Hi,
To register in Vebvisum you must have the invitation from the vebvism,
for that in the registration page there will be link for invitation,
once if you press enter on that link or button (I am not so sure) you
will be taken to the one web page.
There you have to give some information about your visual impairment,
and the request should be indicative that you are going to use
Vebvisum for the noncomercial and due vision impairment only. You
will get an invitation to your provided e-mail ID within 48 hours.
Then you can register as other forms.
Hope This will help you.

their software maintenance agreement, so, they release versions as early

readers have come out in the market and competing jaws. Microsoft is

Re: [AI] Query about agreements between publishing companies and private users

2010-06-28 Thread Prashant Naik
Dear Lilya,

XRCVC started the work of publishers contact three years ago and since the
Daisy forum of India (DFI) has formed we approach publishers as DFI’s
publisher’s contact initiative and ask for e-text of books for converting
them into accessible DAISY format.

We (DFI) have signed agreements with few publishers including good
mainstream publishers like Oxford, SAGE, Cambridge, etc. The agreement is
clearly mentioning that permission is for converting these books into DAISY
and will be distributed only to the print disabled persons through DFI
member organizations. One of the achievement for XRCVC and DFI was to bring
Bookshare in India and now very actively DFI and Bookshare are contacting
publishers and got good success.

[AI] Helen Keller remembrance day organised

2010-06-28 Thread Gopalakrishnan
Helen Keller remembrance day organised

CHENNAI, June 29, 2010

Liffy Thomas

The Birla Planetarium is Shazia Fathima's favourite place and she wants to
become an astronaut. The 14-year-old girl has congenital rubella syndrome,
which led to her hearing and visual impairment, but that has not been a
deterrent to work on the computer, typewriter or do needle work. Her teachers
at the Sadhana Unit for Deafblind are amazed to see this budding talent, who
asks doubts and can solve Mathematics of Class V grade.

There are many deafblind such as Fathima who have overcome their disability to
complete Class XII and a few who have passed civil service examination prelims.

These are the Helen Kellers of today and are an example that even a unique
disability such as deafblind can be conquered, says Akhil Paul, director, Sense
International (India).

June 27 (Sunday) marked the 130 anniversary of Helen Keller – the American
author and the first deafblind person to get a Bachelors degree. For the
different social organisations working to provide early intervention to this
category, it is another occasion to talk of success stories of people who have
fought multiple disabilities as well as to create awareness.

“Over two decades ago there was only one institute – Helen Keller Institute for
the Deaf and Deafblind in Mumbai – working for the deafblind. Today, there are
39 organisations in 19 States,” says Mr. Paul.

It is estimated that there are over 4 lakh deafblind people in India, and
identifying people with multiple disabilities is a challenge. A majority of
them do not find place in single disability schools as the needs of the
deafblind are unique. While technology has come as aid to the deafblind, they
are expensive and can be afforded by a few, say those working in the field.

“We give individualised and functional education, where the curriculum is
suited to the child rather than child being suited to the curriculum,” says
Dipti Karnad, special educator, Sadhana Unit for Deafblind, attached to Clarke
School for the Deaf.

Sense International (India) through its partner organisations is supporting
over 30,000 people, but they say more awareness needs to be created.

Early identification, early intervention and appropriate rehabilitation
measures is the message organisations are taking forward. “Every blind person
should take a test for hearing ability and every person with hearing impairment
should take a vision test,” says S. Prabakar, professor, Holy Cross Society,
Tiruchi. The non governmental organisation along with other groups is
organising the Helen Keller Remembrance Day to show examples of people who are
successful despite their multiple disabilities and create awareness.

Re: [AI] Query on Maths softwares for blind kids

2010-06-28 Thread Roopakshi Pathania

Hi Prashant,

There is no reason why Math learning games available from regular toy shops
can’t be adapted for this purpose.
Tactile numbers and some of the common Math operators are available for small
kids in such stores; of course this is not exactly a game, but is useful in
learning numbers and simple operations.
Similarly, any such game that involves use of tactile symbols or objects can be
used. A thorough search of the toy shop is probably required in this case.
Braille or tactilely marked Rubik’s Cube can also be considered

Re: [AI] Query about agreements between publishing companies and private users

2010-06-28 Thread Roopakshi Pathania

Hi,

I don’t know about the particular agreement you speak of, but I have received
electronic copies of books from publishers and authors for my studies based on
the simple and rather obvious understanding that I have purchased a hard copy
of the said book, and that I won’t distribute copies of the same. Some authors
gave me the electronic version even without demanding a proof of purchase.
Of course not all publishers were willing to do this.

