It used to be just mobile speak for windows based mobiles, but I believe that
talks is either compatible with windows mobile or it is going to be made

not be compatible with all the versions of windows mobile. And they are anyway
costly here in the Us.

[AI] About Jaws

2009-11-15 Thread Robin Augastin
hello friends

About Jaws
•What is JAWS?

JAWS stands for Job Access for Windows and Speech. It is a screen
reader program created by Freedom Scientific, which allows people who
are blind to gain access to information on their computers.

•How do JAWS users access the information on their computers?

JAWS provides access in two different ways: speech and Braille. JAWS
uses an internal speech software program called Eloquence, along with
the computer's sound card. JAWS also provides support for refreshable
Braille displays and additional speech software options such as the
ATT natural voices.

•How many different versions of JAWS are available with each release?

Two. The standard version is for use with Windows XP Home/ME/98. The
professional version supports Windows XP Professional, Home, and Media
Center Editions/2000/ME/98.

•How much does JAWS cost?

The standard version costs $895. The professional version costs
$1,095. If you purchase a software maintenance agreement (SMA), it
could save you money; purchasing them separately from the version of
JAWS you want will cost you $50 more than if you purchase the SMA at
the same time as your JAWS software.

•How might a Freedom Scientific Software Maintenance Agreement (SMA) benefit me?

If you purchase the SMA, you are eligible for two consecutive software
upgrades to JAWS on CD-ROM, or you can download the upgrades from the
Freedom Scientific website. Having the SMA could save you up to 50%.
only U.S. customers can purchase the SMA.

Getting Started with JAWS
•I am blind. Can I install JAWS on my computer without sighted assistance?

Yes. The JAWS CD-ROM comes with its own built-in speech engine,
allowing someone without sight to easily install JAWS on their
computer by following the voiced instructions.

•Can I use standard Windows commands with JAWS?

Yes. Examples of standard Windows keys would include:

-- Left Arrow/right arrow: Moves the cursor left or right one
character; JAWS speaks that character.
-- Shift+Left or Right Arrow: selects that character. JAWS says that
character, along with the word selected.
-- Alt+F4: closes a window.
-- Ctrl+o: opens a file.

•What training materials are available for JAWS?

JAWS provides a variety of different training materials to help people
learn how to use JAWS. First, JAWS comes with a cassette tape that
helps novice JAWS users install the software on their computer.

With JAWS Version 8, training materials are available in DAISY format.
The demo version of FS-Reader automatically comes with JAWS version 8.
With FS-Reader, new JAWS users can listen as people from Freedom
Scientific demonstrate how to navigate their computer screen with
JAWS. They can also read along in Braille what the Freedom Scientific
trainers say. It is just like listening to cassettes in previous
versions of JAWS, only you may read along as well.

Finally, the Online Help Topics as well as application-specific help
is still available for those who wish to read detailed documentation
and explore JAWS keystrokes on their own.

•Is there a way to search Help Topics for a specific topic?

Yes. Follow these steps:

1. Open JAWS Help Topics by pressing F1 when the JAWS window has focus.
2. Press Alt+s to search.
3. Type the word you want to search for in the edit field.
4. Tab once to List Topics.
5. Tab once to hear your search results. You will generally see a
variety of results.
6. Press F6 on the topic you want to read about.

•How do I access the DAISY training materials in JAWS?

Go into JAWS Help, select training materials, scroll through the list
of topics and press F6. A read-only window then opens and you are
automatically in FS-Reader.

•Is FS-Reader easy to use?

Yes. Here are some commands for navigating through these documents in
FS-Reader by listening:

-- Play/Pause: Ctrl+p
-- Stop: Ctrl+s
-- Rewind: Comma
-- Fast Forward: Period
-- Increase Rate of Speed: Ctrl+Page Up
-- Decrease Rate of Speed: Ctrl+Page Down
-- Switch to Normal Speed: Ctrl+Shift+n

•How do I exit JAWS?

With your window focus on JAWS, press Alt+F4; then press Enter to exit
JAWS. You can also go into the JAWS Options menu by pressing the Alt
key, pressing your Down-Arrow key once until you hear JAWS say
Basics and select Exit by pressing your Up- or Down-arrow key until
you hear that option and then press Enter.

