[AI] Accessing DVD menu on computer?

2010-04-26 Thread Amar Jain
Friends
I just now played the dvd of MNIK on laptop, I am using windows media player 12
which comes with windows 7.
There some song started something aasma or something, and I have few options,
like volume, mute, stop, previous, dvd menu and dvd menu options.
Clicking on dvd menu options brings another context menu, which has got
following options:
root menu,
title menu,
exit full screen,
special features submenu in which there is audio submenu, under which english
uS is given and defaults dialog is given. That dialog is for changing the
language.
I changed it to Hindi, but again when I saw that menu it was english US only.
I am unable to access dvd menu, because pressing enter or space bar one and the
same thing on dvd menu brings nothing.
tabbing also bring no extra options.
as per RNIB site, we have to enable audio in order to listen audio described
movie.
on tv I know that we have to choose from dvd menu, but how to do the same on
computer.
jaws cursor reads blank in this window.
looking in the folder also does not give me any special file.
I also tried accessing dvd menu with narrator but windows 7 narrator is
pathetic.
I have no sighted assistance available at this time, mom is in kitchen, dad is
not at home. and mom is not going to come at least at this time.
if any one any one know about this just drop me an email or just give me mis
call I will call but tell me how to do this...
I hope this dvd will have audio description. because otherwise there would have
been no audio submenu in special features submenu both I have seen for the
first time.
awaiting earliest reply.
amar jain.

Re: [AI] Disclosing disability in CV

2010-04-26 Thread harish

Hi
To add to the discussion, you can also enlist contact info of a few blind
persons who could be reffered with a brief description of the work profile.
Pl do take care in, first, seeking confirmation from the persons reffered
and that they are also persuing an occupation similar to the job in
question.

This will help in easing the concerns and apprehensiveness in their mind.

Hi,

I second Subramani sir's opinion.

Besides, exposing our disability before the employer is inevitable.
And by hiding it in the CV, we are only postponing the inevitable.

When we mention about our disability in the CV, we should make sure
that we also mention the coping strategies like mobility, assistive
technology etc. And also, as we know the job we are going to do, we
should write how we think we are fit for handling that particular job
despite the disability.

Leave the standard format of CV and customise it to each and every
job applied for.

Since in some cases you may be the first disabled ccandidate to be

Hiding it is hardly going to help you, so mention it voluntarily and

Subject: [AI] Disclosing disability in CV

Dear Friends,

We recently had a discussion on whether we should disclose our
disability
during the ongoing national census. I wish to know the members'
viewpoints
on disclosure of disability in job interviews in cases where there is no

reservation.

I seek the members' views on the following queries.

1.. Whether we should disclose our disability in the CV sent to
prospective employers, job consultants or posted on various job portals?
2.. In case we decide to disclose our disability in the CV, where
should
it be disclosed? Assuming the CV has 4 sections - General Information,
Educational record, work experience & salary details, where should the
disability be disclosed & in what manner?
3.. In case we are called for a job interview, should we check in
advance
whether the company will be willing to consider us inspite of our
disability? This query is more relevant in case we have not disclosed
our
disability in the CV since some blind friends who had not disclosed
their
blindness were refused permission even to appear for the interview when
they
reached the employer's office. Also, it has been observed that inspite
of
disclosing disability, interviewers tend to skip over the information &
they
are surprised when they realize the interviewee is blind.

Seeking the learned members views on the above queries.

Regards

Re: [AI] Fw: DVD of a Bollywood film with Audio Description in Hindi available worldwide for the first time.

I meant to ask about audio description which they said MNIK has.
Inbuilt narration is a part of many movies, but it hardly gives all the
details of visuals.

I have had an experience of watching this movie on cable ,mr khan is
narrating in the movie, the dialogue is quite clear to understand .
Only 2 places I had to ask what is happening .for those who can't hear
lip reading is clearly visible or which dialogue is not seen is shown
by action.
Very good script.

Re: [AI] Disclosing disability in CV

2010-04-26 Thread akhilesh
Hi mr. Sameer,
Undoubtedly you’ve raised an important issue, and it seems that we're
all agreeing on the fact that the disability should be disclosed.
However, as you've said, the interviewer tends to skip such
information, so it seems no use of mentioning your disability.
I personally think that it should be highlighted in such a way, that
it could attract the attention at 2nd or 3rd glance of your CV.
Asterisk it, bold it, but it should stand separate of cv’s format.
Thanks,
Akhilesh.

