Sony Ericsson Vivaz (review)

Sony Ericsson launches its latest handset - Vivaz

 By Mihir Patkar

In a world dominated by Android, iPhone OS and Windows Mobile, it's nice
to see someone bucking the trend. Sony Ericsson's new phone, the Vivaz,
runs on the Symbian S60 5th edition operating system that a lot of Nokia
phones sport; only Sony has thrown in a few tricks of its own to
customise it further.

Powered by a 720MHz processor, the Vivaz has a 3.2-inch resistive
touchscreen that displays 16 million colours at a resolution of 320x620
pixels - and it's all bright and clear thanks to the built-in PoweVR SGX
graphics engine. There's an accelerometer for auto-rotation, handwriting
recognition, and turn-to-mute functionality.

The camera is the big attraction of this handset as Sony has thrown in
an 8-megapixel CMOS sensor, complete with autofocus, LED flash, touch
focus, geo-tagging, face and smile detection. And the best part is that
it can record 720p high-definition video with continuous autofocus, and
comes with video light functionality for illuminating dark shots. What's
more, all of the videos and pictures you shoot and store on microSD card
(up to 16GB) can be viewed directly on a TV screen thanks to the TV-out
port.

There's enough multimedia support onboard here as the device has the
ability to play back all kinds of audio and video formats, but no DivX.
Stereo FM radio is available for those who prefer their tunes over the
air, and there's also a handy 3.5mm audio jack to plug in your own
headphones.

The phone comes preloaded with apps for YouTube, Facebook, Twitter,
Picasa, Google Maps (with GPS and A-GPS), QuickOffice document reader,
etc. Other features include 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth with A2DP, gesture
control, and 13 hours of talk-time on a single charge of the battery.

The Sony Ericsson Vivaz is now available in India for Rs. 25,695.

Regards,
Vishnu

[AI] 'Right to education will remain a dream'

2010-04-15 Thread Vishnu Ramchandani
'Right to education will remain a dream'

Mayura Janwalkar / DNA

Mumbai: The Union government has made the right to education a
fundamental right; but almost 70 million print-disabled people will find
it difficult to access textbooks and other study material if the
government amends the Copyright Act, 1957.

The amended act will make it mandatory to have licences to reproduce
copyrighted work in any format - even it is meant for the use of persons
suffering from visual, aural, or other disability.

The amended proposal may be introduced in Parliament in the current
budget session, Dr Sam Taraporevala, director of the Xavier's Resource
Centre for the Visually Challenged (XRCVC), said at a press conference
on Thursday. He said the government should reconsider changing the act.

"There are a few proposed amendments," Kanchan Pamnani, visually
impaired advocate and solicitor, said. "But this will make our life more
difficult." Citing her experience while she was studying law, Pamnani
said a plethora of reference books had to be unbound and scanned for her
to study. "It was a back-breaking job because such books ran into
thousands of pages."

If the act is changed, an organisation working for the disabled will
have to apply for a licence from the copyright board before reproducing
any copyrighted text.

The process of accessing available material will become more tedious,
she said. "If somebody in Kolkata has already scanned the reference
material why should I have to do it again here?"

Print disability, apart from the blind, applies to those suffering from
dyslexia and cerebral palsy. "When I was doing my MBA, I spent most of
my time searching for reference material that could be accessed in a
format I could read," Ketan Kothari of Sightsavers International said.
"Braille is cumbersome and expensive. Now, there are formats that can
convert text to audio."

Of the 70 million disabled people in the country, 20 million were
children, Eliabeth Kurian, regional director of Sightsavers
International, said. "Their right to education will not be a reality if
the act is changed."

So, no comments on lack of disability field in household survey and NPR?
Has only one organization taken up the full responsibility of representing

Is it fair?
At least they are doing something, let them do, right?

The Supreme Court refuses to intervene and allow a dyslexic boy to use
a calculator in his Class XII CBSE examination.

M. GOVARTHAN

A file picture of a dyslexic boy, studying in a school in Tamil Nadu,
taking his SSLC examination with the help of a scribe.

A supreme Court Bench, comprising Justices Markandey Katju and R.M.
Lodha, has deplored the court’s practice of admitting all sorts of
appeals against judgments delivered by High Courts. This, it said, led
to mounting arrears and put undue pressure on judges to compromise
quality for the sake of quick delivery of judgments. The Bench, which
was disposing of a special leave petition (SLP) on March 21, referred
to a Constitution Bench the question of determining guidelines for
admitting SLPs.

Frivolous SLPs, which do not raise a constitutional question, seem to
have played havoc with the liberties of underprivileged citizens and
also tied the hands of High Courts and the Supreme Court in providing
timely relief in cases that brought up genuine issues.

