[AI] Follow-up to Screen Reader Survey Request

Hi Everyone,

First of all, thanks to everyone who has filled out the screen reader survey
I sent out a week ago - your answers are tremendously appreciated, and will
certainly be helpful in developing our understanding of screen reader use in
India. We're hoping that this research will help to improve access and
usability of screen readers for all.

We only have a few more days for collecting answers to this survey, and so
for anyone who can spare the time to take this survey, it would be
phenomenally helpful to this research. Also, if you have friends or
coworkers who use screen readers, or know of other listservs or forums where
you would feel comfortable posting this request (or letting me know about
it, and I can post the request), please feel free to do so, or let me know.

The survey link is here - it's been taking users so far between 30 and 50
minutes. While it's not short, we are hoping that this research will be
helpful to all in the visually impaired community, and again, all responses
are greatly appreciated.

Hi!

That is just because of: some times your tray icons may be hidden: when not
in use.

To solve the problem: just go to the properties of task bar, and unchecked
the option called “hide inactive icons”

[AI] Bionic specs may let blind see

Scientists are developing smart and sleek bionic spectacles which they say 
could soon be on sale and help hundreds of thousands of blind people see.

The "smart spectacles", being developed by a team at the Oxford University in 
the U.K., uses tiny cameras and a pocket computer to alert wearers to objects 
and people ahead.

The cheap and lightweight glasses, which could be on sale by 2014 following 
successful trials, would make it easier for the blind to navigate roads in busy 
areas and even read bus numbers, the researchers said.

Elderly people with age-related macular degeneration are likely to be the 
biggest beneficiaries, the 'Daily Mail' reported.

Past attempts to create such a device have resulted in large dark glasses with 
clunky cameras and bulky computers.

But advances in technology mean it should be possible to create bionic 
spectacles that look almost indistinguishable from standard glasses.

Importantly, a price tag of less than 1,000 pounds should make them affordable, 
the researchers told the Royal Society's Summer Science Exhibition.

"It is satisfying to think that we will be able to produce this at a cost that 
is going make it available to the people who will benefit the most," Dr Stephen 
Hicks, who has completed the basic research and is now working on prototype 
spectacles.

He envisages transparent glasses with lenses studded with small light-emitting 
diodes and cameras the size of a pinhead at the outside top corners of the 
frame.

The cameras will take in the information the eyes should see and send it down a 
cable to a mobile phone-sized computer in the wearer's pocket.

The computer will process the information and simplify it into a pattern of 
dots. The LEDs in the lenses then light up in that pattern, giving the wearer 
vital information about what lies ahead.

[AI] problem with jaws in a 64 bit laptop

Hi guys,

I have just purchased a del inspiron 64 bit lap top with windows 7.
Now jaws is creating a problem.
I have installed Jaws, For some time it works properly but after some
time it starts reacting late.
So if I press the down arrow to go on the next line, only after
finishing reading the current line it goes to the next line. Hence
navigation has become difficult.
So I wanted to know a couple of things.

1. Has any one been able to successfully install Jaws on a 64 bit
computer and if yes is it working properly.
2. Which version of Jaws 64 bit would support the best
3. Does any one face the same problem that I am facing

Help would be greatly appreciated.

[AI] Online MBA launched by annamalai university

The Hindu National

Annamalai University has launched an online MBA programme this academic year 
through distance education mode in association with 361 Degree Minds Consulting 
Private Limited as the technology provider.

Handing over prospectus to applicants, M. Ramanathan, Vice Chancellor, 
Annamalai University, said the distance education learning involved 
correspondence and face-to-face interaction till now in over 400 courses 
offered by the university.

The online programme would help students experience regular MBA like 
environment, exposure, and hands-on skill training.

S.B. Nageswara Rao, the university's director of distance education, said the 
online MBA would be offered in marketing, financial and human resources.

The fee for the two year programme would be Rs.32,500.

Applicants could study from anywhere in the country and the only eligibility 
criteria to join the course was a degree in any subject.

Students enrolled would be given login and password to access the course 
material.

However, the exams would be conducted only at the study centres of the 
university, he said.

C.P. Gopinathan, founding director, 361DM, said the distance education would 
play a crucial role as higher education doubled over the next decade.

In fact, studies have shown that the distance education mode would double every 
year in future.

As the benchmarks were low, he said such online MBA programme could provide 
college-like experience through intelligent and creative use of technology.

I think directly pressing insert plus F11 will bring you on systemtray and 
using the arrow keys you will get the safely remove hardware button. Press 
the space bar to activate the same and hit enter. You will hear a message 
the you can safely remove the hardware. After removing it hit the alt key to 
leave the menu.

Given below is an extract from an old AI mail. Hope it will be useful for all. 
I am actively using it on Win Xp and Win7.

Create a Shortcut or Hotkey for the Safely Remove Hardware Dialog

If you often use removable USB devices like a flash drive, you are probably 
already familiar with the ?Safely Remove Hardware? icon that sits in the system 
tray. The problem for many people is that the icon is tiny, and clicking it 
just right to bring up the menu is a pain. Can't we just make a shortcut to 
bring up the dialog?

Of course you can, and it's really quite easy. Easier than trying to click the 
tiny icon in the tray, at least?

Update: This has been successfully tested on Windows 7 as well.

