Re: [AI] MS Excel sessions on Saturdays for all working persons with visual impairment
Friends Even I had attended this training last month and benefited from it. Training brushed up my skills and learned many new concepts which are going to help me in future. As we all are aware excel is huge concept and it couldn’t be taught in a week or two. But Tony made us to learn important concepts in excel which are really useful for each one of attendees. Apart from training module, though he is a sighted trainer, I didn’t find any difficulties in learning from him neither in group nor individually. Rest it depends on individual how they take it. Personally I feel, when trainer forms a group to teach something he will surely take care of each individual. So he did with out any spoon feeding. Each attendee was from different background, so each one had different performing level. Tony E-mailed 3 to 4 exercise in advance. He E-mailed us 2 by second and another 2 by third day to each candidate with instruction once we are done with our running exercise, inform him and go for next one, to utilise our precious time we were spending with him just for a week. Friends as of my knowledge, advance excel training was organised first time for visually impaired, if not please do correct me. Though we have experts on list, still there are many who are really in need of this type of trainings. So we should respect the initiative taken by Tony and Mitra Jyothi. I apologise in case, unknowingly any one is hurt by my E-mail. On 1/3/13, Umesha Economics umesha@gmail.com wrote: nice opportunity? (smiles). dear friends, I too attended the M S excel course in Mitrajyothi in December last year. my opinion is exactly opposite to that of Shreedhar's. before telling how it was, let me acknowledge that Mitrajyothi has done a marvellous job in other fields like talking books library, living skills training etc. especially, the talking books library which the institute is providing from last one and a half decades has gone a long way in enhancing the availability of reading materials for the visually impaired students of Karnataka. thousand plus students including myself have been greatly benefited from it. but this course in M S Excel is different and not worth attending. it is mainly because of it's instructor. as I said earlier, I also attended that one week course in December but learnt very little or nothing in the course from the instructor. Mr. Tony Thomas, sorry to say the truth, is not a right person to be a teacher or instructor. from the day one, I felt unsatisfied since I could not learn what I expected. the course was named 'Advanced course in M S Excel'. but we were diverse group as per the knowledge in excel is concerned. there were some who did not know the basics of excel. we had to sit idle until they are taught the basics. I explained the problem to him and he assured that he would split the batch into groups according to needs and give the instructions as per their phase of learning from the next day. but it was not realized on the next day. ☺he gave many such assurances which never realized. on my second day, we requested for some changes in the pattern of instruction in terms of schedule regarding verbal explanation and practice sessions (theory and practicals). he agreed. it was also a never implemented assurance. many of us needed much more time for practice. but even after continuous requests, it was not provided. we were tired of long instruction sessions from morning about 10 to evening 6:30 or 7, and some days until 8:00. once he said that extension in the evening is optional to students. but he continued having regular instructions and discussions in the evening making it inevitable for us to sit. as a result, we were unable to complete the exercises that were given to us. another problem was that he was teaching some personality related things also. it is the fate of many courses our NGOs offer. they do not want to teach one thing properly. they want to teach everything together. after reading this mail one may call me a rude person. but it is true that I have enough level of personality and it has been proved by my surroundings: my friends, colleagues, students, and others. so, this personality related instruction which consumed hours together in each day was a significant unwanted part of the programme for me and some others. one day he spent about 2 hours telling only about himself. was it all needed? certainly not, at least for me. he was asking us to play some fun games and we used to spend about one to two hours in a day. I am not against games. I know they are relaxing and refreshing. but we have to do all those when we really need relaxation and refreshment. it should not overtake the main activity. some days he was playing with us in the morning in beginning hours only. is it right? one more problem was the unnecessary intervention caused by a fellow student/teacher by name Anjaneyulu. he was both a student and teacher. it is

I would be delighted to volunteer as a trainer in Mumbai. I am proficient with MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook etc. with Jaws. Additionally, I also use voiceover on apple iPhone, iPod, and iPad. I have limited experience with Mac but can help there too. I can also help in setting up the logistics and in coordination. I think that such an initiative is extremely useful and required. I think me becoming a mouse will be faster and than these trials reaching stage of human treatments So all blind folks let’s become mice and play 3 blind mice and cheese. It would be fun, wouldn’t it be? No, on a serious note, thanks for sharing. The team in Oxford said their studies closely resemble the treatments that would be needed in people with degenerative eye disease. Similar results have already been achieved with night-blind mice. Experts said the field was advancing rapidly, but there were still questions about the quality of vision restored. Patients with retinitis pigmentosa gradually lose light-sensing cells from the retina and can become blind. It's the first proof that you can take a completely blind mouse, put the cells in and reconstruct the entire light-sensitive layer Prof Robert MacLaren University of Oxford The research team, at the University of Oxford, used mice with a complete lack of light-sensing photoreceptor cells in their retinas. The mice were unable to tell the difference between light and dark. Reconstruction They injected precursor cells which will develop into the building blocks of a retina once inside the eye. Two weeks after the injections a retina had formed, according to the findings presented in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal. Prof Robert MacLaren said: We have recreated the whole structure, basically it's the first proof that you can take a completely blind mouse, put the cells in and reconstruct the entire light-sensitive layer. Previous studies have achieved similar results with mice that had a partially degenerated retina. Prof MacLaren said this was like restoring a whole computer screen rather than repairing individual pixels. The mice were tested to see if they fled being in a bright area, if their pupils constricted in response to light and had their brain scanned to see if visual information was being processed by the mind. Vision Prof Pete Coffee, from the Institute of Ophthalmology at University College London, said the findings were important as they looked at the most clinically relevant and severe case of blindness. This is probably what you would need to do to restore sight in a patient that has lost their vision Prof Pete Coffee University College London This is probably what you would need to do to restore sight in a patient that has lost their vision, he said. However, he said this and similar studies needed to show how good the recovered vision was as brain scans and tests of light sensitivity were not enough. He said: Can they tell the difference between a nasty animal and something to eat? Prof Robin Ali published research in the journal Nature showing that transplanting cells could restore vision in night-blind mice and then showed the same technique worked in a range of mice with degenerated retinas. He said: These papers demonstrate that it is possible to transplant photoreceptor cells into a range of mice even with a severe level of degeneration. I think it's great that another group is showing the utility of photoreceptor transplantation. Researchers are already trialling human embryonic stem cells, at Moorfields Eye Hospital, in patients with Stargardt's disease. Early results suggest the technique is safe but reliable results will take several years. Retinal chips or bionic eyes are also being trailed in patients with retinitis pigmentosa. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-20898935 Regards Mr. Sameer Latey Mumbai, India ___ Visit our website at http://www.voicevision.in Join us on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/voicevisionfans Or follow us on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/voicevision_in List mailing list l...@voicevision.in For list guidelines other subscription changes visit http://voicevision.in/mailman/listinfo/list_voicevision.in -- Thanks and Regards.