On March 19 the Supreme Court was confronted with the case of a
dyslexic student from Panchkula, Haryana, who sought immediate relief.
The student, Pranjay Jain, approached the court through his father,
Nitin Jain, after the Punjab and Haryana High Court rejected his
prayer for permission to use a calculator in the Class XII
examinations conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education.
Jain wanted to use the calculator especially for the mathematics
paper, scheduled for March 22.

Pranjay Jain was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of 10. The medical
certificate issued by the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education
and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, notes that he has a difficulty in
arithmetic and that he has a poor concept of fractions, and he has
been advised the use of a calculator. He claimed protection of his
rights on account of natural disability under the provisions of the
Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights
and Full Participation) Act, 1995, and related laws. He sought the
High Court’s direction to the CBSE to permit him to use a calculator
for the Class XII examinations and for the All India Engineering
Entrance Examination (AIEEE) scheduled to be held in April (also
conducted by the CBSE), besides granting him additional time and a
scribe to write the paper.

The High Court was constrained to reject his prayer on March 2 in view
of the stay granted by the Supreme Court on April 2, 2007, on the
operation of a Bombay High Court order in an SLP filed by the CBSE
against the High Court’s order in Sushil Kumar vs Kendriya Vidyalaya.

Sushil Kumar, also suffering from dyslexia, had requested that he be
permitted to use a calculator for the Class XII examinations in
mathematics, physics and chemistry. He also wanted parity with
dyslexic students of the HSC Board, Maharashtra, who are permitted to
use calculators in the examinations. The High Court accepted his
contention in its order on February 26, 2007.

The CBSE argued before the High Court that students suffering from
dyslexia should not opt for mathematics. The High Court described the
CBSE’s approach as unfair and directed it to permit Sushil Kumar and
other students with similar disability to use ordinary calculators for
writing the mathematics paper if they apply for such permission.

The Supreme Court admitted the CBSE’s appeal against this judgment and
granted a stay on its operation. However, before the CBSE could secure
the stay, it had to permit the use of calculators by such students for
the mathematics examination held on March 22, 2007, in compliance with
the Bombay High Court order. The stay granted by the Supreme Court,
therefore, was misconceived.

The Bombay High Court had also relied on a 2006 order of a Division
Bench of the High Court directing the HSC Board, Maharashtra, to
permit learning-disabled students to use calculators in the Class XII
mathematics, bookkeeping and accountancy examinations of the Board.
This Bench disagreed with the Board’s view that if even after using a
calculator the performance of learning-disabled children did not
improve, they might get more frustrated and dispirited. More
important, this Division Bench decided the case after considering the
report of an expert committee that studied the issue.

Policy for disabled

In his petition, Pranjay Jain pointed out that the National Policy for
Persons with Disability, announced in February 2006, contained
provisions for facilities for persons suffering from dyslexia, which,
among other things, included the use of a calculator. The policy
recommended the following:

“Examination system will be modified to make it disabled-friendly by
exemptions such as learning mathematics, learn

Dear Friends

The inventor of talks software, the first software that made mobile phone
accessible to us is no more and left us in young age. I had the privilege to
meet him in person in October 2009 in Geneva where DAISY Consortium and
Nuance were together in UNESCO pavilion in the world telecom exhibition.
With my thousand salutes to him I am pasting below the announcement from his
partner and co-developer of talks:

Dear TALKS community,

It is with great sadness that I have to bring you the following news:

Torsten Brand, the inventor of TALKS as well as a long-time pioneer in the
Assistive Technology field, has died last night in hospital in Göttingen,
Germany, as a result of complications from a routine operation, at the age
of 47.

All of us here at Nuance are deeply shocked, and still unable to completely
grasp the significance of this terrible and unexpected event.

Many of you have met him personally, some as recently as two weeks ago
during CSUN in San Diego, and most will probably remember him as both a
clear-thinking visionary as well as an immensely likeable fellow, with tons
of ideas and a great "can-do" spirit. It is difficult to imagine life
without his friendship, inspiration and perseverance.

Even though TALKS will not be the same without his leadership, we will treat
it as a lasting part of his legacy, and continue developing it in his
spirit.

Torsten leaves his wife, Corinna, and his four children. Our thoughts go out
to his family in this difficult time.

