[AI] Protect and purge your personal files
Protect and purge your personal files Eliminate private documents permanently from your hard drive When you stop and think about it, your home computer holds a lot of information about you- credit card numbers, bank account details, passwords, medical information, websites you've visited, and those deep, dark secrets you share with your best friend via email. There naturally comes a time when you're ready for an upgrade, whether it be a bigger hard drive or an entirely new PC. But what should you do with the old one? And what about the information on it? You need to remove this information whether you donate it, sell it, or trash it. Imagine your hard drive- including all of your personal information-falling into the wrong hands. That's what could happen if you don't do a little damage control before you dispose of your hard drive. Why delete isn't enough Many people think that clearing their history, deleting files and cookies, and emptying their computer's recycle bin is enough. Not so, according to IT specialist Tony Lum. He says that's like removing the table of contents in a book. The chapters (or your files, in this case) are still there, they're just harder to find. What you've actually done is remove a particular file from the disk's index. The file itself still exists on your hard disk. For the average person it's harder to recover, but an experienced programmer (or hacker) could easily locate the file. Previous or temporary versions of the file might also be saved under different names. You need to go one step further and overwrite your data. Lum recommends you back up everything you want to keep on your hard drive and then run hard -drive wiping software, which will overwrite your information with random ones and zeros. He also recommends you use a program that overwrites your data more than once. The more it's overwritten, the harder it is to recover. Select software to wipe your hard drive clean Is it impossible to retrieve your information afterward? Not 100 percent, but Lum says that unless the CIA is after you, you should be in the clear after using one of these disk-erasing tools that are available for download online: a.. Active@ KillDisk: This free hard -drive eraser overwrites data using zeros. You can upgrade to the professional version that conforms to the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) standards. b.. Softpedia/DP Wiper: IT consultant Daniel Gresser recommends freeware programs from Softpedia, like DP Wiper, which overwrites in from one to 35 passes and has DOD-compliant wiping. c.. WipeDrive: WipeDrive overwrites your data as many times as you like and runs a verification test. Always keep a record of where all important files are stored, says Gresser, who recommends deleting each file by dropping it into DP Wiper and selecting the kind of wipe required.Unless you take the hard drive out and keep it, to get a PC ready for sale, Gresser suggests that PC users delete the following using DP Wiper or a similar program: a.. Everything in the My Documents folder. b.. All temporary Internet files. c.. All cookies. d.. All files relating to personal and financial matters that may have been stored in folders other than My Documents. e.. All email: Outlook Express users need to search for and delete .dbx files; Windows Mail users need to search for and delete .eml files; and Microsoft Office Outlook users need to search for and delete .pst files. This will send them to the recycle bin for secure deletion. Also, remember to remove all email account settings and passwords. Reinstall your operating system to overwrite files Your operating system's installation CD should allow you to simultaneously reinstall and clear your hard drive. Lum says this should be enough to prevent the average person from obtaining personal information from your hard drive. However, he says he's managed to salvage data from computers using third-party software even after an operating system was reinstalled. Protect information on your work computer You'll also want to think about personal information on your work computer when it's time to move on to a new job. You can't wipe the hard drive since the computer isn't your property, but you can make it somewhat harder to find sensitive information by deleting personal emails, clearing your web browser's cache and history, deleting any personal files on your hard drive, and emptying your trash or recycle bin. Playing it safe Still concerned? Don't dispose of your hard drive. The bottom line is, if you're really concerned about identity theft, then don't give away
Re: [AI] Free OCR on Windows based mobile phone
