[AI] Initial reactions on CMRL press release media

2012-05-07 Thread Vaishnavi Jayakumar
Apologies for cross posting - we're trying to reach as many people as we
can.

We need to prepare a response after a more detailed comparison of the documents
submitted earlier with reference material can be accessed / downloaded
herehttp://www.scribd.com/collections/3490912/Chennai-Metro-Rail
.
*
*
*Please send feedback by Friday 11th May 2012.*

*INITIAL FEEDBACK*

   - There is no mention on what the arrangements are in emergency
   situations.
   - Nothing about the training of staff on how to handle disabled
   passengers.
   - what about sign language interpreters at the counters and other places
   of public contact?
   - what if some one wants a little more time to get into the rake
car? They have alarm only inside the rake car.
   - There has to some silent space in each platform and inside the train
   for persons with Autism
   - Provision for asking for assistance at the station / plat form
   departure and arrival
   - Temporary bridge tp fill the gap between the platform and train with
the support of assistance in case where the gap cannot be avoided.
   - References Physically challenged instead of people with disability
   - physical access is just one dimension of accessibility.
   - As Guidelines issued by Ministry of Urban Development have not been
updated after 1998 we urge that they be supplemented with Railway Board
Reference Document MANUAL FOR STANDARDS AND SPECIFICATIONS FOR RAILWAY
   STATIONS June 2009 wherever appropriate.
   - Specifications to use ISO 21542:2011 as reference point
   - In the absence of an in-house accessibility consultant it is urged
that plans of rolling stock / stations be submitted to an access consultant
for comments - this can be shared as Metro Guidelines by other cities and
incorporated in Tamil Nadu's progressive, forward looking plans of
barrier-free access inclusion in the Urban Local Bodies Act amendment
   - It would be great if this public declaration of CMRL could be accessed
by Tamil Nadu's blind and low-vision population specifically - by posting
it on the CMRL website and conforming to WCAG 2 guidelines of web
   accessibility

Decision was taken in response to suggestions given by Disability Rights
Alliance – Tamil Nadu

Persons with disability will have comfortable access to metro stations and
trains, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) said on Saturday.

According to an official of the CMRL, all metro stations will have signage
within and outside the station to guide users. A dedicated parking space
will be provided to persons with disability, subject to space availability.
Non-slippery flooring and well-lit passages will be provided*.*

“We will make sure that the stations enable free movement. Tactile tiles
will be provided to help persons with disability access functional areas
and platforms,” the official told *The Hindu*.

The decision to make such provisions comes in response to suggestions made
by the Disability Rights Alliance–Tamil Nadu (DRA), which has been in
dialogue with the CMRL since January this year. Members had shared details
of some best practices, in addition to highlighting the shortcomings in the
existing metro network in New Delhi. CMRL had told the DRA that engineers
and those involved in finalising the station designs would get back with
details of what provisions will be made in the metro stations in Chennai.

The stations will have bumpy tiles to alert users with visual impairment,
before nearing the edge of the platform. The toilets will be made
accessible, and the ticket counters will be positioned at a convenient
height. Induction loops at ticket counters for hearing-impaired passengers,
a uniform terminal design, ramps with adequate landing space and

Hi all,

One of our client from a village in Haryana, who is a very bright student and
has completed his class 12th recently, is interested in knowing in detail about
GRE and TOEFL exams for the visually impaired people. He doesn't use computer

Could someone volunteer to talk to him primarily in Hindi, and explain about

[AI] Fwd: [WebAIM] May 9 Global Accessibility Awareness Day

Subject: [WebAIM] May 9 Global Accessibility Awareness Day
To: webaim-fo...@list.webaim.org

Over the last couple of weeks, some of you on Twitter and LinkedIn may
have seen reference to the first Global Accessibility Awareness Day on May
9. This grassroots effort has been driven by a blog post by a Los
Angeles-based dev, Joe Devon
http://mysqltalk.wordpress.com/2011/11/27/challenge-accessibility-know-how-needs-to-go-mainstream-with-developers-now/
which I happened upon by pure luck. I was excited by the idea and
potential because it fully supports the notion of reaching beyond the
converted (i.e., to the balance of the design, development, and related
IT communities). Think of it as a large accessibility “un”event in keeping
with the camp/unconference movement that many of you know me as the poster
guy for.

Fast-forward and at this point, there are two free public events
confirmed, one in Los Angeles featuring Yahoo!’s Todd Kloots and Victor
Tsaran http://www.meetup.com/LA-UPA/events/62248512
and a more modest one in Toronto hosted by myself
http://www.mysqltalk.com/gaadtoronto.htm
, with a few other events still in the works. The ultimate goal is to
raise awareness and begin digital accessibility conversations of all
kinds.