Regards,

Marcus Groeber

2010-04-15 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
I wholeheartedly endorse the development, only thing is the magazine is quite
costly.
Any leads in India?!!!
To reiterate my stand, I do not tie accessibility with legality, and disability
with any obligation to be ultra-moral.
The reason for posting this message here after the storm that blew last year
over the issue, is that AI is discussing accessibility, so I do opine that it
should take broad and wide perspective of accessibility.
However, any further discussion on this must be subject to moderator's Approval
or otherwise,

"This is a socially responsible corporate move to facilitate marriages

Nearly one lakh people tie the knot every year through Bharat Matrimony.
Till now, nearly 20 lakh people have got married through the website,

Subject: [AI] some features of Windows 7

CARRIE-ANN SKINNER shows how to get the benefits of Win 7 in Vista and
XP, and

gives Media Center a TV make-over

MEDIA SPOTLIGHT

Windows 7 was certainly highly anticipated. Vista was never the easiest
operating system (OS) to use and, with its many quirky functions and
features -

not to mention slow booting times - PC users have been crying out for an
alternative for years.

Now that Microsoft has finally delivered, we're thoroughly impressed with
Windows 7, from its sleek interface to its swift operation.

But if you haven't got the spare cash to buy the new OS, consider instead
one of
the free or cheap apps available online that can speed up boot times for
Windows

XP and Vista. We look at simple tweaks, upgrades and downloads overleaf.

Another feature of Windows 7 that has been subtly improved is Windows
Media
Center. It now offers better playback options and support for more media
types.
However, it remains most useful if you've got a digital tuner in your PC
and use

it to record TV shows. You can even watch Sky TV.

Committed telly addicts will find, however, that Media Center recordings
munch
through storage space at an alarming rate. Thankfully, there are ways to
reduce
the amount of space assigned to the program. Alternatively, you can
expand your

storage and record as much as you like.

Here we look at ways to get the best from Media Center in Windows 7 and
Vista,
as well as exploring ways to enjoy Windows 7 features without going to
the

expense of upgrading.

OPTIMISE WINDOWS MEDIA CENTER FOR TV

Windows Media Center is the must-have software if you have a TV tuner in
your PC

- you can use it in place of a personal video recorder (PVR), recording
television programmes or whole series to watch later.

There's just one problem: it can consume almost your entire hard drive.

For example, suppose you configure Media Center to record 'EastEnders'
and 'The
X Factor'. By default, the program records an unlimited number of
episodes,
regardless of whether some are repeats or it's on every day for years.
If you
leave it a while before sitting down to watch your shows (that's what a
PVR is

for, after all), you may find your hard drive is full up.

Get strict about storage...

To ensure you've got enough disk space for actual computing, limit the
amount of
space Media Center can claim. Open Windows Media Center, scroll down to
Tasks,

Settings and press Enter.

Now choose Recorder, then Recorder Storage. (Note that these options
appear
only if you have a TV tuner installed and configured.) Use the minus icon
next
to 'Maximum TV limit' to decrease the storage (in 25GB increments) to the
amount

you want to allow Media Center. Click Save.

...or just boost your capacity

On the other hand, if your PC doubles as your home-entertainment system,
then
you may want to consider giving your PC more storage capacity. As with
any PC

that needs more space, there are two basic options.

First, you can replace the existing hard drive with something larger.
This is a
fairly major job, what with copying everything to the new drive, making
the swap

and so on.

Alternatively, you can install a second drive that works in tandem with
the
original. Ideally this would be an internal drive, but you'll need a
free bay -
the path of least resistance is to plump for an external USB hard drive.
The

main requirements are that it's quick (at least 5,400rpm) and quiet.

Fortunately, drives such as this are easy to come by and reasonably
priced. At
sites such as amazon.co.uk and dabs.com you'll find a terabyte (1TB) USB
drive

costs around ukp65 inc VAT.

Switching Windows Media Center over to the new drive is literally a
plug-and-play affair (in Vista, anyway). After you've plugged it in and
verified that it's available to the system, use the same steps as before
to

access the storage options menu.

Launch Windows Media Center and check you're not currently recording
anything.
Scroll down to Tasks, then click Settings. Choose Recorder, then
Recorder

Storage.

As before, these options appear only if you have a TV tuner installed and
configured.

Use the plus sign next to 'Record on drive' to select your newly added
external

drive. Click Save to finish the operation.

From now on, all shows will be recorded on the new drive. But you'll
still be
able to access previously recorded shows, even though they're on the
primary

drive.

The only thing you can't do is get Media Center to us

[AI] Mobile botnets show their disruptive potential

Mobile botnets show their disruptive potential
Researchers demonstrate how a small number of infected phones
could be used to attack a mobile network, making it impossible
for most users to make calls or send texts

by MacGregor Campbell

DENIAL-of-services (DoS) attacks are a common tactic used by "black
hats" intent on bringing down a high-profile website, one owned by a
bank or political party, say. But what if these hackers now have
cellphone networks in their sights?

In a standard DoS attack, a network of infected PCs, a "botnet", would
swamp a server with so many requests to view a web page that it would
be unable to handle legitimate requests. Now Patrick Traynor of the
Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta and colleagues have shown
how a cellphone network could be the vehicle for an attack that would
cut off calls for millions of users.