The only agreement I know of is the one that publishers make with a disability
office attached usually to an educational institution. The person in charge of
this arrangement is suppose to provide a copy of the book to the student(s)
As far as I know this isn’t very common in India or many other countries.
Perhaps XRCVC from Mumbai may be doing something in this regard.

[AI] Query about agreements between publishing companies and private users

2010-06-28 Thread L I

Dear AI-members,
At the website
http://www.inclusiveplanet.com/en/channelpost/600354
I made a query and I would love to see you participating.
The content of the query is given below. You can also forward the text to other
mailing lists or persons you know and who might take interest in it, too.

Thank you for your attention,
Best wishes,
Lilya I

Beside the possibility to get accessible books from institutions like libraries
and schools for the blind some publishing companies are offering the option
to provide blind or partially sighted students with electronic books as long an
agreement between the concerned company and private user is being signed
up. I would like to know what experiences you made with these publishing
companies, what basic conditions you had to accept and fulfil and which
documents
were required from you. If you don’t want to make the company’s names public
you can write to me in a message or just give a general report here. The results
of the query will be used for a paper about accessible books for blind and
partially sighted students and researchers.

Subject: [AI] Dr Rajalakshmi BATTLE FOR RESERVATION

Dear friends, I got this article from my friend, hence I am not able
to give you any source for this.

BANGALORE: Trained in classical and Western dance, and an aspiring
model, this Oxford Dental College graduate's dreams of higher studies
were almost dashed after she met with an accident that left her
completely immobile. But her grit, and more so her mother's spirit,
changed her life and that of many others for the better.

S J Rajalakshmi's is an inspiring story. She was travelling to Chennai
to present a paper at a national conference when she met with a road
accident, resulting in permanent loss of mobility in both her lower
limbs.

She completed her graduation and internship in a wheelchair, and also
topped her college in orthodontics and community dentistry. Barely a
month out of a major surgery in 2009, she wrote her P-G entrance exam
and passed with a good score.

BATTLE FOR RESERVATION

Though the government of India had reserved 3% seats for persons with
disability, the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences had
reserved only one seat for a physically challenged candidate in 2009.

Since the university was supposed to reserve 3% seats, Dr Rajalakshmi
approached the then state commissioner for disabilities Das
Suryawanshi, who issued a order to reserve 3% seats. Surprisingly, the
university ignored this order. Not one to give up, Rajalakshmi's
mother Dr Shobha Murthy filed a writ petition in the high court. After
a year-long battle, the court issued a historic order, making 3%
reservation mandatory for disabled students in government and private
educational institutions.

Her battle enabled 24 disabled students to pursue their dreams in
medical and dental PG courses this year.

'MY LIFE CHANGED'

"When I suddenly became disabled, my life completely changed. It was
shocking for us to know that an Act enacted 15 years ago was not
implemented, and people with disability were denied their rights all
these years. My mother was struggling to get justice for me and I was
worried about her health. On several occasions, I wanted her to give
up, but she was confident and fought till I and many like me got
justice. I thank my mother and brothers for being my pillars of
strength," Rajalakshmi told TOI.

"All her life, my daughter has been a meritorious student and when I
knew she rightly deserved the seat, I had to fight for her rights. I
have argued my daughter's case alone in court. But I am happy the
struggle benefited the entire disabled student community. From the
current year, it is mandatory that all educational institutions
reserve 3% seats as per the PWD Act," said mother Shobha Murthy.

"The government turns the disabled into beggars by only distributing
wheelchairs and clutches. They should empower them by efficiently
implementing the PWD Act," she added.

