[AI] Disabled persons must remain united
Dear friends, I am of the firm opinion that disabled persons must remain united irrespective of caste, creed and economic status. If one observes the status of disabled persons in any caste or religion, their status is same. It is the job of politicians to divide people based on caste, religion, gender etc and, we people with disabilities do not benefit from this kind of division. Many of us are not treated as equals even in our own families, then what to think of society? Creating further divisions based on caste, religion and economic status will further weaken our position in society. Therefore, I appeal to all persons with disabilities to unite if we want to achieve success. However, every person is free to think and do whatever he or she wants to do it. But it is in the interest of all of us that we should broaden our thinking and we must not speak the language of politicians who never think of people of the country, they think of grabbing power. Re: [AI] Deaf, mute dalit widow molested by caste Hindu trio in Thoothukudi
Hello, do those defending Hinduism mean to say caste system does not give any power or authority for the dominant HINDU UPPER CASTES? continuing this discussion may lead to the revelation of some disturbing facts about the prevalence of caste hierarchy among the disabled. Have you ever minded of the total Hindu disabled population, their caste ratio, and the percentage accessing higher education and assistive technologies from the lowered castes? I can understand your Hindu-mind, and would respect it if it also thinks of all Hindus as equal. Are you, first of all, true to your own religious sentiments? If you are so true to your religion, why should be affended when some other Hindu completely ignored by you is given focuss and importance? But, this is exactly Hinduism, which has leegalized and sanctified oppression and exploitation. only at the abolition of Hinduism lies the liberation of all the marginalized sections, which necessarily includes the disabled community. note: I write this since the moderator's closing of this thread was not respected by those comented yesterday and today. Caste system is the bedrock of Hinduism and one can not deny its exploitative nature. And Scheduled caste disabled are still very far from using screan-reading softwares and aquiring high salaried jobs. And violence on scheduled caste disabled women is rampent. Below sharing few paragraphs from recently published book: 'Disability Gender and State Policy' hope this helps. block quote Prevalence of Disability among Dalits With an estimated figure of 1.8 per cent persons with disabilities in the overall population of India, the prevalence of disability among dalits is found to be remarkably higher (2.4%). About 92 per cent of households with disabled members across social groups have at least one disabled person. About 7 per cent of dalits and upper caste households and 5 per cent of ST households have two disabled persons. It may be noted that there is a positive relationship between the number of disabled persons in households and average size of households across all social groups. The variations across gender reveal higher prevalence of disability among males than females across all social groups. The gender gap is, however, relatively lower among dalits and STs than other social groups, suggesting equal vulnerability of both males and females belonging to dalit and ST communities to disability. The gender gap across different types of disability shows that among dalits, the prevalence of locomotor, hearing and speech disabilities and mental retardation is relatively higher among males than females and the reverse is true for visual disability (blindness and low vision). Mental illness, as a mild form of mental disability, is higher among females across all social groups. The prevalence of locomotor, speech and hearing disabilities is relatively higher among dalits; whereas, the prevalence of mental disability is higher among upper caste groups. Among PWD, higher proportion of disabilities shows in younger age group (Dalai, 2002) also among SCs and STs (Pal, 2010; Addlakha 2013 p: 266). block quote end Now As far as Madam Ishita said: 'I'm leftist and it is my duty to criticise Hindus'. Today is International day for disabled? http://www.indianexpress.com/news/disabled-have-3--quota-in-govt-jobs-but-add-up-to-only-0.12-/1202425/ Three per cent reservation has been provided for the disabled in the Central Civil Services since 2005. However, information provided by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) tells a disappointing story of representation of disabled people in Central government. Out of over 24 lakh employees belonging to Group A, B and C, the total number of persons employed from disabled category was merely 5,014 on January 1, 2012. This information was provided by the DoPT in response to an RTI application filed by The Indian Express. According to the reply, 140 disabled category people were employed in Group A, where total number of such employees is around 77,000. On the other hand, out of around 1.90 lakh employees of Group B category, only 712 were from disabled category. Similarly, the representation of disabled people in around 22.60 lakh employees of Group C category was merely 4,162 according to the reply. Thus, the percentage of the disabled employees in Group A, B and C is 0.18, 0.37 and 0.18 per cent respectively. Total percentage of disabled employees among around 24 lakh employees of all three ranks is merely 0.21 per cent. DoPT said it has arranged this data from various departments of the government. While there is such reservation in Group D as well, the data for it was not provided. -- Let’s stop tolerating or accepting difference, as if we’re so much better for not being different in the first place. You may want to try this approach. There is a DAISY book in the jaws help material that explains how to do this nicely. Re: [AI] Deaf, mute dalit widow molested by caste Hindu trio in Thoothukudi
Absolutely false! For your info, RSS is helping the disabled in the most profound manner. And I must mention that RSS is strictly against the caste system. If a dalit disabled is exploited, its wrong, but if an upper caste disabled is exploited, its not that bad after all, isn't it? I agree, that dalit disabled are facing more challenges as compaired to others, but that doesn't make attrocities commited on them of a more severe nature. If the media is really keen on highlighting the so called caste inequality, then why doesn't it have guts to show the other side as well? I am writing this because Hinduism as a whole has been criticised, which is totally unexceptable. The molesters are criminals, and the sufferers are the victims. Why is the identity of other disabled victims and their culprets not revealed if it is the case? The gods of Hinduism have always enlightened the society about the caste system. Even the saints are working in the same direction. And as it is said, half knowledge is more dangerous than having no knowledge at all. Hinduism describes the 4 Varnas, and not 4 castes. Re: [AI] Deaf, mute dalit widow molested by caste Hindu trio in Thoothukudi