Traynor and his team used software that simulates a cellular network's
Home Location Register (HLR) - a massive database that stores the
details of every SIM card an operator issues and would typically
contain details on up to 5 million subscribers. Traynor found that a
botnet of fewer than 12,000 infected cellphones could disrupt 93 per
cent of traffic - voice calls and SMS messages - to a hypothetical HLR
of 1 million subscribers. In a real-life attack the owners of infected
handsets would be unaware that their phone was part of a botnot.

"Phones have evolved so quickly - we've gone from just the ability to
make phone calls to many of the things that desktop computers can do,"
says Traynor. "As utility comes to this platform, we have to expect
that malicious behaviour is going to follow pretty quickly."

Indeed, the first phone botnet is believed to have been assembled
earlier this year after an SMS worm called "Sexy Space" cascaded
across cellphone networks. Users who clicked on a link in the message
had software installed on their handset that was capable of
communicating with a central server, making it possible for their
phone to be controlled remotely by a third party.
The first phone botnet was assembled earlier this year after an SMS
worm hit cellphone networks

"These threats are certainly feasible. Whether they will be
implemented by an attacker remains to be seen," says Zulfikar Ramzan
of network security company Symantec. Ramzan points out that while
smartphones are powerful, they are still not as attractive a target as
PCs, which can be hijacked to send large amounts of spam or host
malicious websites. He argues that while a mobile botnet might be used
to bring down part of a cellular network, it's not clear how
profitable such an attack would be.

[AI] Computers top poll of modern discoveries

2010-04-15 Thread Sanjay

The microprocessor has been voted the greatest innovation of

the
past 50 years. Rightly so, says Federico Faggin

by Federico Faggin

TWO inventions have shaped our modern world more than any other: the
engine and the computer. Where the engine captured and extended the
human capacity to do physical work, the computer did the same for the
capacity of the human brain to think, organise and control. This power
has now pervaded not just homes and offices but also tens of thousands
of products where it once didn't seem to fit, thanks to a small and
beautiful device called the microprocessor.

Early computers were huge machines constructed from heterogeneous
technologies and were very costly and wasteful of energy. Fifty years
ago, a computer was an end in itself - it was inconceivable to put a
computer inside, say, a toy or an electric toothbrush.

Semiconductor technology changed all that. Semiconductors made it
possible to shrink computing components down to previously
unimaginable sizes, enabling the invention of the microprocessor. This
extended the idea of what a computer could be and provided a
conceptual framework for delivering the immense power of computing
technology into practical components that could be manufactured in
volume, and therefore at low cost.

The microprocessor led naturally to the microcontroller, an entire
computer on a single integrated circuit: very small, inexpensive and
energy efficient. Today there is no industry and no human endeavour
that hasn't been touched by microprocessors or microcontrollers.

Microprocessors and semiconductor technology are co-evolving, one
feeding the other in a cycle of growth limited only by the "food"
supply - the ability to make ever smaller transistors. This process is
not only delivering ever smaller, faster and cheaper microprocessors,
but also adding capabilities such as sensors and motors. We can now
routinely make digital video and still cameras smaller than a grain of
rice, optics included, costing less than a dollar. As time goes on, we
will be able to mass-produce ever more complex and complete systems.

We are fascinated with creating machines built in our image. The
microprocessor is arguably the greatest of them all.

The greatest discovery of the past 50 years
We invited computing pioneer Federico Faggin to write this piece to
celebrate the microprocessor's victory in a poll to find the discovery
that has had the greatest impact on the world in the past 50 years.

To mark the lauch of the website ImpactWorld! we teamed up with
the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), one of
the UK government's main science funding agencies. The EPSRC came up
with a list of 10 discoveries and nominated an eminent scientist to
make the case for each one.

The discoveries were: the mobile phone; space exploration; magnetic
resonance imaging; the World Wide Web; the global optical fibre
network; error-correcting codes; lasers; public key encryption; green
chemistry; and the microprocessor.

The microprocessor won hands down with 48 per cent of the vote,
followed by the World Wide Web (31 per cent). Everything else was
languishing in single figures.

[AI] The 64bit question

2010-04-15 Thread Sanjay

Should you go for the 32bit or 64bit version of Windows 7?

Ian Paul explains the pros and cons

If you've decided to buy a new PC and you've settled on a Windows 7 system,
you face one more big decision: whether to install the 32-or 64bit version. And
it's a trickier question than you'd think.

You might want to get the 64bit version so you can load up on RAM and
future-proof your PC. But software and hardware designers are still catching
up. Even with your beefy hardware and shiny new operating system (OS), you
might end up having a 32bit computing experience anyway.

