[AI] Kindle Books are Finally Made Accessible to People with Print Disabilities

2013-05-07 Thread TS Negi
Kindle Books are Finally Made Accessible to People with Print Disabilities
Alena Roberts
Access to the written word for those of us with print disabilities has only
continued to get better as technology has improved. Not that long ago, our
community only had access to 5 percent of published material. Organizations
like Bookshare and the Gutenberg Library project increased this number, but
there were still so many books that remained out of reach. Once the IOS
platform became accessible, the number of available books increased further
with access to iBooks and recently the Nook collection from Barnes and Noble,
but it was Amazon's Kindle book collection that we were still waiting for. Many
in our community thought that Amazon didn't care, or didn't want to make the
effort, but last week they proved us wrong.

After reading about the update to the Kindle app, I immediately went and
downloaded it from the app store. At some point in the past I had added
Treasure Island to my Kindle book collection, so I opened it up and started
reading. When you open a book, the menu will be off and voiceover will say, to
read continuously swipe down with two fingers or tap and hold to select text.
If you choose continuous reading, it will automatically change pages for you.
You can also move to a specific chapter or page by activating the menu. To turn
on the menu, double tap with one finger. The menu also allows you to go back to
your list of books.

As many may remember, iBooks is one of the few apps that allow you to download
books from within the app. With this in mind, you must use the Amazon website
to get your books. Their website is easy to navigate on your IOS device, or you
can also add books to your wish list using the Amazon app.

After testing out Treasure Island I decided to find other books to add. I
searched for free books on the Amazon website and found thousands of options
including books that were recently published. After downloading them, I went
back into the app, selected settings and hit sync. This is something you'll
need to do every time you get a new book.

The final bit of happy news is that these books are also accessible with
Braille displays. This is going to open up a whole new world to Braille
readers. If you like your experience with iBooks you will like the Kindle's new
changes. Now we can only hope that the Kindle made by Amazon will also be
accessible at some point in the future.

[AI] Perfect Your English... Identifying and non-identifying relative clauses

2013-05-07 Thread chaaru surendrababu
Identifying and non-identifying clauses
Posted By Manjusha in English Grammar

Some relative clauses identify or classify nouns: they tell us which person
or thing, or which kind of person or thing, is meant. These are called
identifying, defining or restrictive relative clauses.
Consider the example given below.
People who take physical exercise live longer.
Here the relative clause is who take physical exercise. This relative
clause is identifying, since it is required for identification: without it,
we would have only People live longer, which does not identify the people
under discussion.
Other examples are given below.
The restaurant which we visited last night was pretty good.
Paris is a city I have always wanted to visit.
She married a man that she met on a bus.
Identifying relative clauses usually follow immediately after the nouns
that they modify, without a break: they are not separated by commas in
writing. This is because the noun would be incomplete without the relative
clause, and the sentence would make no sense or have a different meaning.
A non-defining relative clause is not required for identification. It
serves only to provide additional information. Non-identifying clauses are
normally separated by commas.
Janet, who does my hair, has moved to another hairdresser’s.
Here the relative clause is who does my hair. This relative clause is
non-identifying, since it is not required to identify Janet: it merely
provides additional information.
Another example is given below.
She married a smart architect from Beijing, whom she met on a bus.
That
That is common as a relative pronoun in identifying clauses. It can refer
to things and in an informal style to people.
This is the boy that won the first prize. (OR … who won the first prize.)
Here is the man that I told you of. (OR … of whom I told you.)
In non-identifying clauses, that is unusual.
This is John, who won the first prize. (BUT NOT This is John, that won the
first prize.)
In identifying relative clauses, we often leave out object pronouns. In
non-identifying clauses this is not possible.
I still remember the men (whom) I knew in my youth. (identifying)
Be loyal to the friends (that) you have. (identifying)
I feel sorry for the man (whom) she married.
She went to work with my cousin, whom she later married. (NOT She went to
work with my cousin, she later married.)

Thanks.

Hi pen friends,

we shall learn today of English Articles.

