[AI] Fwd: Term of the Day: Takeover Artist

2014-01-11 Thread Aravind R
Definition of 'Takeover Artist'

An investor or company whose primary goal is to identify companies
that are attractive to buy and that can be turned around to make a
profit. A takeover artist will usually use a lot of debt (leverage) to
make the purchase, and restructure the company for resale or add the
company to an existing group of companies.
Investopedia Says
Investopedia explains 'Takeover Artist'

Takeover artists are also sometimes referred to as corporate raiders.
Frequently, the reason for a takeover is to remove entrenched
management that the corporate raider believes is incompetent. For
example, in the 1980s, Carl Icahn (a well-known takeover artist),
launched a takeover of Trans World Airlines and turned the company
from an unprofitable company to a profitable one in a few short years.
He took the company from a loss of $193 million in 1985 to a profit of
$106 million in 1987, and $250 million the next year. However, it was
short-lived, as Trans World Airlines posted a $298 million loss in
1989.

please register and deposit the registration fee of Rs.500/-. People from
Delhi, please register. The biggest participation is expected from Delhi.
Very few people from Delhi have registered so far.

now we are contemplating a smaller auditorium of 200 capacity.

Today is already 11th Jan. The convention dates are just a month away. From
an organisation point of view, it is time we had an idea of number of
people coming.

My request to all of you, please cooperate and start registering.

Re: [AI] Scanner

2014-01-11 Thread Sakshi Agrawal
Dear Amar Mukesh Sir,
i contacted Sparsh Products Mr. Abhinav was kind enough to demonstrate
the Readit Scholar HD to my brother on Skype. It is quite amazing as it was
able to scan complete A4 size book newspaper with high accuracy.

But for me to purchase it is financially not possible. Therefore i am
thinking to purchase Lex and i have used it in my university also.

As per your suggestion i went through Pearl camera also, but I found some
drawbacks as compared to Lex.
a) Price of pearl is approx Rs. 80,000 of Lex is approx 50,000
b) both the cameras have 5 MPX resolution
c) Openbook cannot save in pdf format, which is highly required by student
like me because the layout needs to remain the same
d) size of lex camera is quite small

Please correct me if I am wrong. Your views are highly appreciated.

ReadIt HD from Vision Aid is the only product as suggested by Mukesh
bhaiya which caters to A3 size as far as I know. However, check their
support quality (of the company and not of the distributor), because I
was not impressed when I interacted with Vision Aid in 2011.

If you don't plan to spend that much, then I suggest you to go for
camera scanners which cater to A4. Pearl is one of them which I
regularly use, and I must say that it gives quite good results with A3
 size as well.

A point to look here is that what kind of material you need to scan.
In my case, it is mostly a text, with footnotes. Do you have pretty
colored book to scan with lots of images in it? Is the material
written in column format (news paper style)? Or it consists of Maths
 and stuff?
In that case, I advise you take an in-depth test of the camera
 scanners while making a choice.
All companies claim that the OCR works good in such cases, but you
really have to tweek the settings according to the book.

And if camera scanner is not you want, then which OCR you are using?
Consider buying a big scanner with good PPM (per page minute) speed.
But you will have to carefully deal with the books if you can't unbind
 them for scanning at all.
Cannon's scanning quality I have always liked.

I am a person with disability. After years of hard work, I am now an

Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha for enactment.

It will take them just one day to change the lives of millions of
people. The Ministers need to know that thousands of people across

there might be advantages for using lex camera over pearl but
personally i am happy with the performance of pearl camera. secondly,
in my view, when thing comes to assistive technology, if i am spending
additionallly on such devices, to me, after sales support and brand
matters lot. as pearl is manufactured by freedom scientific company
having vast experience in this field as compared to vision aid
technologies, i can be best assured with its support in case of any
assistance. no doubt, Mr. Abhinav from sparsh product is always
available for any queries and has good amount of supportive
stratigies, but i don't know whom to approach besides him as i found
this to be one man show. i may be wrong in my findings.

[AI] Accessibility With 3d Printing

2014-01-11 Thread Naushad Charivilayil
You’ve heard of 3D printing from newscasters and journalists, astonished
at what they’ve witnessed. A machine reminiscent of the Star Trek
Replicator, something magical that can create objects out of thin air.
It can “print” in plastic, metal, nylon, and over a hundred other
materials. It can be used for making nonsensical little models like the
over-printed Yoda, yet it can also print manufacturing prototypes, end
user products, quasi-legal guns, aircraft engine parts and even human
organs using a person’s own cells.

To perform a print, the machine reads the design from an stl file and
lays down successive layers of liquid, powder, paper or sheet material
to build the model from a series of cross sections. These layers, which
correspond to the virtual cross sections from the CAD model, are joined
or automatically fused to create the final shape. The primary advantage
of this technique is its ability to create almost any shape or geometric

Re: [AI] Scanner

2014-01-11 Thread Amar Jain
Dear Sakshi,

Appreciate your concerns. Abhinav is no doubt an excellent person who
can help you whenever you need support. Vision Aid may be improving
day by day. I am quite satisfied with Abhinav personally.
In fact I am also looking to talk to him when I visit Techshare Exhibition.

Talk about few things with Abhinav or Vision Aid:
1. What is their upgrade policy?
Normally it should be 2 versions after purchase.

2. What is the warranty of the hardware?
Should be around 2 years or so.
I was required to replace my hardware in 2 years, as I had to scan
around 6000 or more pages in every 6 months or sometimes even before
that. (giving you rough estimate, could be little more than that.).

3. In case you need to get your hardware repaired, approximately how
much time it will take for you to receive the repaired / rplaced unit?
2-3 weeks should be good enough.

This should not be a major concern, but within what span they release
the software updates? Openbook is quite slow in that sense.

Another point to consider is that whether the camera scanner works
with other softwares like Fine Reader or not? Pearl, for example
doesn't work with any other software. This is a drawback, as you can't
use the quality of other softwares like Fine Reader. So FS in that
sense tries to keep its monopoly.
As far as I know, Vision Aid's cameras work with other softwares as well.

Another problem of Openbook besides not being able to save in PDF is
that it doesn't allow one to save in JPG more than one page.
You may have read a recent query in this regard. I generally use exact
view of Openbook, which retains the kind of layout you may want to
have.

Are you talking about LexCam? It was being discontinued.
Please visit: www.visionaid.com.

If you have used the Vision Aid's cameras, then I don't want to say
you anything contradictory, as you know what kind of material you need
to scan.

I agree with all the points you have raised
between Pearl and Vision Aid's devices.

But if your material is too challenging to scan in general, then
please take proper demo from all distributors before making a choice.
I mean to say try it out with your own material.
In case of Pearl, I would be happy to help you with a sample.

Regards,
--
