Accessible App Competition
06-06-2013 04:11 PM BST

Body:
Are you a budding app developer? Would you like to develop an accessible app?

Transport for London (TfL) are running a competition with a £5000 prize to
design an accessible travel app for bus and rail customers. With the rise in
the use of smart phones and tablets you could have a positive impact on a
number of people by making them more independent by providing information that
they had struggled to access before.

TfL have made available some of the data that could be included in the app such
as timetables, London charge points and traffic disruption information.

There is a 7 step guidance document about getting started with creating
accessible apps and other resources that may be useful on the OneVoiceICT
website.

The closing date for the competition is the 30th August 2013.

For more information visit the competition page on the TfL website

If your OS were of 32bit, you could run it in the compatibility mode the
way
I'm running, but unfortunately for 64bit, no option is available, and,
what

is worse that even the company wouldn't be able to help in this regards
because this model of the scanner is more than 10 years old now.

This is because you may not have checked the box regarding its compatibility
mode, but I'm afraid in 64bit this trick along with the method I described
in my earlier mail will not work.

Dear Vikas sir,

When I used it in 32 bit, there used to appear a dialog at the start
of the computer that this driver does not support the OS. But it was
working fine once I cancel that dialog. So, I believe I can give it a
try on 64 bit also. Please provide the link from where I can download
it.

Re: [AI] Required driver for Umax 4100 scanner for windows 7

2013-06-06 Thread Vikas Kapoor
Once the scanner installs, go to all programmes submenu and look for 4100
USB scanner and within that, there must be an application
4100_USB_Scanner_Utility, which basically starts the scanner driver, go the
property of this application and in the compatibility tab, check the box
which says run this programme in compatibility mode and in the next section
you need to specify/select the OS with which you think it was working fine.
also if would be better if you check the box which says run this programme
as administrator and you are done!

WASHINGTON, June 5, 2013 -- /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National
Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), a non-profit public-private
partnership focused on helping all digital citizens stay safer and
more secure online, is celebrating Internet Safety Month this June by
encouraging all digital users to STOP. THINK. CONNECT. when accessing
the Web. Summer break brings increased Internet use and NCSA advises
everyone to take security measures, understand the consequences of
their behavior and actions and enjoy the benefits of the Internet.

(Logo:

Internet Safety Month is the perfect time for youth and parents to
assess and improve their online safety posture. According to Pew
Internet & American Life Project's "Teens and Technology 2013 Report,"
95 percent of U.S. teens use the Internet and 93 percent have a
computer or have access to one at home. Pew also found that 37 percent
of teens have smartphones – a 14 percent increase from 2011. These
figures give compelling reason for all families to focus on better
online safety.

"The Internet is a way of life for many – especially young people,"
said Michael Kaiser, executive director of the National Cyber Security
Alliance. "As everyone gets ready to enjoy the summer, we encourage
parents to take the time to be sure their children are aware of how to
stay safer and more secure online by reviewing basic safety tips and
good online behavior."

These three easy, actionable steps: STOP. THINK. CONNECT. can help
everyone stay safe and secure online and enjoy the benefits of our
connected world. Here are some other best practices:

•Keep a Clean Machine: Keep all Internet connected devices free from
infection and malware by keeping all critical software—security
software, Web browsers, apps and operating systems—up to date.
•Protect Your Personal Information: Secure your accounts by making
passwords long, strong and unique.
•Connect with Care: Limit the type of business you conduct using
unsecure Wi-Fi hotspots.
•Own Your Online Presence: Set security and privacy settings to your
comfort level of sharing.
•When in Doubt, Throw it Out: If an email, social network post or text
message looks suspicious, even if you know the source, delete it.
•Be Web Wise: Be wary of communications that implore you to act
immediately, offer something that sounds too good to be true or ask
for personal information.
•Be a Good Online Citizen: Post only about others what you would have
them post about you.

Additional STOP. THINK. CONNECT. tips and advice is available at:
www.stopthinkconnect.org. NCSA is also observing the month with two
Twitter Chats. A Twitter Chat on online safety tips for the LGBT
community in honor of Internet Safety Month and LGBT Pride Month will
take place on Thursday, June 13 at 3 p.m. ET with the LGBT Technology
Partnership (@LGBTTech), Microsoft (@Safer_Online), STOP. THINK.
CONNECT. (@STOPTHNKCONNECT) and other guests. Participants can follow
along at #ChatSTC.