Friends
I am in urgent need of two dll files, namely:
DBGHELP.DLL
AND
RPCSS.DLL

I know they can be downloaded from net, but the site requires captcha
verification.
I do not have a reliable sighted assistance at hand.
So anybody who happens to have discerning sighted human around, or can do the
job with webvisum, would you please send in the two files by evening?

Ps: I was particularly put back by phraseology of the site while introducing
captcha: they said,
:"Are you human?"
then came the edit box.
Now, I am human, but require a human with sight, to do the need full.
So please if somebody could volunteer
I can not open the required sites from home, where such assistance is
available, as the said dll files are missing, and so the system is erratic.

last few days we should unanimously resolve here to provide all correct and
true informations about our disability in forth coming national senses and
in unified identity card format and spread a clear message to all of our
other friends to do the same. As many A.I. friends have expressed, the
inclusion of the informations regarding disability in senses will go a long
way for empowerment of our multimillion peers who have so for been

Right, but we cannot recommend hiding the disability as a solution. This
would only weaken your case. If you keep pushing your resume to
different people, you would have a chance of convincing one person and
that is all you need. If you don't get the job, at least you indirectly
educate the person/company on the fact that persons with disability have
the confidence to seek a job; you are proud as a disabled person and not
shamed by it. This is better than hiding and worrying about your
disability being discovered later.

[AI] CSR: For corporates, hiring the disabled makes business sense

2010-04-26 Thread Tushar Kansara
*For corporates, hiring the disabled makes business sense..Vimal
Chander Joshi*

Till a few years ago, hiring disabled people used to be a part of corporate
social responsibility (CSR), but now, companies view disabled people as
potential workforce.

Bangalore-based IT solutions company Mphasis Limited increased the number of
disabled employees eight-fold in less than a year.

“They are hired only on the basis of their skills, notwithstanding the
disability they are suffering from. A visually impaired person can easily
work in the voice-based process of our BPO division and a hearing impaired
employee is accommodated in the technical or back office project,” says Dr
Meenu Bhambhani, global head, CSR, Mphasis Ltd.

Ankit Jindal, a first-year student of Faculty of Management Studies, runs an
organisation called Diversity and Equal Opportunity Centre (DEOC) to help
disabled people take up jobs in the corporate world. The organisation ran a
project called Communicate wherein youngsters from the villages of Karnataka
and Tamil Nadu were selected for placement in Bangalore’s BPOs.

“In the first batch, we selected and trained 50 people, of whom 47 were
hired by different companies. So far, we have placed 90 people under that
project. A few got rejected, as we ensure that company’s don’t lower the
standard to accommodate a disabled person. We don’t believe in charity
models,” says Jindal, who suffers from visual impairment.

DEOC is a profit making organisation and not an NGO. For its clients, it
does research on recruitment, provides training and carries out building
audit of corporates to give them suggestions on recruitment of disabled
people.

“When we started three years ago, we aimed to start an organisation which
could help disabled people get jobs. Later we started making profits and
companies like Infosys, Wipro and IBM were keen to get their office
buildings audited. Post auditing, the infrastructure is modified to make it
disabled friendly,” said Jindal.

Companies are increasingly getting these audits done by expert agencies,
which recommend necessary changes to create an inclusive office environment.
National Centre for Accessible Environments (Samarthyam) is one such body.
Anjali Aggwarwal, executive director of Samarthyam, says: “We have received
positive response from many companies, especially the BPO sector where
disabled people are considered a valuable resource.”

Wipro encourages employees to declare the disability at the time of
recruitment so that right from the time of induction, adequate
infrastructure modifications can be made. “Diversity in all forms
(disability, gender or national) makes the company’s management diverse and
every time a decision is taken, inputs are received by the varied minds,”
says Issac George V, general manager, talent engagement and development,
Wipro Technologies.

I am in urgent need of two dll files, namely:
DBGHELP.DLL

I know they can be downloaded from net, but the site requires captcha
verification.

I do not have a reliable sighted assistance at hand.
So anybody who happens to have discerning sighted human around, or can do
the job with webvisum, would you please send in the two files by evening?

Ps: I was particularly put back by phraseology of the site while
introducing captcha: they said,

:"Are you human?"
then came the edit box.
Now, I am human, but require a human with sight, to do the need full.
So please if somebody could volunteer
I can not open the required sites from home, where such assistance is
available, as the said dll files are missing, and so the system is

I have had an experience of watching this movie on cable ,mr khan is
narrating in the movie, the dialogue is quite clear to understand .
Only 2 places I had to ask what is happening .for those who can’t hear
lip reading is clearly visible or which dialogue is not seen is shown
by action.
Very good script.