Question: When do I use 'a', 'an' and 'the'

Answer: Here are the rules for when to use A, An or The:

•a = indefinite article (not a specific object, one of a number of the
same objects) with consonants
 She has a dog.
 I work in a factory.
•an = indefinite article (not a specific object, one of a number of
the same objects) with vowels (a,e,i,o,u)
 Can I have an apple?
 She is an English teacher.
•the = definite article (a specific object that both the person
speaking and the listener know)
The car over there is fast.
The teacher is very good, isn't he?
•The first time you speak of something use a or an, the next time
you repeat that object use the.
I live in a house. The house is quite old and has four bedrooms.
I ate in a Chinese restaurant. The restaurant was very good.
•DO NOT use an article with countries, states, counties or provinces,
lakes and mountains except when the country is a collection of states
such as The United States.
He lives in Washington near Mount Rainier.
They live in northern British Columbia.
•Use an article with bodies of water, oceans and seas
My country borders on the Pacific Ocean
•DO NOT use an article when you are speaking about things in general
 I like Russian tea.
 She likes reading books.
•DO NOT use an article when you are speaking about meals, places, and transport
 He has breakfast at home.
 I go to university.
He comes to work by taxi.

hope the lesson was utile and penetrable with suffice illustrations.
in need of more clarifications, please send in to my in-basket.

Subject: [AI] AI magazine (lakshmi siragam)

Dear all,

It's wonderful to know that there is some interest around starting a monthly
AI magazine. The good news is that a brail lifestyle magazine called White
Paper has recently been started with its first issue being published in
this month. I believe that rather than starting a new AI magazine, we should
start subscribing and contributing to this new magazine. By c consolidating
our effort instead of fragmenting it by introducing a new magazine we will
be able to generate greater value for the community. Besides, printing and
publishing a monthly magazine brings its own a logistical and financial
challenges.

Regards.

[AI] What Is Task Manager, Application, Services, Processes And How To Kill Unresponsive ..

2013-05-07 Thread Salim qureshi
hello friends,

enjoy some new facts regarding task manager.

Whenever our beloved PC freezes, hangs or become unresponsive, the
first thing which all of us do is press CTRL+ALT+DELETE and selects a
Task Manager option from the screen. I never met a guy who doesn't
know about the Task Manager option in Windows. Still, if you have
never heard about Task Manager, it's a utility in Windows which you
can use to quickly recover your PC from unresponsive conditions.

But that's not the only thing which you can do with the Task Manager
utility, it has many more advanced features in it which we will
discuss step by step.

Note: Task Manager has tons of options and it's difficult to explain
each and everything in one article. In this article we will talk about
some basics and then in the future articles we will see some advance
options of it.

What are Applications, Processes And Services

Before going into details, it's necessary to understand the basic
terminologies first to avoid the confusion.

1. Applications -- It's a program / software which you work on. (e.g.
Word, Excel, Chrome, Internet Explorer etc.)

2. Services -- While you are working on Windows, browsing Internet,
Printing Documents etc., there are many things which are running in
the background making it possible for you to perform those tasks
easily on your Computer. Those background things are called Windows
Services. (For more detail info regarding services, Read : What Are
Windows Services)

3. Processes -- Each application you open in Windows create one or
many processes. These processes run in the background and helps the
application to run properly in Windows. As soon as you exit the
application / software, all of its related processes also get closed.
But It's not necessary, for e.g. an antivirus software or a backup
program starts automatically when you turn on a PC and its processes
automatically run in the background without even opening the software
each time. These processes (which starts automatically) act more like
a service.

Processes and Services both run in the background, but have different
meaning and purpose. To keep things simple, just keep this thing in
mind that Services helps Processes to achieve the work which an
Application is trying to do.

Why To Use Task Manager?

When you log in to Windows, there are many programs which starts at
the startup and many services which runs in the background without
your knowledge. Each application / software you open in Windows also
creates one or many processes (tasks) in the background. Every PC has
some limitation, doesn't matter how much RAM you have or how fast your
Processor really is, you simply cannot run tons of software /
applications at a time on it.

