Re: [AI] New training on accessible mobile phoneapplications announced

2012-04-19 Thread Prashant Ranjan Verma

 Dear Mr. Singh,
You will have to make payments for travel & stay of two resource persons.
You may charge some fees from the participants to cover some costs. Here in
Delhi we plan to ask for Rs. 300 each and hope to manage food expenses,
venue charges, training material printing cost & honorarium for trainers
within it.

It's a very good initiative. If I gather about 10 to 15 participants, wwill
it be possible in my area? i.e. Saha Ambala? What would be the charges per
person?-Please, elaborate. What type of other arrangements are required?

[AI] To begin and end with 4 laws...NAC RPwD document feedback (accessible version)

2012-04-19 Thread Vaishnavi Jayakumar
*ACCESSIBLE VERSION

*
*
Attachment Can Be Viewed And Downloaded here :bit.ly/4LawsPdf
*
*View Attachment Accessible text-only version here :bit.ly/FourLaws*

(*These comments are restricted to areas chosen by NAC as key concerns of
the sector. If anything is unclear please contact me for clarifications.)*

7. Penalties : Far too many identity-based structures, penalties and
committees with too little action... Consolidate commonalities. Simplify!
(see eom)

6. Institutions for Enforcement : Ditto

5. Poverty and Exclusion : A very narrow definition of poverty and
exclusion! Also limited - an aged man even with family is not immune to
abuse / exploitation / neglect / exclusion. See eom.

4. Special versus Integrated Education : I'm with Smitha on this. Sometimes
change needs to be forced for it to happen (eg: desegregation busing in USA
schools). Choice should always be present, but an inclusive school should
be the norm, any other type of schooling a choice. There is a case for
co-locating inclusive and special schools so that groups are not totally
isolated while still maintaining their autonomy,

3. Legal Capacity for the disabled : *Capacity is defined as an
individual's ability to make an informed decision. The distinction between *
*Clinical vs Legal vs mental vs physical capacity has not been explored.
Nor has the area of active vs passive capacity.*

PERSON LACKING LEGAL CAPACITY IS DISABLED, BUT NOT ALL DISABLED PEOPLE LACK
LEGAL CAPACITY - We are all born with legal capacity... a disability alone
does not indicate a lack of capacity.
Legal Capacity is measured on a sliding scale *-* (it can alternately
evolve, devolve, fluctuate, regress, be temporary or long-term) *-*
with different
levels of capacity required for different decisions.

Loss of legal capacity is possible for every human - and is not exclusively
the domain of the disability sector.
Also the connection between crime and diminished capacity indicates the
need for addressing this concept *in a separate legal domain *(along with
supported, surrogate / substituted decision making and guardianship) on the
lines of UK’s Mental Capacity Act.

Additionally, this draft has failed to address the spectrum of difference
extant between the legal concept of competence (degree of mental faculties
at a point of time, necessary to make decisions about a specific issue or
to carry out a specific act) and capacity (as in capacity to give informed
consent for medical treatment, make life choices, conduct financial
transactions etc). *Legal capacity as a concept seems to have been
incorrectly conflated with the legal concept of competence !*

I have though long and hard about legal capacity and have now reached the
conclusion that since there there will also be non-disabled people who will
need protection in this area *and* there is no law currently which
effectively addresses this concept in India; *legal capacity** needs to be
exhaustively tackled in a separate domain,* See eom.
* *

2. Definitional issues: Medical and Social Models:

If a temporary disability is not covered by this law, then where will this
groups needs be addressed ? The disabled activist shuns health related
discussion as health invariably addresses prevention which is a big taboo
for disabled people.

The RPwD Bill has a disappointingly* blinkered view of what constitutes
disability. Just how mental illness can be very disabling, there are
several other chronic debilitating medical conditions which disable far
more than some people with impairments. Autoimmune conditions, cancer,
ESRD, - the list of medical disabilities is endless.*

An illness is not a disability. An impairment is not identical to a
disability.

