[AI] IS THERE A VI FRIENDLY ENGINEERING COLLEGE?
Hello dear Access Indians, I am writing this mail for my younger brother. He is going to finish his +2 examinations. He has taken science as his major group with Physics,Chemistry,Maths, and Biology. He is a visually challenged person with 40% of vision. He is planning to join for B.E IT or Computer science. Since he is a VI person it will be difficult for him to manage the practical classes in the normal environment. Is ther any college which supports the VI students to meet their accessibility issues? If anyone is aware about such colleges please let me know. Thanking you in advance, Jerin Jose K. [AI] Eye glasses to aid mobility
Dear Customer RNIB are pleased to announce the launch of our new Ultrasonic Obstacle Detecting Glasses - iGlasses (TM), developed in association with AmbuTech. iGlasses are designed to be used as a secondary mobility device alongside traditional aids such as a cane or guide dog. Worn like spectacles they provide vibration feedback when you near a potential hazard at head and chest height. When you approach obstacles such as overgrown branches, hanging signs or street furniture, the frequency of the vibration will increase - giving you more confidence to explore your surroundings. The frames and arms are black with either clear or brown tinted lenses. Priced at £79.99 excluding VAT, further details can be found at RNIB's online shop: http://www.rnib.org.uk/shop/Pages/ProductDetails.aspx?category=canes_mobilityproductID=ME1401 Kind regards RNIB Products Publications Team -- DISCLAIMER: NOTICE: The information contained in this email and any attachments is confidential and may be privileged. Interesting. Will check it out when I am at the RNIB next week. A wrist band would have been better; not everyone prefers wearing dark glasses. However, if this is as good as the sonar cane, it is incredibly inexpensive, given that the sonar costs around 1000 dollars. -Original Message- From: accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of George Abraham Sent: 19 March 2011 06:12 To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Subject: [AI] Eye glasses to aid mobility Dear Customer RNIB are pleased to announce the launch of our new Ultrasonic Obstacle Detecting Glasses - iGlasses (TM), developed in association with AmbuTech. iGlasses are designed to be used as a secondary mobility device alongside traditional aids such as a cane or guide dog. [AI] MCD creating 1,790 posts of 'special educators' under RTE
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/MCD-creating-1790-posts-of-special-educators-under-RTE/articleshow/7743995.cms on Twitter NEW DELHI: In keeping with the provisions of the Right to Education Act, the MCD has decided to create 1,790 posts of special teachers for children with disabilities in schools run and aided by the civic agency. A meeting of the MCD Standing Committee approved a proposal in this regard this week. The creation of the posts is also in consonance with a Delhi high court order of 2008 that said at least two such teachers should be provided in each school along with necessary teaching aids and reading material. Officials said the Education Department has, however, proposed to create one post of special educator in each primary school. It is in process to place a request to the High Court for consideration, they said. The proposal for creation of 1,790 posts of special educators -- one each for schools run and aided by the MCD -- was prepared in compliance with the direction of the court and the provisions of RTE, an official said. The total financial implication of the project will be Rs 53.70 crore per annum and it is expected to be met put of Plan funds to be provided by Delhi government. There is a provision of financing such expenditure under RTE. According to it, 65 per cent of the expenditure will be borne by the Union government and the remaining by the state, he said. The Right to Education Act provides that a child suffering from disability shall have the right to pursue free and compulsory elementary education. [AI] Fw: [New post] All hosps in state to test babies for disabilities?