•How do I restart JAWS?

Press Insert+ctrl+j, or press Windows Logo Key+r, type jaws8 without
the quotes, and press Enter.

•What is the Options Menu?

The Options Menu contains all of your basic settings, located in
submenus, that you need to get started using JAWS. You will find four
submenus: Basics, Voices, Braille and Exit. Press Enter to access the
changes you can make; press the Spacebar to check or uncheck the boxes
that allow you to make changes to your settings.

In the Basics Menu the first option allows you to control how much
information JAWS says regarding how to get access to help. This is
known as a

Access with Braille
•What are refreshable Braille displays?

Braille displays are usually rectangular in shape with pins that move
up and down that form letters of the Braille cells. When used in
conjunction with a screen reader, they provide a tactile Braille
representation of what JAWS speech synthesis says and what's showing
on the monitor.

Braille displays usually have a row of buttons on the panel above the
Braille cells that move the cursor to a chosen position when pressed,
to edit a spelling mistake, for example, or to click on a link in
Internet Explorer. These are called cursor routing buttons.

In addition to the cursor routing buttons, Braille displays often have
advance buttons, whiz wheels or rocker switches that allow the user to
move a line up or down in reading or skim a few lines at a time.

•How is using a refreshable Braille display different than using speech in JAWS?

If you use speech-only in JAWS, you will use hotkeys to perform tasks
such as saving a file. If you use a Braille display, you will become
familiar with how the screen is laid out so that you can easily scroll
to menu options. You can then use a cursor routing button to click on,
for example, a Web link or a letter in a misspelled word you want to
edit, instead of using the keyboard to perform these functions. Most
people who use a Braille display use a combination of cursor routing
buttons and hotkeys.

If you use a Braille display, you will notice rather quickly that
certain abbreviations are used; list views (lv), symbols (sb), scroll
buttons (scrup/dn) and links (lnk) in order to conserve space on the
Braille display. Additionally, links are usually underlined with dots
7 and 8. You can adjust how many of these abbreviations you see in the
JAWS Verbosity menu (Insert+V) or in the Configuration Manager.

•What are the different choices presented to me in the Braille submenu?

There is a default Braille display setting, which allows you to tell
JAWS which Braille display you are using. JAWS supports a wide variety
of Braille displays.

The Show Braille load error checkbox is next. By default, the
checkbox is not checked, so your Braille display will start when JAWS
starts.

The next option in the Braille menu is the Translation table. This
setting is best left at its default. It shows how Braille characters
are viewed on the Braille display.

Add Braille Display option is next. If you purchase a Braille display
and want JAWS to recognize it, you must select this option.

The final option in this menu is the Advanced Braille Display Settings button.

•What are the options in the Advanced Braille Display Settings?

The first option is Grade Two Enable Translator. If this is turned
on, you will read contracted Braille with your Braille display.

The next option is Grade Two Expand Current Word, and when this
option is checked, the word your cursor is located on will be in
uncontracted Braille. This makes it easier to find your cursor when
editing documents, although some people may wish to have it turned off
to save space on their Braille display.

The third option is Grade Two Suppress Capital Signs. This option is
very useful if you are working with a small Braille display and you
don't have eight-dot mode running. Not viewing the extra dot 6's gives
the Braille reader extra characters.

Access with Speech or Audio Cues
•What does the Voices Menu in Basic Settings allow you to do?

The Voices submenu allows you to change the rate JAWS speaks. You can
change individual settings so that if, for example, you open Word,
JAWS will speak more slowly just for that program. If you change the
global settings, JAWS will speak faster or slower universally.

Spelling Rate Increment (Insert+numpad 5) will spell the selected word
slower than the current rate of JAWS. You can change the spelling rate
with this option.

Pitch Increment is an edit box that allows you to change the pitch of
the voice you are using. Voice pitch changes can occur for many
different reasons, depending on your settings in the Sounds and
Schemes Manager. Please see the question on the Sounds and Schemes
Manager for more information.

