Time to grow-up! Disagreements need to be expressed in certain ways and it
seems that you have long way to go. For those who tried the apple computer know
very well the difference between standard paid screen readers for windows and
the in-build screen readers for mac. don't go by what is written on the book or
the site that are bombarded with rosy pictures, rather go by user's experience.

Mac's in-built screen reader is an accessibility eye-wash? look at these links:
http://www.apple.com/accessibility/voiceover/

http://www.afb.org/afbpress/Pub.asp?DocID=aw090603#content
Again, making generalizations without any backing what so ever. I
don't even know if you have used Mac. Of course, even I haven't, but
I have listened to demonstrations on websites.
There are other efforts Apple has made in relation to accessibility,
but as you mentioned MAC, I thought these are websites that will get
you out of your ignorence in this regard.
I don't want to go on and on, but the generalizations are gobsmaking
to say the least...

2009-12-11 Thread Ravi Paul
Are you one of those who used Mac and Voice over? or at least, what
does your research suggest about Apple's pretentions in relation to
accessibility - as your original post suggests? what prompts you to
put microsoft and Apple in the same group in terms of effort for
accessibility? Can you point me towards any review that says Apple is
not making any effort?
Note: I am not interested in personal battles, so comments related to
my age or any such thing will be ignored. We are discussing about
accessibility, and let us stay there.

 Dear Subramani sir:
You are right, Microsoft should provide a full-fledged screen reader
along with their Operating System (Windows). I strongly incline that
they should improve the standard and quality of Narrator itself. But I
don't believe Microsoft, as it has done almost nothing for making
their and 'others' software applications accessible, as far as I'm
concerned. I'm not denying its contribution in the form of Narrator
and accessible Windows, Internet explorer and so on. But I think
before we expect something from them, we should exert lot of pressure
and make them understand our difficulties in accessing their operating
systems. Yet Windows is les qualified than Macintosh in quality and
asurance, as far as I'm concerned.
Yet these are highly layman's opinions only.

Dear Mahendrabhai,

All of them are books in TXT format. This is the reason why there are so
many books in around 500 MB's. Actually, the uploaded folder is of 185 MB's.
The folder contains 469 authors! It's a treasure for the English literature
students and professors.

Vow!!!

It clearly indicates that the banks are giving ATM chequebooks net
banking etc. as a matter of grace rather than a matter of right!!
For this, we are also to be partly blamed for leaving out the essentials
from even IBA guidelines, as I have propounded number of times earlier.
The blame also lies in us adopting partly unrealistic attitude.
The other fault lies with typical Indian mindset of giving a go-by to
rule of law and following one's own sweet will instead of laid down
laws.

Modus operandi of a blind person operating all the banking facilities
keeping in mind interests of all concerned, will have to be worked out,
either by us, or by banks or by judiciary, I don't know who is best
placed to do the job.

Hi Friends,
I had my Savings account with dena bank, with facilities like NetBanking
and ChequeBook Till the month of March 2009.
As I encouraged to my other friends who had their accounts in PNB,
arguing that Dena Bank can issue the ChequeBook, ATM, and NetBanking to
the Visually Impaired people, who are using thumb impressions to operate
their account, then, why can't PNB?
The PNB have sent their Manager in dena bank at Jogeshwari branch, to
preventing them to do so, there after, even dena bank stopped claring my
cheques both, third party cheques and the cheques which I was issuing to
myself for Bank of India's account.
Ultimately, I had to cancel my account from dena bank.
Friends, that is why, the PNB has to be dragged in the court for their
objectional atitude.

Dear Mahendrabhai,

All of them are books in TXT format. This is the reason why there are so
many books in around 500 MB's. Actually, the uploaded folder is of 185 MB's.
The folder contains 469 authors! It's a treasure for the English literature
students and professors.

Hi Friends,
I had my Savings account with dena bank, with facilities like NetBanking and
ChequeBook Till the month of March 2009.
As I encouraged to my other friends who had their accounts in PNB, arguing
that Dena Bank can issue the ChequeBook, ATM, and NetBanking to the Visually
Impaired people, who are using thumb impressions to operate their account,
then, why can't PNB?
The PNB have sent their Manager in dena bank at Jogeshwari branch, to
preventing them to do so, there after, even dena bank stopped claring my
cheques both, third party cheques and the cheques which I was issuing to
myself for Bank of India's account.