Both illness and impairment may CAUSE disability - whether fluctuating,
temporary, permanent or chronic in nature. Whether hidden, assumed,
invisible, unrecognized, social or medical.

Whatever one calls it the experience is the same.

1. Single or multiple laws

*From what I understand the call for a unified law is born from activists'
frustration over a decade's experience of being shunted from office to
office for work that never gets done without maximum effort, protesting
and fighting for ridiculously small victories. Time and again.* It is felt
that it's the right concept for India currently, given the lack of
substantive progress in the sector's goals. Perhaps once the simplicity in
structure yields basic results in core disability areas, the umbrella law may
naturally evolve multiple subordinate legislations for specialised needs.

There's a lot of insecurity about identity... How can there be no mental
health act is what the mental health sector believes. When I suggested
scrapping a rights-based disability law in favour of a general
anti-discrimination law on the lines of UK's Equality Act - disabled
activists were equally resistant to the idea of 'giving up their law.'

EOM* : *
*
*
*What if we begin and end with 4 laws?*

*Instead of

We often can't think with out the terms of profit and lose. Why Mahatmaji
fought for the fredom? Why he refuse to hold any office in government? What was
the financial benefit? Does this last question seems to be sound. Ofcourse the
webcite owners need money to run it. But they will have there own sources like
classifides and so on. But we can't say that all activities are financially
motivated.

2012-04-19 Thread Divyanshu Ganatra
Dear Shoma,
I can understand your curiosity. However, since we are currently in
alpha testing, I'm not in a position to disclose the business model
which enables us to provide this service for free. This is just one of
the many offerings to come from Poochh.com in the near future.
I can garantee one thing though, that all our services wil be free for
the end user. We will be shortly going public, and disclosing our
revenue model.

Until then appreciate if you continue to ask questions on Poochh and
give us your valuable feedback to improve our service.
Thanks

[AI] your questions answered

2012-04-19 Thread sanjay

EXPERT COMPUTING ADVICE

CHRIS BYERS TACKLES READERS HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE CONUNDRUMS

DATE DOES NOT TALLY

Q. Each time I turn on my PC I have to reset the time and date, which

appears as

Jan 2006. Why can't my PC remember this setting? F Brocklehurst

The most likely cause for this is a dead or low Bios battery. This

will need

replacing if your PC is to remember these settings when not powered

from the

mains. A new battery will cost you about ukp3 from any electrical

store. Take

your old battery with you to ensure you get the correct one.

HAMSTER RUNABOUT

Q. I downloaded and later uninstalled the free Hamster video

converter. When I

next started up the PC, I got this error message: 'Windows cannot find

tmonitor.exe. Raymond Bisset

Tmonitor is part of the Sony Ericsson PC Companion application. If

it's been

damaged during the removal of Hamster, you should uninstall it and

then

reinstall the latest version from tinyurl.com slash 6ykpl83.

You can also use Msconfig. Type msconfig into the Start menu Search

box and

press Enter. Select the Startup tab and find and deselect Tmonitor.exe

in the

list. Click Apply and reboot.

CLIPBOARD CONFUSION

Q. Clipboard utility on my Dell Windows 7 PC regularly fills up and

stops

working. In the past, restarting the machine would fix the problem. It

now

refuses to work after adding only one or two items to it. Patrick

Lowin

We've seen several complaints online about Windows 7's Clipboard

behaving

incorrectly. If you haven't already done so, you should first install

Windows 7

Service Pack 1. This is available via Windows Update.

The Clipboard running out of space could be an indicator of low hard-

disk space

or not enough system RAM. You should treat 2GB as the minimum amount

of RAM

required for Windows 7 to function correctly; a hard drive upgrade -

or moving

some items on to an external drive - may also be in order if you're

running low

on disk space.