The Royal National Institute of Blind People's campaign for Audio
Description has resulted in several major distributors of Hollywood films
releasing their DVDs with an AD track in the UK. Now, for the first time,
the DVD of a Bollywood film with an AD track in Hindi will be made
available

across the world.

Eros International's VEER, a love story set in the historical context of
the

British rule in India has resulted in a modern day British-Indian
collaboration, making Veer the first Bollywood film to have an
audio-description (AD) track in Hindi on its DVD. UK-based Royal National
Institute of Blind People (RNIB) worked with Eros International to
achieve
this milestone after its research among blind or partially sighted people
of
Asian origin in the UK and India found that over 70 per cent of
respondents

were more likely to watch Bollywood films if AD in Hindi was provided.

Veer DVD hits stores worldwide on 24th April 2010.

Re: [AI] Fw: DVD of a Bollywood film with Audio Description in Hindi available worldwide for the first time.

2010-04-26 Thread Rai, Sonali

Hi all,

I normally don't post anything to this listing but I have been reading
all comments that have been put up regarding audio description on
Bollywood films and I feel compelled to reply to all the
queries/comments that have been taking the rounds. Let me start by
giving a brief introduction, I am the International Projects Development
Officer with the Media and Culture Department at RNIB and amongst other
initiatives, I am working on the access solution for Bollywood films
keeping in mind its blind and partially audiences in the UK.

We were quite glad that media across the world covered the launch of AD
on Bollywood films with such enthusiasm but what they failed to mention
in their coverage was that that the film 'My name is Khan' will be
available with audio description only in the UK cinemas and not anywhere
else.

All cinema prints of MNIK released in the UK were accompanied by AD.
Unfortunately, the prints released elsewhere in the world did not have
AD with it. The film company has not released a DVD of the film as yet
but the UK DVD release that is scheduled for June 12, 2010 is likely to
have the AD track on it. It is highly unlikely that the one that will
release in India or elsewhere in the world will have the AD track on
them.

I will try and explain why this happened: Audio description, very much
like subtitling, is provided and paid for by the distributor of a film.
In this case, the 20th Century Fox. But the distributor in India is Star
Fox and the UK distributor is 20th Century Fox International. Even
though the parent company is the same, they are completely separate
operating units with separate revenue streams. We managed to convince
the 20th Century Fox International, the UK distributor to describe
their Bollywood release like they describe all their Hollywood releases
and they did but the guys back in India were completely ignorant of the
request. Even now the film is soon going to be released on the DVD, it
is likely that the AD track will be available on the DVD released in the
UK but not on the DVD released in India. It's quite sad and even people
back at Dharma Productions have been as dismissive of the situation as
they can be. The only way that comes into my mind to tackle this issue
is by writing to them till the time they acknowledge that it is a
problem and are ready to do something about it. You can find their
contact details on this link:
http://www3.dharma-production.com/contactus.html. The more they hear
about it from people, the more convinced they are going to be about
adding AD.

At the same time, Eros International, another Bollywood distributor has
been great and are trying to work with us to make their films accessible
by adding AD. Their first release is VEER- the DVD of this film will be
available in India with AD. You should be able to walk into your Planet
M anytime and pick up a copy. VEER is the first one in the world to be
made available on the DVD so if you happen to watch it, please do send
us your feedback. We would be keen to hear what people have to say about
the new development.

And if you have any further questions, please do let not hesitate to
write to me.

We offer the following information, but caution that this is currently in beta.
Unfortunately, as with most software of this type, it's quite expensive. This
is all the information we currently have available.

A Smartphone that Sees For You

Software from LookTel on a Windows-based smartphone uses "augmented reality" to
help

the vision-impaired and elderly

This video

shows some of the ways the LookTel application can help people with visual and
other

handicaps.

A new set of software that works with relatively inexpensive smart phones could
help

visually disabled people and the elderly. Using a technology called "augmented
reality",

the software can help people by recognizing text, objects and places.

Augmented Reality, or AR, uses location and visual information from a camera to
supply

a smartphone user with extra information about their surroundings. For an
introduction

to AR, you can take a look at

my hands-on with Spyglass

, the augmented reality navigation application.

LookTel

takes AR technology and applies it to a very real problem. It was developed by

Ipplex

, in partnership with the National Institutes of Health, the National Eye
Institute,

the Department of Veterans Affairs and a research organization for aides for the

blind, to help people who can't see well or may become disoriented.