Mr. Avichal Bhatnagar, well, RSS has no other way to mobalize people and claim them all as Hindus. This strong Brahminical hold in the disability sector has been the root-cause of the disabled mass not getting organized and politicized as in the west. Those you say to be serving the disabled decide what to read for a blind, what not to read, and even what to identify with. So, the service of RSS, if any, is only its part of its effort to mobalize people and keep them a part of Hinduism. This mobalization tactis in fact works better in gathering people into Kara Seva. coming to your second point, one must be against any form of violence against anyone. But it is ridiculous to say that the affense against an oppressed section is not more severe than the normal instance. Will you treat the killing of a strong man and that of a meek child equal? and, what do you really mean when you say that media must show the OTHER SIDE? slogans 30-32 say that the four Varna of people were born from Brahma according to their due place in the hierarchy. Please cite evidence for proving the Varnas were based on colour. Please refer any anthropological peace on the caste system. Its not mere labour division, but a structured hierarchy in which one's societal position is determined by birth. I think it is not proper to reply in this plotform for your comic assertion of saints working for caste abolition. Dear Him Prasad Does the Malayalam Wachak has the Klat variant of eSpeak available with it? Of all the eSpeak voice option, I've found it to be better than the rest. This is the conservative estimate about disability in Indian perspective, based on the World Disability Report 2011 (WHO World Bank). Thus, a substantial part of the population affected by physical, mental or sensory disabilities are debarred from full participation in political processes and public life. The normal tendency is to place them in institutions, asylums or shelter homes. The women and minorities with disabilities face multiple disadvantages, and are excluded from political processes because of their gender, ethnicity and disability. This despite the fact that the persons with disabilities are entitled to exercise civil, political, social, economic and cultural rights on equal footing with others under the international treaties as also domestic legislations. No society or nation can flourish unless all segments of the population, especially those who are marginalized, are mainstreamed in the nation building. The right to vote as also the broader right to participate in political processes form an integral part of our democratic system as also the global movement for empowering the persons with disabilities. By exercising the right to vote, such individuals can assert individual autonomy, independence and identity (including the freedom to make one's own choices, and the right to be recognized as persons before the law). There can be no denying the fact that the persons with disabilities have long faced impediments to full exercise of their voting rights, both through laws that expressly disenfranchise them and through other persistent barriers to voting. Through involvement in political activity, law and policy reforms, the persons with disabilities and their representative organizations can influence decision making processes in the spheres of health, rehabilitation, education, employment and access to services. In order that the rights of persons with disabilities may be further realized, the international human rights treaties like the UNCRPD make it mandatory for the ratifying States to incorporate such provisions into their national legislations. Thus, participation in political and public life is a human right as also a major step for enjoyment of other rights of citizens with disabilities (such as, the right to vote and the right to be elected). Of course, the issue of involvement of persons with disabilities in democratic processes should be visualized from that vantage point only. The Constitution of India as also the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) ratified by Government of India also seek to guarantee to the persons with disabilities for enjoyment of civil and political rights at par with others. Ironically, notwithstanding the fact that the Indian Constitution prohibits discrimination per se, it does not explicitly prohibit discrimination on grounds of disability. The fundamental right to life enshrined in the Indian Constitution provides for the guarantee of life with liberty and dignity to all persons-including the persons with disabilities. Full and effective participation/ inclusion in society are incorporated in the general principles enshrined in Articles 3 and 4 of the UNCRPD respectively; which impose an obligation on the States parties to consult and involve the persons with disabilities and their representative organizations in development and implementation of all such legislations and policies by way of implementing the provisions of the UNCRPD provisions, apart from their involvement in decision-making processes affecting their lives. Re: [AI] Deaf, mute dalit widow molested by caste Hindu trio in Thoothukudi
Avinash how Gujarat came in discussion? Here discussion was regarding disable and Hinduism. I can understand your extreme love for Gujarat and I thank you for that. But keep it for some Gujarat oriented debate If a disable person is good in singing then what is wrong if rss use him or her in that profession. Please understand all disable are not jnu scholars. Some of them are only good in singing so let them sing bhajans in stead of bagging. To give them job in jnu is not in the capacity of rss. These Varnas were based on skin colour. Later, they became based on occupation. How can Hinduism be criticised for the mistake of the society? On 12/3/13, muruganandan.k send2...@gmail.com wrote: Hello, do those defending Hinduism mean to say caste system does not give any power or authority for the dominant HINDU UPPER CASTES? continuing this discussion may lead to the revelation of some disturbing facts about the prevalence of caste hierarchy among the disabled. Try adopting innovative approaches to get across concepts. In class 4, the diagrams/graphs aren't that hard, so can easily be explained using non-technological solutions. Saksham and XRCVC are doing some great work in trying to make diagrams more accessible. You might want to check with them. Personally, my teachers and parents had me understand trivial diagrams by assembling commonly found things in different configurations. Also, try introducing him to tactile diagrams early-this is something that I regret not doing early. In the higher classes (class 9 and later), I would recommend using tactile diagrams, coupled with several softwares that are now available which render diagrams and graphs more accessible. Try Math Trax from NASA and Audio Graphing Calculator from ViewPlus Technologies. Apart from diagrams, softwares like VP Arithmetic and VP Algebra might also be useful in junior classes to help consolidate concepts. If he chooses to write Math on the computer, LaTeX with Math Type is an option to explore. Hope that helps, Best, On 11/29/13, raaju bidh...@gmail.com wrote: Agree with vedprakash sir. I believe without a diagram it will be very very tough to understand the things regarding geometry. Well though I don't draw such a horable diagram on my own, my teacher will draw for me and teach me as we have a vast paper of mathematics in our course. -Original Message- From: AccessIndia [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Vedprakash Sent: Friday, November 29, 2013 5:42 PM To: AccessIndia: a list for discussing accessibility and issuesconcerning thedisabled.
