Hiya

Please find below my opinion about N86, as I had used it 6 months ago.

N86 makes a good music phone, thanks to its dedicated music keys and its
standard 3.5mm headphone jack, which means you can use your own
headphones without an adaptor. It also has an FM radio and an Internet
radio, with good podcast support. There's plenty of storage for all your
tunes, with 8GB of internal memory and a microSD memory-card slot that
supports up to 16GB more. It comes with stereo dual speakers with 3D and
widening effects with loud and clear voice, talks sounds very good and
supports Bluetooth A2DP.

Syncing your music, videos and other data is fairly easy with the Nokia
PC Suite software, which has been steadily improving over the years,
advancing from crap to decent. It offers some great advantages, like the
ability to sync over Bluetooth and type SMS messages on your computer
before sending them to your phone, so you get to use a proper keyboard.
But the music-manager part of PC Suite still doesn't compete with
dedicated music software, so you might prefer to connect the N86 in
mass-storage mode and sync your music with your favourite music software.
That's also handy if you have a Mac, because PC Suite only works on PCs.
There are sone apps and web browser, where 'Talks' doesn't support -
which might be fixed in upcoming update of Talks.

The Nokia N86 doesn't break much new ground and It's not as easy to use
(most difficult to browse things) comparing to the N95, E90 or the N97,
for example, but it really packs in the features, and, if you can find
them, there are zillions of fantastic apps out there to make it even
better. Best of all, for a phone, it takes excellent photos, with almost
no shutter lag. As a top-of-the-line camera phone with all the power of a
smart phone, I think the N86 is worth having.

Cheers
- KG

I'm planning to purchase a new mobile phone. Before going in for N86, I
want some feedback from its users. Please, tell me what are its plus and
minus points?
Specially, the audio quality, its ability to read text and other
files,reproduction of music etc.

Sorry, if I offended anyone with my question.

Hi,

I'm madleen from uk, sorry never sent an introduction.
I've got an n86 and it's brilliant. It's fine with talks although I did
hear there is still something to be fixed with functions in the web but
that will be fixed in the next firmware which is coming soon .

It works brilliant for reproducing music with text messages or mms etc.
Feel free to ask questions about it.

It doesn't bother me but other vi people said that they find it annoying
that there is no little marker on the five.

Best wishes, Madleen

There go to the mobile navigation link and have a look at the product. It is
compatible with several windows, HTC, black berry mobiles and the cost of the

maps for 401 indian cities. Or you can call 011- 4600 , Toll-free

Hi,

1. The only two GPS programs that work reliably in India are Wayfinder
Access and loadstone.

2. Accuracy is dependent on the GPS receiver you use. I use GPS heavily and
get accuracy up to 5 meters. I have an external GPS receiver. Most internal
GPS receivers are of poor quality so are less accurate and take a long time
to acquire a signal as compared to external GPS receivers.

3. I have contacted a lot of companies to ask if they have maps for India.
GPS per se will work anywhere in the world but having maps for that area is
the key issue here. They do not consider India a big enough market.

4. Wayfinder Access is an offshoot of a product called Wayfinder. This
product is meant for the main stream and does have good maps for India. This
is what I use everyday. Unfortunately, Vodaphone, who owns the product has
discontinued further development so we are in a bind. Please sign the
petition at http://www.talknav.com/protest

5. Loadstone is an open source product and the users have to make the maps
themselves. The problem with loadstone is that it does not provide routing
capabilities so you will not get turn-by-turn directions unless you define
them while planning your route. The bigger problem is that with loadstone,
you do not know immediately that you are off track. It will not plot an
alternative route for you. This is again a limitation of the kind of map
data that is freely available. You do not have information about streets
etc., in freely available map data.

I hope that clarifies the GPS issue.
Pranav

Re: [AI] Screen reader with Linux

2010-02-21 Thread Ravi Paul
Well... Orca is an open source project. Just because some company
stops supporting the project, it does not really need to stop. Orca's
development might not be as quick as it used to be, but... it will not
be completely discontinued. Orca is very much in the distributions, so
there is no reason to be worried. If you are familiar with the Linux
console mode-which, admittedly I am not-you can use other screen
readers such as Speakup and YASR (yet another screen reader...).