WordPress.com - Original Message - From: Nilesh Singit's Blog: Disability News Wolrdwide To: pradeepsocialw...@gmail.com Sent: Saturday, March 19, 2011 11:14 AM Subject: [New post] All hosps in state to test babies for disabilities? All hosps in state to test babies for disabilities? Nilesh Singit | March 19, 2011 at 11:14 | Tags: UNCRPD | Categories: Advocacy, Disability, Disability Studies, Health, Public Interest Litigation | URL: http://wp.me/pyosb-gN Mumbai: Every baby born in a hospital across the state will be tested for disabilities if the state government and the Bombay high court have their way. Maharashtra advocate general Ravi Kadam informed a division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice S J Vazifdar on Friday that the state would issue instructions to all hospitals about screening new-born babies. Every hospital-—public as well as private-—will have to conduct the tests on the baby. Data about the test results would be maintained by the government to indicate the incidence of disabilities. The instructions would be issued in the form of a circular by April 13, said the high court. The assurance came during a special hearing of a bunch of petitions relating to the issues faced by people with disabilities.—including reservation in government jobs, allocation of Mhada houses and guidelines for writers for disabled students during examinations. “Screening tests would help identify visual, auditory and motor disabilities in new-born babies and would aid early medical intervention,” said Dr Bhushan Punani of the Blind People’s Association. Move to enable new-borns welcomed Mumbai: The Maharashtra government’s proposal to screen all new-borns at hospitals came in the Bombay high court during a hearing of a petition on issues faced by the disabled—including reservation in government jobs, allocation of Mhada houses and guidelines for writers for disabled students during examinations. Activists welcomed the broad sweep of the rule that seeks to include every big and small hospital across the state. “If the rules are implemented effectively, the major beneficiaries would be babies born in rural hospitals, who otherwise would have had no access to such tests,'' said advocate Kanchan Pamnani. The court has also focused its attention on the reported absence of medical problems of the disabled in the MBBS syllabus. “When a parent takes a disabled child to the doctor, except for ordering a slew of tests there is no proper diagnosis of what ails the kid,” said an activist. Advocate Uday Warunjikar, counsel for one of the petitioners, said that teaching and sensitizing would-be doctors would not only help children with disabilities but also make the medical practitioners careful while issuing disability certificates. The high court has asked that notices be issued to the Medical Council of India so that it can respond to the issue. Dr Y Amdekar, dean of Wadia Children’s Hospital, said that a clinical screening of children is conducted at birth. “At birth, doctors may be able to say that an organ is in place but how well it works may be known only after a few weeks. Hence, a new-born screening that includes a blood test is useful. A free blood test to screen for serious disorders that could result in mental retardation is being offered in Goa.’’ Dr Amdekar, added that matters of cost and accessibility need to be looked into. Meanwhile, the high court has asked the state and the committee appointed by it to identify gadgets, devices and software to be provided to its visually challenged employees. The judges have also directed the state to submit a list of the number of posts that could be made available for the disabled under the 3% reservation policy if it was required to have been calculated from February 1996. This was the date when the Persons with Disabilities Act came into force. In a related development, the high court has told the state to issue uniform guidelines for writers who are used by visually challenged students during examinations. -- Forwarded message -- From: Sushmeetha sushmee...@voicevision.in Date: Sat, 19 Mar 2011 15:13:01 +0530 Subject: Invitation For Career Workshop On Voice Vision 11th Anniversary To: Nagaraj H nagarajh...@gmail.com Cc: Vanessa Pereira vane...@voicevision.in Dear Sir Voice Vision, started in April 2000 as a computer training institute for the blind and visually impaired with the help of assistive technology in the form or JAWS screen reading software). We have come a long way over the last 11 years. An enjoyable journey through the passage of time which has seen the inclusion of various initiatives such as the reader-writer support, facilitating easy access of NGO information on one platform, incepting a matrimonial portal to name a few. All the initiatives are driven towards our soul mission to enhance the quality of one's living and garner an increased support and participation of the visually impaired and the other differently-able people in today's society. Stemming from this vision is one such branch of Unconventional streams of Education, which is our theme for our discussion on the 3rd of April 2011. The discussion is organized in the backdrop of Voice Vision's eleventh anniversary. The discussion would be served on a platter of a workshop which will outline the different career options that one can direct oneself towards apart from the traditional streams of Arts, Commerce and Science. [AI] Creating partition in external harddisk?
