[AI] quiry regarding borland C++

2013-05-25 Thread Rejin Jose k.
hello friends,
ive installed borland C++ compiler and configured it correctly.but
while i checked the 'how to compile' part in the web site,i read like
this.i'm pasting that part below:
So, now that you are armed with all this information you are probably
wondering "How do I turn my source code into a program?" We will start
with the simplest
case of a single source file, console program. Here is the source code
of a file called simple.cpp that I wrote in the text editor, notepad:
#include
  int main(void) { printf("Output from running program");
return 0; }
To build this into a program we only need to call the compiler. However,
the compiler needs to know what source file to build and where to find
the header files and the library files. We pass these to the compiler
as command
line options as shown:

bcc32 -If:\Borland\bcc55\include -Lf:\Borland\bcc55\Lib simple.cpp

The resulting program is called simple.exe and can be run by typing
simple at the command-line.

Now, let's look at the case of a console program with two source
modules. simple.cpp will contain our entry point main and will call a
function defined
in the other module, funcs.cpp.

simple.cpp

#include "funcs.h"  int main(void) {return PrintSomeOutput("Output
from running program"); } funcs.h #include int
PrintSomeOutput(char*
output); and funcs.cpp #include int PrintSomeOutput(char*
output) {   printf(output); return 0; }
To build this, simply add funcs.cpp to
the previous compiler command-line as such:

bcc32 -If:\Borland\bcc55\include -Lf:\Borland\bcc55\Lib simple.cpp funcs.cpp

So what happens if you have a bunch of different include and library
directories. Or hundreds of source files. As you can imagine the
command-line for
this would be huge. You have two choices. Wrap up all of these
commands into a batch file or use a makefile. Makefiles are
prefferred.
---
In the last paragraph they are saying about wrapping up of all files
into a batch file or using makefile to use compile command easily.I
dont know how to do this wrapping or makefile. So please guide
me,which would be better and how to make use of it.please give me step
by step instruction.
thanks in advance.

Re: [AI] Press release: Sambhavana files its suggestions on FYUP in DU

2013-05-25 Thread Kartik Sawhney
Hi,

I just read through the Mathematics syllabus on the DU website, and
two main points striked me:

1. A lot of information in this course will be presented
electronically, in the form of slides and spreadsheets. Now, it should
be important that a blind student using a computer be provided with
these files before the class in advance. For those students not using
a computer, the teacher should read out and explain the slides while
in the classroom, and should then provide the student with the
softcopy which he/she may refer to later either at home or at EOC
(using EOC computers, if feasible).
2. The course does not cover plane geometry, and hence tactile
diagrams will not be a necessity. the course, however, deals with
statistics (which has plots). I would recommend trying Math Tracks
from NASA for graphs. It works well in most of the cases. If Math
Tracks does not work, verbal discriptions of graphs would be another
viable options (elementary statistics as outlined in the curriculum
does not include graphs that cannot be described accurately).

Further, in several cases where visual representation is asked for,
the teachers may substitute it with alternate textual approaches. I
agree that it is crutial for a blind student to be well-acquainted
with visual forms, however what is more important is understanding of
the concept. For example, when plotting a graph to represent the
sidereal period of planets and solar distance, what is important is
for the student to realise the relationship between the period and the
distance from the sun. This can very well be conveyed using a tabular
data as well. (BTW, an audio representation of this plot has been
developped by a Geology major in the United States!)

I couldn't get through the Science curriculum on the website, so am
not sure about that.

*These are my personal views only.

Re: [AI] Press release: Sambhavana files its suggestions on FYUP in DU

2013-05-25 Thread Kartik Sawhney
Hi,

Great work!

BTW, has the university laid down the curriculum for this foundation
course already?

As I can make out from its name `foundation course`, I do not expect
concepts like stereochemistry and mechanics of organic reactions to be
discussed in great detail. Similarly, in Physics, it seems they willl
simply touch free body diagrams, and will not go in great detail. As
such, things like constrained motion etc. will not be discussed for
sure.

If that is the case, we can very well do away with several adaptations
and/or technologies mentioned in the document, as many of them are
specifically useful in the university setting (when pursuing, say,
B.Sc. in Chemistry). While this document is pretty much exhaustive
(which is indeed good), it will be helpful if we could list down the
technologies that we want in the immediate future. Probably, we could
pick up a domain in Sciences or Mathematics (say algebra in
Mathematics or physical Chemistry) as per the curriculum, and could
then decide on which technology/adaptation works best and is
practical. Nemeth, for instance, is new to most of the students in
India. Spending 4-5 months teaching Nemeth alone isn't worth it in my
view, especially when the same content can be presented in alternate
formats which require less preparation.

