Re: [AI] DJS exam announced

2011-09-25 Thread Rahul Kelapure
I was not as lucky as you, I also got a better scribe but that was
when there were 20 mins left for the completion of the exam, because
the other person was the superwiser of the exam, I think.

We can surely go to see the registrar, however, we will have to co
ordinate the same, as I no more stay in Delhi or NCR now and have
shifted to Mumbai.

I however, do intend to appear for the exam this time around as well.

I apeal all wanting to appear for the exam to come together, for not
only co ordination, but to share the reading metirial as well, as we
had done last time around, may be limited way, whom I knew.

Let's join and make this apportunity count.

Thanks and warm regards,

Re: (Keralavision) Sachin Pilot releases Text-to- Speech System in six
Indian languages including Malayalam To say the least, it has become a
fashion these days for the non-governmental as well as governmental agencies
to launch half developed products by VIP's like ministers and Give much
publicity through all the medias I don't understand what the visually
impaired comunity or any such group for that matter can benefit from such
half developed and more or less unusable software.
I can safely say this as I was one of the members of the Malayalam TTS
developing team.
I worked with CDAC for two months as tester and trainer and there were much
bugs and shortcomings in the TTS which I myself and the trainees expressed
yunanimously to the CDAC officials.
This was done a couple of months back and I don't think, they would have
fixed at least the bugs to launch the prodect still half developed.
In this context, I can't understand the importance or value of launching
such a product to which much modification and improvements were necessary.
It was told by the CDAC officials that, there will be a second face for the
development of this TTS.
We can all hope hoping against hope that, we will get something usable after
the promised second face.
However I am sure that, there will be another launching of the product in
some other pet names by some other VIP's and much media hipe if at all there
will be a second face.

Regards,

P. Balaraman.

[AI] Things To Be Taken Care Of While Trying An Online Recharge

2011-09-25 Thread Vishnu Ramchandani
Things To Be Taken Care Of While Trying An Online Recharge
By Srikapardhi

Online Recharge - The Service that makes many people to have a curve on
their face while on the other side this word itself irritates some
people leaving bad experiences.

Today we just wanted to share some tips for our beloved readers who are
willing to try an online recharge as well as for those who are facing
problems while making payment through Online Gateway, credit or Debit
cards as we have received many Comments and Problems in our previous
reviews on Online Recharge Portals.

First of all Why an Online Recharge?

1.The first and the foremost thing is convenience-Anytime Any Where.

2.The next is Time saving, we can sit and do it just at our place-Home
or office, some services even support recharge through a Mobile
Application and Payment.

3.Some Operators may provide special Talk Time and Offers if an Online
Recharge is done through their site.

Which Operators are providing an online Recharge Service?

Starting from Government owned Network BSNL almost all Operators are
providing online Recharge facilities except Uninor. But we are sure that
very soon Uninor also comes up with an Online Recharge Portal. But each
operator differs in their service and style of providing the service.
These Online Recharge service provided by the respective operators are a
free service while some Online Recharge portals charge a minimal fees
for the service. This depends on your selection.

Things you should be taken care of before trying an Online Recharge.

1.Never ever try Online Recharges for the first time with High Recharge
Values, if anything goes wrong you will be messed up again so have a
trail recharge with lesser amounts available.

2.Even though all the Browsers support secure payment Gateway always use
Internet Explorer (mostly preferred) and the next preferred is Mozilla
Firefox followed by Opera because there needed some redirection and
scripts that need action between web pages from payment gateway to
recharge portal redirection which the latest or beta browsers have no
enhanced support inbuilt.

3.Always use an Antivirus/Spyware program and ensure that your system is
Virus/spyware free before you make any online payment, also make sure
that there are no active Key loggers in your system because they may
track the username and passwords which you keystroke into the portal.

4) Never dare to try any online Recharge on Public or Share computers
unless you take the whole responsibility and aware of the circumstances.