The difference between 32-and 64bit systems comes down to this: 64bit machines
can handle more RAM and more data. That's it. Both versions of Windows look
the same; it's just a matter of how much data these systems can handle at
once.

A 64bit system can handle more than 4GB of memory - the maximum for 32bit
machines - and can also process more pieces of data at once. For the average
home PC user, the most significant advantage is being able to enjoy better
graphics, since a 64bit system can process more visual detail than a 32bit
machine.

Coming to terms with 64bit

Even though 64bit Windows systems were first introduced with XP and then given a
push under Vista, parts of the computing world are still getting to grips with
the 64bit reality. During the Vista years, most Windows users were still
running the 32bit version of XP. As a result, software designers remained
focused on these customers and didn't pay much attention to what was possible
with 64bit Vista systems. An example is Real's popular RealPlayer, which only
recently released a 64bit-compatible version.

Although you may have a tough time finding applications primed for 64bit
systems, it's rare to come across software that won't work with the more
powerful version of Windows. As a general rule, 32bit versions of software will
work on a 64bit system. But that defeats the purpose of upgrading, doesn't
it?

If you're not sure whether your favourite software will work on a 64bit
system, find out at Microsoft's Windows 7 Compatibility Center (
bit.ly/3yzy7B).

It's a 32bit web

The most obvious example of a 64bit Windows user living in a 32bit world is
online. Windows users can get a 64bit version of Internet Explorer, but if you
use Chrome, Firefox or Opera, then you're going to have to put up with 32bit.

In fact, if you're a dedicated Firefox user, you may want to think twice
before making the 64bit switch. Although Firefox is supposed to work on a 64bit
system, some Firefox users say they have had to resort to Windows 7's XP mode
just to get Firefox to open, while others could only run the browser in Windows
7 if they were logged in as an administrator.

But even if you're an Internet Explorer fan and want to use the browser's
64bit version, there's one major problem. Adobe Flash - the browser plug-in
responsible for most online video and animation - doesn't have a 64bit
version for Windows.

Since Adobe Flash is present on almost every site you visit, using a 64bit
browser means you'd be dealing with severely crippled if not unusable internet
access.

The alternative is to use the 32bit version instead, and wait for Adobe to come
out with its 64bit plug-in. But you might be waiting a long while, since Adobe
has only one version of 64bit Flash in development and it's for Linux. The
firm has said it's committed to bringing 64bit versions of Flash to both
Windows and Mac platforms, however.

Despite these promises, some users aren't too impressed with living in a 32bit
world. One recent 64bit adopter told us: "The fact that my 64bit Internet
Explorer doesn't work 100 percent is pathetic. I do understand it's an
issue with Adobe Flash, but if I wanted to use a crippled browser, I'd use my
iPhone."

Peripheral problems

In addition to software, you may find that some of your peripheral devices no
longer work with a 64bit system. If, for example, you're using an XP-era
printer or scanner, it's a pretty safe bet that your device won't be
64bit-compatible. Check out your device manufacturer's support pages to see
if the company offers a 64bit device driver. If it doesn't, you'll finally
have to shell out for that new printer you've had your eye on.

Things might be a little rough for 64bit Windows users right now, but you
shouldn't be left out in the cold forever. Bit by bit, the rest of the
computing world is moving to 64bit systems. Apple's Mac line-up is already
there, and Linux is also forging ahead with 64bit architecture. As more people
move towards the 64bit version of Windows, hold-outs in the software world will
also start making the switch. It's just that, unfortunately for early
adopters, we're not there yet.

[AI] Fat fingers can become dainty for touch screens

2010-04-15 Thread Sanjay
Touch-screen devices could be smaller if they could read how you
  use your fingers

by Colin Barras

Why are the latest touch-screen devices often larger than the
push-button gadgets they replace? It has long been assumed the culprit
is the so-called "fat finger" problem - when touch targets are packed
too close together, a fingertip may be too wide to hit the right one.

But the real reasons for touch-screen mishits are finger orientation
and variation between users, suggests a study by Christian Holz and
Patrick Baudisch at the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam,
Germany. More importantly, they can be corrected.

The fat finger problem is the main reason why icons on hand-held
touch-screen devices are generally around 10 millimetres across. In
recent years numerous ways around the problem have been explored,
including the combination of a touch screen with a touch-sensitive
pad on the rear of the device Movie Camera .

To get a handle on the problem, Holz and Baudisch asked 12 volunteers
to repeatedly touch a target on a touch screen, but to do so with
their finger held at a specific angle - defined by the
three-dimensional axes of pitch, roll and yaw.

Tight spots
They found that the touch screen registered distinct clusters of touch
points for different finger orientations. In some cases those distinct
clusters were just 2 to 3 millimetres across.

