[AI] UGC: Epic fail, Indian Express Editorial
Many of us appeared for NET held on Sunday gone by. Now as we felt shocked at many questions during the exam, our views has been echoed in an editorial in The Indian Express. Hope better sense prevail among question-papers preparers next time. http://www.indianexpress.com/news/epic-fail/1136803/0 The UGC's test for entry-level university teachers reveals sexist and condescending assumptions The University Grants Commission has made some outrageous errors of judgement in framing its examination for teacher aptitude in the National Eligibility Test (NET). One of the multiple choice questions asked: At the primary school stage, most teachers should be women because. This is a patently disputable assumption, and the choices provided were all problematic, steeped in sexist stereotypes. The idea that women teach children better than men is probably drawn from the observation that, in many homes, it is a woman's responsibility to provide early nurturing, to teach a child how to learn, and introduce elementary ideas. This is not because women are especially talented at it, but because men seldom take it up with enthusiasm. That women know basic content better than men is equally condescending. The unspoken extension would be, women teach children better with basics, so that men can take over at the higher, more evolved levels? Another choice, can deal with children with love and affection, is also about freezing gender roles, where women share and care and love, while men compete and prod each other to greater achievement. It is a crass reduction of human personality into two types. The most appalling suggestion, of course, was that women make better primary school teachers because they are available on lower salaries. Even if it was the wrong answer, it is incredible that it was even articulated as an option by the body that regulates and oversees higher education in India. The NET was devised as an attempt to standardise measures of quality for entry-level teaching staff. It is no surprise that this aim has been undercut — the aptitude test speaks for itself. The questions are clearly open to subjective interpretation. Several of the answer options provided could be credibly argued in an essay, but they may or may not be what the test-setters had in mind. Some of the analogies are bewildering — for instance, bee-honey, cow-milk, teacher-? The options are: intelligence, marks, lessons, wisdom. The test reflects the unexamined prejudices of those who drafted it. These bloopers are particularly egregious because they come from such a powerful source. As a regulator of higher education, the UGC has given itself the mandate to control curricula, to manage appointments, to direct the flow of funds. It is alarming that this kind of dotty thinking and illogic can pass among those who confidently dictate to universities. -- Avinash Shahi MPhil Research Scholar Centre for the Study of Law and Governance Jawaharlal Nehru University New Delhi India Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] Paying online? Get website name right
Paying online? Get website name right Raj ShekharRaj Shekhar, TNN | Jul 3, 2013, 09.29 AM IST NEW DELHI: Not so long ago, there would be long queues in front of government offices of hassled bill payers. But when the banks initiated online operations, government departments followed suit. Today online bill payments have become the hot target of cyber crooks, say police. Most of the complaints we get are from middle class people who have been duped of their hardearned money in the space of a few clicks or calls, said a cyber cell officer . The most common modus operandi is making the customer use the wrong website for making payments . Fraudsters usually play around with the name of the original website with the intent to confuse consumers. For an authentic website, say abc.com, crooks may come up with ab.com or abc.co.in. One should be careful with the name and other details, said Pavan Duggal, a cyber law expert. 'Customer care' calls which ask consumers to reveal personal information are another hazard. A real customer care officer would never ask for passwords and PIN, and if need be, divert the call to interactive voice response, the officer added. While there has been a 46% rise in cases under IT Act in Delhi, Faridabad and Ghaziabad have witnessed a rise of 67%. Delhi Police registered 73 cases under IT Act in 2012 and arrested 17 people, including a foreign national. In 2011, 50 cases were registered under the Act. We are an easy target. Those in the service sector are a busy lot and not always savvy or organized enough to conduct online transactions safely. They are gullible and easily persuaded to part with personal info, said Kishore Mishra, an insurance company manager. How to guard against cyber fraud? One way is to keep a separate account for utility payments. If all your bills add up to around Rs 10,000 monthly, one can transfer this money to the new account. This way, if a fraud occurs, you stand to lose less money, Duggal said. One should also watch out while shopping online and refrain from using websites offering abnormally large discounts and incredible deals. [AI] RGNF for Disabled: why Aadhaar Number is compulsory?
Dear Friends I'm shocked to see that Recently facilitated Online link for application submission for availing RGNF the UGC has asked Aadhaar Number in application foarm. As we are aware, in the original document UID's chairman Nandan Nelikani has clearily assured that Aadhaar number will not be compulsory and will remain voluntary. Then why this compulsion? I have other cards which clearily proves my identity as an Indian citizen like PAN card, Electoral Identity card, Rashon Card, Passbook and University Identity Card. But despite holding all cards except Aadhaar I can not apply for RGNF. Friends India’s UID has been unveiled on the pledge that it will make every citizen, the poor in particular, visible to the state. But it raises crucial issues relating to profiling, tracking and surveillance and it may well facilitate a dramatic change in the relationship between the state and the people. The Constitution provides the citizen with dignity and privacy; these are ignored by the UIDAI project. UIDAi has said that getting on to the uid database is voluntary. That is it is clear that there will be no compulsion from the authority. But if other agencies make the UID number essential in their transactions, that is a different matter. The UIDAI has signed the memoranda of understanding with many players including banks, state governments and the life insurance corporations of India. isn't it a double standard? (Ramanathan, 2010: p 1). And Now memorandum has been signed with UGC as well. Now what to do how can I avail RGNF in the absence of Aadhaar number? And who knows there may be many disabled like me who also do not have Aadhaar number. This means we all are excluded from availing RGNF. Any solution for this problem will be highly appreciated. Re: [AI] UGC: Epic fail, Indian Express Editorial
tell me please sir what was the write answer of 1st question of paper 1 On 7/3/13, Shireen Irani shireen@gmail.com wrote: thanx a lot for posting this. i have always been disgusted with the question framing practices for the net exam, and this really takes the cake. truely shameful for academitians to do this for such a prestigious exam. thank god i am free from giving it. On 7/3/13, avinash shahi shahi88avin...@gmail.com wrote: Many of us appeared for NET held on Sunday gone by. On 7/3/13, avinash shahi shahi88avin...@gmail.com wrote: Many of us appeared for NET held on Sunday gone by. Re: [AI] RGNF for Disabled: why Aadhaar Number is compulsory?
hello avinash I think aadhar id may not be compulsory for rgnf. it must be optional. only those fields are to be filled necessarily which are followed by star sign. if it has star sign then it is surely to be filled with aadhar id. else not. On 7/3/13, avinash shahi shahi88avin...@gmail.com wrote: OK, that Claim of the Government is well-taken. But what about those who have no fingers? and those also who have corneal blindness. How their fingers will be scanned? and Iris scanning is difficult. Further, intrusion in private life is unacceptable. Once you are on Database, your activities and actions are well-be within the state scanner. Unfortunately, slowly slowly all services will demand Aadhaar number. And if you have to avail state's services, you will have to surrender. And now contrary to my conviction and principle, in order to avail money from the state, I will have to enrol for Aadhaar card. On 7/3/13, markandeswar rao bandi markandeswar.ba...@gmail.com wrote: hi friend govt payments bass upon Aadhar (uid) through money transfer controlling coreption and also duplicate accounts controling On 7/3/13, avinash shahi shahi88avin...@gmail.com wrote: Dear Friends I'm shocked to see that Recently facilitated Online link for application submission for availing RGNF the UGC has asked Aadhaar Number in application foarm.