5) Never Press F5 or Refresh your page while you are in the middle of a
transaction, this makes your entire transaction which is a pipelined
process to go wrong or fail.

6) Be sure to check if the connection is secure or not by observing the
address link (usually a lock symbol) else you may be landed on a
phishing page.

7) Ensure that you have a good Working Internet Connectivity at the time
of recharge, sometimes you can feel your ISP is be down with slow page
loading experiences, avoid recharges during those times.

8 ) Always note down the transaction details, so that they come in handy
in case of failed transactions.

9) And the last thing is proceed only if everything is under your
control.

Just some more points:

No Online recharge Service provider or portal will cheat their "Valuable
Customers" with failed recharge transactions wantedly because there is
no individual who is sitting at the system and processing your Recharge
Payment Requests 24X7 and decide to make your Recharges successful or
fail.

It's all a Computer operated process that does automatically from the
website side, but there will be human people who give support for your
failed transactions. So, leave the belief that it is the website
cheating customers. We have used many Online Recharge Portals and now
once again our experience confirms that No System is neither 100%
Perfect nor bad. It depends on the steps and measures you follow. Also
everything should be good from the payment side too for you recharge to
be successful.

If there is any failed transaction (Power failure or any other problem
with payment) there will an alternate backup channel both from the bank
side as well as from the Website's side so that they get information
regarding the failed transactions separately.

This process usually takes about 3-7 days as the backup channel data is
not always available with the Recharge Portal. They take this data in
failed groups and this takes time. Also for the Refund of your money
even though the Recharge portal reverts the amount within 3-4 days it
takes time for your bank to give a statement for the refund as all the
refunds will have another channel working for them.

And we are sorry to say that under some worst situations in very rare
cases during payment redirection when the communication between the
Portal and your payment bank is lost after payment is made, your
recharge data will not be recorded and you have no proof of Rechar

Extremely sorry folks. I am certainly not intending to steal the
thunder of this interesting thread. However, as a token of my
gratitude for the effective English communication skills that I've
learned from Shadab Ji's blog, I am just giving a thesaurus meaning
for the word "Cruising" on behalf.
"cruising" refers to traveling on a constant speed, without any
hurry. We can also say something like cruising towards victory,
cruising towards hope etc.. Sorry for the unnecessary interruption,
please carry-on folks. Thank You.

 Sincerely Yours,

Sathiyaprakash.

Same is the situation for the Hindi TTS. The product that has been launched

Subject: [AI] my observations of the newly released TTS.

Regards,

P. Balaraman.

If yes, then how and from where can I get the same?

And, it is also available in audio format...

It was produced by Sri Sathya Sai Organisation and was aired some years
back on the radio service called radio sai global harmony. the shlokas
are first chanted in the original sanskrit and then you can hear their
meaning in english.

i think it can still be downloadable from their site at www.radiosai.org

or DVDs / CDs can be bought from the Sri Sathya Sai Books Trust,
Puttaparthi.

Dear all,
a month ago, I had the same query to the list and got a very useful tip
from Mr. Bhavani Shankerverma.
It was to put the lame.dll file to the system 32 folder in windows and it
worked well.

This I did with a desktop.
Now I am facing the same problem with my laptop after doing the above
mentioned step.
Even after copying the dll file inside the system32 folder, Kurzweil is
still saying "Sorry!" No compressing software is installed in your
computer.
I have installed k-light which will give all the media codex and the
latest winamp.

What should I do more?
Hope, Bhavaniji will help me again in this regard.

Thanks in advance,

sir, outlook express has withdrawn by microsoft. however, if you are using
windows 7 professional you will get windows live mail bundeled in it. if
not, download it from the following link. the commands are same as outlook
express we used previously. jaws will also support windows live mail. also
you need not to configure your mail account manually, windows mail will ask
your email ID and it will automatically configure your account. here is the
direct download link.

[AI] my observations of the newly released TTS.