Also note that there's more than one Clipboard. Windows utility can

hold only

one item, whereas the Office Clipboard can hold up to 24. Several free

Clipboard

managers are also available.

If you're still experiencing problems, more information will be

required for

diagnosis.

LAPTOP WON'T START UP

Q. My 18-month-old laptop reports the following error message at

startup:

'broadcom base code PXe-e61: media test failure, check cable PXe-mof:

exiting

broadcom PXe.rom. operating system not found. I can get into the bios

by

pressing f2, but I don't know what to do from there. Graham Shorter

It looks as though your hard drive may have failed. It's also possible

that the

Windows boot partition may have become corrupted. Run the Windows

recovery disc

supplied with the PC and use the options offered. Do not reinstall

Windows -

you'll lose your data.

If you still can't boot into Windows, enter the Bios and check that

the boot

order gives priority to the hard drive, followed by the CD slash DVD

drive. Then

try removing and reconnecting the SATA cable that connects your hard

drive to

the motherboard (see your laptop's manual for instructions).

If this fails, call Acer and have it fix your laptop under warranty.

If you no

longer have a valid warranty, you'll need to buy and install a new

hard drive,

then reinstall Windows on it. Use a drive caddy to try to recover any

data from

the old drive.

WORD'S GONE AWOL

Q. Microsoft Word's main toolbar seems to have gone AWOL on my

netbook.

I can recover it by clicking on the Home tab, but it disappears as

soon as I

click on the document. I can't find a setting to prevent this. Peter W

Emsely

It may be that the toolbar (also known as the 'Ribbon) has been set to

auto-hide. This is usually initialised by right-clicking any part of

the toolbar

and selecting the option to 'Minimise the Ribbon. To restore the

toolbar, simply

right-click the tab for an open document and clear this option.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I'M GONE?

Q. My website contains the only accounts of several historical events.

I'm 77

years old, and wonder what will happen to these pages once I shuffle

off this

mortal coil and fail to keep up payments to my ISP. Please advise.

James Briggs

This is a common worry for web aficionados. What happens to important

web-based

historical data that's maintained by people who are suddenly no longer

around?

You have two options. The first is to pass on the domain to a trusted

relative

who will maintain the website on your behalf. The second (free) option

is to

upload the articles to Wikipedia for all to see. For some advice on

getting

started, see tinyurl.com slash ydtuwsg.

FAULTY GRAPHICS CARD

Q. I suspect my five-year-old PC has a faulty graphics card, which

produces

various error messages and freeze-ups. the most frequent errors

reported are

'Driver stuck in

 Hi,

You need not connect using the application provided by your service
provider. You can use basic windows service of dial up connection and it
 is
 fully accessible.

It is by default set once u have installed it. Go to network connections
 and
u ll find it there. At the most u need to enter your access number as
 user
name and password both in dial up connection settings.

 Regards,

 Kiran S Deshpande.

could connect through key bourd though JAWS was silent in these windows.

here i want reviews from all of those who are currently using this

and also what are the current unlock models which are accessible.

Re: [AI] OCR CONVERTER

2012-04-19 Thread Shreedhar TS.
Hi, If you need OCR while using any inaccessible application with
NVDA, then visit http://stormdragon.us/nvda/ and download OCR plugin
for NVDA and refer "readme" in the archive. However, I don't know much
about its working abilities.

Re: [AI] Screen readdr

2012-04-19 Thread Uma VR
good evening Access Indians,

it is a request to all of my friends.
please try to write the full words when you are asking any questions
or while you are giving reply to the questions.
I think many of the late blind had habituated to write short forms
instead of writing full words.
since we are fully dependent on screen readers, it is not reading
properly what is the exact word.
we cannot tell this to a sighted because they cannot understand why we
are saying this. but, I think all of us can understand why I am saying
this.

many of the questions and answers are helping me a lot to learn many
new things.
but, due to short forms, sometimes, I am not able to understand some
of the querries as well as answers.

so, friends, please try to write full words.

sorry if it hurts any of you.