Subject: [AI] suggestions needed for buying a new Laptop.

Dear friends,

I am looking to buy a new Laptop for my personal use.
There are two models in my mind: Compaq Presario CQ41 216TU with the
configuration of Core I3 Mobile Processor, 2.13 gh , 4 GB of DDR3 Ram, 320
GB Harddisk and another one is Dell new Inspiron 1464 with Core I3, speed
2.13, 2 GB DDR3 Ram, 250 GB Harddis, Windows 7 basic home premium.
Compaq has no OS installed whereas the Dell is giving me the Windows 7. The
price for Compaq Presario is Rs. 33000 and Dell is costing me around 31000.
Another good thing I found in the Warranty system of Dell that the Machine
has all complete cover onside warranty where as the Compaq doesn't include
any such complete cover, onside or replacement provision. Compaq seems good
with it's configuration of Ram and Hard drive but the Dell is found very
good in the support and warranty.
Apart from user friendly Keypad, I will require good sound in the Machine.

Any suggestion or opinion of the members would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,

Amit Bhatt, +91 9560175887

Firstly, it's Karan not Karen. Please do refer the archive of iPhone 3GS
where I mentioned about its accessibility options. In short, it comes with
built-in voice-over synthesizer exacltly like Mac and a built-in magnifier
and a add-on app for shake dialing. I won't recommend its voice over
though

entirely based on its touch screen because there are always a loads of
confusion and trouble to access it accurately and speedly for my totally
VI

friends unlike the other traditional phones, which gives you tactile
feedback. Having said that, its magnification technology is really state
of

the art. Infact, once you use it - you get addicted of it somewhat like
zoomtext and even better than 'magic' on PC but all this features are
really

very handy for low vision or partially-blind. About its performance: Among
the 3G S' new features, the unsung heroes have to be the improved
performance and battery life. Well, the improved performance is somewhat
sung, since the 'S' in the phone's name stands for 'speed'. Although it's
not as glamorous as cut-and-paste capability -- I never thought I'd be
writing that -- it improves the experience of using a phone that already
feels top of its class for responsiveness. The 3GS also supports voice
control, which suits me, since I like to yell to myself on the Delhi-Metro
to frighten off muggers. lol. It's activated by holding down the home
button
or pressing the button on the included headphones. You can use it to
control
the iPod functionality, as well for making calls. I was happy to see that
it

supports UK/US English, so I didn't have to put on a Cupertino accent to
make myself understood. It had no trouble recognising who I wanted to
phone
or what band I wanted to play, and it prompted me pleasantly when there
were
several phone numbers on offer. Not a day goes by when I don't use
in-built
GPS system, which is overall alright. I can track all that running with
the
built-in GPS, and there's a compass to point me where I want to go in
Google

Maps. It's also great for finding the correct exit from the London Tube or
Delhi Metro, but it isn't used in Google Street View in the very cool way
I've seen on the HTC Magic. I'm looking forward to what developers will do
with the compass app in the future. The landscape keyboard makes its way
into the messaging apps and Web browser in OS 3.0, which is great for
sausage-fingered typists, and could help if this is your first touchscreen
keyboard. I've always been big fans of the iPhone's keyboard, whether in
portrait or landscape orientation, because of its great predictive text.
It's even better than a full netbook keyboard for typing in the passenger
seat of my coach everytime I go out of town. OS 3.0 also includes MMS, so
you can send images, video, audio and contacts in text messages. It works
painlessly, but only images can be put in directly to a text. You can also
send links to locations from Google Maps, which is my favourite use of
MMS.

For such a great entertainment phone with access to the iTunes store, I
used

to be frustrated that I couldn't grab TV shows and movies as easily as
music. Thankfully, Apple's now remedied that, although I'm still annoyed
that we can't stream to podcasts. Damn the data costs.

Hello all,
May I suggest a program that extends your battery life by managing the
battery-sucking features of your phone according to "profiles"? The
program is called Battery Extender. It works beautifully with Talks and
my Nokia N73, although only five features of my phone are managed since
I don't have GPS or whatever else it manages. I'm using the maximum
battery profile, and up to now I'm still on 7 bars of battery despite me
using it a fair bit, for example connecting to my Twitter account via
Tweets60! You can download a 14 day free trial, which reverts to the
light version after that, from www.tweets60.com.
Enjoy!