Since the state government had failed to implement the Act, Dr
Rajalakshmi lost one year. But not really — the plucky girl did a
course in fashion designing and pursued her Masters in Psychology
through distance education.

same amar, it is recommended for jaws 50 and higher. don't worry about the
versions. freedom scientific and Microsoft, both are trying to get rid of
their software maintenance agreement, so, they release versions as early
as possible. freedom scientific releases version because more screen
readers have come out in the market and competing jaws. Microsoft is
afraid of its other competitor.

hello amar! as you close any application, your system might focus on
desktop. so, jaws automatically read the desktop item. better if you
use the recommended settings of freedom scientific for jaws, however,
it is designed for lower version for jaws then 6.0, but, no matter how
latest is your jaws, i still set my system on recommended settings of
freedom scientific.

2010-06-28 Thread BHAWANI SHANKAR VERMA
same amar, it is recommended for jaws 50 and higher. don't worry about the
versions. freedom scientific and Microsoft, both are trying to get rid of
their software maintenance agreement, so, they release versions as early as
possible. freedom scientific releases version because more screen readers
have come out in the market and competing jaws. Microsoft is afraid of its
other competitor.

hello amar! as you close any application, your system might focus on
desktop. so, jaws automatically read the desktop item. better if you
use the recommended settings of freedom scientific for jaws, however,
it is designed for lower version for jaws then 6.0, but, no matter how
latest is your jaws, i still set my system on recommended settings of
freedom scientific.

entire documentation and follow the instructions:

Windows XP and JAWS

This topic discusses settings changes we recommend you make when using
JAWS

in Windows XP Home or Professional. You must be logged in with

administrative rights to make several of these changes.

Many of these settings are changed within Control Panel. To open Control

Panel, press the WINDOWS KEY to open the Start Menu, move to Control
Panel,

and press ENTER. Depending on your system settings, Control Panel either

opens in a separate window, or the Control Panel items open as a sub-menu.

We recommend making changes in the following areas:

a. Display Properties

b. Folder Options

c. Start Menu

d. Windows Explorer

e. System Performance

Display Properties

1. From the Control Panel, move to "Display" and press Enter.

2. From the themes combo box, select Windows XP.

3. In the List of backgrounds on the Desktop page, choose Bliss.

4. Set Position to "Stretch."

5. In the Screen Saver combo box on the Screen Saver page, press HOME to

select none.

6. On the Appearance page, set Windows and Buttons to Windows classic

style.

7. Set Color Scheme to Windows Standard.

8. Set Font to normal.

9. Close the dialog.

Note: After making these changes, the Display page Themes combo box says

"Modified Theme."

Folder Options

1. From the Control Panel, press ALT+T to go to the Tools menu.

2. Press O for Folder Options.

3. From the Tasks radio button group, select Use Windows Classic folders.

4. (Optional):

1. On the View page, move to the Advanced Settings tree view.

2. Clear the Hide Extensions For Known File Types check box.

3. If you also use screen magnification software, clear the Show pop-up

description for folder and desktop items check box. Pop up descriptions

often hides the menu item just below any given menu item, making it

impossible to visually see the next item in the menu list.

4. Move to the Apply to All Folders button and press SPACEBAR.

5. Select Yes in the dialog that opens to acknowledge this change.

5. Move to the OK button in the Folder Options dialog box and press

SPACEBAR to close this dialog box.

Start Menu

1. From Control Panel, Move to Taskbar and Start menu and press ENTER.

2. From the Taskbar page, press ALT+G to move to and uncheck Group

Similar Taskbar Buttons.

3. Press ALT+H to move to and uncheck the check box for Hide inactive

icons.

4. Press CTRL+TAB to move to the Start Menu page.

5. Select Classic start menu.

6. Press ENTER to close this dialog box.

Windows Explorer

1. Press WINDOWS KEY+E to open Windows Explorer.

2. Press ALT+V to open the View menu.

3. Select "Arrange Icons by" and press ENTER to open the submenu.

4. Move to the menu item "Name" to arrange by Name, and Press ENTER to

select this and close the menus.

5. Repeat steps 2 and 3, and move to the item "Show in Groups." If it is

checked, press ENTER to uncheck it and close the menus.

