Friends, may I know, can a blind person have his or her own vehicle?
Is there any formality especially for the blind people to own the
 vehicle? Please let me know.

Rajdhani Rides, a project by the Centre for Women Safety and
 Empowerment,
is a newly launched dial-an-auto service. Booking an auto is as simple as
calling 011-30516000 thirty minutes in advance with details of travel. A
confirmation SMS followed by an auto within the area will make it's way
 to
you. Each driver's record is pre-vetted, autos fitted with GPS trackers,
journey billed by meter and a printed bill presented to you at the end of
your journey. The service is open to all commuters but preference given
 to
 women and the elderly.

[AI] Disability, Intersectionality and Deprivation: An Excluded Agenda

2013-08-08 Thread avinash shahi
By G.C. Pal
Indian Institute of Dalit Studies
Abstract
Block quote start
Social perspective on disability affirms that a large number of
persons with disabilities struggle to lead a normal life because of
stereotypical attitudes, social stigma, discrimination and neglect.
Various socio-cultural conditions also interact with different types
of disability in a complex manner to make the overall life
qualitatively different. The critical issue is that the interface of
disability with other social identities is more likely to compound
problem, which by and large is overlooked. With the recognition that
understanding the intersections of multiple forms of dis-crimination
has a powerful human rights dimension and greater social significance
for inclusion, this article is an attempt to examine the interface of
disability and caste on living conditions of persons with
disabilities. Drawing on data primarily from the latest National
Sample Survey, the article throws light on the circumstances of the
persons with disabilities across social groups, with a special focus
on Dalits (scheduled castes) with disabilities. It is revealed that
despite several special interventions for the social integration of
dalits and persons with disabilities, dalits with disabilities are
doubly disadvantaged. The article argues for the preferential support
services and socio-psychological interventions for the group within
the larger framework of inclusiveness.

2013-08-08 Thread avinash shahi
Dear Shireen
So what about conducting survey across India to ascertain:
1. Caste status of All blind Faculty across universities.
I know in Delhi University, Upper caste disabled are in
disproportionate numbers as teachers.
2. Over the last ffew years bank have employed hundreds of blind
people as Clerks/PO but there also SC, ST OBC and women are in meagre
numbers.
We should have data to advocate for more affirmative action for the
inclusion of Dalit and tribal disabled men/women.

Social perspective on disability affirms that a large number of
persons with disabilities struggle to lead a normal life because of
stereotypical attitudes, social stigma, discrimination and neglect.
Various socio-cultural conditions also interact with different types

disability with other social identities is more likely to compound
problem, which by and large is overlooked.
The article argues for the preferential support
services and socio-psychological interventions for the group within
 the larger framework of inclusiveness.

sure. i'd love to.
but i'm not sure how much that would help us fight the cause.
because that would only give us statistics. what happens then. i mean
y should people with a tripple disadvantage be favoured against those
that have a single issue?? in fact the matter can be easily dismissed
on the grounds that we already have a disabled quota. and if that is
full, then those from sc st backgrounds have another quota to count
on.
i'm just playing the devol's advocate here. so if your serious about
it, we need to construct something more than those statistics to put
through a good apeal. i for 1 do not have any legal knowledge

for it, lets build a team. of experts from all fields. advocates,
statisticians, etc.
i think that's the need of the our. so even the apeal will go on
behalf of a concrete organized body.
and the survey is surely a good starting point!!
