[AI] a webcast transcript:assistive technology assessment by ike tresley-perkins school for the blind
Webcast Transcript: CHAPTER 1 -- Introduction PRESLEY: I think the first technology I got introduced to was in the sixth grade. I had a teacher that taught me typing. And that was a major, major thing because I was the kid who was always getting his papers handed back saying, I can't read this, write it again, you know? Assistive Technology Assessment with Ike Presley. So when I could start typing, it was a big deal. I ended up going to Florida State and that was back then before the ADA and everything, they encouraged all students who had a vision problem to go to that one university because there were a lot of services available there. So I met a lot of other students who were blind or visually impaired during that time period. And I did not do my undergraduate work in this field, but I, as a client of the blind services in Florida, I was offered a work experience program over in Panama City. So I learned a lot more then, actually working with people who were blind, and I met the teacher of the visually impaired for that school system who was running an adult basic ed class for people who are blind and visually impaired. And so we became real good friends and she was going back to grad school, and I said, Well I'll see what's available, you know. So I went into the program and it was interesting that, you know, I had given some thought to it but I wasn't, like, you know, super dedicated. It wasn't, like, my life goal to do that, but what happened is, as I started going to the classes, the professors would ask you questions. Well, okay, you've got this blind student and you need to teach him about, you know, X, Y, Z. How would you do it? You know, and people would say, Well, you could do this or this, and the teacher would say, But remember, they're blind, they can't see it. And the students would go, Oh, yeah, oh, yeah, yeah. So, you know, me being the shy person that I am, you know, I'd say, Oh, well, you could do so and so, and so and so, and so and so. And the other students would go, Wow. I never thought about it like that. I'm going, Wait a minute. This is just what my brother and I did all of our lives to survive. So it finally dawned on me that this thing that for so many years of my life I had considered a deficit, I could now turn into an asset. CHAPTER 2 -- Understanding Assistive Technology Options PRESLEY: I got very interested in the whole idea of assessment because I would go to a school and talk to a teacher and say, Well, are you using any technology? And they'd say, Well, no, but we have some stuff in a closet. And they would go and open the closet and here might be $10,000, $15,000, $20,000 worth of equipment that had been bought over the years, but it wasn't the right tool for the job. You know that old saying, you know? It wasn't the right match. Mama or an administrator, they were somewhere and they saw this neat new thing and they said, Well, this is what we've got to get for our students who are blind. Well, it wasn't the right match. They didn't realize it. It was just, they thought it would work, you know? And so they got it and then maybe somebody tried it, but it just didn't meet the needs of the student. I decided, okay, so now we've got to come up with a way, then, to figure out what. We've got all these technology tools over here. We've got people who have needs. How can we match the tool? How can we come up with the right tool for the job? So the assessment process -- the first part --is to figure out, well, what are the tasks that the individual has difficulty accomplishing? So I also was realizing that people needed a way to get a better handle on what was out there. And one of my strong biases, before you can determine what someone's AT needs are and what technologies might meet those needs, you need to have a good general overview, knowledge, of what's available. One of the big things is to know what technology's out there, so as a way to help people organize that large bank or body of information, I basically have said, well, you can divide them into that there are tools for accessing printed information, you know? You sighted people, you love that black stuff on the white background, you know. Us guys, we aren't so hip on it, you know, okay? We like the information, but it's a hard way to get to it, right? So that's a big deal. And obviously, if you're totally blind, that black stuff on the white doesn't do you any good, right? No matter how big we make it. So that's one big category. An open binder beneath a text magnifying device. NARRATOR: In a photograph, we see an open binder beneath a text magnifying device. A camera in the device projects the printed page onto a monitor and we can see the enlarged type on the screen. PRESLEY: The second one is that the technology provides us with tools for accessing electronic information. So much of what we have today that maybe formally was in print is now only available electronic. Plus, we have tons of new information

Dear All, Hope you are doing good! Well, after receiving a good response to my previous posting, I have been started using JAWS with a Dongle. Now it made me write again, on my Windows XP machine where I use JAWS13, JAWS is making a noise something like repeating the option again after reading the things which I cannot tolerate in any way. Despite quitting, uninstalling and reinstalling JAWS, the problem is still persisting. My fellow members are requested to point out the real reason and solution for this issue. I hope it would be answered at the earliest as always. Note: Though it is licensed up to 15, I wanted to explore with JAWS13 for number of reasons. Re: [AI] Admission help