The Windows Mobile application uses character recognition technology and a voice

synthesizer to read labels to the smartphone user. All that processing can't be

done on the smartphone, so character and object recognition software are part of

LookTel's "base station" software, which runs on a Windows-based home computer.
You

can also add coded labels to objects , as this

YouTube demonstration

shows, and associate those labels with voice descriptions of objects you put
them

on.

The app also can connect a user to a real person for assistance by connecting
back

to the application's Windows PC-based "base station" software:

For more complicated visual tasks such as locating a specific street corner or
bus

stop, LookTel enables you to remotely connect to another person for assistance.
Not

only can you talk to them, but you can also transmit live video from the cell
phone's

camera so that they can see your surroundings and help you with orientation,
recognizing

objects and media, and more. Your position will also be shown to them on Google
Maps

using the GPS services available on smart phones. These services aim to help
users

to independently go about daily activities with the confidence that they will
have

the assistance they need anytime, anywhere.

LookTel is currently in testing, and is available on pre-configured HTC
smartphones

and mobile Internet devices. Ipplex hasn't published the pricing for the
technology,

but is offering it at a discount during testing.

Re: [AI] EXCEL FORMULA

2010-04-26 Thread Mukesh Baviskar

   Hello,
round off the figure in nearest rupee of 9.03 is 9 and not 10. Whenever The
figure after decimal is >50 it will round up the nearest figure which 9. You
may use the 'round' formula for this. For example:
=ROUND(a1,0) IN B1
If you want to change 9.03 to 10 use roundup formula as:
roundup(a1,0)in c1 you will get the answer 10 instead of 9
Try it and solve your problem. If you have any doubt contact me on my

Re: [AI] Disclosing disability in CV

2010-04-26 Thread Swati Sinha
In my opinion, one should mention his/her disability in the CV, because you
should always be clear in your part. Don't give chance to other to question
you.
Likewise also even if you mention your disability in your CV, no consultant
checks or has time to review your whole CV. So during your interview you
have to disclose your disability.
Regarding the interviewer rejecting your CV on your disability basis,
totally depends on his/her mentality.
I have mentioned my disability under the last section of Personal details in
my CV.

Dear Friends,

We recently had a discussion on whether we should disclose our disability
during the ongoing national census. I wish to know the members' viewpoints
on disclosure of disability in job interviews in cases where there is no
reservation.

I seek the members' views on the following queries.

1.. Whether we should disclose our disability in the CV sent to
prospective employers, job consultants or posted on various job portals?
2.. In case we decide to disclose our disability in the CV, where should
it be disclosed? Assuming the CV has 4 sections - General Information,
Educational record, work experience & salary details, where should the
disability be disclosed & in what manner?
3.. In case we are called for a job interview, should we check in advance
whether the company will be willing to consider us inspite of our
disability? This query is more relevant in case we have not disclosed our
disability in the CV since some blind friends who had not disclosed their
blindness were refused permission even to appear for the interview when
they reached the employer's office. Also, it has been observed that
inspite of disclosing disability, interviewers tend to skip over the
information & they are surprised when they realize the interviewee is
blind.

Seeking the learned members views on the above queries.

Re: [AI] Fw: DVD of a Bollywood film with Audio Description

2010-04-26 Thread Dr. Yogesh Sharma
Dear Access Indian friends, I feel Bhawani Bhai is absolutely right in his
opinion. To add to the discussion, I feel that films of 50s, 60s, 70s and even
to some extent those of 80s have been far more understandable without sight,
since they are based more on dialogues than on gestures and facial expression,
and music + an interesting storyline are some other + points of these golden
films. That is why the original versions of films like Umravjaan and Don etc.
have been far more successful and popular even in the sighted audiences as
compared to their remakes.
An other interesting fact for all of you! In Punjab, we have had a
grate VI film producer, director and visionary in the form of Late Mr. Ajeet
Sailani, who produced 2 successful Punjabi films, namely: Shaheed Kartaar Singh

[AI] please read it

2010-04-26 Thread surendra
Dear members of this group.

I want to suggest you that all of you must read this message. It may bring some
changes in your life.

Meditation. One of the most powerful techniques of bringing one's mind to rest,
of getting tuned to the universe, and of bringing out the complete potential of
the great human mind. Meditation is one of the most under-used techniques in
the world. It is something that everyone should be doing, and yet but a handful
do. What a pity!

Unfortunately it is so commonly related to 'spirituality', that people shy away
from it. Of those who don't, many tell me that they don't meditate because they
can't clear their mind of thoughts.

You don't have to be spiritual, to meditate. You don't have to have a complete
control of your mind to meditate. You just have to be human.

