Subject: [AI] Request for responses against the injustice.

 Respected members,

This is regarding the Complaint about Kerala PSC’s Last Grade Servant
suitability test and rank list for the visually challenged.

I applied for the post of last grade servant in Thrissur district in
Kerala PSC (Category no. 508/2009). As I am a partially blind person
(75% disability), I requested for a scribe, and wrote the exam with
the help of the scribe allowed for me. I secured 73 marks in the
written exam and thereby attained a place in the special probability
list for physically handicapped, published by the Thrissur District
PSC office. As a result, I received a letter from Psc to attend the
certificate verification and suitability test on 09.05.2012 in the
District PSC office, Thrissur. PSC conducted the suitability test by
way of giving news paper to read, and I failed to do it.

On 29.06.2012, KPSC published the rank list for the same by dropping
me. Thus, I have been denied the right to be in the rank list. If I
will be in the rank list I will be in the 4th place among the blind
persons in the rank list. Now the marks of last candidate in the
partially blind category in the rank list is minus 1. Even though I
had acquired 73 marks, I was denied the place in the rank list and
thereby also the job opportunity, because of the “unsuitable for the
post” statement result of the suitability test. The recruitment is for
the various departments of the Kerala Government with a very large
 number of vacancies.
Also at the same time, 5 persons with 100% disability and 2 persons
with the same percentage of disability in Trivandrum and Kottayam
districts respectively have been included in the rank list. A point to
be noted is that, as the process of “newspaper reading” was not
applied for the suitability test in the other districts other than
Thrissur, as a result, larger number of persons having 90% disability
was included in the rank list. So, when persons with 100% disability
and persons having negative marks were included in the rank list, I,
instead of scoring 73 marks and having 75% disability was neglected
 from the list.

Due to this injustice shown towards me, I decided to file a case in
the court and have approached a lawyer for helping me to obtain the
rights. The lawyer has informed that most probably by Tuesday (July
17th), the case will be filed in the Kerala Administration Tribunal.

So, dear members, if you have any informations regarding these type of
cases and judgments or if you have any documents or government orders
regarding this matter please do mail or inform me ASAP. I had also
faced the similar problem in the suitability test of LD clerk post a
couple of months ago. So, if there are any other ways also for
availing justice, please do help me!

Once again I am requesting to all the members to please respond to
this mail with suitable suggestions and informations!

 With thanks and regards,

The only thing one can do to be careful not to spill oil out of the cooking

and lightly drop it into the oil. Initially, it is scary because you are
trying to save the oil from splashing onto your hand, but if you put the
vegetable into another container, steel one, so it doesn't singe when
touched to the rim of the hot utensil on the fire, just tilt the container
of the vegetable into the pan on the fire. It will splash some, because of
some water content in it, but slow and steady, you'll definitely get there.

2012-07-14 Thread SYED IMRAN
Hi

Has anyone tried turning an iPod touch into an iPhone? I hurd that it is
possible to do that using a hardware device called Apple Peel 520.

Overview:

The Yosion Apple Peel 520 is a new wireless device that adds mobile voice
and text messaging capabilities to the iPod Touch. The gadget acts as a
protective skin that slips over the iPod Touch and includes a battery, dock

Well, There could be more than one ways, but let me explain the way I
use for Kannada, which should be same with the other languages.
install the 'Baraha' software from www.baraha.com. Then open Start
menu all programs baraha x baraha direct. Note: 'x' here stands
for the version here. Now you should be able to see Baraha direct Icon
in your System tray (usually Bottom
right corner of your video display unit / monitor) Jaws users can use
'Ins+f11' for bringing up the system tray Icon list. Click the right
mouse button on Baraha direct Icon, A context menu will be popped,
then navigate to 'Malayalam' 'Malayalam' is a sub menu, in Malayalam
sub menu, choose the Item 'Unicode' and hit enter. Note: at any time,
if you want to switch back to English, press 'f11' and press the same
key to switch to Malayalam. Now press 'f11' to switch back to English,
open word, set the font to either 'Kartika' or to 'arial Unicode Ms'
and again press 'f11' and start Typing in. The typed text will be
displayed in Malayalam. The keyboard layout is phonetic, thats to say,
lik typing in English. Eg: if you Type malayALaM it will be displaied
 as Malayalam in Malayalam Alphabets.
Hope this clears your doubt. The same method
can be adapted for any Indic languages, in menus, you need to select
appropriate language. Need to select the appropriate font in Ms word.

 from its home page.
then while installing, there will be a language dialogue and 3 to 4
 edit

just copy from that box everything and paste in next box. then edit
 en

replace with malayalam related letters i thing ma.
then at last, mail voice is given as M1 upto M3. you can change to
 female

then press next and install button.
then in jaws, go to language menu, choose voice profiles, then go to

Georgie, a smartphone app for the visually impaired, now available
  Applications,
  News,
By Chris Parsons | Jul 13 2012 | 2:44 pm | 3 Comments

Addressing the smartphone market for the visually impaired is an ongoing task.