This is what I came across in a mail to SayEverything about TopOCR: TopOCR While travelling we often stumble on a good newspaper or magazine article. If you find one such piece interesting and desire to take a copy of it, the best option these days is to take a snapshot of it with your mobile camera. In this regard, the mobile phone camera acts as a scanner. Now, if you wish to convert this camera text image into normal editable text, the software TopOCR (http://www.topocr.com/) could come in handy. This free software lets you easily convert any text image into a normal text file - you just need to make it accessible to TopOCR. When you start TopOCR, it displays two windows side-by-side - one for the image file and other for the OCR text output. Once you are satisfied with the text output, TopOCR allows you to save it as a PDF or HTML file. In addition, using the program's text-to-speech feature one can convert the OCR text output to an MP3 audio file. Of course, this feature can be used to create audio from any text file - just load the text file into the TopOCR text window and press the TexToSpeech button. http://www.topocr.com/mobile.html Regards. -original message- Subject: [AI] Free OCR on Windows based mobile phone From: harish har...@accessindia.org.in Date: 12/09/2010 10:47 am Hello Don't know about the accessability or the claims. Hi, When you say, the device refuses to install, what do you mean? Can you see the device as a drive under my computer? Did you try my suggestion of activating the broadband software but not using it to dial? Ketan, You don't need to uninstall Tata. Just right click on Reliance in the network list and there should be an option something like Set as default. Dial number is perhaps *777. Re: [AI] Urgent: Reliance Broadband plus help required
Hi Ketan, The 'Set as default' function of the Reliance Net Connect application is what you're looking for. It's under the Settings tab of the application window. You get following tabs in the Reliance NetConnect window: - Connection - Activate - Settings - Zapac - Help These tabs cannot to switched using CTRL+TAB. The JAWS cursor can help although. Switch to JAWS cursor and access the tab list using UP/DOWN arrow keys. Once there, press CTRL+LEFT or CTRL+RIGHT to take the JAWS cursor to 'Settings'. Perform 'Left Mouse Click' now and the Settings tab opens. You can use TAB key now to navigate to the 'Set as default' button. Activate it and you're done. Hth... Hi Zujar, Let me tell you that the data card which Reliance or any other such service used to provide about a year back was very much accessible. Even I'm also having the Reliance data card and its very much similar to what you spoke in your last mail. However, the data cards that all such companies are supplying today are completely inaccessible with even JAWS cursor simply because all the buttons are given in graphics and no text labelled on that. so the only temporary remedy to those cards is to first get it connected with the help of a sighted person and then to connect it through the connection manager. Use of Ciansoft Products with Windows Vista Ciansoft Banner List of 12 items Home Products TwainControlX PDFBuilderASP PDFBuilderX ClipManagerX CFList Example Code Services FAQs Contact Site Map list end Use of Ciansoft Products with Windows Vista All Ciansoft software products are fully compatible with Windows Vista and IIS 7.0, the version of IIS included with Vista. However, the new security features in Vista present some difficulties in installation and use of ActiveX controls and ASP components. This page provides useful information to help you get our products working in Vista. Background Information: User Account Control (UAC) in Vista To anybody using Vista for the first time, User Account Control (UAC) is one of the most noticeable changes from earlier Windows operating systems. This new feature is intended to ensure that no administrative tasks can be run on your computer without the user's knowledge. The most obvious effect of UAC is that a dialogue box will appear on screen demanding your attention every time you try to run an executable, save a file in a protected location, etc. There is one important fact to understand about UAC. Just because you are logged on to your computer as an Administrator, this does not mean that any programmes you start will also have Administrator rights. This is a significant change in behaviour from previous operating systems. To run a programme with Administrator rights, you must specifically request this. This is done by right mouse clicking on the file and selecting the option 'Run as Administrator'. Vista will then request permission for the file to run. If you are already logged on as an Administrator, this will involve clicking a button in a dialogue box. If you are only logged on as a Standard user, an Administrator account name and Password will have to be entered. A programme that always needs to be run as an Administrator can be set to do this by default. Right mouse click on the file and select Properties, select the Compatibility tab and check the box for 'Run this program as an administrator'. Installation of ActiveX Controls (TwainControlX, PDFBuilderX, ClipManagerX) All our ActiveX controls are supplied as executable installers. These installers must be run with administrator rights as they need to carry out two administrator tasks: copying files to the 'Program Files' area, and registering the ActiveX control. If you are logged on as an Administrator, then Vista will detect that the installer needs Administrator rights and will automatically prompt you to grant permission. A dialogue box with the message 'A program needs your permission to continue' will be shown and you should click 'Continue'. If you are logged on as a Standard User, then the installer itself will