"Touch input is very precise for a specific roll, pitch and yaw," says
Baudisch. That precision has gone unappreciated because each precise
cluster is located at a slightly different region beneath the finger
"so those many small distributions together make a big mess."

The pair reasoned that if the touch-screen device "knew" the
orientation of the finger as it touched the screen, it should be
possible to define much smaller targets on the screen than previously
thought possible.

Print 'em
Holz and Baudisch asked another 12 volunteers to conduct a similar
experiment, but this time they used an eight-camera rig to accurately
capture the precise orientation of the finger on the screen. By
enabling their system to take that information into account they
tripled the precision of the touch interaction.

Fingerprints can reveal finger orientation, so the researchers adapted
a type of fingerprint scanner used at international borders to see if
their system could work without cameras.

Their system - dubbed Ridgepad - finds the centre of the fingerprint
for each touch on a screen, and compares it with a database to
calculate the finger's orientation. Applying the cluster region
associated with a specific orientation gave the system twice as much
accuracy as traditional touch technology, says Baudisch.

At present, however, the fingerprint scanner technology could not be
built into portable devices such as phones because its components are
too big.

"This work clearly helps to provide some guidance as to how to improve
selection accuracy with touch devices," says Daniel Wigdor at
Microsoft Research in Redmond, Washington.

Andrew Wilson, also at Microsoft Research, agrees, but notes that
optical fingerprint scanning technology isn't compatible with thin
touch-screen devices. "[The success of this] would depend on whether
we can develop thin and cheap touch sensors with the fidelity
necessary to pick up fingerprints," he says.

[AI] How to instal windows 7 on a netbook

2010-04-15 Thread Sanjay

You can install Windows 7 on a netbook by booting from an external DVD drive,
since these mini laptops lack an internal one. But it's cheaper to use a 4GB
USB drive. This will also be quicker and more convenient.

Even with Microsoft's brand-new USB/DVD Download Tool ( bit.ly/lq2tc), you can't
just copy the contents of your Windows 7 DVD on to the USB drive and boot from
it. Before you even think about copying Windows 7 to the USB drive, you must
give it an active partition and make it bootable. Since many people will be
upgrading to Windows 7 from XP, we'll use this scenario and prepare a USB drive
on an XP-equipped PC.

Note that because Windows 7 can't be installed as an upgrade over XP, you'll
need to use the 'Custom' installation option. This means all your programs and
data will be lost. Be sure to back up all your data, programs, email and
configuration settings first.

Format the USB drive

Because Windows XP sees a USB drive as a removable device, the Disk Management
console won't let you partition it, nor make a partition active - that option
will be greyed out. It won't even let you format it using the NTFS file system.

The easiest way to format the USB drive and give it an active partition is to
use HP's USB Disk Storage Format Tool (download it from bit.ly/3eet6x). This
can format your USB drive using the NTFS file system, and it also automatically
makes the formatted NTFS partition an active one.

To use it, simply select your USB drive from the Device list, change the File
system to NTFS, select Quick Format and click Start. The whole process will
take seconds.

Confirm the format

To confirm that your USB drive has been correctly formatted, right-click My
Computer, click Manage and then Disk Management. Your USB drive should now be
listed with a 'Healthy (Active)' status, and it should say NTFS next to the
capacity.

Before we formatted the USB drive with HP's tool, the status simply read
'Healthy' and the file format was FAT32.

Make the drive bootable

Now the drive has an active NTFS partition, it's time to make it bootable.
You'll need a Windows 7 DVD, and you'll have to get your hands dirty in the
Command Prompt.

Windows 7 uses a loading program called Bootmgr. The active partition on the
USB drive needs to have code written to its boot sector that is compatible with
Bootmgr. This code can be written to the USB drive by using the bootsect.exe
program that is present in the Boot folder of the Windows 7 DVD. To extract
this code, we have to use the Command Prompt. From the Start menu select Run,
type cmd and press Enter.

Once the Command Prompt is open, switch to your Windows 7 DVD by typing the
drive letter for your DVD drive (usually D). Then you must type the following
line: boot\bootsect /nt60 j:

In this line, we are telling bootsect to use the /nt60 command to write the
compatible boot code to our USB drive, which is the J drive. Substitute the
letter of your own USB drive for j: in our example.

Copy Windows 7 to the USB drive

Now that the USB drive is prepared, all that remains is to copy the contents of
your Windows 7 DVD to it.

The root folder of the Windows 7 32bit DVD contains five folders and three
files, and the entire contents takes up 2.32GB. This will take approximately 7
mins to copy, depending on the speed of your computer and the USB drive.