That's not true. I know totally blind persons who use the voice over of the
Iphone very effectively. The only issue some of them seen to be having is to
input texts, but it is to do with practice.

Firstly, it's Karan not Karen. Please do refer the archive of iPhone 3GS
where I mentioned about its accessibility options. In short, it comes with
built-in voice-over synthesizer exacltly like Mac and a built-in magnifier
and a add-on app for shake dialing. I won't recommend its voice over though
entirely based on its touch screen because there are always a loads of
confusion and trouble to access it accurately and speedly for my totally VI
friends unlike the other traditional phones, which gives you tactile
feedback. Having said that, its magnification technology is really state of
the art. Infact, once you use it - you get addicted of it somewhat like
zoomtext and even better than 'magic' on PC but all this features are really
very handy for low vision or partially-blind.
The 3GS also supports voice
control, which suits me, since I like to yell to myself on the Delhi-Metro
to frighten off muggers. lol. It's activated by holding down the home button
or pressing the button on the included headphones. You can use it to control
the iPod functionality, as well for making calls. I was happy to see that it
supports UK/US English, so I didn't have to put on a Cupertino accent to
make myself understood. It had no trouble recognising who I wanted to phone
or what band I wanted to play, and it prompted me pleasantly when there were
several phone numbers on offer. Not a day goes by when I don't use in-built
GPS system, which is overall alright. I can track all that running with the
built-in GPS, and there's a compass to point me where I want to go in Google
You can also
send links to locations from Google Maps, which is my favourite use of MMS.

For such a great entertainment phone with access to the iTunes store, I used
to be frustrated that I couldn't grab TV shows and movies as easily as
music. Thankfully, Apple's now remedied that, although I'm still annoyed
that we can't stream to podcasts. Damn the data costs.

I was also there in the training as a student. I want to add one more point
that this software is portable. It is in a pen drive (Dolphin pen) and there
is no need to install it, just fix the device in your system's USB port and
it is ready to use. You can keep it with you and work on computer where you
want.

Subject: [AI] Super Nova, an another screen reading software with magnifier!

Hello list members,
Hope, this mail of mine might interest some of you.
On 18th and 19th February, training was held in AICB conducted by
Shilpi Kapoor MD OF Barrier Break. The training was on a screen
reading software called Super Nova. It was the trainer training
program in which an overview was given on how to use super nova.

Being, one of the participant I enjoyed the training. Thus, I would
like to discuss its few features.
Super nova comes in complete package of 3 combinations.
The first is Hal, which is screen reader.
Second is the Lunar, which is a magnifier.
And the third is Lunar +, which is magnification with minimum speech
is. In addition all the three as whole, is super nova.
. Best things about Hal.
It has three synthesizers. First is Sam, which is Super Nova's default
voice.
The other is the eloquence, which is our own JAWS voice, and the next
is the real solo with Sangeeta TTS, which has the Indian accent voice
for English and Lekha TTS for Hindi. Suppose, you have a document
which contains text both in Hindi and English, then setting the
synthesizer to real solo will read the text in the document in both
Hindi and English without changing the lay outs.

. Best things about Lunar.
This feature is very good for persons with low vision. You can magnify
the screen upto 60X, without loosing its sharpness. It comes with
several color schemes which can be set according to your need, comfort
and choice. You can also modify and highlight the mouse pointers for
your convenience.
. Best things about Super Nova.
The complete package of Super Nova comes under Rs. 1.
It has support for both English and Hindi TTS, a magnifier and a
support for Braille display.
Guys, if you want to try Super Nova, you can download the 30 days
trial version.
Please find the link below to download.