give a warning that Administrator rights are not available and asking if you want to continue. Do not click 'Yes' to continue as the installation will fail. The correct approach is to click 'No', then run the installer again using 'Run as Administrator' as explained in the description about UAC above. Sometimes you may wish to register the OCX file manually instead of using the installer. This can be done using the command line utility RegSvr32.exe. This needs Administrator rights, but it is the Command Prompt that must be given those rights. From the Start button select Start / All Programs / Accessories, then right mouse click over Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'. Use of ActiveX Controls in a Development Environment Some legacy development environments that were written before the existence of Vista will encounter difficulties in using ActiveX controls. For example, if you try to use Visual Basic 5 on Vista, it will not be possible to add an ActiveX control to the ToolBox. Once again this is an issue of Administrator rights, as the Visual Basic executable (VB5.exe) does not have the same permissions that the logged on user has. The solution is to run VB5.exe (or any other development environment) using the 'Run as Administrator' option, then everything will work correctly as on earlier operating systems. Installation of the ASP Component PDFBuilderASP PDFBuilderASP is supplied in a ZIP file and must be registered manually. This can be done using the command line utility RegSvr32.exe. This needs Administrator rights, but it is the Command Prompt that must be given those rights. From the Start button select Start / All Programs / Accessories, then right mouse click over Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'. ASP in IIS 7.0 Note that when installing IIS 7.0 on Windows Vista, ASP is not installed by default. To use ASP, this option must be explicitly selected from the 'Turn Windows features on or off' option in the Control Panel under Internet Information Services / World Wide Web Services / Application Development Features / ASP. To debug an ASP script it is important to be able to receive meaningful

Hello, I am using both Reliance and Tata Photon. The important thing to note is that both these companies provide hardware devices from either ZTE or HUAWEI. Depending upon the hardware supplied, you will get a different dialing software. My experience is that HUAWEI of Reliance is partially accessible. One can tab to the connect and disconnect button on the dialer and access the settings and other tabb pages with Jaws cursor. On the contrary, HUAWEI Tata Photon dialing software is not at all accessible. It is not possible to TAB to or use Jaws cursor to access any of the buttons. Thankfully, all the devices work from the Windows Network Connections panel. However, the data cards that all such companies are supplying today are completely inaccessible with even JAWS cursor simply because all the buttons are given in graphics and no text labelled on that. so the only temporary remedy to those cards is to first get it connected with the help of a sighted person and then to connect it through the connection manager. Hth... Can you see the device as a drive under my computer? Did you try my suggestion of activating the broadband software but not using it to dial? Another thing you could try is to remove all instamces of the device from the device manager and then plug the device back in again. Pranav -Original
Re: [AI] Diabetes treatment to help patients shed weight
Very useful for a juvenile diabetic like me. Thanks buddy. Diabetes treatment to help patients shed weight Published: Sunday, Sep 12, 2010, 17:32 IST Place: London | Agency: IANS An injection that controls diabetes and fights obesity could be available in Britain by Christmas. The injection, called Victoza, has been given the go ahead by drugs watchdog the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. The jab, which also lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, could free many type-2 diabetics from having to take insulin, reports the Daily Mail. While insulin causes weight gain, Victoza, also known as liraglutide, sheds pounds - bringing extra health benefits. Rather than injecting insulin straight into the body, Victoza helps patients stabilise their blood sugar levels by stimulating the pancreas into releasing insulin. Draft guidance, which is likely to be rubber-stamped next month, recommends the jab when other key diabetes drugs fail. It is also deemed suitable for extremely overweight diabetics and those who have driving and other jobs that prevent them from taking insulin. In all cases, it should be taken in combination with other diabetes drugs and treatment should be continued only if the patient is benefiting. David Haslam, a general practitioner who already has experience of prescribing the jab, said: If someone is having other problems because they are obese and they can't afford to go on insulin because of their work, then it is absolutely appropriate they get this drug. http://www.dnaindia.com/health/report_diabetes-treatment-to-help-patients-shed-weight_1436935 Vikas Kapoor, MSN Id:dl_vi...@hotmail.com, YahooSkype Id: dl_vikas, Mobile: (+91) 9891098137.