Coming to Organic Chemistry: while there are softwares available (as
mentioned in the document), general organic Chemistry can easily be
taught and learnt by using IUPAC conventions alone. As such, these
softwares are only required when dealing with stereochemistry and
reaction mechanisms to provide a 3D visualisation (which can also be
managed to quite an extent with good verbal discription).

Talking about the lab component, a lot depends on the experiments
being covered. For instance, if we are conducting an experiment to
verify Ohm's law, talking ammeter and voltmeter are the only two
instruments required. Being pragmatic, these talking instruments or
the talking probe developed by Independent Science is too expensive.
It's great to read about the less expensive adaptations, which if made
could be really good. But, most of them seem to work for low vision
students only, and not for blind. In these circumstances, readings by
a lab assistant or another student work well. I've participated in lab
classes upto class 12 in this way, and it definitely does not preclude
us from a hands-on experience. After all, what is required is a clear
conceptual understanding of the experiment.

Once again, great work!

[AI] Now, a software to assess disability

2013-05-25 Thread Devdas Nayak

Sunday, May 26, 2013, 7:07 IST | Agency: DNA

Dhaval Kulkarni

The state Information Technology (IT) department has developed a new software
to assess five types of disabilities; visual, hearing, physical, mental
retardation and other mental illnesses.

The Software for Assessment of Disabilities, Maharashtra (SADM) provides
doctors in 42 district hospitals, general hospitals and medical colleges with
login details to access the system. The doctors, who are deemed eligible to
issue the certification by the State, are required to enter details about the
applicant based on which the percentage of disability for the patient is
calculated by the system. The disability certificate will then be generated.

"There is no space for fraud," said an IT official.

As of Friday, 10,737 people were issued disability certificates using SADM
technology out of a total of 16,855 applications. Also, 1,715 rejections were
meted out. So far, 74% of the assessments have been completed.

An official from the IT department said, "The software was developed to
eliminate malpractices and to ascertain that persons suffering from
disabilities could receive available benefits without problems. It will make
the system transparent."

Disability certificates issued by the State can be used to avail concessions
and benefits in education, jobs and to apply for various government schemes
made available for the disabled.

The new system also links the applicants details to the Unique Identification
Authority of India (UIDAI) data. The Aadhaar card data process has made
exceptions for fingerprinting in case an applicant without hands.

The state government had also written to the Centre offering to share the
software with the Government of India and other states.

Dear Avinash,
Thanks for pasting... and re-posting the article.
There are some other hostels located at some very good locations run
by some respectable people. However, so called good hostels too are
not far from such realities. If some former residents are to be
believed, the conditions were very pitiable and girls were forced to
do which they never wanted to do!
Not sure about the current situation.

From: Bookshare
Subject: URGENT: Bookshare Needs Your Help

Dear Bookshare Supporter,

It's not typical for us to send you an email like this, but we felt
this situation was so important it was necessary.

You may already be aware, but for years negotiations have been moving
forward on what many have come to call the "Treaty for the Blind -
http://cts.vresp.com/c/?Benetech/39440e0084/a9b9190c5f/8c6ac19ad5 ."
The goal of the international treaty is to make it possible for
people who are blind, or have other print disabilities such as
dyslexia, to get access to the books they need for education,
employment and inclusion in society--no matter where they live. It's
something we already do, with great success, in the United States
through Bookshare.

However, private interests are trying to alter the treaty in such a
way that it would become useless--even harmful. For example, they're
trying to get language adopted that basically says: "if you can buy
it, you can't borrow it." This is not only an attack on people around
the world with print disabilities--it's also an attack on libraries,
like Bookshare, and could have a drastic effect on the number of
books you have access to.

Our biggest worry is this becoming a treaty that could stop Bookshare
from serving our users in the United States the way we do today. We
need our government negotiating for a treaty that supports a library
like Bookshare.

That's why we're working with a coalition of disability and library
groups, including the National Federation of the Blind and the
American Council of the Blind, to fight back against the proposed
changes by these private interests. We'll do everything we can to
secure a treaty that both protects the access we have now and that
will benefit people with print disabilities around the world--but we
need your help.

We're asking you to take a moment to sign a petition on the White
House's website that urges the President to step up his support: -
http://cts.vresp.com/c/?Benetech/39440e0084/a9b9190c5f/4e4438ce56. If
we can get to 100,000 signatures, the White House is required to
respond to the petition and will, hopefully, take positive action.
With your help we know we can reach that number. We also recommend
the petition -
http://cts.vresp.com/c/?Benetech/39440e0084/a9b9190c5f/f43c9aab46/sid=2&reset=1
at the National Federation of the Blind's site, which is
particularly accessible.

Thank you for your time and support. Together, we believe that our
collective voice can make a real impact.