If you have iPhone, then you have a technology that is even better than A-GPS.
It is called Skyhook Wireless technology and it uses the Wi-Fi capabilities of
a phone along with its GPS system and cell towers. The ability of Skyhook to
glean the position information from 3 different sources makes it more accurate
especially in places where satellite signals are weak.
Nokia’s Ovi Store and Apple’s app Store both have applications based on Skyhook
You can visit
http://www.skyhookwireless.com/howitworks/
and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skyhook_Wireless
for more information.
The presence of additional technologies on a cell phone makes it even more
useful than a stand-alone GPS navigation device.

That's true, although Wayfinder's icons were most likely labeled. When you go
into Talks Icons settings sheet, you can find direction related graphics
labeled like Left turn, Right turn, etc.

TalkBack with Google Maps does that, but I’m digressing away from the phones
under discussion.

Dell inspiron 1464 is a new line of their notebooks. Whilst Compaq Presario
CQ41 216TU is quite for some time in the market. Dell 1464 is really a
affordable beast with good build quality, good travel in keyboard and more
responsive CPU than latter one. Although, there were several issues with the
speakers of Dell with their earlier inspiron series, which they have taken
it seriously and fixed them all. Compaq Presario CQ41 216TU is relatively a
good machine as well but the 4 gigs of RAM, which any one won't require more
than 2 gigs in any case unless you're a big time developer to handle and
edit big video softwares or music softwares for DJing. With all the apps
open like JAWS, Music, MS Office and Internet Explorer etc. your CPU
performance won't clock more than 1.5 gigs of usage. Lastly, When both the
machines kept side by side - Dell 1464 is faster by few seconds whilst
poering on and opening any application. Compaq Presario CQ41 216TU is not a
bad idea thogh if you don't mind installing OS and after sales services.

• Best things about Hal.
It has three synthesizers. First is Sam, which is Super Nova’s default

• Best things about Lunar.
This feature is very good for persons with low vision. You can magnify
the screen upto 60X, without loosing its sharpness. It comes with
several color schemes which can be set according to your need, comfort
and choice. You can also modify and highlight the mouse pointers for
your convenience.
• Best things about Super Nova.
The complete package of Super Nova comes under Rs. 1.
It has support for both English and Hindi TTS, a magnifier and a
support for Braille display.
Guys, if you want to try Super Nova, you can download the 30 days
trial version.
Please find the link below to download.

Subject: [AI] Artificial Retina Enables Blind To See Again

The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded major responsibility for the
development of a third-generation retina prosthesis to Lawrence
Livermore National Laboratory, California. The third-generation
artificial retina will enable previously blind people to read,
recognize people's faces and restore mobility so that people can
navigate about the world again using their sight.

The retinal implant is designed for the millions of patients worldwide
suffering from retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular
degeneration, since it implants an electrode array atop the old
damaged retina to stimulate the undamaged nerve ganglia lying
underneath, with image information wirelessly transmitted to it from a
video camera mounted on a pair of eyeglasses.

The first-generation implants were successfully tested on six
patients, but only held 16 electrodes (4-by-4-pixel array), which
enabled the crude perception of lighted areas versus darkness after
about 15 seconds. The second-generation implant upped the electrode
array to 60 electrodes, which enabled 34 test patients to recognize
doorways and windows as well as the edges that assist in navigation,
such as walls and low-lying branches, after about 3 seconds.

The goal of the third generation of the implant will be to increase
the electrode array to more than 200 electrodes, which will enable the
near instantaneous recognition of text for reading, pictures and all
the edge cues needed to navigate the world unaided. Ultimately, the
artificial retinal will contain over 1,000 electrodes, which should
restore instantaneous recognition of faces and other fine details that
should fully integrate patients back into everyday society.

The artificial retinas are being fabricated on silicon wafers by LLNL
with the assistance of four other national laboratories, four
universities and a private company, Second Sight Medical Products
(Sylmar, Calif.), the latter of which will be responsible for
commercializing the third-generation device, including performing all
the field trials necessary to obtain full Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) approval.

Also instrumental in the third-generation device will be the Doheny
Eye Institute, at the University of Southern California (Los Angeles),
which will provide the clinical testing of the electrode array
implants, and Argonne National Laboratory (Illinois), which will use
its ultrananocrystalline diamond film technology to hermetically seal
the package for the prosthetic device to protect it from the salty
environment inside the eyeball.

