and it does not require an early development process," they note. "This proves a positive outlook for the potential of gene therapy to cure adult vision disorders." It took nearly five months for the treated monkeys' threshold to perceive blue-green and red-violet improved. Based on the improvement, the authors stress that "some form of inherent plasticity" in the monkeys' visual system was present which enabled the adult ones to acquire the new colour vision. Taking advantage of pre-existing neural circuitry "These experiments demonstrate that a new colour-vision capacity, as defined by new discrimination abilities, can be added by taking advantage of pre-existing neural circuitry," they note. The experiment shows that restoring full vision could have happened in the absence of any other change in the visual system except the addition of a third cone type using gene therapy. It may be possible in the future to cure red-green colour blindness in people using gene therapy provided all photoreceptors are intact and healthy. The age when such a correction is done may not be an issue, as this experiment shows. According to them, the new colour vision acquisition does not necessarily mean that any rewiring of the neural circuitry has taken place. Though the monkeys certainly responded to colours that were previously invisible to them, the researchers are not sure if the monkeys experienced any new internal sensations to red and green. Re: [AI] information needed for demate
Dear Sir, We both are traveling in the same boat. Firstly, in which bank you have your bank account? Because, you should open your demat account with the same bank. The point which needs to be noted is, most of the banks are opening account with cdsl and not with nsdl. The instructions for opening our account with cdsl is explained in dp operating instructions point no. 2.5. For instructions, contact your nearest DP since they only possess the copy of dp instructions. You can also send your problems to: invest...@cdslindia.com Points need to be taken care while filling up the form: 1. All the thumb impressions on Demat account form, are need to be verified by the branch manager. In the case of State bank of India it is 9 thumb impressions. So, on 9 thumb impressions, the stamp sign and the code of branch manager needs to be put. All the thumb impressions need to be done in front of branch manager. Then only he will verify. Note: the stamp of the branch manager should not contain any disclaimor which says "We are not lible for unauthorize use of something", because if it contains any such, your form will be rejected. 2. All zeroxed documents must contain your thumb impression on each, with the verification of branch manager. All will same. Stamp, sign and branch manager code. 3. A statement should be there which says that complete form has been red in front of you, with the verification of branch manager and should be signed by two witnesses. This is the requirement of DPCPC and not of CDSL but it needs to be done. So where that statement should be or actually where it is for that contact your DP. Because this is today's rejection so tomorrow I am going to find it out that where it should be written. So cant be precise about this part. I only know the process of thumb impression since I do that only. These much rejections I have got uptill now, so only this much I will be able to tell you!!! The procedure is dam lengthy, so be patient and your DP should be co-operative then you can proceed further even with rejections! Prayers from my heart, that you never get rejections due to lack of awareness of guidelines on the part of DPCPC. Now talking about trading form: First your demat account should be opened then only trading account... All thumb impressions on trading form needs to be notrised. The agreements included in the form should also be notrised. In the case of notry here, they will put a stamp and sign on all the thumb impression, and at the last page last thumb of form, they put some red ceal or something... or perhaps some red stamp. But every agreement needs to be notrized. The superb part of this process, in the case of Motilal Oswal trading form there are 39 thumb impressions. Below 30 or 34 thumb impressions I have never seen any form. So just think of some good source who can get it notrized or get ready to pay good amount to notry people. I know this much only. My best wishes. I am not trying to make you afraid, but just explaining you all the difficulties which are coming in my path. Hope it helps, Amar Jain. - Original Message - From: "jignesh thakur" To: "accessindia" Sent: Thursday, September 17, 2009 11:57 PM Subject: [AI] information needed for demate Hi all, I want to open demate account for online trading. Or else you need to do the folowing aditional tasks. Firstly DSL modems comes with different combinations. Wireless and wired. If your modem has wireless, then you can use it straight out of the box as most laptops are WI FI enabled. IF it is wired and having multiple ports, then you need not disconnect it from your desktop and you can merely connect it to the free port on your modem. In this case your IP should be different than that of your desktop. May be one 1 up eg. if your desktop's ip is 192.168.1.30 you can set your laptop to be 192.168.1.31 To configure the lan connection you need to do the following: 1 go to start menu, acessories, communications, network connection 2 Select lan and go to its properties 3 Select internet protocol, TCPIP and again go to its properties 4 do these steps both on your desktop and laptop 5 use your jaws cursor to read the values from the desktop and replicate the same at your laptopp. Note: Set your laptop ip different than at your desktop as mentioned above. Besides, address constitutes block of 4 blocks each consisting of 3 digits. When the block gets filled up it will automatically jump to the next block. However if that block is supposed to contain less than 3 digit, you will have to put a dot to jump to the next block. HTH Harish Kotian - Original Message - From: "Rohiet A. Hi Subramani I think you are trying to fit it into the modem jack, where the phone line is supposed to go. Look out for another port which fits it correctly. Are you sure, your laptop has a network port? Some don't. well just to have correct info, BPA Amdabad was erliar called BMA blind men's association. it was named BPA about 20 years ago!!. At 01:21 PM 9/17/2009, you wrote: Hello, Ok, I maintain the site for BPA of Kolkata and I put this information on the site. I am associated with the organisation from my college days. However, I would like my friends in Ahmedabad to check if Professor Sengupta really founded Blind People's Association of Ahmedabad. He was, as far as I know, the first matriculate, first graduate and the first professor among the sightless people in India. He lived from 1900 to 1957. Best regards, Amiyo Biswas. Cell: 91-9433464329 - Original Message - From: "Vishnu Ramchandani" To: Sent: Wednesday, September 16, 2009 1:31 PM Subject: [AI] BPA fest showcases students' talent Ahmedabad: Exiled from the world of light and colour, and looked down upon by general society, the blind people of our country went begging from door to door, singing doleful songs in medieval India. On the other hand, a revolutionary change had taken place in Europe in the world of education of the blind. Louis Braille of France, himself blind, invented a tactile code for reading and writing of the sightless, which came to be named after him. In this background, Blind People's Association (BPA) was established on December 5, 1946 by a handful of educated and conscious blind youth under the presidency of the late Nagendranath Sengupta, professor of Bangabasi College, to promote self-confidence and self-dependence among their fellow brothers and sisters. The association is the only one of its kind in India since it is an organisation completely of, for, and by the blind. The BPA on Monday organised its annual function at Town Hall, to celebrate the talents of the differently abled. More than 500 students, teachers and staff of the BPA were present at the event, which was held in honour of the 'All India Flag Day for the Blind', celebrated on September 14th every year. Upendrabhai Shah of Shah Investors Home Ltd was the chief guest. Blind and disabled students and trainees from the BPA schools, workshops, vocational training and day care centres presented dances, songs and fashion shows at the programme. "The BPA has been organising such activities for years. Our students can dance, sing, draw and do almost every thing that you and I can do," said Bhushan Punani, director, BPA (Ahmedabad). The programme also included events like folk and western dance, mimicry, raas garba, skits and a puppet show with children showcasing their own unique talents. "We have many students who cannot listen to music, but can feel the vibrations and that itself makes them very happy," said Nandini Raval, project coordinator. The BPA is striving to increase the frequency of activities to provide the children with a healthy yet competitive environment to work and enjoy. "The BPA's success bears testimony to the fact that a noble goal can be achieved with small means if the workers are motivated with selfless dedication and genuine love for the cause,"said Shelly Bapna, an official at the BPA. Re: [AI] BPA fest showcases students' talent
Hello, Ok, I maintain the site for BPA of Kolkata and I put this information on the site. I am associated with the organisation from my college days. I three of Professor Sen's children and collected materials on him in 1996 when we celebrated its fiftieth year. Professor Sengupta founded Blind Persons' Association in Kolkata and I have verified it with Sadhan Gupta, noted advocate and former MP. Dear Friends, Several years ago, the Maharashtra Government had issued a notification granting exemption to the disabled from payment of road tax for cars owned by them for personal (non-commercial) use. 195 pound sterling means Rs 15,000 rupees is it? Subramani -Original Message- From: accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Kiran Kaja Sent: Thursday, September 17, 2009 1:03 AM To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Subject: Re: [AI] Talking Microwave Oven - finally in my home!! I shouldn't be commenting on this without reading Prashant's blog post but I considered getting a talking microwave. Cobolt Systems here in the UK sells a particular type of LG microwave which has complete talking functionality with lots of nice features. I believe it can even tell you the weight of the food you put in the microwave. But it costs 195 pounds. On reflection, I also realised that I use microwave primarily for warming or heating frozen food and I don't need all the other features. So, I found a Cookworks basic microwave for 27 pounds. This thing has no display screen. It just has two nobs, one for adjusting the power (temperature) and the other is a timer. These are apparently called manual microwaves... I survived with this 27 pound manual microwave for 4 months before my sighted wife joined me in the UK. I might end up buying a full featured talking microwave in the near future. But I wanted to highlight the fact that there are also these cheaper alternatives. I was amazed at the wide range of microwaveable ready to eat food that is out there in the market. There are even idlis, dosas and rotis that can be cooked using a simple microwave. And I don't want to hear any lectures on healthy eating please. I had enough of those from my wife... Mobility is an essential part of everyone's life. it becomes difficult for us as visually impaired and more important than ever before. but, do we give ourselves the opportunity to experience it? most of us shy away from using the white cane that is specifically meant to serve the purpose of replacing the missing sight, if used with the right techniques. i have been one to never be able to use the cane for various reasons. firstly having been sighted, i am well aware of the perils of being out on our roads, and the vanity factor has always come in the way. having gone on all these years in this way, i reached a stage where i felt the strings holding me down. unavailability of assistance when required and the urgency to have things done put an abrupt end to all these factors. i decided to go on and equip myself with this essential skill and made a trip to Mitra Jyothi in Bangalore for a 5 day programme in Outdoor mobility. this was customised to suit my need and the time i had available on hand. it was an experience i will never forget. from the word go, my instructor, Ms Sundari nudged me on gently but firmly onto moving on my own. the inputs were positive and not assertive which makes the likes of us that are skeptical about it, accept it with more ease.holding the cane and moving with it was something else. the encouragement and constant support made me move on quicker. tentative steps became more confident and small ones became strides. the feeling was liberating and exhilerating. i had never thoughht i would feel that way. gone was the fear and hesitation and it was replaced with a new self confidence. this did not last only for the time when my instructor was with me, but also through the journey on my own onto the busy road wit traffic on one side and the inevitable open drains on the other. made me wonder why had i not done this before. a lot of us have opportunities that come our way but hesitate to take them on only because we are not sure of how to get there. i endorse once again the best way is to find the right persons to assist you and pick the white cane to make it a friend and not something to keep away so far away that you don't see it and so don't need to use it, exactly as i had done. the feeling at the end of it all is well worth everything!