Change your boot device

In order to install Windows 7, your netbook will need to boot from your USB key,
rather than its hard drive. To change this, you need to enter the Bios and
alter the boot settings. This procedure varies depending on the make and model
of the netbook. To get into the Bios you'll have to press either Del or one of
the Fn buttons. Look for a message onscreen when you first switch on the

Windows XP restricts your partitioning options for removable devices - those
options will be GREYED OUT netbook. There will be an indication of which key or
key combination you should press in order to enter the Bios.

Plug in your USB drive and switch on the netbook. Once in the Bios, go to the
Boot menu and look for the Boot Device Priority' setting. Change the '1st Boot
Device' option to USB. On some netbooks (such as the MSI Wind we used for this
workshop), it may even give you the name of your USB drive.

Once you've changed the boot device, save your changes and exit the Bios. The
netbook will now load from the USB drive and proceed to install Windows 7. When
the installation reaches the point where it restarts the system, be sure to
remove the USB drive, otherwise the netbook will boot from the USB drive and
restart the installation.

TIPS & TRICKS

Dual-booting Windows

If you've decided to make the move to Windows 7 but aren't convinced you'll be
sticking with it, or are concerned about possible program compatibility issues,
a dual-boot option is probably wisest. (Note, however, that Microsoft has done
far more than it did when Vista launched to ensure program compatibility, a

[AI] some features of Windows 7

2010-04-15 Thread Sanjay

CARRIE-ANN SKINNER shows how to get the benefits of Win 7 in Vista and XP, and
gives Media Center a TV make-over

MEDIA SPOTLIGHT

Windows 7 was certainly highly anticipated. Vista was never the easiest
operating system (OS) to use and, with its many quirky functions and features -
not to mention slow booting times - PC users have been crying out for an
alternative for years.

Now that Microsoft has finally delivered, we're thoroughly impressed with
Windows 7, from its sleek interface to its swift operation.

But if you haven't got the spare cash to buy the new OS, consider instead one of
the free or cheap apps available online that can speed up boot times for Windows
XP and Vista. We look at simple tweaks, upgrades and downloads overleaf.

Another feature of Windows 7 that has been subtly improved is Windows Media
Center. It now offers better playback options and support for more media types.
However, it remains most useful if you've got a digital tuner in your PC and use
it to record TV shows. You can even watch Sky TV.

Committed telly addicts will find, however, that Media Center recordings munch
through storage space at an alarming rate. Thankfully, there are ways to reduce
the amount of space assigned to the program. Alternatively, you can expand your
storage and record as much as you like.

Here we look at ways to get the best from Media Center in Windows 7 and Vista,
as well as exploring ways to enjoy Windows 7 features without going to the
expense of upgrading.

OPTIMISE WINDOWS MEDIA CENTER FOR TV

Windows Media Center is the must-have software if you have a TV tuner in your PC
- you can use it in place of a personal video recorder (PVR), recording
television programmes or whole series to watch later.

There's just one problem: it can consume almost your entire hard drive.

For example, suppose you configure Media Center to record 'EastEnders' and 'The
X Factor'. By default, the program records an unlimited number of episodes,
regardless of whether some are repeats or it's on every day for years. If you
leave it a while before sitting down to watch your shows (that's what a PVR is
for, after all), you may find your hard drive is full up.

Get strict about storage...

To ensure you've got enough disk space for actual computing, limit the amount of
space Media Center can claim. Open Windows Media Center, scroll down to Tasks,
Settings and press Enter.

Now choose Recorder, then Recorder Storage. (Note that these options appear
only if you have a TV tuner installed and configured.) Use the minus icon next
to 'Maximum TV limit' to decrease the storage (in 25GB increments) to the amount
you want to allow Media Center. Click Save.

...or just boost your capacity

On the other hand, if your PC doubles as your home-entertainment system, then
you may want to consider giving your PC more storage capacity. As with any PC
that needs more space, there are two basic options.

First, you can replace the existing hard drive with something larger. This is a
fairly major job, what with copying everything to the new drive, making the swap
and so on.

Alternatively, you can install a second drive that works in tandem with the
original. Ideally this would be an internal drive, but you'll need a free bay -
the path of least resistance is to plump for an external USB hard drive. The
main requirements are that it's quick (at least 5,400rpm) and quiet.

Fortunately, drives such as this are easy to come by and reasonably priced. At
sites such as amazon.co.uk and dabs.com you'll find a terabyte (1TB) USB drive
costs around ukp65 inc VAT.

Switching Windows Media Center over to the new drive is literally a
plug-and-play affair (in Vista, anyway). After you've plugged it in and
verified that it's available to the system, use the same steps as before to
access the storage options menu.

Launch Windows Media Center and check you're not currently recording anything.
Scroll down to Tasks, then click Settings. Choose Recorder, then Recorder
Storage.

As before, these options appear only if you have a TV tuner installed and
configured.

Use the plus sign next to 'Record on drive' to select your newly added external
drive. Click Save to finish the operation.

