[AI] GD/PI at SCMHRD

2010-02-05 Thread ruchir falodiya

following is a blog post i've posted on
www.ruchir89.wordpress.com

thought of shareing this with all my accessindian friends. :)

Hello and a very good evening to all my readers.

first, to all my well wishers, i'm still on earth, and still living a
happy life, but just have been too busy with exams and projects, haven't
got enough time to write/edit/search a blog post for my audience.

today, i'm here to share my experience of my first interview at SCMHRD (
symbiosis center of management and human resource development.)

as most of you may know, i've appeared for cat, xat, and snap exams this
year, getting call from 1 of top20 management institute was certainly
very exciting for me.

with a bit of preparation for gd/pi, and hope to ace out the first
interview, booked tickets and went to pune to attend the overall process
on first feb.

everything was well organized, right from getting registration, to
document verification, filling checklist, all was well explained and
volunteers was always ready to help.

that gave a good start, but from here, things didn't went as i've expected.

first, because i was listed as a ph( physically handicap ) candidate, i
wasn't suppose to clear the gd round, and was directly sent for personal
interview.

maybe the management of SCMHRD was trying to be helpful, but no thanks.

we, differently able candidates believes in equal competition, and is
ready to face equal challenges just like our sited companions.

i didn't spoke anything at the venue since i didn't wanted to act over
smart and spoil my first life time opportunity, and stayed quiet.

then, i was sent to some other section where the senior management
member ( name not disclosed for prevention of personal offence ) was
taking the interview.

he looked at my CV, asked few questions, and was being positive so far.

but then, this is life, not a fairytale, where everything goes fine.

he told me that he prefers me to do 1 year job and then appear again.

he said, " you do have a very good knowledge and i really appreciate
that. but i've seen peoples like you who don't have any work experience,
terribly fails in first semester in most of the subjects. i believe you
should come again next year. "

i'm sorry, but i beg to differ.

" peoples like you?"
i didn't expected such hasty, non logical generalization from such a
senior management member of such a reputed management institute.

i'm really disappointed and depressed by such comment.

if other peoples, with enough knowledge and a willingness to do MBA can
join as a fresher, why can't i?

why discrimination and generalization?

now the results are due on 16th feb, and i'm not sure of what future
have for me, but, incidences like this, hampers the feeling of equality,
and d-motivates.

that's all what i had to say for now.

regards,

ruchir

[AI] Symbian phone operating system goes open source

2010-02-05 Thread Shiv
BBC News - Symbian phone operating system goes open source

BBC NEWS

Symbian switches to open source

By Jonathan Fildes
Technology reporter, BBC News

The group behind the world's most popular smartphone operating system - Symbian
- is giving away "billions of dollars" worth of code for free.

The Symbian Foundation's announced that it would make its code open source in
2008 and has now completed the move.

It means that any organisation or individual can now use and modify the
platform's underlying source code "for any purpose".

Symbian has shipped in more than 330m mobile phones, the foundation says.

It believes the move will attract new developers to work on the system and help
speed up the pace of improvements.

"This is the largest open source migration effort ever," Lee Williams of the
Symbian Foundation told BBC News.

"It will increase rate of evolution and increase the rate of innovation of the
platform."

Ian Fogg, principal analyst at Forrester research, said the move was about
Symbian "transitioning from one business model to another" as well as trying
to gain "momentum and mindshare" for software that had been overshadowed by the
release of Apple's iPhone and Google Android operating system.

Evolutionary barrier

Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia bought the software in 2008 and helped
establish the non-profit Symbian Foundation to oversee its development and
transition
to open source.

The foundation includes Nokia, AT&T, LG, Motorola, NTT Docomo, Samsung, Sony
Ericsson, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone.

" It's useful for them to say Symbian is now open - Google has done very well
out of that "
Ian Fogg

The group has now released what it calls the Symbian platform as open source
code. This platform unites different elements of the Symbian operating system
as well as components - in particular, user interfaces - developed by
individual members.

Until now, Symbian's source code was only open to members of the organisation.

It can be downloaded from the foundation's website from 1400 GMT.

Mr Williams said that one of the motivations for the move was to speed up the
rate at which the 10-year-old platform evolved.

"When we chatted to companies who develop third party applications, we found
people would spend up to nine months just trying to navigate the intellectual
property," he said.

"That was really hindering the rate of progress."