An official website will go up next week, which will include ideas on how
everyone can participate (e.g., unplug your mouse for an hour and use your
computer and blog about your experience). For now, there is info at
http://www.facebook.com/globalaccessibilityawarenessday.

While I know all too well that May 9 is just around the corner, if anyone
here has the time, and is willing and able to organize some sort of intro
to accessibility talk, demo of adaptive technology/mobile/other
accessibility, or other digital accessibility awareness building event in
your community/at work/school, get in touch with me via
globala11yawarenessday at gmail.com so it can be included and promoted. It
doesn’t have to be formal or large. Your target are designers, developers,
IT decision-makers, and others who are most likely not members of this
e-mail list.

Re: [AI] Converting word into PDF in bulk

2012-05-07 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Dear AccessIndians,
It gives me immense satisfaction and pleasure to greatfully acknowledge that
Kiran has done the huge task of converting around 8 thousand word files into
PDF for me by the script which he has described in the trailing mail.

As we know, converting PDF into word or text can be done easily by using
programmes like doctools etc.
However, when we wish to convert from word to PDF, we have some utilities like
DOPDF etc. but they require you to open each file and print it as PDF one by
one.We have had a quite a discussion on it in AI a few days ago.
Then, through AI only, Kiran came to my rescue, developing a script which he
readily allowed me to use, and whereby we could convert files from word into
PDF in bulk.

Indeed, I thank him from my heart for this yoeman service.
I believe he can share the download link for the script in case anybody wishes
to use it in future.

Thanks Kiran once again and Thanks AI too.

Dear Rajesh,

I have been able to get the script working for the
requirement no virtual pdf or any other printer will do this job. there
is only one utility available it is called the JOD Converter, there are
other ways of doing it.

One needs a Adobe acrobat writer, we need to
buy adobe acrobat or there is a single utility with very pdf(costing 80
USD) but using this too it is a command line program but we need to do
the execution of the command line for each file (convert.exe 1.doc
1.pdf) this is as we are doing the open and print as pdf.

the script
that i have written lists and stores all the doc files in a text file
(batch processing) eg Convert.exe + filename.doc(from a txt file
populated) to filename.pdf)

however the testing is done but to release
the same I need some time and hope to give it as soon as possible. jod
converter is the best option available and is open source. i hope that
this exercise shall be helpful to some others needing this kind of
utility, this will also help conversion of one format to other including
unicode support.

Assure you of the release and requesting you to give
me some time.

Regards,

Kiran

Hi Vaishnavi,

This looks good to me. Couple of points though:

Reserved parking says it is subject to space availability. I think, this should
not be a loop whole to break the guideline and they must provide reserved
parking.

Secondly why only two accessible doors? Can't they build all doors in
accessible way? Inclusiveness means everyone should have equal access.

If they only can provide two accessible doors, there should be clear direction
guiding passengers to those accessible doors.

Pls thank Meera for all the follow up.

Universal design should ensure equal access to all who use the service. The
present status is simply a special provision which does not qualify in my

this kind of a special approach is not acceptable.

   - In the absence of an in-house accessibility consultant it is urged
that plans of rolling stock / stations be submitted to an access
consultant
for comments - this can be shared as Metro Guidelines by other cities and
incorporated in Tamil Nadu's progressive, forward looking plans of
barrier-free access inclusion in the Urban Local Bodies Act amendment
   - It would be great if this public declaration of CMRL could be accessed
by Tamil Nadu's blind and low-vision population specifically - by posting
it on the CMRL website and conforming to WCAG 2 guidelines of web
   accessibility

 Really Flying Blind
 By

 Alan Paganelli

Yes, I really did learn to fly. I can also prove every dime I spent on
flying lessons. I kept every receipt for each hour I paid for and
 every entry in
my log book is signed by John Dunn and his CFI certification license
number making it perfectly legal. I had close to 40 hours or about
 enough for a private
pilot’s license. We even discussed going to court but decided that it
would be a waste of good money. I'd be crazy to fly with any body
 other than a pilot.
So technically, I'm flying under his license so in the end we would be
going to court to argue over a piece of paper. Somebody else wanted me
 to give the
information to the Guinness world book of records as the first totally
blind man to learn to fly but I don't care about that. I did it
 because it was what
I wanted to do and not for anything else and was willing to put my
money where my mouth is. Anyway, here's my story.