•Can I make the rate of speech faster or slower depending on which
application I am using?

Yes. This is called application-specific speech. Let us say that if
you are using Internet Explorer, you want to make the rate of speech
faster, so that you can quickly browse websites. On the other hand,
you need to carefully read documents in Microsoft Word. Here is how
you would increase the rate of speech for Internet Explorer:

1. Open Internet Explorer or, if you already have it open, press
Alt+Tab until you find Internet Explorer.
2. Then press Alt+Tab until you reach JAWS.
3. Go to the Voice Settings in the Options Menu in JAWS.
4. A dialog box with two radio buttons will open. Arrow down once
until you hear application.
5. Tab until you hear voice rate and then press Down Arrow to

[AI] Hardware Trojans could turn microchips into timebombs

2009-11-15 Thread Sanjay

Please do not ask for source. As I myself don't know and do not bother about
it, how can I give you the source? I receive most of these mails from one of
my tech savvy colleagues. As he forwards/sends me in the form of attachments,
I have to open and read then copy and paste to this list. I hope those who ask
for source will understand this. If I know the source, I will surely mention
it.

'Hardware Trojans' could turn microchips into timebombs
Firewalls and anti-virus software will be useless against to a new
generation of attacks that target the very fabric of microchips

by Paul Marks

MICROCHIPS are vulnerable to a host of attacks during their
manufacture that could quietly render them useless shortly after being
put to use in crucial applications. The possibility is raising fears
that critical systems such as air traffic control, power grids and
military systems could be hacked more easily than had been thought.

Last week, engineers from Case Western Reserve University in
Cleveland, Ohio, and the electronics firm Rockwell Automation of
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, revealed how microchips could be effectively
turned into time bombs in two papers published on the physics preprint
server (arXiv:0906.3832 and 0906.3834). There is currently no way to
test for chips adulterated in this way, says electronics engineer
Frank Wolff of the Case Western team, although he and others are
exploring detection techniques (see Tripping up trojans).

Another kind of chip doctoring is exercising the minds of engineers at
the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
In 2005, a report from the Defense Science Board, an advisory
committee for the US military, warned that the inexorable migration of
silicon chip manufacturing from the US to countries employing cheaper
labour meant the US was no longer in complete control of the
technology it relies upon.

How would anyone know, the board asked, if a chip-industry engineer in
Taiwan, Singapore or China, say, had introduced a malicious circuit -
a remotely controllable kill switch, for example - in a chip
containing many millions of transistors?
How would anyone know if a malicious, remotely controlled circuit had
been introduced into a chip?

As a result of that report, DARPA, based in Arlington, Virginia,
established a research programme called Trust in Integrated Circuits.
Its research, carried out largely in secret, is to work out how memory
chips, logic circuit designs and the like can be adulterated - and how
to detect those that have been.

To sabotage a chip, a culprit would have to be an expert chip designer
with access to the computer-aided design systems containing a chip's
blueprints. The latest fear, however, is that it's not only designs
that can be sabotaged - the manufacturing process itself is also
vulnerable.

The Case Western and Rockwell team says there are four ways in which
the properties of semiconductors might allow hidden defects - which
they call hardware trojans - to be introduced into microchips. They
are all based on the mechanisms that eventually cause chips to wear
out naturally some time after their 10-year guaranteed lifetime. The
mechanism that most concerns them is called hot carrier
injection (HCI) because it works by gradually - but undetectably -
degrading the function of some of the transistors in a chip.

So how would an HCI-based attack work? A transistor is an on-off
switch with three terminals: a source and a drain through which the
current flows, and a gate that sits above these terminals, linking
them together. Applying a voltage to the gate sets up an electric
field that allows a current to flow. The speed at which this happens
is crucial as it helps to determine the clock speed of a
microprocessor, or the access time of a memory.

The gate terminal has a layer of silicon dioxide insulation beneath it
which is constantly bombarded by electrons (hot carriers) whizzing
through the channel between the source and drain. To prevent that
insulation from deteriorating, engineers dope it with nitric oxide or
nitrous oxide during manufacturing to create a resilient nitrate
layer.