Hi Anish,
if you have theoriticle books those can be easily read by performing
OCR with find reader or omnipage. But if you have those which include
special mathematical symbles and diagrams then any OCR can't benefit
you 100% you will have to get those books recorded in human voice.

Hi Anish,
Being a late blind I will advice you to go through a rehabilitation
training from any institute which provides such type of trainings to
visually challanged people. It should include computer skills with
jaws or other screen readers, adaptation of blindness in your life,
and some necessary daily living skills. Please don't mind it is just a
suggestion.

[AI] your questions answered

2012-04-19 Thread sanjay

FAULTY GRAPHICS DRIVERS

Q I recently bought a Palicomp PC running Windows 7 64bit and a 512MB

ATI Radeon

HD 5450 graphics card. The screen frequently freezes and reports the

error

message: 'Display Driver 'AMD driver' stopped responding and has

successfully

recovered'.

Disabling the ATI drivers fixes the problem, but also removes some

functionality. Palicomp advised me to uninstall and reinstall the

drivers, but

this didn't solve the problem. A Google search for answers has

revealed several

other users of this graphics card with the same problem. Is there a

definitive

fix, please? Richard Thompson

Palicomp has assured us that your specific problem is down to a faulty

graphics

card. It will be sending you a replacement card. However, since this

appears to

be a common issue, the following suggestions may be of use to other

readers.

This error message often pops up when graphics-card drivers haven't

been

completely uninstalled and Windows is still trying to use the old

driver.

First, download the latest driver for your graphics card from ati.com

- but

don't install it yet. Click Start, Control Panel, Program and

Features, then

remove the old driver and restart the machine.

Next, type Device Manager in the Start menu Search bar to bring up the

Device

Manager. Expand the entry for 'Display adaptors' and double-click your

graphics

card to reveal its Properties. Click the Driver tab and jot down the

version

noted there.

Click 'Uninstall' and select 'Delete the driver software for this

device'. Click

Ok and restart the computer.

Allow Windows to install the generic ATI driver when it starts up,

then head

back to the Device Manager and compare the driver version numbers. If

it's the

same as before, you'll need to repeat this process. Install the new

driver and

restart the PC.

If this doesn't fix your problem, check that any onboard graphics

chips are

disabled in the Bios. You should also update the Bios and motherboard

drivers.

MEMoRY UPGRADE ISSUE

Q I want to increase the memory in my six-year-old XP PC from 1GB to

2GB to

accommodate Windows 7, but keep getting Memtest errors with the pair

of 512MB

modules I'm using. I receive multiple error reports when I install

them, plus

stop errors or sudden shutdowns. The machine seems happy to run three

RAM

modules, but not four.

Crucial advised me to increase the VDIMM from 2.5 to 2.7, which made

no

difference, and reduce the memory frequency from DDR400 to DDR333

(adjusted to

320MHz), which solves the problem. Why are these problems occurring

and how can

I run the memory at the correct frequency? Will I need to upgrade my

motherboard

and processor to install Windows 7? Charlie Horne

If your PC has no problem recognising three RAM modules, swap them

around to

find out whether one of your four slots or Dimms isn't functioning

correctly.

(It's unlikely to be the original ones, since the PC was working

previously.)

If no problems are found, it may be that the new RAM modules are

incompatible

with the existing ones. Each module you use must have the same clock

speed.

Ensure you have the latest version of your Bios installed, too.

Your motherboard can accept up to 4GB (4 x 1GB) of RAM. Consider

upgrading your

machine using four new 1GB modules rather than two 512MB sticks. This

will be

more expensive, but it will afford twice the amount of memory and

ensure

compatibility.

Once you've successfully installed the extra RAM, you may want to

consider a new

motherboard - it's likely to offer better graphics and sound than you

have

currently.

