We will have to wait another 6 months for the Apple I-phone5 to be released.
meanwhile, Apple has just released the IOS5 which is the upgrade software
for its current I-Phone4 and 4s models.

VoiceOver is just too good and there are hardly any accessibility issues.
You can also use the Apple bluetooth keyboard with the I-phone for added
freedom and flexibility.

You may contact me off the list for more info.

'Smart cane' to guide visually impaired in hills

Ashwani Sharma

Shimla Developed by IIT-Delhi, stick to have sensors to alert danger,
also inform size, shape, type of obstacles
White canes will soon be passe. Now, visually impaired persons can
depend on smart stick to guide them through hills and crowded roads.
Fixed with sensors, it will alert the user about the lurking danger
via vibrations and also inform about the size, shape and type of
obstacles.

Developed by IIT-Delhi with the help of Delhi-based NGO Saksham, the
first phase of week-long trials of smart cane for the hills involving
six students, including three Class XI girls of local Portmore School,
ended here on Friday.

A smart cane for the blind was already at final stage after the
trials done at major cities like Delhi, Ahmedabad, Chennai and
Dehradun. This smart stick is plain, developed with the help of
pharmaceutical company Phoenix Medical Systems. There requirements of
the blind in the hills are very different as these places have
problems like deep gorge, cliffs, mountainous paths, hair-pin curves,
narrow passages and depths. Here, we needed a smart cane addressing
all these issues, said Ajai Srivastava, head of Umang Foundation-a
organisation working for the blind.

Yogesh Taneja, a software developer and visually impaired, working on
the project said, Smart cane being designed for the blind will make a
seachange in their lives and would help them to navigate mountain
roads. If there is a sharp cliff, curve or depth, sensors will send
vibrations to the user about the danger.

Some of the students-three of them from blind school at Dhalli in
Shimla and the three girls- sounded excited about the smart cane.

We get injured while walking as sticks or white cane we use doesn't
alerts us about the objects above knee height. However, the smart cane
will start sending vibrations about the object up to 3 metres, thus
giving us a response time, said Bhupesh.

Anisha said they should develop a can that spells out the danger
rather than just sending vibrations, as it will be more useful.

In the second phase of trials, the students will it for 15 days and
the team will return after a fortnight and get their feedback.

Bhupesh said some of the devices available in foreign countries cost
up to Rs 40,000 and are unaffordable.

The effort of the organisation-Saksham-is to make it affordable. The
white cane in India costs between Rs 60 and Rs 200. This stick could
be a little higher maybe around Rs 2,000, he said.

The smart cane will determine the object that is in front of the user
and depending on its nature-whether tall or short, and level from the
body (head or knee level). There there will be different combinations
of long and short vibrations on the handle of the stick.

Dennis M. Ritchie, who helped shape the modern digital era by
creating software tools that power things as diverse as search engines
like Google and smartphones, was found dead on Wednesday at his home
in Berkeley Heights, N.J. He was 70.

Victoria Will/Associated Press Images for Japan Prize Foundation
Dennis Ritchie received the 2011 Japan Prize in May.
Mr. Ritchie, who lived alone, was in frail health in recent years
after treatment for prostate cancer and heart disease, said his
brother Bill.

In the late 1960s and early ’70s, working at Bell Labs, Mr. Ritchie
made a pair of lasting contributions to computer science. He was the
principal designer of the C programming language and co-developer of
the Unix operating system, working closely with Ken Thompson, his
longtime Bell Labs collaborator.

The C programming language, a shorthand of words, numbers and
punctuation, is still widely used today, and successors like C++ and
Java build on the ideas, rules and grammar that Mr. Ritchie designed.
The Unix operating system has similarly had a rich and enduring
impact. Its free, open-source variant, Linux, powers many of the
world’s data centers, like those at Google and Amazon, and its
technology serves as the foundation of operating systems, like Apple’s
iOS, in consumer computing devices.

“The tools that Dennis built — and their direct descendants — run
pretty much everything today,” said Brian Kernighan, a computer
scientist at Princeton University who worked with Mr. Ritchie at Bell
Labs.

Those tools were more than inventive bundles of computer code. The C
language and Unix reflected a point of view, a different philosophy of
computing than what had come before. In the late ’60s and early ’70s,
minicomputers were moving into companies and universities — smaller
and at a fraction of the price of hulking mainframes.