At the beginning you will not face any trouble using your PC, but
after using Windows for some time (for many hours), you may feel some
lag or slowness (that depends how many softwares you are concurrently
working on). This may happen because all the services / processes
which are running in the background become insupportable by your PC's
hardware. When any particular windows service or process from a
software needs more resources from your PC and your Windows don't
provide it because of any reason, that may cause Unresponsiveness /
Hanging / Freezing Issue.

Note: PC can become unresponsive because of many reasons, but most of
the time it's because of Windows Services / Application Processes.
These problems can also occur because of Bad Hard Disk, read :
Identify Problems Related To Hard Disks Health.

While working on Windows, if you feel any slowness, unresponsiveness,
freezing etc. problem, then the quickest thing is to use the Task
Manager utility. Using Task Manager, most of the time you can resolve
application conflicts and software freezing issues.

It's a first place which you should visit immediately to take a look
at the Running Softwares, Processes and Services. You can also see how
much busier your Processor and RAM really is. Beside all these, there
are tons of other advance things which you can perform at Task Manager
in order to quickly heal your PC from all the said problems.

Task Manager Basics -- Overview

Now let me explain you the basics of the Task Manager (more like an
overview of it), which will help us to understand the advance features
of it which will be discussed in the future articles.

How To Open Task Manager

1. Traditional method to open Task Manager is by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL
and then selecting the Task Manager option from the Screen.

2. The second method, which is quickest to achieve the same task is
with the help of a keyboard shortcut. Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC key and it
will immediately bring the Task Manager window on the screen.

3. The third method which is not known to many people is, Right Click
the Taskbar and select Start Task Manager option from the context
menu.

It's up to you to use the method which is more easy to you to open the
Task Manager utility in Windows.

Subject: Off Topic Mail-Come August, blood is just a phone call away

May 8, 2013, 8:00 IST | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA

Maitri Porecha
Dial 102 to get bags delivered within an hour.

There is no need to panic if you urgently require blood. Just dial 102. From
August, citizens will be able to get blood bags delivered to them within a
radius of 10 km.

After successfully experimenting with the blood-on-call scheme on a pilot basis
in Satara and Sindhudurg districts, the state government is set to roll out the
programme to four more districts, including Mumbai, from August 1.

The scheme will be rolled out in Mumbai, Parbhani, Gadchiroli and Amravati.
Delivery boys on motorcycles will make trips to collect blood samples and
deliver a suitable match after the call is received, all within an hour, said
Dr Sanjay Jadhav, head, State Blood Transfusion Council.

Every private hospital and nursing home in the state will display information
and helpline number. Anyone needing blood can dial and place a request for
blood. The delivery boy will come and collect patient's blood samples. After
pathological testings, blood pouches of suitable match will be delivered from
cold storage sites to patients admitted in a nursing home or hospital within a
10-km radius.

Moreover, the patient won't have to pay more than Rs100 for acquiring a blood
bag.

Currently, patients end up paying two to four times the cost to get a blood bag
from a private blood bank. The objective of the scheme or the 'Jeevan Amrut
Seva' is to make the process of getting blood hassle-free for a patient.

State health officials are in the process of mapping the city to determine the
feasibility of setting up 10 cold storage centres in state-, BMC- and trust-run
hospitals which will store blood bags.

The cold storage box replete with blood bags will be carried by the delivery
boy. The box will have a digital display which will constantly flash the
temperature maintained between two and eight degrees Celsius, said Jadhav.

The scheme will see an investment of up to Rs10 crore by the state government
as it rolls out in the other 28 districts of Maharashtra eventually. We are,
at the moment, putting in place logistics to identify and rope in private
agencies which will provide us with motorbikes and driver services. The service
providers will be paid Rs4 per km, added Jadhav.

The scheme started in Satara district in mid-February. Close to 42 nursing
homes have already endorsed it and up to 67 units of blood have been delivered
on call in the past three months, informed health officials.