PRInTInG FRoM WInDoWS 7

Q I want to use my new Windows 7 Home Premium PC with my Canon i865

printer, but

I can't find a driver for it. Harry Beard

There is a driver available for your printer, Harry. Canon also has a

Windows 7

product page for your printer ( tinyurl.com/2 grams j7rh). Choose

Windows 7 as

the operating system and English as the language.

To check your printer is set up correctly, click Start, Devices and

Printers. If

your printer is listed, right-click it and select 'Set as default

printer'. If

it isn't listed, change the USB cable.

As a 10-year-old printer, it's had a very good innings. We were

pleasantly

surprised to find Canon still provides updated drivers. However, it's

unlikely

that Canon will offer direct support for the i865.

pASS IT ON: QUICkEN ON WINDOWS 7

In your January issue ( page 102) Edward Powell had a query about

installing

Quicken on a Windows 7 PC.

I've had exactly the same problem, even using the final release CD

that was sent

out before Quicken was discontinued. The only solution that worked for

me was to

copy the entire Quicken folder from Program Files on an XP or Vista

machine and

use that.

on the few occasions that I've needed to reset my Windows 7 PC to it

[AI] Keeping control of the situation

2012-04-19 Thread sanjay
CARRIE-ANN SKINNER demonstrates parental controls with Windows Live Family

Safety, free software that helps keep your children safe from the dangers of
the

web.

The web has transformed the way we communicate and find information. It's an

ideal resource whether you're looking for reviews of an item or service
you've

got your eye on or for schoolchildren to research a homework topic. It's
also

great for keeping in touch. Teens can chat to their friends on Facebook
without

tying up the landline or running up hefty mobile phone bills.

However, the web also presents a wealth of dangers - ones that kids aren't

necessarily clued-up to handle. The prospect of your children being bullied
in

chat rooms and on social networks or stumbling across inappropriate images
are

the headline-grabbing threats, but there are other dangers to look out for
too.

Malware can accidentally be downloaded, and it's all too easy for them to
hand

over more personal details than they should.

The tricky thing is to keep your kids safe without preventing them from
using

the web altogether.

Parental-control software lets you filter and block specific sites and web
pages

that contain inappropriate material. It also lets you monitor what your kids

have been up to on a PC, and restrict which programs they use and how long
they

spend on the PC. Microsoft offers free parental-control software in the form
of

Windows Live Family Safety.

In Windows 7, the parental controls theme is continued in Windows Media
Center.

Here, you can restrict TV programmes and films using age ratings, preventing

your 11-year-old watching 18-rated movies, for example.

We can't stress enough the importance of discussing with children how they
can

stay safe on the web. Not only will the communication help them understand
why

certain sites are blocked, it'll help them think twice before taking
unnecessary

risks online.

IT'S good To TAlK

Parental controls help keep your children safe online, but it's important
that

you discuss with them the dangers that lurk on the web and the measures they
can

take to protect themselves.

According to Kim Sanchez, senior audience marketing manager at Microsoft's

Trustworthy Computing group, parents should know what their children are
doing

online, the social networks they frequent, and whether they use their mobile

phone to access the web. They can then advise on what kids should and
shouldn't

be posting online.

"Kids need to think about what they're putting out there for everybody to
view

before they do it," said Sanchez. "They should think before they post a blog
or

comment on their page or photos. They need to consider that it could be seen
by

anybody on the internet and that it may be permanent."

Personal details such as login credentials, addresses and birthdays should
never

be shared online. And just like in the real world, children should never

befriend strangers, said Sanchez. Parents should stress that it's never

acceptable to use abusive or threatening language in online communication,
and

explain how a child might go about reporting cyberbullying and obtaining
help

and support.

In general terms, offering guidance is more effective than trying to control

children's online behaviour, believes Sanchez. "Parents need to negotiate
clear

guidelines for their kids' internet use. There's really no technological

substitute for parental involvement, supervision and guidance," she said.