The third-generation retinal implants are fabricated 12 at a time on
silicon wafers using LLNL's polymer-based micro-fabrication
techniques. The entire retinal implant assembly is composed of a
thin-film electrode array that contains the neural electrodes and a
biocompatible package that contains the electronics for stimulating
the retina, as well as a wireless receiver for powering the device and
receiving the image data from the camera. LLNL is also developing a
companion ocular surgical tool that will enable the easy insertion and
attachment of the thin-film electrode array inside the eye.

Other project contributors include Los Alamos National Laboratory, Oak
Ridge National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratory, California
Institute of Technology, North Carolina State University and the
University of California at Santa Cruz.

Hiya
I also use google maps, which is built-in my iPhone 3GS and it works
very accurately with turn by turn directions. However, As I said in my
earlier post that accuracy and functionality would stll remain a
problem for some time in India, unless companies don't come out with
detailed maps. For example, google's street view. No matter, how
accurate or good your GPS systems are but I strongly do believe there
are still so many details are missing as it should be there on maps.
Also the updation process of maps in any GPS system is quite slow. I'd
always expect more and more details in any GPS system with better
accuracy and updation process so that a larger chunk of VH population
can take full advantage of this and won't hesitate to be dependant on
it to a certain extent. Exactly like JAWS, I wish GPS would work the
same way for VH sooner or later but I really don't think so that any
GPS is that reliable for VH because of the lack of details.

[AI] suggestions needed for buying a new Laptop.....

2010-02-21 Thread Amit Bhatt
Dear friends,

I am looking to buy a new Laptop for my personal use.
There are two models in my mind: Compaq Presario CQ41 216TU with the
configuration of Core I3 Mobile Processor, 2.13 gh , 4 GB of DDR3 Ram, 320 GB
Harddisk and another one is Dell new Inspiron 1464 with Core I3, speed 2.13, 2
GB DDR3 Ram, 250 GB Harddis, Windows 7 basic home premium.
Compaq has no OS installed whereas the Dell is giving me the Windows 7. The
price for Compaq Presario is Rs. 33000 and Dell is costing me around 31000.
Another good thing I found in the Warranty system of Dell that the Machine has
all complete cover onside warranty where as the Compaq doesn't include any
such complete cover, onside or replacement provision. Compaq seems good with
it's configuration of Ram and Hard drive but the Dell is found very good in the
support and warranty.
Apart from user friendly Keypad, I will require good sound in the Machine.

Any suggestion or opinion of the members would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,

Amit Bhatt, +91 9560175887

Hi

I had posted this on Access India before and this is not an off topic
post. There is lot to learn for our governments from the auto driver
who does the following
25 per
> cent discount on metered fare for the handicapped.
> Free rides for blind passengers up to Rs. 50.

And seeing my post on the list in google search, one Mr. Ravindra Rao
has called me from Banglore asking for the contact details of that
auto driver as he wanted to write about him in an international
magazine. Unfortunately, I didn't get that.

So, if anyone of you, especially from Mumbai, knows about him or comes
across him, provide me with his contact details.

Re: [AI] accessible gps comparison

2010-02-21 Thread Geetha Shamanna
Manish,

Loadstone can be used in conjunction with GoogleMaps. Visit
http://groute.loadstone-gps.pl/index.php?l=en
Enter the source and target destination here, and this site produces a
checkpoints file using data from GoogleMaps. It is quite good.

A couple more things:
1. Not all internal receivers are poor. On newer phones like nokia n79 and
the apple iphone, the internal receivers are just as good and sometimes even
better than external receivers. Internal receivers are able to use a
technology called a-gps (which uses data from mobile towers in addition to
satellites to triangulate). A-gps is available on only specific external
receivers.

2. When Pranav says below that only wayfinder and loadstone have maps for
India, he probably means the only 2 accessible products. Nokia maps is free
and they also have detailed maps for Delhi (and I am assuming for other
Indian cities as well) but are not usable with talks. I have used nokia maps
with sighted assistance and they give turn by turn direction announcements
that are just as good as wayfinder. Not to mention Google maps (I am looking
for a product that will give turn by turn announcements with Google maps).

Hi,

Pranav