A second Twitter Chat about online safety tips for parents will take
place on Thursday, June 20 at 3 p.m. ET with ConnectSafely
(@ConnectSafely), STOP. THINK. CONNECT. (@STOPTHNKCONNECT) and other
guests. For more information about the chats, visit
www.stopthinkconnect.org/twitterchats.

June also marks NCSA's starting countdown to the 10th annual National
Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) in October. To commemorate the
first of many celebrations for the 10th anniversary, NCSA has unveiled
a new NCSAM web portal at: www.staysafeonline.org/ncsam. You can also
connect with the organization for the latest news and updates on
Facebook at www.facebook.com/staysafeonline and on Twitter at
@StaySafeOnline.

About The National Cyber Security Alliance The National Cyber Security
Alliance is a non-profit organization. Through collaboration with the
government, corporate, non-profit and academic sectors, the mission of
the NCSA is to educate and empower a digital citizenry to use the
Internet securely and safely protecting themselves and the technology
they use and the digital assets we all share. NCSA board members

Dear Vikas sir,

When I used it in 32 bit, there used to appear a dialog at the start
of the computer that this driver does not support the OS. But it was
working fine once I cancel that dialog. So, I believe I can give it a
try on 64 bit also. Please provide the link from where I can download
it.

I'm running, but unfortunately for 64bit, no option is available, and,

2013-06-06 Thread Ashik
It's not available, my friend. I am suffering from the same problem. I have
the same model of scanner and can't switch to Windows7 from XP because of
the scanner. I have only two options: I have to continue with Xp, or I have
to purchase a new scanner.

Hello Mr,
Why don't you insert end notes instead of footnotes? I hope there are
no issues with Jaws while inserting end notes. But your research
supervisor must purmit you to do so.

I don't find any problem in inserting a footnote in word 2003. I always
 use

I just read an edit these notes using the f6 key. For positioning them,
 I
always depend on the insert / reference / footnotes dialogue box.

Let us know if you find some better option.

If your OS were of 32bit, you could run it in the compatibility mode the way
I'm running, but unfortunately for 64bit, no option is available, and, what
is worse that even the company wouldn't be able to help in this regards
because this model of the scanner is more than 10 years old now.

Re: [AI] removing line breaks in a text format

2013-06-06 Thread Ekinath Khedekar
Hello Amiyoda,

Thanks for letting know of this technique.
However, I just used it and the data became 1 large paragraph.
I think, I haven’t understood your double and tripple ^ formulae.

When I copy paste some stuff from a site. Many line breaks occur other
than regular paragraphs.

Now, I tried your method, even regular paras became one.

One more thing, when two faulty paragraphing became one it didn’t
create any space between two words, the one last in the first line and
the first in the second line.

Thanking you

Re: [AI] unable to boot from external hard drive after

2013-06-06 Thread Gaurav Pareek
The problem is that formatting a hard drive doesn't necessarily remove
the Master Boot Record, which has the bootloader installed. You'll have
to delete all partitions on that drive, and then create a new partition
table on it so the MBR is overwritten.

If you would like to be featured on the esha achiever of the month, please

Subject: [AI] unable to boot from external hard drive after installing vinux on
it

hi all first of all please excuse me for the long mail as this is a big problem.
i had installed vinux on my external hard drive just to play with it a
little more and to learn how updates work and all.
then i had to uninstall vinux cause i had to use the drive to install
windows8 on a computer that doesnt have dvd drive so i just removed
the partitions on which vinux was installed by using gparted for
windows and converted the hard drive to 1 ntfs partition and copied

Re: [AI] removing line breaks in a text format

2013-06-06 Thread Mohib Anwar Rafel
Hi Amiyo please be more elaberative, as I could not understand your
coding system and this>3 system. suppose I have some text which has
several line breaks, infact each line has unwanted break with out
ending with full stop, now I want to remove this line break and I want
this text in such a format that each new line in original document
could be placed in new document in such a way that it join previous
line after a gap of space.

suppose here is the sentence,

I want to take
admission in any professional
college so that
I could earn a professional
degree.
Now what should I do to do it in MS word to make full sentence with
out line breaks through find and replace dialogue?

Hi Amiyo, thanks very much for teaching me these two new things of
 which I was unaware.
But still I am struck with the problem relating to the footnotes. As I
am copying all text by pressing control+A, and pasting it as
unformatted text by choosing "paste special" under edit menue,
footnotes are not being copied, only the text is coming. Hi members
 any clue?