Opening up the platform would also improve security, he added.

'Mind share'

Symbian development is currently dominated by Nokia, but the foundation hoped
to reduce the firm's input to "no more than 50%" by the middle of 2011, said
Mr Williams.

"We will see a dramatic shift in terms of who is contributing to the platform."

However, said Mr Williams, the foundation would monitor phones using the
platform to ensure that they met with minimum standards.

Despite being the world's most popular smart phone operating system, Symbian
has been losing the publicity battle, with Google's Android operating system
and Apple's iPhone dominating recent headlines.

"Symbian desperately needs to regain mindshare at the moment," said Mr Fogg.

"It's useful for them to say Symbian is now open - Google has done very well
out of that."

He also said that the software "may not be as open and free as an outsider
might think".

"Almost all of the open source operating systems on mobile phones - Nokia's
Maemo, Google's Android - typically have proprietary software in them."

For example, Android incorporates Google's e-mail system Gmail.

But Mr Williams denied the move to open source was a marketing move.

"The ideas we are executing ideas came 12-18 months before Android and before
the launch of the original iPhone," Mr Williams told BBC News.

Subject: Accessible Devices Press Release: Technology Bill Of RightsIntroduced
For Blind U.S. Citizens

:U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky Introduces Technology Bill of
Rights for the Blind
: WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/
: National Federation of the Blind Applauds Measure to Ensure Blind People
Equal Access
: to Technology
: Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today introduced the Technology Bill of
Rights
: for the Blind (H.R. 4533), which will mandate that all consumer electronics,
home
: appliances, kiosks, and electronic office technology provide user interfaces
that
: are accessible to the blind.
: Dr. Marc Maurer, President of the National Federation of the Blind, said:
"The National
: Federation of the Blind appreciates the wise and decisive action taken today
by Representative
: Schakowsky. In recent years, advances in microchip and digital technology
have led
: to the proliferation of everyday products such as dishwashers or copy
machines that
: have visual displays and other user interfaces that are inaccessible to
individuals
: who are blind or have low vision. Inaccessibility of these devices is a major
barrier
: to a blind person's independence and productivity. The Technology Bill of
Rights
: will ensure that manufacturers make their products accessible to all
consumers, and
: that blind people will not be left behind as technology continues to advance."
: "The importance of access to technology in today's society cannot be
overstated.
: In many cases, a person's livelihood depends upon the ability to use
technology,"
: said Representative Schakowsky. "This bill will allow people who are blind or
have
: low vision to compete on a level playing field with their sighted peers and
remain
: productive members of society."
: About the National Federation of the Blind
: With more than 50,000 members, the National Federation of the Blind is the
largest
: and most influential membership organization of blind people in the United
States.
: The NFB improves blind people's lives through advocacy, education, research,
technology,
: and programs encouraging independence and self-confidence. It is the leading
force
: in the blindness field today and the voice of the nation's blind. In January
2004

The new Multimedia Print Reader – A review

In the World Book Fair 2010, there is great interest and euphoria in the
media and general public about the Multimedia Print Reader – MPR a pen like
device which claims to convert print books to talking books and also has lot
of usefulness for the blind. I had a look at this device and these are my
impressions.

I have seen this device and talked to the company representatives. I am
visiting the Book Fair because our DAISY Forum of India has a stall there
and got the opportunity to have a look at this MPR pen and also at
Infibeam.com’s Pi about which I will write soon.

Let me try to explain how this device works. It is a pen like device though
much broader and bigger. It has buttons for switching it ON and OFF and
also has buttons for language selection. It has an in-built battery which
can be charged with a mobile phone type charger. It has a USB port for PC
connectivity. It has 2 GB internal memory. It is supplied with earphones and
the charger and you get one year warranty on the device.

If you decide to buy this device for Rs. 5600 plus taxes, you will get a set
of complimentary books. The pen will have MP3 files containing recording of
all these books. It may have recording of the same book in more than one
language such as English and Hindi. For using this pen, you can switch it
on, select a language button and then place the tip of the pen on the small
dark circles on the page. It will scan & read the code in that dark circle
and then play the corresponding audio file from its memory. You can listen
to it from the internal speaker or attach the headphone you get with it or
connect your PC speakers.