Meditation is the process of eliminating thoughts, not vice versa. Meditation
helps you get a better hold over the whims and fancies of your mind. In other
words, it helps you control your mind instead of your mind controlling you, as
is often the case.

So how can you maditate? There are several techniques. The most effective is to
simply stop thinking - or if you aren't able to do that, start 'observing' your
thoughts, as if it was someone else's mind and you were just an observer.
Eventually you will just stop thinking.

Another very powerful technique is to concentrate completely on your breath.
Don't control - just watch your breath. Focus all your senses on it, and think
of nothing else. Usually when you do this, you will find that your breath
slowly starts getting shorter and eventually comes to a stop. Here you will
reach a thoughtless state, which is very, very powerful.

A simpler technique is to imagine some object and think of nothing else. It
could be a flame, or your third eye, or anything else, for that matter. A
friend I knew, would imagine that she is running towards the sun forever. Yet
another method is to light up a candle and stare at it without blinking until
your eyes start watering. This is also a form of yoga, and you are so caught up
not trying to blink, that you simply cannot think of anything else.

If you are trying these techniques for meditation, I'd prefer that you start
from the first method and switch to the next if you find it tough, and so on.
Because the first technique is the most powerful, the next a little less, and
so on. Start from the first and move downwards, and see which one suits you
best.

Everyone who meditates encounters thoughts. So if you find yourself thinking
too much when you meditate, relax, it happens. Over a period of months, you'll
find it reducing, and eventually you'll be able to reach that thought-less
state much more easily.

round off the figure in nearest rupee of 9.03 is 9 and not 10. Whenever
The
figure after decimal is >50 it will round up the nearest figure which 9.
You

may use the 'round' formula for this. For example:
=ROUND(a1,0) IN B1
If you want to change 9.03 to 10 use roundup formula as:
roundup(a1,0)in c1 you will get the answer 10 instead of 9
Try it and solve your problem. If you have any doubt contact me on my

Nice one, friend.

At 01:29 PM 26-04-10, you wrote:

Meditation. One of the most powerful techniques of bringing one's

the complete potential of the great human mind. Meditation is one of
the most under-used techniques in the world. It is something that
everyone should be doing, and yet but a handful do. What a pity!

Unfortunately it is so commonly related to 'spirituality', that
people shy away from it. Of those who don't, many tell me that they
don't meditate because they can't clear their mind of thoughts.

You don't have to be spiritual, to meditate. You don't have to have
a complete control of your mind to meditate. You just have to be human.

Meditation is the process of eliminating thoughts, not vice versa.
Meditation helps you get a better hold over the whims and fancies of
your mind. In other words, it helps you control your mind instead of
your mind controlling you, as is often the case.

So how can you maditate? There are several techniques. The most
effective is to simply stop thinking - or if you aren't able to do
that, start 'observing' your thoughts, as if it was someone else's
mind and you were just an observer. Eventually you will just stop thinking.

Another very powerful technique is to concentrate completely on your
breath. Don't control - just watch your breath. Focus all your
senses on it, and think of nothing else. Usually when you do this,
you will find that your breath slowly starts getting shorter and
eventually comes to a stop. Here you will reach a thoughtless state,
which is very, very powerful.

A simpler technique is to imagine some object and think of nothing
else. It could be a flame, or your third eye, or anything else, for
that matter. A friend I knew, would imagine that she is running
towards the sun forever. Yet another method is to light up a candle
and stare at it without blinking until your eyes start watering.
This is also a form of yoga, and you are so caught up not trying to
blink, that you simply cannot think of anything else.

If you are trying these techniques for meditation, I'd prefer that
you start from the first method and switch to the next if you find
it tough, and so on. Because the first technique is the most
powerful, the next a little less, and so on. Start from the first
and move downwards, and see which one suits you best.

Everyone who meditates encounters thoughts. So if you find yourself
thinking too much when you meditate, relax, it happens. Over a
period of months, you'll find it reducing, and eventually you'll be

Re: [AI] EXCEL FORMULA

2010-04-26 Thread Zujar Shabbir Kanchwala
Using formula you can convert 9.03 to 10 like this:

=ceiling(9.03,1)

The CEILING() function calculates the next multiple of a number after a
given number. The syntax is:

=CEILING(number,significance)

Where number is the base number which you want to round off.

And

Significance is the multiple to consider. Specifying 1 here gives you the
next non decimal number if the first argument is a decimal number.

Examples:

=ceiling(10.5,2) gives 12 (the next multiple of 2 after 10.5)

=ceiling(22,11) gives 22. (22 itself is a multiple of 11)

=ceiling(6.15, 4.02) gives 8.04

Hope that's clear...