Re: [AI] Feedback on Talking ATM

2013-06-06 Thread Himanshu Sahu
If it is so, then really a nice move by HDFC!
We need many more of such ATMs throughout the country. But I would
like to know that whether anybody has used the IVR features in any of
HDFC’s ATMs?
We must however be aware about the distinction between ATMs having
in-built speech system which are actually not the IVR system; hence it
supports only fewer functions of ATM. Whereas the IVR system, which is
specially developed for supporting certain models of ATMs, enables VI
to do all transactions independently with offering various options.

Re: [AI] removing line breaks in a text format

2013-06-06 Thread akhilesh
Hi Renuka,

As far as I know, there is no other method except using Kurzweil for
this purpose.
Open the text file with Kurzweil, Go to find and replace by pressing
control+F, Type \n\n in the find field, type \n in the replace, and
press replace all button.
Hear \n means one linebreak and \n\n means. two linebreaks s.

I'm using this method since last 9 years!

Thanks,

Subject: [SayEverything] Blind trust of blind women in Delhi

Thank you very much Sanchit for sharing this article which I think for
the first time has delved deep in to exposing painful experience of
women with blindness who reside in various so called private hostels
in the capital.
I've given the original title with some addation in the subjectline.
safe accommodation for blind women is the desperate need of the hour
otherwise, quality education and employment will remain distant dream
for majority of them.
This article is worth-preserving thanks again this will help me in my
research titled: Persons with Disability act 1995: a Study in Delhi
And Sanchit, I am pasting this article and sharing on other lists as
well for more wider readership to let people know the harsh realities
of life of women with blindness.
Article Begins
Seema had just one dream: an independent and financially secure life.
It took some time for this feisty visually impaired teenager from a
middle-class family in the northeast to convince her parents that she,
too, needed to go to school like her siblings. Finally, her father
packed her bags and brought her to a school-cum-hostel for blind women
in Vikaspuri, Delhi. Seema was happy and certain that she would become
a lawyer someday.

That was six years ago. Sitting in a dark, dingy room on the first
floor of a hostel for blind women, the political science student says,
“Perhaps what I wanted to do would just remain a dream.” It seems
Seema is not the only one with shattered dreams; her 36 hostel mates
apparently share her sentiment. Finding a decent roof above their
heads is what drains these blind women of their resolve.

Seema's hostel is a damp dilapidated building in Sant Nagar, Delhi.
While the food they get is far from palatable, the rooms are
overcrowded. The open gutters that lead to the hostel get flooded
during monsoons, making it impossible for people like Seema to
navigate their way. But what has hurt this 21-year-old most is the
attitude of people on the road: she says most of them try to take
advantage of her disability. “But what makes me so helpless is the
fact that I cannot even see them. Earlier, I was living a
claustrophobic life and here I am fighting every moment to keep my
self-esteem and my dignity intact. I want to fight, but ‘the war'
seems never ending. And I am not sure, if I can ever win it,” she
says.

Another hostel for the blind in Nathupura is home to six women who
study at Delhi University, about 15km away. Every day they have to
walk a kilometre and a half to reach the highway, cross the road to
board a shared auto-rickshaw and then take a bus to the university. It
takes no less than an hour and a half and they need at least three
‘considerate' people who can help them cross the road and board an
auto-rickshaw and the right bus.

The daily ordeal apart, their hostel is dingy and reeks of rotten
food. The rooms are dirty, and a bed and an open shelf count as
furniture. The staircase to the rooms on the first floor is narrow. To
add to this, the windows are not covered, denying them privacy, says
an inmate. The rooms get overcrowded during the summer holidays when
other college hostels close for vacations and their inmates, too, come
here.

Every year, around 500 blind students seek admission at Delhi
University, which has 15 per cent reservation for students with
disability. But unfortunately, the university hostel has just 3 per
cent reservation. Also, the annual charges for the hostel mess ranges
from Rs.35,000 to Rs.80,000, which is not affordable for many. In all,
there are about 1,500 disabled students studying at DU. Of these,
hardly 200 students live in hostels provided by colleges. The rest are
left to fend for themselves.

Surprisingly, the government does not have any provision to provide
accommodation for blind women students. (The state runs Seva Kutir for
blind men.) This has led to a spurt in the number of hostels for women
by NGOs, most of which are not registered under Section 56 of the PWD
Act and are located in underdeveloped areas like Sant Nagar, Begampur,
Nihalpur, Rama Nagar, Burari and Nathupura.