You will have to place the pen on the next circle and you will be able to
listen to its recording. You can press the other language button on the pen
and if the publisher has provided alternate language recording in the pen,
you will listen to the other language narration even though you may be
having a different language book. I mean to say the pen can play Hindi files
which contain a translated version of your English book.

The pen manufacturer claims that they are collaborating with more and more
publishers for bringing out books which have these MPR (encoded marks) on
the pages. So, when you come across any new book in the market which has the
MPR logo on its cover page, you can be sure that it can be listened to with
the pen. You will have to buy the hard copy and download its audio
recordings from the publisher’s website and copy them to your pen. For
downloading the recordings, you will need a password which will be the pen's
serial number. After having loaded the new files in the pen you will be able
to use it with the new book.

Some of the interesting applications of this technology can be
- A child can learn to pronounce new words in the book by listening to them
- A child can listen to descriptions of images in the book in different
languages
- A person reading an English book can listen to its Hindi translations for
better understanding
- A dictionary or an encyclopaedia can contain pronunciations of difficult
words.

The success of this technology depends upon acceptance of this MPR concept
by more and more publishers. The users will have to buy the hard copies of
the new books and also will have to download and transfer files to the pen.
Therefore it requires use of computer and the internet by the users.

As far as usefulness for blind persons is concerned, I don’t think it is a
great device. Using this pen will be very difficult as the blind person will
not be able to locate these marks on the pages easily. Further, the blind
user will not be able to navigate to a particular chapter or paragraph
quickly. He will have to read and check out many pages and paragraphs before
he gets to his desired point in the book. Blind persons will be very happy
if they just get the audio files of the books which they can listen to on
their MP3 players or computers.

One blind friend is of the opinion that this pen may be useful for the blind
parents for teaching their sighted children. May be, but I cannot think of
any more usefulness of this device for the blind.

Subject: [AI] GD/PI at SCMHRD

following is a blog post i've posted on
www.ruchir89.wordpress.com

thought of shareing this with all my accessindian friends. :)

Hello and a very good evening to all my readers.

first, to all my well wishers, i'm still on earth, and still living a
happy life, but just have been too busy with exams and projects, haven't
got enough time to write/edit/search a blog post for my audience.

today, i'm here to share my experience of my first interview at SCMHRD (
symbiosis center of management and human resource development.)

as most of you may know, i've appeared for cat, xat, and snap exams this
year, getting call from 1 of top20 management institute was certainly very
exciting for me.

with a bit of preparation for gd/pi, and hope to ace out the first
interview, booked tickets and went to pune to attend the overall process
on first feb.

everything was well organized, right from getting registration, to
document verification, filling checklist, all was well explained and
volunteers was always ready to help.

that gave a good start, but from here, things didn't went as i've
expected.

first, because i was listed as a ph( physically handicap ) candidate, i
wasn't suppose to clear the gd round, and was directly sent for personal
interview.

maybe the management of SCMHRD was trying to be helpful, but no thanks.

we, differently able candidates believes in equal competition, and is
ready to face equal challenges just like our sited companions.

i didn't spoke anything at the venue since i didn't wanted to act over
smart and spoil my first life time opportunity, and stayed quiet.

then, i was sent to some other section where the senior management member
( name not disclosed for prevention of personal offence ) was taking the
interview.

he looked at my CV, asked few questions, and was being positive so far.

but then, this is life, not a fairytale, where everything goes fine.

he told me that he prefers me to do 1 year job and then appear again.

he said, " you do have a very good knowledge and i really appreciate that.
but i've seen peoples like you who don't have any work experience,
terribly fails in first semester in most of the subjects. i believe you
should come again next year. "

i'm sorry, but i beg to differ.

" peoples like you?"
i didn't expected such hasty, non logical generalization from such a senior
management member of such a reputed management institute.

i'm really disappointed and depressed by such comment.

if other peoples, with enough knowledge and a willingness to do MBA can
join as a fresher, why can't i?

why discrimination and generalization?

now the results are due on 16th feb, and i'm not sure of what future have
for me, but, incidences like this, hampers the feeling of equality, and
d-motivates.

that's all what i had to say for now.

regards,

ruchir

I second that recommendation. My brother uses a netbook which weighs only 1
kg while my laptop weighs 2.5 kgs.

I agree. I had experience with Toshiba and HP, the later is far better
in terms of their customer service. If I were you, I would consider
netbook as an option since it is easy to carry and has almost all the
functions of a laptop.