Create a Shortcut to the Safely Remove Hardware Dialog

Right-click anywhere on the desktop and choose New \ Shortcut:

Then paste in the following into the location box:

RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

block quote end

Give it a name, and you'll have a shortcut icon?

?that will pull up the Safely Remove Hardware dialog.

Assign a Shortcut Key

If you want to assign a shortcut key to this dialog, you can right-click the 
icon and open the properties dialog, then go to the Shortcut tab.

Add in the shortcut key and close the dialog. As long as the shortcut is on 
your desktop you shouldn't have to restart anything for the hotkey to work.
You can also move the shortcut to another folder, for instance your quick 
launch bar.

Tip: If you add the shortcut to the Windows Vista quick launch bar, you can use 
the built-in hotkeys  instead of bothering to assign one manually.

Your pendrive is effected with virus, please clean up with good anti virus

The good about this is that we should convince only one board instead
of talking to each bank individually.  I think it's better if we
approach them and propose a friendly scribe policy before they come up

Recording is not an issue, I personally use audacity, what is more 
complicated is mixing the voice where, for a good quality work and result, I 
strongly recommand Nuendo, where professional sighted help is required.

I have just purchased a del inspiron 64 bit lap top with windows 7.
Now jaws is creating a problem.
I have installed Jaws, For some time it works properly but after some
time it starts reacting late.
So if I press the down arrow to go on the next line, only after
finishing reading the current line it goes to the next line. Hence
navigation has become difficult.
So I wanted to know a couple of things.

1. Has any one been able to successfully install Jaws on a 64 bit
computer and if yes is it working properly.

Thanks to you a lot for such a quick response.
Dear sir, the suggestion you told me for my first query is an alternate. 
Isn't there any direct option for this?
I mean, every when I need to put my phone on the silent mode, I'll have to 
set the ring tone to off. But if you could help me to find any direct option 
for the same so then it'll be a shortest way of getting the same required 
result.
Because normally we can put our cellphone on the silent mode by just 
pressing and holding down the # key for few seconds and we're done.
Actually sir I've kept many songs in my memory card and it shows all those 
songs while finding the ringing tone off option. That's why it takes a bit 
more time.

Hope you'll understand this and will surely try to help me in this regard.

Secondly, Sir I can check the call duration after finishing it. But my 
requirement is to check the call duration in the mid of the call.

Is there any way for this?

I have studied accounts in Class 11 and 12, at college and during b-school.
I have never had to understand how accounts are drawn though I admit having
that knowledge would have enabled me to communicated to writers who did not
understand how to create tables. For my own work, I used a spreadsheet. I
used to create journals, profit and loss accounts etc without any problems
in the correct format. All you are doing is drawing tables. A spreadsheet is
easier to understand for a blind student since the rows and columns are
marked. That way, they can easily visualize what an account looks like. They
can also track the progression of rows and columns.

I do not see how you can do accounts in Braille unless you are
ultra-meticulous and plan your answers in advance. For instance, I used to
post journal entries into a ledger. The idea was to read the question
transaction by transaction and execute the action in that way. So, if ram
transferred cash to Shyam, I would need to create Ram's account and Shyam's
account in a  spreadsheet. So far so good. Now, further along the question,
if Shyam transferred some money to ram, you will need to insert entries in
their respective accounts.

In addition, you need to troubleshoot trial balances when they won't match.
The error is cumulative so fixing one mistake could lead to the whole thing
matching. Named ranges are helpful in quickly navigating between ledger
accounts.

I mean, every when I need to put my phone on the silent mode, I'll have to
set the ring tone to off. But if you could help me to find any direct option
for the same so then it'll be a shortest way of getting the same required

Because normally we can put our cellphone on the silent mode by just
pressing and holding down the # key for few seconds and we're done.
Actually sir I've kept many songs in my memory card and it shows all those

[AI] IBM Develops Memory 100x Faster Than Flash

IBM today announced that, for the first time, scientists at its
research arm have demonstrated that a relatively new
memory technology,
known as phase-change memory (PCM), can reliably store multiple data
bits per cell over extended periods of time.

The benefits of such a memory technology would allow computers and
servers to boot instantaneously – much faster than what even the
fastest SSD today can
do. IBM believes that PCM can write and retrieve data 100 times faster
than flash while also not losing data when the power is turned off.

Unlike flash, PCM is also very durable and can endure at least 10
million write cycles, compared to current enterprise-class flash at
30,000 cycles or consumer-class
flash at 3,000 cycles.  While 3,000 cycles will out live many consumer
devices, 30,000 cycles are orders of magnitude too low to be suitable
for enterprise
applications.

"As organizations and consumers increasingly embrace cloud-computing
models and services, whereby most of the data is stored and processed
in the cloud,
ever more powerful and efficient, yet affordable storage technologies
are needed," states Dr. Haris Pozidis, Manager of Memory and Probe
Technologies at
IBM Research – Zurich.  "By demonstrating a multi-bit phase-change
memory technology which achieves for the first time reliability levels
akin to those
required for enterprise applications, we made a big step towards
enabling practical memory devices based on multi-bit PCM."

It's big step, for sure, but don't expect flash-based storage to
suddenly get replaced by PCM. That SSD RAID configuration that you've
been lusting after
for your ultimate rig will still be the fastest storage solution for a
good while.