If you're interested in more background on the treaty, here are some
articles and resources you can review:

Huffington Post piece by Jim on how the treaty is being poisoned by
private interests:
http://cts.vresp.com/c/?Benetech/39440e0084/a9b9190c5f/3f5de5c34d

WIRED Magazine article that gives some recent updates on the treaty:
http://cts.vresp.com/c/?Benetech/39440e0084/a9b9190c5f/7e58bb06a5

Sincerely,
Jim Fruchterman & Betsy Beaumon, Bookshare

P.S. Please post the link to the White House petition on your social
media to help spread the word and get your friends involved! Again,
here is the link: -

[AI] Books for kids

2013-05-25 Thread Rinku Tiwary
Hello Amar do you know any NGO in Bangalore which have story books for
kids?

My son is 2.5 years old and we can make books for kids like we can get book
from store and do braille with white adhesive label sheet or OHP
transparent sheet in that book so that it can be dual reader book. If
possible we can make some tactile also or make story box.
In beginning we can read with them slowly they will do or if we
have audible of that book let it run and your son will read. For my son i
made books and he is enjoying those.

For audible books bookshare is very good.

Thanks

[AI] an overview of dropbox old and new desktop application

2013-05-25 Thread Umair Ijaz
assalam o alaikum and hello friends,

today I would like to write an overview of old and new dropbox.
this article is the result of my own experiences with the app. so, if
there is anything which i explained wrongly then please correct it!
and this article is for beginners, geeks and advanced users always
have no issues so advanced user pleas be patient and also lovers of
wualla or other apps.

now starts the article. if anyone's internet speed is good then new
dropbox is very easy for him not a problem! hmm yes I am saying right
it is an ease. how? yes the answer to this how is that when you
install dropbox and there is no public link in it by default then most
probably you have desktop application of dropbox version above than
1.7 . especially in the series of 2. one thing is that download old
dropbox 1.4 from the following link. old dropbox is good for people
like me. link is :
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/42889981/Dropbox%201.4.17.exe
I have performed a number of experiments. out of these ten or so
experiments , one time even with this same set up file I was unable to
get the public folder. might be possible I skip some steps or dropbox
updates automatically now but this way worked for me. so give it a try
and let me know. now suppose there is no public folder despite of your
hard work then no big deal. put any file you want to share into
dropbbox folder then press application key on it and then dropbox
submenu and arrow right or enter to open it. now down arrow and get
share link option. hit enter on that. wait for a while. on my machine
it takes roughly a minute to launch this web page that is the reason I
did not like this. but if you have less issues with jaws then you will
find this also quick. now alt tab to check the page. page will be like
the name of the uploaded file -dropbox, now down arroe to navigate on
this page. e for edit field write the email id of the person whom you
want to send the mail and then hit enter on send button . no need to
copy the link it will send the link to the person whom you want to
send. in one sense dropbox has shortened the process of first going to
dropbox folder copying the link then go to gmail site then compose
mail then write the mail id then message o o o o , so, now it
is easy .

yes, another way to share the link is that when you come to that
webpage which dropbox opens up then press alt d and ctrl a to select
the address of that page and ctrl c to copy and paste it where you
want. in this case you manually copied the link.

*. one more way is also there!
when webpage comes up now press ctrl end to go to the end of the page.
there is actually the download link of the file. in previous two
methods , the person whom you want to send the file will get the link
to that page and when he will hit enter on the file then will see
that page and will arrow down to the link at the bottom of the page
and will hit enter on that and then will get IDM prompts window to
start download . but if you apply the third way which you are
currently reading then you will send a link and the person who is the
receiver of this link will hit enter on the link and the IDM prompt
window will comes up asking for start download as it was the case in
old dropbox times on the receiver end. so, how to get this link??

as I said that ctrl end to the bottom of the page and focus on the
link which is the name of your shared or uploaded file , press
application key and hit enter on create shortcut , it will place the
shortcut on your clipboard. paste any where which you want or send to
the person. if you look at the link, as I keenly do for all types of
web links and mail ids, you will come to know that this link is
somewhat different from the traditional links in the ending part of
the link. any how it works well. it was the overview of dropbox , hope
so i will be able to clear doubts of most of the users.

[AI] how to skip advertisement on youtube wideo

2013-05-25 Thread Shona Man
When I play any video on youtube, some time before actual video
begins, the advertisement starts, and some time the advertisement is
too long as it irritates me. Is there any way to skip this
advertisement through keyboard, I know it can be skipped by cursor but
how by keyboard?
also tell me is any key stroke to move forward the video directly by
minute? say for e.g. if i am watching the movie and there is a song
in between, can I skip the song by fast forwarding it by 5 minutes or
so?.

[AI] : They capture the world in their mind’s eye

2013-05-25 Thread Dr Satendra Singh
Dear List,

I was quite surprised to see that Partho Bhowmick's last year's 'Blind with
Camera' workshop-cum-exhibition at Delhi was not covered in the archives. I
think the man deserves accolade so posting the Times of India article here
about the Delhi visit by 'Blind with Camera'.

