2014-01-10 Thread Sakshi Agrawal
Thanks for your suggestions. I am currently using Abbyy fine reader with a
normal flat bed scanner which is great. But As i need to scan a lot of
books i am thinking to switch to a camera scanner.

I think the distributor of VisionAid in India is Sparsh in dehradun. i will
contact them and give my feedback to you.

Hi Sakshi,

It is surely a challenge to scan A3 size books with normal scanners.
The OCR gives quite inaccurate results.

You can either use camera scanners, or you have to unbind the book in
order to get good results if you are using a normal scanner.

ReadIt HD from Vision Aid is the only product as suggested by Mukesh
bhaiya which caters to A3 size as far as I know. However, check their
support quality (of the company and not of the distributor), because I
was not impressed when I interacted with Vision Aid in 2011.

If you don't plan to spend that much, then I suggest you to go for
camera scanners which cater to A4. Pearl is one of them which I
regularly use, and I must say that it gives quite good results with A3
size as well.

A point to look here is that what kind of material you need to scan.
In my case, it is mostly a text, with footnotes. Do you have pretty
colored book to scan with lots of images in it? Is the material
written in column format (news paper style)? Or it consists of Maths
and stuff?
In that case, I advise you take an in-depth test of the camera
scanners while making a choice.
All companies claim that the OCR works good in such cases, but you
really have to tweek the settings according to the book.

And if camera scanner is not you want, then which OCR you are using?
Consider buying a big scanner with good PPM (per page minute) speed.
But you will have to carefully deal with the books if you can't unbind
them for scanning at all.
Cannon's scanning quality I have always liked.

Greetings from NAB Assistive Technology Helpline!

In our series of sessions on the banking theme we conducted two sessions
namely "Banking Accessibility and Talking ATM" and "Empowering Young
Visually Impaired Bankers" on 9th November and 14th December, 2013
respectively.

On December 28, 2013 we conducted an interactive workshop for the visually
impaired candidates who have qualified IBPS CWE examination from 3:00 PM to
5:00PM. The workshop was conducted to empower the candidates who are called
for the interview scheduled in the month of January-2014.

Session Objective:

This empowering workshop intended to equip the participants with the
essential skills required for cracking the interview. In majority of cases
it is observed that interview panel does not consist of a member who is
aware about the assistive technology or the abilities of the visually
impaired person. So in this scenario it becomes imperative on part of the
interview candidate to demonstrate and inform the interview board about
strengths of a visually impaired person. The area that shall be concentrated
was probable questions based on past experiences, effective entry and exit
skills, body language and transmission of strong areas of the participant
during the interview.

Session Highlights:

The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Ashwini Kumar Agarwal and Mr.

Dipendra Manocha. Dr. Agarwal has rose to the rank of chief manager with
Punjab national bank and is associated with the bank's training system for a
decade. Presently he is posted at zonal training center as senior faculty.
Dr. Agarwal has also designed an informative and empowering document for
prospective visually impaired bankers.

Mr. Dipendra Manocha is working as the Developing countries coordinator and
Lead of Training and Tech Support with the DAISY Consortium. He is member of
The Executive Committee of the World Blind Union. He is managing trustee of
The Saksham Trust. He is the elected president of the NAB Delhi and DAISY
Forum of India.

The participants were also benefited by the valuable and key inputs on body
language and communications by Ms. Madhu and Ms. Monika who are working with
IBM as trainers.

NAB helpline is sharing full proceedings of this two hour session in

mp3 format. We have made available multiple audio files for easy listening.

Also a key resource in the form of take away material is made available

2. An audio of Body Language tips by Ms. Madhu.

3. An audio on tips for effective Communication during an interview by Ms.

4. An HTML document prepared "INFO ON BANKING AWARENESS AND IBPS COMMON

Hi Sakshi,

It is surely a challenge to scan A3 size books with normal scanners.

You can either use camera scanners, or you have to unbind the book in

ReadIt HD from Vision Aid is the only product as suggested by Mukesh

support quality (of the company and not of the distributor), because I
was not impressed when I interacted with Vision Aid in 2011.

Dear Amjad / Shyam
Firstly regarding, NVDA would also be available at the information kiosk
forindividual queries. At the convention, road map on future developments
on NVDA would be covered. There was a strong request to keep technology to
the minimum at the convention and to devote greater to social issues Hence
we designed it accordingly.

One of the spirit of organising the convention is to provide platform to
meet up with friends in person. To, converge the digital world with the
real world. Hence, post noon after lunch you have this exclusive space for
it.

Dear Amjad / Shyam
Firstly regarding, NVDA would also be available at the information kiosk
forindividual queries. At the convention, road map on future developments on
NVDA would be covered. There was a strong request to keep technology to the
minimum at the convention and to devote greater to social issues Hence we
designed it accordingly.

One of the spirit of organising the convention is to provide platform to
meet up with friends in person. To, converge the digital world with the
real world. Hence, post noon after lunch you have this exclusive space for
it.

Just 15 minutes devoted to the outblowing performer openSource NVDA?
So rediculous

Re: [AI] Roshni, the indoor navigation app.

2014-01-10 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi all,

I have met Dhruv some time back and have discussed the infrastructure
required by the solution. It still involves the installation of special
devices that emit signals that are caught by the mobile phone's Bluetooth
radio.

The concept is good and the implementation is impressive. However, my usual
question is who is going to pay and maintain the infrastructure? Electronic
components degrade, electricity is not of the best quality so there can be
issues with the devices etc.

You could of course treat these devices like smoke detectors and maintain
them the same way but as far as I know, we do not have any mandatory audits
to check such infrastructure like you are beginning to have with safety
infrastructure.

[AI] Special Parking For The Disabled At Terminal 2 In Mumbai

2014-01-10 Thread shahnaz

d section.
In what could be India’s largest multi-level car parking (MLCP) at an airport,
the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport has made a special section
dedicated for cars of differently-abled people.

Officials involved with the development of the project said there will be
assistance for the disabled in alighting from and getting into their cars at
the MLCP in addition to the availability of wheelchairs, trolleys and other
facilities. “All efforts have been taken to make their journey as stress-free
as possible,” said an insider.

The 10-storey structure, built over a periphery of 910m, has a parking capacity
of over 5,000 cars apart from space to accommodate 400 motorcycles. Three of
its floors are in the basement, airport officials revealed, adding that the
parking area boasts of adequate closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and
other security systems for the safety of passengers and others.

MLCP also has 96 toilets, including 20 for the physically -challenged.

According to travel industry experts and design experts, the
specially-designated areas for the disabled — to ensure a stress-free time for
them, in parking and elsewhere are the hallmark of most world-class airports,
including Frankfurt, Beijing and Heathrow among others.

The other salient features are the gardens and water fountains created inside
to relax and sooth fliers before departure and on arrival.

In comparison, Terminal 3 at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in
Delhi has five storeys and a capacity to accommodate 4,300 cars. Its parking
facility has some of the most advanced features available in the country, such
as an integrated electronic system to calculate how long a car was stationed in
the allotted parking space, electronic signages to point out vacant parking
slots and a space availability display system to indicate the number and
location of the vacant slot.

However, when asked whether it has a designated area for the disabled to park
their cars, an IGI spokesperson did not respond to the e-mail sent by dna.