Best Regards,
Zujar...

[AI] UID gets a new name

2010-04-26 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
TOI:
NEW DELHI: Government's ambitious UID project was on renamed 'Aadhaar' and its
new logo unveiled with chairman Nandan Nilekani underscoring that the scheme
would lay the foundation for effectively delivering services especially to the
poor.

Nilekani, chairman of Unique Identification Authority of India, said Aadhaar
translates into a 'foundation' or 'support' and the project, aiming to give a
16-digit number to all citizens of the country starting from February next
year, will now be known by the new name.

"We wanted a name that could effectively communicate its transformational
potential and its promise to residents. Something that had a national appeal,
that could be recognised across the country, could resonate in different
languages and easy to remember and speak," he told reporters, adding the
acronym UID was confusing.

Nilekani, who was addressing a seminar organised by the UIDAI here, said the
same standard was also set for making of the logo, which shows a sun in yellow
and a fingerprint in the centre, and has been created by a Mumbai resident.

The logo, selected after a nationwide competition, was unveiled by Dhaneshwar
Ram, a farmer from Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh who was invited by the UIDAI to
speak on the hardships faced by the common man in getting an identity proof.

Re: [AI] UID gets a new name

2010-04-26 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
I wonder then why they can not include disability after proper verification in
UID.

And one more thing:
This whole exercise of counting households first, filling form for National
population register then, and then doing the actual census in February, reminds
me of an anecdote about intellectuals where asked to count the cows grazing in
Pasteur, they counted their feet and then set about dividing the number by
four for arriving at the precise number of cows.
I wonder why the entire exercise cannot be done in a single spell, instead of
undertaking the mammoth task again and again!

Subject: [AI] UID gets a new name

[AI] Q AND A

2010-04-26 Thread Sanjay

SMALL-SCREEN DRAMA

Q At startup my laptop displays the minimum screen resolution. I can correct
this via the Control Panel, but I have to go through the same routine after
every restart. Is there a way to force the machine to remember my preferred
settings? Gerry Watson

Either the graphics driver isn't properly installed, or Windows doesn't know
what type of display it's outputting to and isn't setting the resolution
correctly.

To check whether your laptop has the correct display drivers installed,
right-click anywhere on your desktop and choose Properties in XP or Screen
Resolution Advanced in Vista and Windows 7. You should see your graphics
adaptor listed by name. Note its details, then download and install the latest
drivers for your adaptor from the manufacturer's website.

If this doesn't sort out the problem, check whether your laptop manufacturer
has a display driver listed on its support website for your model.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST

Q I've got four PCs with antivirus programs installed, and would like to know
whether adding Ashampoo Antivirus to the arsenal would cause a conflict. Also,
when I try to install Firefox on my netbook the Wi-Fi stops working. Why is
this? SL Banerjee

You should only ever install one antivirus program on a system. Each
application will interpret the scanning behaviour of the other programs as the
behaviour of a virus, leading to an increase in false alerts.

Firefox shouldn't be causing problems for your wireless connection - try
updating your wireless drivers. If the problem persists, it may be an indicator
of a problem elsewhere. Use the Event Viewer (go to Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, Event Viewer) to check for any reported errors.

STALLED UPDATES

Q My PC runs Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack (SP) 1. When I try to
install SP2 from Windows Update or from disc, I receive the following error
message: 'rpc_s_call failed 0X800806be'. My computer is otherwise working
without any apparent problems. Jack Barrett

I believe the error code should actually be 0x800706be, Jack. This refers to a
series of problems related to Windows Update and the Update Agent. You'll
need to update the Windows Update Agent to the latest version. For 32bit
editions of XP and Vista you can do so from tinyurl.com/2thc5r; 64bit users
should go to tinyurl.com/3ccjom.

Disable your antivirus program's scanning module and install the Update Agent.
Now enable the antivirus and reboot. You should then be able to apply the
service pack without any problems.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST, PART II

Q My brand-new laptop runs Windows Vista and came with Avast Antivirus and PC
Tools ThreatFire preinstalled.

I want to install Avira AntiVir but receive error messages when I try to do so.
Kevin Stephenson

As we advise in Conflict of interest (left), you should never install two
antivirus programs on one machine. You can remove Avast via Add/Remove Programs
if you'd prefer to use Avira, but you don't need both.

WEBCAM WOES

Q My PC came with a webcam, but it doesn't work the way I expected. The
vendor has advised me to use Windows Messenger with it. TS Neame

It isn't uncommon for webcams to come without a dedicated utility, given that
they're primarily designed to work with communication software, such as
Windows Messenger and Skype. If you sign up for a free account with either of
these services then you should be able to use your webcam without needing to
actually call anyone.