Minicomputers represented a step in the democratization of computing,
and Unix and C were designed to open up computing to more people and
collaborative working styles. Mr. Ritchie, Mr. Thompson and their Bell
Labs colleagues were making not merely software but, as Mr. Ritchie
once put it, “a system around which fellowship can form.”

C was designed for systems programmers who wanted to get the fastest
performance from operating systems, compilers and other programs. “C
is not a big language — it’s clean, simple, elegant,” Mr. Kernighan
said. “It lets you get close to the machine, without getting tied up
in the machine.”

Such higher-level languages had earlier been intended mainly to let
people without a lot of programming skill write programs that could
run on mainframes. Fortran was for scientists and engineers, while
Cobol was for business managers.

C, like Unix, was designed mainly to let the growing ranks of
professional programmers work more productively. And it steadily
gained popularity. With Mr. Kernighan, Mr. Ritchie wrote a classic
text, “The C Programming Language,” also known as “K. R.” after the
authors’ initials, whose two editions, in 1978 and 1988, have sold
millions of copies and been translated into 25 languages.

Dennis MacAlistair Ritchie was born on Sept. 9, 1941, in Bronxville,
N.Y. His father, Alistair, was an engineer at Bell Labs, and his
mother, Jean McGee Ritchie, was a homemaker. When he was a child, the
family moved to Summit, N.J., where Mr. Ritchie grew up and attended
high school. He then went to Harvard, where he majored in applied
mathematics.

While a graduate student at Harvard, Mr. Ritchie worked at the
computer center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and
became more interested in computing than math. He was recruited by the
Sandia National Laboratories, which conducted weapons research and
testing. “But it was nearly 1968,” Mr. Ritchie recalled in an
interview in 2001, “and somehow making A-bombs for the government
didn’t seem in tune with the times.”

Mr. Ritchie joined Bell Labs in 1967, and soon began his fruitful
collaboration with Mr. Thompson on both Unix and the C programming
language. The pair represented the two different strands of the
nascent discipline of computer science. Mr. Ritchie came to computing
from math, while Mr. Thompson came from electrical engineering.

“We were very complementary,” said Mr.

Re: [AI] Is Whatsapp accessible

Hi Apoorv,

Talks does not read the incoming messages in Whatsapp. But, there is a work
around, you can go into options and select copy message and then paste that
message in some other place to read it, for example, notes or a new sms
message or anything of that type that you find convenient. This makes us
slow in responding. Hope something is done about it in the next Talks
update.

Thanks.

Re: [AI] Request for Explaining about Filter Command in Excel

2011-10-15 Thread Zujar Shabbir Kanchwala
Hi,

Ms Excel provides 2 ways of filtering data.

1. Auto Filter
2. Advanced Filter

You need to select data that needs to be filtered before applying a filter.

The Auto Filter option (Data Filter Auto Filter) is useful for
filtering data on single column. When you select this option, it
creates a drop-down list on top of selected columns. Place the cursor
on the header cell of the auto filter column and press ALT+DOWN to
open the list of options available for filtering on that column. The
list of options differ depending the type of column like Text,
Numbers, etc.

Note that you can apply filter on multiple columns. If you apply a
filter on column 1 and then column 2 then the filter on column 1 is
retained. If you wish to apply a filter on column 2 without the one on
column 1 then remove the filter on column 1.

The Advanced Filter is useful when you wish to filter data wuth a
complex logic. For example, consider the Employee list as in the Excel
sheet (cell range A1:H11) at the following URL (I have uploaded the
test data file on sendspace as it cannot be attached with this email):

http://www.sendspace.com/file/9hb1hl

Now if you are asked to fetch list of employees in the Sales
department having 2 or more reportees and in the Marketing department
having 5 or more employees, then enter filtering criteria as in the
cell range K1:L3.

Select cell range A1:H11. For this, press CTRL+G to open the GoTo
dialog box. Enter A1:H11 and press Enter.

Select Data Filter Advanced Filter. Enter the following values in
the Advanced Filter dialog box:

List Range: $A$1:$$11 (this field would be populated by default if you
have selected the range)
Criteria Range: K1:L3 (the $ sign would be appended by Excel)

Activate the OK button and you can see rows of data meeting the
specified criteria.

Note that the Show All option helps you unhide all rows of data that
were hidden due to filtering.

Hope this gives you some idea of what Filtering in Excel is all about.