So without the need to know anything about the circuit design, an
engineer in a chip-making facility could modify the nitrate
concentration, or the temperature of the nitrate layering process, to
create a chip wafer with a thinner protective layer that is more
vulnerable to hot carriers. The upshot is that the switching time
becomes gradually slower until the gate's insulation breaks down
completely - at which point the chip fails.

Measuring the thickness of this layer in a chip is almost impossible
so victims are initially unaware they've been targeted. A further
problem is that the process of deterioration can vary hugely. That
would cause some devices on a wafer to wear out in months to a few
years, thus creating a reliability-based trojan, say the team.

Earlier this year, Colonel Glenn Zimmerman of the

Tactile Access to the iPhone Is Here
   by Tony Olivero

From the Editor: For several months now we have been hearing rumors
that the Apple iPhone is actually accessible or soon will be. Tony Olivero
is an access technology specialist in the Jernigan Institute International
Braille and Technology Center. Here is his report of learning to use an
iPhone:

Apple computer is generally regarded as a company on the cutting edge
of consumer computing technology. Many of Apple's products have brought
advanced ideas into the mainstream and popularized sleek form and easy-to-
use interfaces. The iPhone was certainly no exception. This device was the
most powerful handheld computing, telephony, and information-access device
on the market at the time of its initial launch. Unfortunately, as happens
with many new pieces of consumer technology, for two years blind users were
denied access to this cutting-edge product.
This lack of access changed in June 2009 when Apple released the
iPhone 3GS, the latest version of the phone's hardware platform with the
ability to use third-generation mobile phone networks to provide high-speed
data connectivity to the device. The iPhone 3GS is also the first touch-
screen device to provide out-of-the-box, built-in screen access.
Incorporating a version of Voiceover (Apple's screen-access product
included in the Macintosh Operating System since version 10.4 Tiger) the
iPhone provides blind users access to built-in software applications,
including email, text messaging, the Safari Web browser, and the telephone
itself. While this article will primarily focus on the speech output
provided by VoiceOver, accessibility features called Zooms and White on
Black may be useful to low-vision users.

 The iPhone

The iPhone 3GS comes in either a black or white case with a silver
Apple logo emblazoned on the back and offers either 16 or 32 gigabytes of
storage. The phone is a candy-bar-style device, which means it is flat and
does not fold like a flip phone. The back of the device is convex, allowing
the phone to rest comfortably in the user's hand. Users interact with the
iPhone almost entirely by using a touch screen. The phone has only four
buttons.
Most of the front surface is the screen, where information is
displayed to sighted users and they control the phone. At the top of the
front panel is the speaker hole, where sound is heard when the phone is
held to the ear. At the bottom is a round button, the home key. When
pressed, this key returns the user to the home screen, from which
applications are chosen.
Along the left edge is an up-and-down rocker switch used to control
volume for system sounds, speech output, and callers. Just above the volume
control is a two-way toggle switch used to select silent mode or sound.
When the toggle is nearer the front panel, the silent mode is disabled.
Options for silent mode can be customized by using the Sounds tab of the
Settings application.
The headphone jack is located at the top edge of the phone (it
accepts a standard 3.5mm plug for stereo headphones with or without a built-
in microphone). The Screen Lock/Power button is also located on the top
edge, at the right side. Pressing this button once turns the screen off,
placing the phone in locked mode, or wakes it up, presenting the user an
unlocked screen. Double-tapping the Unlock button provides access to the
phone. To power the phone off, hold down the Power button for ten seconds
and, when prompted, double-tap the Power button. The bottom edge of the
phone contains no controls, but it does house the speaker and dock
connector, where the charging/data transfer cable is inserted.
In addition to the phone, users receive a CD containing iTunes
software; a USB cable that connects to the dock connector; a pair of stereo
ear buds with a microphone, volume control, and Answer/Hang-up button built
into the right-hand ear bud cord; an AC adapter that accepts the USB cable
and allows charging from a standard outlet; and printed documentation.