2011-09-25 Thread Balaram
Re: (Keralavision) Sachin Pilot releases Text-to- Speech System in six
Indian languages including Malayalam
To say the least, it has become a fashion these days for the
non-governmental as well as governmental agencies to launch half
developed products by VIP's

like ministers and Give much publicity through all the medias
I don't understand what the visually impaired comunity or any such group
for that matter can benefit from such half developed and more or less
unusable

software.
I can safely say this as I was one of the members of the Malayalam TTS
developing team.
I worked with CDAC for two months as tester and trainer and there were
much bugs and shortcomings in the TTS which I myself and the trainees
expressed

yunanimously to the CDAC officials.
This was done a couple of months back and I don't think, they would have
fixed at least the bugs to launch the prodect still half developed.
In this context, I can't understand the importance or value of launching
such a product to which much modification and improvements were necessary.
It was told by the CDAC officials that, there will be a second face for
the development of this TTS.
We can all hope hoping against hope that, we will get something usable
after the promised second face.
However I am sure that, there will be another launching of the product
in some other pet names by some other VIP's and much media hipe if at
all there

will be a second face.

Regards,

P. Balaraman.

By Daniel Pinto | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA

Heinrich Wagner is a visually impaired man, one who has brazenly
performed numerous feats that would reduce most 'normal' human beings
to quivering, cowering messes. Apart from participating in several
endurance-testing marathons, the Capetonian has broken two land speed
records, sky-dived from a height of 10,000 feet and bungee-jumped from
one of the highest bridges in the world. Apart from cycling solo for
39km, Wagner has completed the 2011 ABSA Cape Epic (regarded as the
Tour de France of mountain biking). Wagner took part in the Hong Kong
Iron Man in 2006, completing 180km on a tandem bicycle in extreme
weather conditions. He also tried his hand, successfully, at
mountaineering and rafting. Oh, and he played in the 1998 blind
cricket World Cup, which his side won.

DNA's Daniel Pinto spoke to this indefatigable and unvanquished
individual who is also a sought-after motivational speaker and was in
Mumbai last week to address a gathering of top business executives.
Excerpts:

It’s natural for people to dwell on things they can’t change and
attribute their failures to it. What made you different?
I was born blind. For 25 years I was cross with god, the universe.
Eighteen years ago I set sail on a 28-day journey from Cape Town to
Rio [de Janeiro] with two blind mates and a hearing-impaired skipper.
It was there that I experienced this big, beautiful world and realised
that I was so small in the universe. It was then that I decided to
live a full life and stop feeling sorry for myself and blaming the
world for the fact that I couldn’t see.

What made you go in for adrenaline-pumping, physically challenging sports?
It started out with me wanting to show the world, but then it came
full circle after it became an option to market the abilities of
differently abled people.

I founded an organisation, VisionTree, in 2004 and all the adventurous
activities I tackle are to fund it. After I completed a race on a
tandem, the organisation was able to put six blind girls through six
months of computer training. And the adrenaline rush, of course, is
probably the closest I get to the sensation of sight.

How do you deal with the concerns of family and friends about your
physical well being?
I respect them very much. I care for them, which is why when I’m about
to face danger, I surround myself with professionals and people in the
know, like terrain experts. When I broke the land speed record for the
second time (after Wagner became the first South African to break a
world land speed record in 2005, he went on to break the world blind
land speed record by averaging a speed of 322.5kph in 2009), I
consulted a professional racer in the UK and drove a Mercedes SL65 AMG
which is a safe car.

Adventure sports will always be risky. The element of risk adds to the
adventure. My family has always been very supportive. When I broke the
land speed record, it was two weeks before my wedding, and my wife was
there at the event. So you can imagine!

When it comes to making judgments and decisions, a lot depends on
visual input. What system have you developed to aid you in your
endeavours?
Most of it comes from feeling. I’m good at picking things up through
my senses. I’ve used my gut feeling. And, of course, I make mistakes,
but that’s why I travel. If you travel across different countries and
experience different cultures, it expands your point of view and your
frames of reference.