6. Press ALT+T to open the Tools menu.

7. Press O to open the Folder Options Dialog.

8. Press CTRL+TAB to move to the View page.

9. Press SPACEBAR to activate the "Apply to all folders" button, and

press SPACEBAR on the YES button to acknowledge this change.

10. Move to the OK button and press SPACEBAR to close this dialog box.

System Performance

1. From the Control Panel, move to System and press ENTER to open the

System Properties Dialog.

2. Press CTRL+TAB to move to the Advanced page.

3. Press ALT+S to activate the Performance Settings button. The

Performance Options Dialog opens.

4. Clear the following check boxes:

a. Animate Windows when Minimizing and Maximizing.

b. Slide open Combo Boxes.

c. Smooth-scroll List Boxes.

d. Use Visual Styles on Windows and Buttons.

5. Press ENTER to close the Performance Options dialog and return to the

System Properties dialog box.

6. Press ENTER to activate the OK button and close the System Properties

dialog box.

Internet Explorer and outlook express:

If you want to use the Internet Explorer toolbar, you should include text

labels on the buttons. To do this go to the Toolbars submenu under the
View

menu and choose customize and select Text Labels. There are several
advanced

options that should also be changed. Open the Internet Options dial

The other thing is that:
If I have opened more than one window of internet explorer and I press alt f4

Is there any setting that I need to do.

I look forward to your response. Thanks guys.

Hi everyone, I wrote to the developer of Doc Scanner yesterday to
suggest they look into a specifically designed for visually impaired
people app for OCR and I got the best response ever back from them.
What a company.

Jussi Forsstrom, Jun 24 09:47 (EEST):
Hi Andy!
Thank you so much for your message. We are very pleased to hear your
thoughts and really appreciate it!
It's almost ironic that you
contacted us now about using DocScanner as a reading tool, as we are
just launching an app called SayText.
SayText is an app designed
especially for the visually impaired and by the way, it's free!
In a few words to describe it's use, you need to place the iPhone on
the center of a document. There's a big button for starting the tool,
tap it.
Slowly elevate the iPohne upwards from the document until you
hear an beep sound - this indicates, that the document is now fully in
frame and the camera will shoot automatically, when the picture is
stable / focused.
Now only thing you have to do, is to wait for a
while (You can tap the screen to hear the OCR progress, e.g. OCR
35%).
When the OCR is ready you can start the voiceover to read the
document out loud.
The app should come to Appstore in a week or so.
We're happy to give you more info about SayText. There is a website
for SayText:
http://www.docscannerapp.com/saytext/
There's also a video, where Mr. Heikki Ekola, totally blind person
uses it. He's representing the Finnish Federation of the Visually
Impaired - You can find the video here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlWJF27IdX4
This video is also at the SayText homepage.
We hope you'll find this app useful and if so, please tell to your
friends about it!
Your's sincerely,
Jussi Forsström

Re: [AI] Screen reading software for iphone

2010-06-28 Thread Kiran Kaja
I know that there are voices for additional languages in IOS 4 and the new
OS X 10.6.4 but I am not sure if Hindi is one of them.

I'll be getting a new iPhone 4 shortly. I can check and let you know. I
could also update my Mac Book to 10.6.4 but I am holding off on doing that
because a lot of VoiceOver users complained about having problems with
Safari.

Kiran

Re: [AI] Screen reading software for iphone

2010-06-28 Thread Kiran Kaja
All this is a bit confusing to a lot of people. The iPhone 3G when it came
out in 2008 was running iPhone OS 2.x. when iPhone 3GS and iPhone OS 3.0
were released in 2009, users of older iPhone 3G were also given an option to
upgrade their phone's operating system version from iPhone 2.x to 3.0 with
certain limitations. And universal access is one of them.

Kiran

Hmm, well you’re right. The accessibility features were indeed implemented
when the new iPhone 3G S came out.
But I had a distinct memory that Voice Over and other features were a part
of iPhone 3G.
So I went to check, and according to this PC World article although these
features were in iPhone OS 3.0, they could only be used on iPhone 3G S.