Setting up and Synchronizing the Phone

In order to set up the iPhone for the first time, users must connect
it to a computer running iTunes. When iTunes detects the phone, it will
prompt the user to verify that he or she is the account holder and finalize
the configuration of the phone. Once the phone has been authorized, the
user can move onto configuring options and establishing synchronization
parameters.
When iTunes recognizes that an Apple device has been connected to the
computer, a devices node

Emotional robots: Will we love them or hate them?
Software that can tell our emotional state is on the way, but will
we like machines that can sense how we feel?

by Hazel Muir

SUNDAY, 1 February 2009, and 100 million Americans have got only one
thing on their minds - the Super Bowl. The Pittsburgh Steelers are
poised to battle the Arizona Cardinals in the most popular televised
sporting event in the US. In a hotel room in New York, 46 supporters
gather to watch the game, munching burgers and downing beers. Nothing
strange about that, of course, aside from the machines that are
monitoring these sports fans' every move and every breath they take.

The viewers are wearing vests with sensors that monitor their heart
rate, movement, breathing and sweat. A market research company has
kitted out the party-goers with these sensors to measure their
emotional engagement with adverts during commercial breaks.
Advertisers pay $3 million for a 30-second slot during the Super Bowl,
so they want to be as confident as they can be that their ads are
hitting home. And they are willing to pay for the knowledge. It's a
rapidly growing market - our revenues this year are four times what
they were last year, says Carl Marci, CEO and chief scientist for the
company running the experiment, Innerscope Research based in Boston,
Massachusetts.
Viewers are wearing vests with sensors that monitor their heart rate,
movement, breathing and sweat

Innerscope's approach is the latest in a wave of ever more
sophisticated emotion-sensing technologies. For years, computers in
some call centres have monitored our voices so that managers can home
in on what makes us fly into a wild rage. The latest technologies
could soon be built into everyday gadgets to smooth our interactions
with them. In-car alarms that jolt sleepy drivers awake, satnavs that
sense our frustration in a traffic jam and offer alternative routes,
and monitors that diagnose depression from body language are all in
the pipeline. Prepare for the era of emotionally aware gadgets.

Outside of science fiction, the idea of technology that reads emotions
has a brief, and chequered, past. Back in the mid-1990s, computer
scientist Rosalind Picard at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
suggested pursuing this sort of research. She was greeted with
scepticism. It was such a taboo topic back then - it was seen as very
undesirable, soft and irrelevant, she says.

Picard persevered, and in 1997 published a book called Affective
Computing, which laid out the case that many technologies would work
better if they were aware of their user's feelings. For instance, a
computerised tutor could slow down its pace or give helpful
suggestions if it sensed a student looking frustrated, just as a human
teacher would.

She also suggested that wearable computers could sense emotion in a
very direct way, by measuring your heart and breathing rate, or the
changes in the skin's electrical conductance that signal emotional
arousal. Wearable mood detectors could help people identify their
stress triggers or communicate how they are feeling to others.

The most established way to analyse a person's feelings is through the
tone of their voice. For several years, companies have been using
speech analytics software that automatically monitors conversations
between call-centre agents and customers. One supplier is NICE
Systems, based in Ra'anana, Israel. It specialises in
emotion-sensitive software and call-monitoring systems for companies
and security organisations, and claims to have more than 24,000
customers worldwide, including the New York Police Department and
Vodafone.

As well as scanning audio files for key words and phrases, such as a
competitor's name, the software measures stress levels, as indicated
by voice pitch and talking speed. Computers flag up calls in which
customers appear to get angry or stressed out, perhaps because they
are making a fraudulent insurance claim, or simply receiving poor
service.

Voice works well when the person whose feelings you are trying to
gauge is expressing themselves verbally, but that's not always the
case, so several research teams are now figuring out ways of reading a
person's feelings by analysing their posture and facial expressions
alone.

Many groups have made impressive progress in the field, first by
training computers to identify a face as such. Systems do this by
searching for skin tone and using algorithms to locate features like
the corners of the eyes and eyebrows, the nostrils and corners of the
mouth (see diagram).