Dear All, First of all, my heartiest wishes on the auspicious occasion of Holi to all accessindians. I pray, our relations become more colorful, strong, and our hearts remain full of love for each one of us. Now coming on to the point: Accessindians are aware of the fact that I recently bought USB 3.0 harddisk of western digital, with the capacity of 500 gb. I need to create 3 partition inside this harddisk. Searching on google gave the direction of using disk management utility which comes with windows 7. I shrinked the space, then created new simple volume. But the problem is that it comes in computer, whereas I want it to be inside the removable drive of the harddisk itself. I have deleted this partition, after shrinking the space. Have no idea of using partitioning utilities as such, and also forgot the things to be kept in mind for partitioning as I learnt partitioning through dos in my 8th class or so. I will appreciate if experts can guide as to how to proceed further. Would love to do it with existing utilities or dos, instead of installing a new software for the same. Regards, Amar Jain. [AI] Banks disable the visually impaired
Banks disable the visually impaired BANGALORE: If you're visually challenged, you can certainly play the piano, but you can't get money out of most ATM machines in hi-tech Bangalore. It is surprising that though ATM facilities are widely available, the visually challenged are unable to make use of them -- all because some banks allegedly refuse to provide ATM cards, while others do not even open accounts. Anil Kumar, 25, working as a manager and also doing a company secretary course, is among those who have been denied an ATM card. He had approached State Bank of Mysore at JP Nagar and his application was allegedly rejected. Though RBI has directed banks to issue ATM cards to the visually challenged, some city banks do not follow the guidelines. Kolkata and Delhi have ATMs specially designed for the blind, which Bangalore lacks. Anil is confident of using the ATM machine. We require orientation to use ATMs, for which some of my visually challenged friends help me. But I should first get an ATM card. I applied at SBM, close to my house in JP Nagar, but could not get it. So also in Chamarajpet SBM branch. The bank manager asked me to give the RBI document which directs banks to issue ATM cards and cheque books to the visually challenged, said Anil. Anil's brother, who is also visually challenged, has access to an ATM through HDFC. In Karnataka, no efforts have been made to design ATMs for the visually challenged. But people like my brother have got used to the existing ATM machine. Those with touch-screen facility are a little difficult to use, says Anil. Canara Bank and ICICI do offer ATM cards, but only at a few branches, claims Girish Vasanth, coordinator of Young Voices, a group of visually challenged educated persons. The same cooperation is not found in all branches. If we can be employed in IT companies and work on par with others, why can't we have ATM cards, cheque books and independent accounts? Girish asks. THE RULE BOOK The Reserve Bank of India issued a circular dated June 4, 2008, stating that all banks must render the same service to all clients, without discrimination. The circular declared that banks must provide the visually impaired with every facility, including cheque book, third-party cheques, ATM, net banking, locker, retail loans, credit cards etc. SPECIAL ATMs FOR THEM Banks should have ATMs specially designed for the visually-challenged. According to the 2001 census, there are 4 lakh visually challenged persons in Karnataka, of who 1 lakh are in Bangalore. Bank accounts are given to only well-educated persons. But most of them discontinue education after SSLC. ATMs must have Braille embossing and we are ready to provide banks with the required support. PK Paul | founder-trustee of indian disabled league foundation TALKING ATM ICICI Bank set up a `Talking ATM for the Visually Impaired', the first of its kind in the country in Pune, for a test run in 2002. Such ATMs have wheelchair access, large display for users with partial vision, Braille-enabled function keys and guide labels, card reader, receipt, cash dispenser, depositor, bunch cash presenter for ease in collecting cash, personalized headphone jack with voice control features, voice-guided transactions and integrated digital video recorder for enhanced security. In August 2010, a talking ATM was installed in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. SBM VERSION In answer to the controversy, State Bank fo Mysore chief manager's office had this to say... Q: How has your bank empowered visually challenged customers? Have you provided them ATM cards and cheque books? A: Visually challenged persons are permitted to open savings bank accounts with cheque book facility. Q: The RBI issued a circular stating that banks must render all services to visually impaired clients. There are complaints that you have denied them ATM cards and cheque books... A: Locker facility is denied only for minors. Q: Why cannot SBM make its services disabled-friendly? What are the risks? A. Providing ATM and net banking facility is under process. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bangalore/Banks-disable-the-visually-impaired/articleshow/7745596.cms Vikas Kapoor, MSN Id: dl_vi...@hotmail.com, YahooSkype Id: dl_vikas, Mobile: (+91) 9891098137. Re: [AI] Scope of Economics for blind students
Hi Karan, Check with Saksham. The rubber mat is just that, a mat made of rubber. The german film is a plastic sheet that goes on top of the mat. You can then take a stylus or a similar implement and draw on the film. The key thing is that you or a sighted helper can draw on the same side of the sheet. These mats and sheets will most certainly help you.