>From now on, all shows will be recorded on the new drive. But you'll still be
able to access previously recorded shows, even though they're on the primary
drive.

The only thing you can't do is get Media Center to use both drives for
recording; it's one or the other. Of course, if the new drive starts to get
full, you can always switch back temporarily. Just follow the steps outlined
above and choose your C drive.

For Windows 7 users the process is pretty much the same. Although it's worth
noting that if the Recorder option isn't available in the Settings menu, your PC
probably doesn't have a TV tuner. However, USB TV tuners are available pretty
cheaply.

There's one final option: you can use an iPhone or Xbox 360 as an extension of
your Media C

 Medibots: The world's smallest surgeons

No more scalpels - tomorrow's lifesaving operations will use
robots that crawl over your heart, scuttle into your ear and

swim
  into your eye

by Gaia Vince and Clare Wilson

Editorial: Getting to the heart of robotic surgery
A MAN lies comatose on an operating table. The enormous spider that
hangs above him has plunged four appendages into his belly. The
spider, made of white steel, probes around inside the man's abdomen
then withdraws one of its arms. Held in the machine's claw is a neatly
sealed bag containing a scrap of bloody tissue.

This is a da Vinci robot. It has allowed a surgeon, sitting at a
control desk, to remove the patient's prostate gland in a manner that
has several advantages over conventional methods. Yet the future of
robotic surgery may lie not only with these hulking beasts but also
with devices at the other end of the size spectrum. The surgeons of
tomorrow will include tiny robots that enter our bodies and do their
work from the inside, with no need to open patients up or knock them
out. While nanobots that swim through the blood are still in the realm
of fantasy, several groups are developing devices a few millimetres in
size. The first generation of "mini-medibots" may infiltrate our
bodies through our ears, eyes and lungs, to deliver drugs, take tissue
samples or install medical devices.

The engineering challenges are formidable, including developing new
methods of propulsion and power supply. Nevertheless, the first
prototypes are already being tested in animals and could move into
tests on people in the not-too-distant future. "It's not impossible to
think of this happening in five years," says Brad Nelson, a roboticist
at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EHT) in Zurich. "I'm
convinced it's going to get there."

It was the 1970s that saw the arrival of minimally invasive surgery -
or keyhole surgery as it is also known. Instead of cutting open the
body with large incisions, surgical tools are inserted through holes
as small as 1 centimetre in diameter and controlled with external
handles. Operations from stomach bypass to gall bladder removal are
now done this way, reducing blood loss, pain and recovery time.

Combining keyhole surgery with the da Vinci system means the surgeon
no longer handles the instruments directly, but via a computer
console. This allows greater precision, as large hand gestures can be
scaled down to small instrument movements, and any hand tremor is
eliminated. There are over 1000 da Vincis being used in clinics around
the world.

Heart crawler
There are several ways that such robotic surgery may be further
enhanced. Various articulated, snake-like tools are being developed to
access hard-to-reach areas. One such device, the "i-Snake", is
controlled by a vision-tracking device worn over the surgeon's eyes
(New Scientist, 20 September 2008, p 21). It should be ready for
testing on patients within four years, says developer Guang-Zhong
Yang, a roboticist at Imperial College London.

With further advances in miniaturisation, the opportunities grow for
getting medical devices inside the body in novel ways. One miniature
device that is already tried and tested is a camera in a capsule small
enough to be swallowed.

In conventional endoscopy, a camera on the end of a flexible tube is
inserted either through the mouth or the rectum, but this does not
allow it to reach the middle part of the gut. The 25-millimetre-long
capsule camera, on the other hand, can observe the entire gut on its
journey. More sophisticated versions are being developed that can also
release drugs and take samples.

The capsule camera has no need to propel itself because it is pushed
along by the normal muscle contractions of the gut. For devices used
elsewhere in the body, some of the key challenges are developing new
mechanisms for propulsion and power supply on a miniature scale.

One solution is to have wires connecting the robot to a control unit
that remains on the outside of the body. This is the case for a robot
being developed for heart surgery, called HeartLander.

Operating on the heart has always presented enormous challenges, says
Marco Zenati, a heart surgeon at the University of Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, who is one of the device's inventors. Conventionally the
heart is stopped and the patient hooked up to a heart-lung machine. A
more recent approach is to perform keyhole surgery on the beating
heart, but even so several incisions must be made, and the left lung
must be partly deflated to allow access, requiring a general
anaesthetic.

The HeartLander robot is designed to be delivered to the heart through
a single keyhole incision, from where it can crawl to the right spot.
The heart does not have to be stopped, and the left lung need not be
deflated, so the patient could be breathing naturally, with just a
local anaesthetic. "Coronary surgery can become an outpatient
procedure," says Cameron