Back in the mid 70's I was playing at a local restaurant. They swapped
out musicians from time to time and we all came to know each other
 pretty well. At
one time or another, we all played at all of the local establishments.
One night I had a night off and went to listen to a new musician at
 one of the places
I regularly worked at. They had a woman playing and she was pretty
good. When she took a break we sat and visited talking about the job.
 She asked me what
kind of music the people liked here and I told her. During our
conversation she mentioned that she was tired that night because she
 had just flown into
the local airport shortly before she came to work. I knew that the
airport only had small aircraft housed there and asked her about it.
 She said that she
was a pilot. I began asking her questions about flying. She said that
her husband knew more about the subject than she did and then invited
 me to their
home to meet him and talk about it. I took her up on her offer and her
husband was a really great fellow. Come to think of it, some 28 years
 later give
or take he still is but I digress here.

As we discussed flying he put it to me, if I can talk one of the
certified flying instructors into it would you be willing to put your
 money down on the
table to find out what it was all about? We discussed how much it cost
back then. It was 20 bucks an hour for a small two place airplane and
 another 10
an hour for the services of the C-F-I. I said that I thought any
flying instructor he might talk to would surely think he was a mad man
 and that they might
pull his ticket too! Much to my surprise the next afternoon he called
me up and told me to be down at the airport in the morning at 10 A.M.
 My flying lesson
was then but if I wanted to get a few pointers ahead of time be there
two hours earlier and meet him in the flight center and he would show
 me around in
 his plane.

I told my dad all about it and he too thought we all were out of our
trees but he would drive me over. Dad flew in in the Second World War
 and knew about
 flying.

We met my friend the next day and he explained all the flight controls
and their functions to me. Not only do you have to worry about left
 and right, you
have to worry about up and down too. An aircraft doesn't only operate
in two axes, it moves in 3 because an aircraft can also roll. So there
 is pitch and
roll in addition to left and right. Many concepts were explained to me
by using my hand representing an airplane or a toy aircraft. He
 explained the instruments
and what they were used fore and it was as clear as mud at midnight on
a dark night! He said don't worry about it now. It'll all come to you
 as you learn.
I began to think he may be in error. We had the left hand side cabin
door open for fresh air and a man came up to me and said you must be
 Alan Paganelli.
My name is John and I'm going to be your flying instructor. I remember
thinking to myself; funny, he doesn't sound like a mad man.

John took my brand new empty log book and said I'll make your entries
for you and sign off on them with my certified flying instructor's
 number. That makes
it all legal and all. That means I will be making a record of it
myself for my records. I thought yeah for the hearing to see which of

The real problem of blindness is not the loss of eyesight.
The real problem is the misunderstanding and lack of information that exist.
If a blind person has proper training and opportunity, blindness can be reduced

Hello,

One of my friends bought a C5 handset from Saksham. This one has extra phone
memory and some good programmes like internet radio. I bought the same set last
year from Saksham. I understand that I can't get the extra phone memory. Can I
download the internet radio from somewhere?

That means I will be

[AI] Activating audio in safe mode

2012-05-07 Thread Kotian, H P
Hello All

There is an easy to use registry entry which will enable / disable audio in
safe mode.

Download the file:

Open the appropriate file inside the zipped file.

This will also make speech coming from the screen reader which otherwise is
disabled in safe mode.

May I clarify, this is not the tip to get into safe mode, rather a help when
you inadvertently land in it.

 Hello All

There is an easy to use registry entry which will enable / disable audio
 in safe mode.

 Download the file:

 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/21735685/activate%20audio%20in%20safe%20mode.zip

Open the appropriate file inside the zipped file.

This will also make speech coming from the screen reader which otherwise
 is disabled in safe mode.

May I clarify, this is not the tip to get into safe mode, rather a help
when you inadvertently land in it.

hi friends, dreem come true...great news by times of india...NEW DELHI:
Soon, differently abled people can book rail tickets online at
concessional fares that they are entitled to. At present, differently
abled people have to go to railway reservation counters to book
tickets if they want to avail the fare concession given by railways.

The railway board is ready with the plan to facilitate online ticket
booking for its special passengers, a senior official said.

The plan is to issue identity cards with specific numbers to each
differently abled person which will be built into the computerized
passenger reservation system (PRS) across the country. This will
ensure that differently abled persons can avail fare concession even
while booking tickets online, the official said.

Under the proposal, the board plans to set up specific offices in
zones and divisions where differently abled people can get their fare
concession card made after producing a medical certificate.

Physically challenged people get fare concessions, have special
reservation counters at railway stations and even special coaches on
trains but cannot avail fare concessions while booking an e-ticket.
They can book full fare tickets through the internet.

The move came after railway board received several complaints from
differently abled passengers and social activists. The issue was also
raised with Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC),
the PSU handling online ticketing operations.

The railways' argument was that in purchase of concessional tickets,
the physical document needed to be verified at the time of booking
before extending the concession.

However, the railway board realized that e-ticket booking facility was
much more essential for physically challenged persons than other
passengers. Under the plan, the physical verification of the document
will be done at the time of issuing identity card, an official said.