PHOTO FREEZE

Q My system regularly locks up when I send attachments in Windows Mail or Google
Mail or upload images to Facebook; I have to reboot the PC to clear the screen.
Tech support have advised reinstalling Windows. What do you think? Colin
Dunwell

Perhaps you're trying to send very large files, Colin, in which case you
should first compress or reduce them in size. WinZip ( winzip.com) is a useful
compression utility, while most free and low-cost photo editors have an
image-resizing facility.

You should also run a disk check in case there are errors on your system. Go to
Start, Computer and right-click your drive. Select Properties, Tools, Error
Checking and click Check Now. Ensure 'Automatically fix errors' is ticked
and then hit Start. Reboot the machine when prompted.

Download and install any required Windows service packs and patches via Windows
Update. Also ensure that any essential plug-ins are installed and up to date.
The two most important for web-based applications are Java ( java.com) and Adobe
Flash Player ( adobe.com).

Another fix is to try using another email client, such as Thunderbird (
mozilla.com).

If none of these solutions works then I'm afraid you'll need to reinstall
your system using the recovery discs.

NAME CHANGE

Q In What's in a name? you said that using the text
string $N in an Irfanview slideshow would cause it to display the filename of my
photos onscreen. While this does work, it does so only in a black band above
the photo or to the rig

[AI] COMPLETE PC REPAIR GUIDE

2010-04-26 Thread Sanjay

We use our PCs pretty much every day, but a worryingly large amount of that time
is spent troubleshooting computing headaches. Rick Broida and Rosemary
Hattersley address some of the most frustrating problems a PC user can face

Here's a poser for you: when was the last time you went a whole day without
touching your computer? Access to the web is now viewed as a right, not a
privilege, and the provision of broadband-grade internet access is a national
priority - but where would either of these be without the humble PC? Whether
it's serving up web pages, music, photos, TV and videos or helping you make
sense of the household accounts, the personal computer is an invaluable tool and
an established source of entertainment.

Given its myriad roles and boundless capabilities, it's little wonder that
this complex invention doesn't always perform exactly the way it should. In
fact, the surprise is that PCs don't go wrong more often. When things do go
awry, you often write or email to tell us, sometimes with an anecdote about
misbehaving components or a tale of woe about how hard it is to get things
fixed. Many times, it's because you're keen to roll up your sleeves and try
to fix things yourself, and need some pointers.

Each month we bring you several pages of Helproom Q&As - queries and taxing
problems you've written in to tell us about in the hope that we can help
resolve them. We print both the query and our suggested fixes in
the belief that issues afflicting one reader are highly likely to have puzzled
or aggrieved others too. Some are very specific issues: one reader recently
found his laptop picking up the frequency of American overseas radio broadcasts.
Other queries, however, are all too familiar. Our inbox and our online forums
are certainly never short of pleas for help or commentary about the quirks of
day-to-day computing.

Every so often, we like to take a step back and see what sort of computing
issues are causing the biggest headaches, and what we can do to alleviate them.

Performance

Some of the most troublesome computing issues rear their heads when you first
switch on your PC. Whether the power button elicits no response or you get a
screen full of error messages once you've booted into Windows, there's
nothing worse than everything going wrong before you even begin.

Failure to launch

First off, let's look at why a PC might not start up in the first place. If
you can't hear the hard drive spinning or the fan whirring into life when you
press the power button, the chances are the power supply unit (PSU) has gone
west and needs to be replaced. Before you rush out and buy a replacement,
though, check it's not the electrical socket at fault as it's possible
you've fused it. Plug in a device you know works to rule this out.

If you've recently upgraded to a more powerful graphics card, it's likely it
draws far more power than its predecessor, in which case you'll certainly need
to replace the PSU. For advice on which, see our group test and buying advice
at tinyurl.com/PSUtest.

If the PC sounds as though it's going to power up but nothing appears
onscreen, check that the monitor is properly connected and that it works. Try
an alternative power cable or connecting cable. If the screen works but Windows
doesn't complete its boot-up routine, you probably need to replace the Cmos
battery. Consult the motherboard maker's website for advice on how to reset
its jumpers.

Other potential culprits include the graphics card and a faulty RAM module. The
free MemTest86 ( memtest86.com) will help you establish whether the latter is
the case. In most cases, though, Windows or a conflicting piece of code are
more likely to prevent your PC booting up. Try restarting your PC and booting
into Safe Mode.