The computer can then keep track of these features as they move, often
classifying the movements according to a commonly used emotion
encoding system. That system recognises 44 action units representing
facial movements. For instance, one might represent a smile - the
mouth stretches horizontally and its corners go up. Add to that an
eye-region movement that raises the cheeks and gives you crow's feet
and

[AI] General Interview Questions

2009-11-15 Thread Robin Augastin
hello accessindians

Questions start the minute the interview does, and to show that you
are an exceptional candidate, you need to be prepared to answer not
only the typical questions, but also the unexpected. You can expect
questions regarding your qualifications, your academic preparation,
career interests, experience, and ones that assess your personality.
1. Tell me about yourself
The most often asked question in interviews. You need to have a short
statement prepared in your mind. Be careful that it does not sound
rehearsed. Limit it to work-related items unless instructed otherwise.
Talk about things you have done and jobs you have held that relate to
the position you are interviewing for. Start with the item farthest
back and work up to the present.

2. Why did you leave your last job?
Stay positive regardless of the circumstances. Never refer to a major
problem with management and never speak ill of supervisors, co-workers
or the organization. If you do, you will be the one looking bad. Keep
smiling and talk about leaving for a positive reason such as an
opportunity, a chance to do something special or other forward-looking
reasons.

3. What experience do you have in this field?
Speak about specifics that relate to the position you are applying
for. If you do not have specific experience, get as close as you can.

4. Do you consider yourself successful?
You should always answer yes and briefly explain why. A good
explanation is that you have set goals, and you have met some and are
on track to achieve the others.

5. What do co-workers say about you?
Be prepared with a quote or two from co-workers. Either a specific
statement or a paraphrase will work.

6. What do you know about this organization?
This question is one reason to do some research on the organization
before the interview. Find out where they have been and where they are
going. What are the current issues and who are the major players?

7. What have you done to improve your knowledge in the last year?
Try to include improvement activities that relate to the job. A wide
variety of activities can be mentioned as positive self-improvement.
Have some good ones handy to mention.

8. Are you applying for other jobs?
Be honest but do not spend a lot of time in this area. Keep the focus
on this job and what you can do for this organization. Anything else
is a distraction.

9. Why do you want to work for this organization?
This may take some thought and certainly, should be based on the
research you have done on the organization. Sincerity is extremely
important here and will easily be sensed. Relate it to your long-term
career goals.

10. Do you know anyone who works for us?
Be aware of the policy on relatives working for the organization. This
can affect your answer even though they asked about friends not
relatives. Be careful to mention a friend only if they are well
thought of.

11. What kind of salary do you need?
A loaded question. A nasty little game that you will probably lose if
you answer first. So, do not answer it. Instead, say something like,
That's a tough question. Can you tell me the range for this position?
In most cases, the interviewer, taken off guard, will tell you. If
not, say that it can depend on the details of the job. Then give a
wide range.

12. Are you a team player?
You are, of course, a team player. Be sure to have examples ready.
Specifics that show you often perform for the good of the team rather
than for yourself are good evidence of your team attitude. Do not
brag, just say it in a matter-of-fact tone. This is a key point.

13. How long would you expect to work for us if hired?
Specifics here are not good. Something like this should work: I'd like
it to be a long time. Or As long as we both feel I'm doing a good job.

14. Have you ever had to fire anyone? How did you feel about that?
This is serious. Do not make light of it or in any way seem like you
like to fire people. At the same time, you will do it when it is the
right thing to do. When it comes to the organization versus the
individual who has created a harmful situation, you will protect the
organization. Remember firing is not the same as layoff or reduction
in force.

15. What is your philosophy towards work?
The interviewer is not looking for a long or flowery dissertation
here. Do you have strong feelings that the job gets done? Yes. That's
the type of answer that works best here. Short and positive, showing a
benefit to the organization.

16. If you had enough money to retire right now, would you?
Answer yes if you would. But since you need to work, this is the type
of work you prefer. Do not say yes if you do not mean it.

17. Have you ever been asked to leave a position?
If you have not, say no. If you have, be honest, brief and avoid
saying negative things about the people or organization involved.

18. Explain how you would be an asset to this organization
You should be anxious for this question. It gives you a chance to
highlight your best