Over the years, there have been plenty of advancements in this area with the
introduction of numerous applications, voice technology and on screen
accessibility features but now a new entrant into the market is seeking to help
folks as well. Screenreader, a not-for-profit company, has now introduced the
Android based Georgie app in the U.K where there 1 in every 30 people suffer
from some sort of visual impairment.
Using existing Samsung phones like the Samsung XCover and Galaxy Ace 2, picked
specifically to be easy to use for blind users, Georgie offers a whole new
experience by allowing for such things as managing contacts, using speech input
to send text messages and tag previous routes or hazards (like potholes or low
hanging branches) using navigation apps.
Georgie is available for purchase on the Google Play Store in a number of
different packages. The base package with all features is available for £299
with additional feature sets available for £149. You can look at the full press
release below or check out the source link for video on how Georgie works on
devices.
Source: ScreenReader
World's first smartphone for blind people available today

Georgie, a smartphone designed for blind people, by blind people, is launching
today to transform the lives of the almost 2 million people in the UK living
with sight loss. Developed by not-for-profit social enterprise Screenreader and
available through exclusive partners Sight and Sound Technology, the new
smartphone includes apps built specifically to help blind users navigate
day-to-day obstacles like catching a bus, reading printed text and
knowing their
exact whereabouts in unfamiliar areas. Tasks more commonly associated with
smartphones like using Twitter, reading text messages and taking a picture have
also been updated to be much easier to use and accessible to visually impaired
people for the first time. Georgie is available from £299, or the unique
features are available to download as an app for anyone with an
existing Android
smartphone from £149.

Founded by blind husband and wife team Roger and Margaret Wilson-Hinds,
Screenreader had a clear idea about how a smartphone should be for visually
impaired users, so enlisted Alan Kemp as Chief Technical Officer to bring the
idea to fruition. Georgie, named after Margaret's first Golden Labrador guide
dog, is the work of 18 months of development and testing, working closely with
the blind community for their feedback.

Georgie makes use of Google's Android operating system and existing Samsung
phones like the Samsung XCover and Galaxy Ace 2, picked specifically to be easy
to use for blind users. The large buttons on an uncluttered screen, voice
feedback whenever the screen's touched and an innovative way to select the
desired option also make the basic functions of the phone easier to use for
visually impaired people, as well as those unfamiliar with modern technology.

I was able to send my very first text just earlier this year thanks
to Georgie
said Screenreader co-founder Roger Wilson-Hinds. It's exactly that type of
digital experience we want to make easily available to people with little or no
sight. More than that though, it's also going to help solve every day problems
for blind people so they can be more confident about navigating the real world
and become independent.

Glenn Tookey, CEO of Sight and Sound Technology added Companies like Apple and
Google have done a good job of adding accessibility tools to smartphones, but
Georgie is the first smartphone solution developed with the visually
impaired in
mind. For that reason Georgie offers relevant features which, coupled with our
expertise in offering customer support to the blind community, makes for a
really exciting, well supported product that we're proud to exclusively
distribute.

Out of the box Georgie comes with features to let users dial a number with the
voice assisted touchscreen, manage contacts, use speech input to send text
messages and tag previous routes or hazards (like potholes or low hanging
branches) using the navigation apps. A variety of additional apps are also
available for purchase and bundled into three different packages, Travel,
Lifestyle or Communicate, to add more functions to support different aspects of
daily life that blind people may currently find challenging. These bundles are
available for £24.99 each and include the following extra features:
· Travel
o Near me - find places of interest - everything from bus stops and cafes to
the local zoo
o Buses - know when the next bus is arriving and when to get off

Sorry, but it will not work. This is the nice program to listen to
radio, but not BBC Hindi since the website itself does not get updated.
And of course you can listen to BBC Hindi live at 7:30 PM.
And that's possible on the website also. But mp3 files are not updated
and henceforth if you mis the live program, then that's about it. The
unorganized aspect of Indian administrative structure is finally
getting in to BBC also!! Congrads!!!

[AI] Chennai to host Chess Olympiad for blind

2012-07-14 Thread Pradeep Banakar
Thaindian News

www.thaindian.com/newsportal/uncategorized/chennai-t

Chennai, July 14 (IANS) The 14th IBCA Chess Olympiad for the Blind will be held
here Aug 9-19. It will be the first time Asia will host the event.

After the successful conduct of the 11th Individual World Chess Championship
for the Blind 2006 in Goa, the International Braille Chess Association (IBCA)
Congress awarded this event to India unanimously.

The last edition at Heraklion in Greece saw a total of 164 players from 34
countries take part.

The traditional powerhouse of chess, Russia, took the gold with Ukraine and
Spain clinching the silver and bronze medals.

World champion Viswanathan Anand has been a morale booster to the Indian blind
team. Anand's positive initiative helped the Indian team to take part in the
IBCA Chess Olympiad in Greece.

Charudatta Jadhav, general secretary of AICFB, said Friday: Anand's support
gives me huge motivation and inner strength to initiate ambitious programmes to
take chess for the blind at next level in spite of several adversities.