Slow startups

We've covered the issue of unacceptably slow startups many times before.
While Vista users have largely got used to the tortoise-like progress of their
shiny operating system (OS) as it labours into view, Microsoft bloat isn't
necessarily at the heart of every slow startup. The programs you install and
the applets intended to improve your web experience are just as likely to be at
fault.

The secret is to deactivate those that don't need to launch the moment Windows
fires up.

To see what's set to load when you boost up your PC, go to Start, All
Programs, Startup in XP. To delete a non-essential item from this folder,
right-click it and choose Delete. To get rid of it entirely, go to Add/Remove
Programs.

Another option: in Vista or Windows 7 go to Start, Run, type msconfig and press
Enter. Click on the Startup tab and untick any unwanted programs.

If you merely want to postpone some apps auto-starting, you need Startup Delayer
( bit.ly/1FCBg7). This free app gives you control over which program or service
loads and in which order, so they aren't clamouring for the same processor
cycles. Adjust the slider next to each item to set how long Windows should wait
before

[AI] Can gadgets be too small, cheap or powerful?

2010-04-26 Thread Sanjay

Progress is wonderful - but at what point do things get out of hand? Mike
Elgan investigates

We all know technology gets smaller, cheaper and more feature-rich over time.
But is that always a good thing?

Too small

Take netbooks, for instance. The original idea was that they are tiny enough to
slip into a bag and use on the move. But a recent product launch by a Chinese
company makes us think they can actually be too small. uSmart showed off a
netbook with a 4.8 inches screen at the Hong Kong Electronic Fair. The mini
netbook is powered by an Intel Atom processor and, unlike many full-size
laptops, has HDMI support for audio and video. What makes this a netbook,
rather than a PDA, is that it runs XP, Vista, Windows 7 or Linux.

Small, portable netbooks are great - provided you can see the screen and use
the keyboard. Users complained about the cramped screen and keyboard of the
first-generation netbooks with 7 inches screens; how can a 4.8 inches-screen
netbook running Windows be anything but miserable to use?

Even devices without screens and keyboards have become too tiny for their own
good. USB flash drives are a good example: the iDisk Diamond is about the size
and nearly the thickness of a fingernail.

Elecom, meanwhile, offers a MicroSD MRSMC03 card reader that's nearly as
small. The tiny device lets you insert your own MicroSD Card and read it on any
PC.

Both the iDisk Diamond and the Elecom MR-SMC03 are small enough to swallow.

Drop either, and finding it will be like searching for a contact lens.
Fortunately, both have places to attach a strap, which secures the gadget but
triples the bulk.

Too cheap

While it's fairly straightforward to make the case that some gadgets can be
too small, is it possible for gadgets to be too cheap? We're about to find
out.

The ukp300 netbook was big news last year. But at press time, you could get a
full-size Toshiba laptop with 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive and Windows 7 for
ukp299 at Tesco.

The problem with such low prices is that, if everybody gravitates toward
zero-margin products, quality will suffer.  Just look at the airline industry;
people now use the internet to book flights based exclusively on airfares. The
result is lousy service, no food and overworked, underpaid pilots.

Too feature-rich?

IoSafe offers a waterproof, fireproof external hard drive called the IoSafe Solo
($499 or around ukp297, iosafe.com/solo) that holds 2TB of data. That's 2,000
gigabytes of storage space.

What are you going to do with all that storage space? If you fill it up,
you'll never be able to back everything up online or anywhere else. If you
have a hard-drive crash, that data is gone forever.

The iPhone is famous for its accessories. You can buy just about any peripheral
device you can think of. But a new product called the 8X Telescope with Hard
Case for iPhone is an accessory too far. The case attaches to the phone, and
the absurdly large telephoto lens attaches to the case. You put the whole thing
on a tripod that comes with it, because the telephoto lens will exaggerate any
movement and make your pictures blurry.

But if you're going to carry a bulky case, tripod and lens, why not just carry
a separate digital camera?

Meanwhile, the Apple Magic Mouse is getting a lot of (bad) press. It attempts
to make all functionality invisible, using multitouch gestures rather than
buttons.

The opposite of the Magic Mouse is an over-engineered pointing device called the
OpenOfficeMouse (OOMouse) which has 18 buttons. It also has an Xbox-like
joystick on the side. Those buttons are highly programmable with key commands,
macros and what the write-up calls "default profiles" for OpenOffice
applications.

What's the point of so many buttons, and so much programmability? It will
probably take you two years to master all the time-saving features.

We never thought we'd see the day, but here it is: some gadgets have now
become too small, too cheap and too complex.