Ultimately, I had to cancel my account from dena bank.
Friends, that is why, the PNB has to be dragged in the court for their
objectional atitude.

Regards,
Vijay Chavan.

Re: [AI] microsoft narrator is the best for sure great fan

2009-12-11 Thread srikanth kanuri
you can never compare voice over and microsoft narrator. voice over is
excellently rich in its features where narrator had nothing of it. it
contains all the features which a built in screen readers should have.
having used voice over for some time it is the best always compared to
many screen readers. there are many podcasts on blind cool tech which
anyone can listen to and are live recorded demonstrations and not just
reviews.

further even with I Phone 3 g voice over helps to control the touch
enabled screen with help of finger movements.
in snow leopard.

Controlling your Mac with touch and sound.

New in Snow Leopard is the ability to control VoiceOver with gestures
on your Mac notebook’s Multi-Touch trackpad. The trackpad surface can
represent the
active window on your computer screen. So you can touch to hear the
item under your finger, drag to hear items continuously as you move
your finger, and
flick with one finger to move to the next or previous item. For
example, you can drag your finger around the trackpad to learn how
items are arranged in
a web page, a spreadsheet, a presentation, or any document with text.

everyone will have their own preferences but it is no where useless
compared to narrator.

Workshop for visually challenged women

Staff Reporter

They will be made aware of their rights

They will get to know the government's welfare schemes

'Statistics of the visually challenged are unavailable'

Kozhikode: The Women's Forum of the Kerala Federation of the Blind, in
coordination with the Kerala Women's Commission, will organise a one-day
workshop for visually challenged women at the NGO Hall on Sunday.

The workshop is an initiative to make the government and society aware of the
problems faced by visually challenged women, said T. Devi, Women's Commission
member at a press conference at the Calicut Press Club.

The workshop will also aim to instil in visually challenged women awareness of
their rights and of the welfare schemes of the government. Over 300 women from
the 14 districts of Kerala would attend the workshop, said Noble Mery Chacko,
the president of the Women's Forum.

'Isolated lives'

Ms. Chacko said that visually challenged persons live isolated lives and such a
workshop would allow them to interact with other women in the same situation.
"Many of them are neglected by their families, some have none to depend on when
their parents die and it is imperative that we reach out to such women living
in rural areas," she said.

Ms. Devi said that even statistics of visually challenged persons was
unavailable and the Women's Commission would request for a study of the number
of such persons in the State through local bodies. The workshop will be
inaugurated by District Collector P.B. Salim. Lectures on 'Problems of Blind
Women and Solutions' by Noble Mery Chacko, 'Women's Commissions activities for
female empowerment' by T. Devi and 'The Law on Prevention of Domestic Violence'
by V.K. Prasanna will be presented at the workshop.

T. Sunil, district president of the Kerala Federation of the Blind asked
mediapersons to highlight the KFB's longstanding demand to raise pension for
visually challenged persons from Rs.250 to Rs.1,000.

Respected sir and other respected members:

Because of the slow internet connection I’m unable to download the
magazine. So till now I couldn’t read it at all. I found Drop box is
the best solution to this problem. Even you need not to split the
files. You can upload up to 2.5 GB at a time. Just you have to create
account then Install the drop box folder and paste the file which you
want to upload in the public folder in Drop Box folder. The file will
be uploaded to the Drop Box server and you can get the download link,
which you can paste in the mails. I like one great feature is that, it
has the resume capability for both upload and for download. After one
week, you can delete the file from the drop box server. It has so many
features so just try the link

www.dropbox.com

If you want any further information, please contact me off the list to
prevent unnecessary mail traffic in the list.

With warm regards

For scanning such thick books you have two options with you:

[AI] about scanning (Arpit Jain)

2009-12-11 Thread govind reddy
Dear Arpith sir:
Are there any such organisations? I to have lot of books of that size
to be scanned. Will they scann the books with out taring them in to
peaces?
This is very important to me as I don't want to see my books being
torn by some one. Will the quality be fine? Will they give us in Word
format?
Let me know all these details, and meanwhile, I live in Hyderabad of
Andhra pradesh.