A training on Android is in the plans.
As soon as we have a device that can be recommended we will try to do such
a

training for it. We feel that Android is the future but affordable & truly
accessible devices are yet to arrive. We have been testing several devices
and are very optimistic about ice cream sandwitch version of Android.

Symbian is here for at least another few years and our observation is that
most users are not familiar with all features.

not

using these facilities.

To take the benefit of these technologies to more & more users Saksham
Trust, New Delhi is announcing a one day training module on accessible
mobile applications. In these trainings hands-on practical training
will be provided on using the applications listed below. Experts will
also configure the mobile phones of participants for maximum ease of

2012-04-19 Thread gufran
hello sir, i have no intention to say that actually i have experience
misguided advice in order to connect mobile as a modem.

usually they says that www will be act as your access point.
but for data card it might be diferent way to connect and work as a dial
up connection.

because each operator has different settings for access internet.
other vice i have no intention to prove him wrong.
i opologize for my mistake.

Kiran has solved the issue of connecting the inaccessible data cards,
and elaborated it very well.

I am also using huawei data card provided by MTS. You can not connect
through flash application.
You can creat the dialup icon on your desktop which you can easily
find inside the my network properties.

For more information I’m quoting the Kiran message below.

Block quote
You need not connect using the application provided by your service
provider. You can use basic windows service of dial up connection and
it is fully accessible.

It is by default set once u have installed it. Go to network
connections and u ll find it there. At the most u need to enter your
access number as user name and password both in dial up connection
settings.

I find it quite useful to memmorise keys / menu sequence of withdrawing cash

card.
And one more thing what I've observed is ATM machines have a key marked "X"
in capital letter. This key when pressed will eject the debit card out which
has been of some help whenever I failed to remember the menu sequence while
transacting. Yes happens with me sometimes when my memory eludes me.

People who are interested in regular batch will have to visit the
institute daily for 1 hrs. It covers all the contents for Internet

The TAB key is supposed to behave that way. Anyway if you wish to replace
the tab character with a space character then enter "^t" without quotes
in

the Find What box. ^t represents the tab character.

Re: [AI] Regarding Face Book.

2012-04-19 Thread Phen Varghese
Dear friend,

Facebook is accessible with the help of JAWS.
It will help in bothwww.facebook.comand m.facebook.com
The difference is inwww.facebook.com
You can read everything but the only problem is sining out from
facebookso the best option for that is m.facebook.com
JAWS won't read the log out button or the sign out button inwww.facebook.com
But in m.facebook.com
JAWS will show you the logout/sign out button.
So use m.facebook.com
it is fully accessible with JAWS.
This is the only info that I can give you.

Re: [AI] how to remove double space between the words in MS word

2012-04-19 Thread Zujar Shabbir Kanchwala
Play the following trick, it should help:

1. Replace all occurrences of full stop with two spaces with a full stop and
a ssingle space. Enter the following strings (without quotes) in the Find
and Replace dialog box:
Find What: ". "
Replace With: ". "
Activate the Replace All button.

2. Now your document would contain full stops followed by one space at all
places.
3. Replace all occurrences of full stop and one space with a full stop and
two spaces. Enter the following strings (without quotes) in the Find and
Replace dialog box:
Find What: ". "
Replace With: ". "
Activate the Replace All button.

Note that you should use CTRL+H to open the Find and Replace dialog box.
Pressing CTRL+F would open the dialog box without the Replace functionality.

Zujar

The TAB key is supposed to behave that way. Anyway if you wish to replace
the tab character with a space character then enter "^t" without quotes in
the Find What box. ^t represents the tab character.

Good , but I am struck at one point. I put at many places the tab, in
stead of space, now I want to replace the tab with a space, so in find
and replace dialogue I am unable to type tab in find collumn. As soon
I press tab the cursor moves to replace dialogue box!
very funny!