How was your last visit to India?
The last time I was in your country it was for the 1998 blind cricket
World Cup in Delhi. I was playing for South Africa and there was huge
support from the local crowd because we were up against Pakistan in
the final.

Are you a spiritual person?
Yes, very much so. I think I am guided by my spirit. I believe in my
instinct. I try to be in balance with my spiritual side. I spend time
thinking about where I am at and I consider my opportunities.

Tell us about your autobiographical show ‘Bat Magic’ that you perform
at art festivals.
The main driving force behind the show, which started in 2003, was to
show the lighter side of living in darkness. The show managed to put
across humour. It was very well received and when corporate
presentations came along I was able to reuse material. Incidentally,
the festival we launched the in 2003 was the place where I met my wife
Melindi.

[AI] Fwd: New Sonar Designed To Help Blind People

Hi all,

New Sonar Designed To Help Blind People
September 24, 2011
by newtec

We've seen a number of devices - such as the UltraCane and EYE 21
system - that combine sonar and haptic or audio feedback to let the
visually impaired "see" their surroundings through the senses of touch
or hearing. Tacit is a similar device that also uses sonar to measure
the distance to objects and provide users with a 'view" of their
surroundings through haptic feedback. But unlike previous devices
we've looked at, Tacit is mounted on the wrist so it doesn't impair a
user's hearing or interfere with the use of other assistance devices
such as canes.

The prototype Tacit device developed by Steve Hoefer at Grathio Labs
consists of four ultrasonic range finding sensors connected to a
microcontroller that calculates the distance to objects by reading how
long it takes for the ultrasonic pulses to return to the device. The
distances are then translated into force feedback on the back of the
user's wrist through servo motors, with the force of the pressure
indicating how near or far the detected objects are. By waving their
arm around an area, the wearer is able to get the lay of the land and
navigate complex environments.

In coming up with the prototype Hoefer says he considered various
designs and the use of various technologies. His initial version was a
headband that had ultrasonic sensors and vibration motors embedded
around its circumference. However, he found that the most dangerous
obstacles weren't positioned at head level and that having vibrating
motors pounding against your skull isn't the most enjoyable
experience. Placing the device on the hand also lets the wearer easily
point it in any direction.

He also experimented with infrared sensors, which are smaller and
easier to focus than the ultrasonic sensors, but interference from
sunlight, remote controls, security cameras and absorbent surfaces
confused the sensors. He says he will do some more tests with infrared
using different wavelengths and polarizing filters, but for the time
being the ultrasonic sensors, which have a range of 1-inch to 10 feet
(2.5 cm to 3 m), are the most cost effective option. Lasers, which
would be the most accurate, were also rejected as being too expensive.

Hoefer also went through a number of iterations in designing the
gauntlet that supports the electronics. To allow the wearer to retain
their sense of touch in not only their fingers but also their palm,
gloves were rejected in favor of a design that uses a loop that slips
over the wearer's middle finger and a Velcro wrist strap. The
resultant one-size-fits-all prototype, which is made from neoprene, is
easy to put on and can be worn on the left or right hand.

Although Hoefer admits the current Tacit prototype isn't perfect and
is a little bulky, he says it works and could easily be made to be
about half the current size. Additionally, the replaceable batteries
currently used to power the device would be replaced with rechargeable
batteries with a blind-friendly charging method, such as wireless
induction charging or a magnetically-aligning power plug.

One of Hoefer's main aims in developing an assistance device for the
visually impaired was to keep the costs down. With the cost of the
materials used in his prototype totaling around US$65 he seems to have
achieved this goal.

Hoefer says he will continue to refine the device and provides
instructions on how to build Tacit on the Tacit Project page. He has
also released the Tacit circuit and software under a Creative Commons
BY-NC-SA license.