Impressed by the blind team's work, Anand said: I have interacted with many
visually challenged players and I can say honestly that these players have a
special talent.

I am really happy to see them so motivated. What has struck me is their love
for chess. I have found that they are preparing intensely for the championship
and are not shying away from hard work.

I think they are quite motivated and feel deep down that they will be
successful.

Anand thanked Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalaithaa for extending support
to the team.

The blind chess player from Chennai, Srikrishna, could take part in the world
blind event in Greece, thanks to the timely support of the chief minister of
Tamil Nadu.

Thirtyone countries have confirmed their participation, including 25
International Masters, five International Woman Masters and 120 FIDE rated
players.

The championship will be a team event, comprising nine rounds and a match
between two teams will be played on four boards. Each team will field a maximum
of five players, the fifth player being the reserve.

In addition to the gold, silver and bronze medals to the top three ranked
teams, similar medals are at stake for the best three individuals on each of
the five boards.

International Arbiter R. Anantharam, the only A grade International Arbiter in
India, is the chief arbiter of the tournament.

[AI] That’s No Phone. That’s My Tracker

2012-07-14 Thread avinash shahi
By PETER MAASS and MEGHA RAJAGOPALAN

THE device in your purse or jeans that you think is a cellphone —
guess again. It is a tracking device that happens to make calls. Let’s
stop calling them phones. They are trackers.

 Javier Jaén Benavides
Most doubts about the principal function of these devices were erased
when it was recently disclosed that cellphone carriers responded 1.3
million times last year to law enforcement requests for call data.
That’s not even a complete count, because T-Mobile, one of the largest
carriers, refused to reveal its numbers. It appears that millions of
cellphone users have been swept up in government surveillance of their
calls and where they made them from. Many police agencies don’t obtain
search warrants when requesting location data from carriers.

Thanks to the explosion of GPS technology and smartphone apps, these
devices are also taking note of what we buy, where and when we buy it,
how much money we have in the bank, whom we text and e-mail, what Web
sites we visit, how and where we travel, what time we go to sleep and
wake up — and more. Much of that data is shared with companies that
use it to offer us services they think we want.

We have all heard about the wonders of frictionless sharing, whereby
social networks automatically let our friends know what we are reading
or listening to, but what we hear less about is frictionless
surveillance. Though we invite some tracking — think of our mapping
requests as we try to find a restaurant in a strange part of town —
much of it is done without our awareness.

“Every year, private companies spend millions of dollars developing
new services that track, store and share the words, movements and even
the thoughts of their customers,” writes Paul Ohm, a law professor at
the University of Colorado. “These invasive services have proved
irresistible to consumers, and millions now own sophisticated tracking
devices (smartphones) studded with sensors and always connected to the
Internet.”

Mr. Ohm labels them tracking devices. So does Jacob Appelbaum, a
developer and spokesman for the Tor project, which allows users to
browse the Web anonymously. Scholars have called them minicomputers
and robots. Everyone is struggling to find the right tag, because
“cellphone” and “smartphone” are inadequate. This is not a semantic
game. Names matter, quite a bit. In politics and advertising, framing
is regarded as essential because what you call something influences
what you think about it. That’s why there are battles over the tags
“Obamacare” and “death panels.”

In just the past few years, cellphone companies have honed their
geographic technology, which has become almost pinpoint. The
surveillance and privacy implications are quite simple. If someone
knows exactly where you are, they probably know what you are doing.
Cellular systems constantly check and record the location of all
phones on their networks — and this data is particularly treasured by
police departments and online advertisers. Cell companies typically
retain your geographic information for a year or longer, according to
data gathered by the Justice Department.

What’s the harm? The United States Court of Appeals for the District
of Columbia Circuit, ruling about the use of tracking devices by the
police, noted that GPS data can reveal whether a person “is a weekly
church goer, a heavy drinker, a regular at the gym, an unfaithful
husband, an outpatient receiving medical treatment, an associate of
particular individuals or political groups — and not just one such
fact about a person, but all such facts.” Even the most gregarious of
sharers might not reveal all that on Facebook.

There is an even more fascinating and diabolical element to what can
be done with location information. New research suggests that by
cross-referencing your geographical data with that of your friends,
it’s possible to predict your future whereabouts with a much higher
degree of accuracy.

This is what’s known as predictive modeling, and it requires nothing
more than your cellphone data.

If we are naïve to think of them as phones, what should we call them?
Eben Moglen, a law professor at Columbia University, argues that they
are robots for which we — the proud owners — are merely the hands and
feet. “They see everything, they’re aware of our position, our
relationship to other human beings and other robots, they mediate an
information stream around us,” he has said. Over time, we’ve used
these devices less for their original purpose. A recent survey by O2,
a British cell carrier, showed that making calls is the
fifth-most-popular activity for smartphones; more popular uses are Web
browsing, checking social networks, playing games and listening to
music. Smartphones are taking over the functions that laptops,
cameras, credit cards and watches once performed for us.

If you want to avoid some surveillance, the best option is to use cash
for prepaid cellphones that do not require identification. The