They capture the world in their mind’s eye
Shreya Roy Chowdhury, TNN Oct 8, 2012,

NEW DELHI: "Ek cycle bana rakhi hai," says Naresh, unimpressed. He studies
the tactile image of a boy cycling by the sea in Mumbai, the description in
Braille, then hears the audio description. That's the only way, Naresh,
blinded at age two, can enjoy a photo exhibition. "I could take this photo
too," he declares finally, adding after a pause, "If the road is clear."

The third-year student was part of a batch of visually-impaired DU students
to participate in a workshop meant to draw out "the images in their minds."
The workshop was organized by Infinite Ability (disability group at
University College of Medical Sciences) and Beyond Sight Foundation.

Partho Bhowmick, founder of Mumbai-based Beyond Sight, can handle 15-20
participants at a time and typically works with a student for a year before
they acquire the skills to photograph by following the sense they still
retain. He trained about a dozen DU students at Friday's workshop; another
batch on Saturday and NGO employees on Sunday.

He starts by handing out cameras to groups of two or three and left the
students to get a feel of them — find the buttons, lens, screens. They also
set out to get familiar with the location — Alliance Francaise in Lodhi
Estate. An exhibition of 42 photographs taken by similar workshop
participants over the past six years will be on display at AF till October
18. There is a manual of tactile images and multimedia audio-descriptions
for about 20 of them to make the show disabled-friendly.

The photo Naresh had studied so closely was taken in 2009, by Ravi Thakur,
born blind. He had heard the cycle coming, was confused by the crash of the
waves, but was able to capture the image of the cycling boy all the same.
Naresh had tried working his mobile phone camera once. "I tried taking my
uncle's photo. Usme kaan hi kaan aye (I captured only an ear)," he says.

The students were asked to follow sounds, locate subjects through touch and
hold a camera steady and straight. Dr Satendra Singh of UCMS flit about
helping students find their shutter-release buttons.

Those born blind follow sound and touch, the late-blind (those who lose
vision later) use touch and sound, and that's supplemented by the memory of
sighted life, and those with low-vision have "residual sight". The
late-blind have "memories of a sighted life", as Bhowmick puts it, but the
faces "erode first". "It's because in our sighted life, we see faces the
most." Mahesh Umrannia heard the rustle of leaves, felt the warmth of the
sun and called up from memory the pattern of leaves on trees. He
photographs the reflections of leaves on a pavement.

The low-visioned have "residual sight" and photos produced by them are very
close to pictures clicked by the sighted. Satvir Jagi, in 2009, clicked a
photo of a spiral-staircase from bottom. When I showed him the print, he
told me it looks like a cycle's wheel," says Bhowmick.

A photo clicked on digital cameras, in fact, makes visible elements of the
photographed subject that those with low-vision can't see with the naked
eye. Raju Singh, in 2006, had photographed a series of pillars and a man
sitting at the base of one close to the photograper.

"People with low vision have depth-of-field issues. They can see things
close to them. But digital cameras come with LCD screens and on the screen
- as also in the photograph - every part of the part of the photograph is
at the same distance from the eye," explains Bhowmick, "Raju Singh,
therefore, could see in the photograph what he couldn't see in real life."
Raju supposedly commented, "Photography helps me see." And Bhowmick used
this to wrangle digital cameras from two companies for the workshops.

Till 2006, Bhowmick's engagement with the visually impaired was limited to
helping them cross the road. He was another corporate man - his day job is
in adhesives - but with an interest in photography.

Unlike many who enter the 'disability sector', he had no prior experience
in dealing with the differently-abled. In 2004, he'd bought a book - a
bargain at 10 bucks - containing an article on French blind photographer,
Evgan Bavcer. With some difficulty, he got in touch with Bavcer and through
him, a global consortium called Art Beyond Sight. Till 2005, he carried out
"independent research on visual art and blindness." In 2006, he launched
his project with one student, Sunil Bhavsar, who photographed the Victoria
Memorial School for the Blind from the front. The work's titled, "My
School."

Re: [AI] JAWS issue in LAptop

2013-05-25 Thread mukesh jain
hello,
there might be several reasons for it. so first please check the
startup programs. if there are too many programs starting on logon,
then these might be requiring you to connect to the internet and upon
connecting to the internet, these might be busy searching their
servers.

please do also check pending notifications in the system tray if
asking you to update any program.

since you are using windows 7 on your laptop, you may find the option
solve number of items on your pc.

please do also check the remaining size of your primary hard drive as
if its on the verge of occupying maximum space and if little is
balance, then program may start responding slow.

you may also try to use the option of repair jaws if its the issue
with only jaws.

please note that these are my personal observations which i have faced
it myself and rectifying them solved my similar problem earlier.

so you may try it out if it works for you.
thanks,
