[AI] The trouble blind people have with £1 coins
Does anybody know What RBI and Finance Ministry are doing to make Indian Notes identifiable by blind? Someone should take it up with RBI and finance Ministry and if need arises, Courts... http://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-magazine-monitor-26637515 19 March 2014 Last updated at 11:44 A new 12-sided British pound coin is to replace the round one after 30 years. With very different edges to other coins, it'll make it easier to identify if you're blind, writes Ouch's Damon Rose. I must be one of the most trusting souls in the UK. When I buy a pint, a packet of mints or anything really, I am often to be seen holding up a note and asking the seller: Is this a fiver or a tenner? Being blind it's hard to distinguish which note is which. They're a little different in size but if you really want to know what paper money you're holding, blind people will either use a keyring note measuring gauge or a little electronic device that vibrates once if it's a £5, twice if it's a £10, three times if it's £20 and so on. Phone apps also exist. But it's a faff. Coins are much easier to distinguish by touch because, unlike notes, they don't bend or get soggy with age. Fifty pence pieces are a particularly feelable delight, closely followed by 20 pence pieces which can feel a bit like the other round coins in your pocket because you always find yourself sorting money at speed at point of purchase. Presently, the big, chunky £2 pound coins are the most distinguishable. The milling on the edge of a £1 coin for some reason can get rubbed away so you have to bear this in mind. I've found myself trying to buy a coffee with a couple of two pence pieces and being told quizzically: The coffee is two pounds, not 4p, by a barista who thought I was trying to con him. But a unique, hefty 12-sided coin is an accessibility masterstroke - it won't be mistaken for either a 50 or 20 pence piece. The Royal Mint consults with interested parties such as Age Concern and the RNIB when designing new currency. I'm hoping the new plastic notes, due out in 2016, are either robust enough to judge without a gauge or will have Braille. Current notes aren't suitable as the dots get squashed. -- Avinash Shahi M.Phil Research Scholar Centre for The Study of Law and Governance Jawaharlal Nehru University New Delhi India Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Re: [AI] The trouble blind people have with £1 coins
Hi RBI has assured they will be engaging us everytime there is a change of design of currency notes. They have been clearly told not to make any change in dimention of the existing notes. I have checked that in the new plastic notes which is going to be a pilot, The design is not changed and only the material will be changed. With respect to coins, it falls in the jurisdiction of MOF and for that we may need to use court intervention to bring in standardisation. Re: [AI] CPI(M) Manifesto -- persons with disabilities
Great work CPM!Manifesto is a formal document of any political party. At least we can ask questions if CPI(M) comes to power under the umbrella of third front. Other politicals parties consider disabled people and their concerns untouchables... Let us wait and hear what Congress comes up along with BJP for disabled in their manifestos. Providing a universally valid Identity Card for the disabled that would be valid across states and departments. - Clearing backlog in vacancies in all government departments in a time bound manner. - Making all buildings, public places, transport, information and other avenues fully accessible and barrier free for people with disabilities; provision of sign language interpreters; making TV accessible for the deaf and hard of hearing through same language captioning - Enhancing the pension to at least Rs. 4000/- for the disabled - Free provision of aids and appliances - Making education at all levels inclusive - Making Health facilities accessible and free for persons with disabilities. - Extending the assistance under the MPLADS fund to other assistive devices and facilities for the disabled and not restricting it only to the purchase of tricycles, wheelchairs and artificial limbs for the disabled. To put it plainly i am a starter in android and know very little about android accessibility A google search on this term gives me number of postings but that is just not enough to have some practical experience. Please be informed that I hold a samsung grand 2 phone with android 4.2 and know that talk back is an inbuilt accessibility tool in android my initial impressions of it is very little help but i have had feedback from many friends i know that a totally visually impaired person is able to independently use the phone. The help i am looking for from you members who are experienced enough using the android OS as to how can i make myself good at using this phone i know it may not be 100 percent accessible however if it could support features like phone navigation, using email, and accessing the internet it should serve my purpose. I am looking for help in bringing me to spead to this by suggesting resources available on the internet or outside and some volunteers who could coach me in person if in bangalore or on skype or other web based means. Hi We have dedicated list for serving mobile related queries. Registration info is in the footer of every mail. Regards Harish Kotian -Original Message- From: AccessIndia [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Fayaz Pasha Sent: 21 March 2014 09:00 To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Subject: [AI] Android accessibility Dear all, First of all let me say that I am not new to the list I had been on this list for a while and had been off the list for a few years now and i am back looking to contribute to healthy ideas on this list. Some of the members will identify me for my earlier association with this group and I also know some of you personally. Now lets come to the topic that i am seeking help on. Like the many of the people now i have decided to take a plunj in the world of smart phones however it is easier said then done as we do not enjoy the mastery over them as we had on the treditional simbian operating system it is hear ware i seek your help. Please also suggest if there is any mailing list on the lines of AI which is dedicated to android accessibility. Look forward to some help from you all. Re: [AI] Regarding recovering files from a corrupt copy of windows.
These are the steps to install windows independently. 1. Burn your Win PE iso file to a cd or dvd. Note : iso burner will be simple and accessible. 2. Insert your cd/dvd disk into your cd/dvd drive and reboot the system. 3. Make cd/dvd rome as your first boot device, by using system bios or quick boot menu, and then save the setting and reboot the system. 4. Waite for one or two minute to boot win PE from your cd/dvd. 5. If your sound card is supported,NVDA will start automatically. 6. After loading Win PE, you can remove your cd/dvd from the drive, and you can insert your windows installation disk. 7. Start windows setup from your windows installation disk. Please note, Win PE is a scale down and live cd of windows operating system to repair and install windows, or recover files from corrupted windows. Your sound card may not be supported because Win PE may not have necessary drivers included for your sound card. If you are a service technician, the best choice will be to purchase a generic USB sound card, and slipstream necessary drivers for your generic sound card into your Win PE image using windows aik. To make a customized Win PE with NVDA included, please contact me to my personal email. email:chittardigi...@gmail.com On 3/20/2014 12:04 PM, Amiyo Biswas wrote: Would you please be more specific on how to use this iso file , install windows 7 without sighted asistance?