let me share my experience with you, for best college with hostel facility Hi, I am Ramanjaneyulu. I completed my schooling in G.R.S.V.H. School which is based out in Hindupur (Anantapur DT) with 67 aggregate percentage. I studied up to 10th class in Reasonable Language, Telugu medium. I was not aware of English language. But my desire was to join in English medium college for higher studies. I was searching for special and better English medium colleges for visually challenged persons. here I came to know about this special college. Let me share with you. The college Netravidyalaya is special and unique college only one in the history of world, which facilitates Latest technology of Education, good Hostel accommodations with free of cost for the visually challenged persons. The college offers both Intermediate and Degree courses respectively Commerce, Economics and Civics (C.E.C.), History Economics and Civics (H.E.C.), B.of Commerce and Computers and B.of Arts with laptops. The main Motto of the college is to make the visually challenged persons independent. Their Innovative idea is those students should not be depended on other persons (Scribes) for their exams, they should give their exams by their own on laptops. They use laptops by using Special Screen reader software, which is called as JAWS (Job Access With Speech) designed by freedom scientific corporation. The College Netravidyalaya Junior college is foundation for me to dig my inner skills which is run by Chinna jeeyar swamiji.. This is the base for me to stand at this position. There I completed my 12th class with Commerce Economics Civics (C.E.C.) group by securing 75.6%. I felt very happy to secure this much of results, because up to 10th class I depended some other persons to give my exams, they are called scribes. They used to read out the question paper, we used to answer orally again they used write what ever we tell. The scribe persons are 8th standard children. So they don't know some symbols in Math's and don't know how to write. So they was a problem. Here it is totally different because in our college laptop is given to the each individual student as a guiding stick to improve their skills. So I could write my exams by my own. In the same institution only I completed successfully graduation with B.Com (Computers) with 81% affiliated to the Osmonia University. After completion of my graduation I came to SOA IT Solutions Pvt Ltd for internship. Here I learned many things. I am new to the software platform. I got PeopleSoft URL and able to access with our Screen reader software. It helps us in navigation of PeopleSoft application. After exploring some PPTs and Online books about PeopleSoft I acquainted knowledge in PeopleSoft. I learned Core HRMS, Work force administration, adding a person, correlating with org relations, assigning multiple assignments etc. Now I am able to add a person data into PeopleSoft application. In the current training I had two assignments. I completed one assignment successfully because it was very easy. 2nd one is quite different and completed successfully by learning new things. Really swethansu sir is helping us greatly with patients. There are some concepts in which I need to improve my skills and knowledge. After taking some sessions, I am more confident in moving my career into IT Sector. I am interested to continue my professional career in software sector. I want to acquire in-depth knowledge in PeopleSoft it's a interesting. I have always been a little embarrassed about by my technical skills After taking this PeopleSoft Sessions I feel much more confident in my technical aspects, and I believe that my academicals, professional and even personal life have benefited greatly from this newly found skill. Even though I have been reading all my life, I now have better appreciation for the effort and work. Although I currently work in the IT field, I would like to move into a more administrative position, and I feel I am much better prepared because of the skills I have learned here. As a final note this Training has greatly benefited me academically, professionally, and personally. Re: [AI] C - C++ IDE for windows7 64 bit
hello friend, dev c++ is quite accesible. you can type the codes in notepad and save with .c /cpp extension. then open with dev c++,compile and run. if there is any errors jaws will read the first one from the top. after clearing it again compile then it will read the next error. if there is no errors a command prompt will be opened to show your output. it is also accesible. Re: [AI] Accessible Linux
Hi. I am researching on the same topic. On the whole Linux is not very accessible or it doesn't have as advanced screen readers. In terms of accessibility, Windows is better. However to access the power of Linux, there are two distributions specially designed for the visually impaired/disabled; namely Vinux and Sonar. I am currently trying to learn both the distributions and decide which one is better Also, have a look at Zipspeak, a talking mini-distribution. Please do share with me if you make any progress in learning Linux or discovering something new and interesting. [AI] DVD writer in Windows7
Dear Friends, I have recently switched to Windows7 from XP after using it for nine long years. In Windows XP, we could write a CD by copying a file or a folder, pasting it to the CD Drive and clicking the option Write these files to CD. Is this facility extended to DVD writing in Windows7? Moreover, I have found an application called Windows DVD maker in All program submenu. How can we use it? Please provide step-byy-step instructions. Thanks in anticipation. yes, you can write CDs and DVDs as you were doing in xp. -Original Message- From: Ashik Sent: Thursday, May 01, 2014 8:45 AM To: black-operati...@googlegroups.com Cc: KeyBoard Users ; accessindia@accessindia.org.in Subject: [AI] DVD writer in Windows7 Dear Friends, I have recently switched to Windows7 from XP after using it for nine long years. Has anyone installed Vinux or Sonar successfullly without sighted assistance? I am considering going for a hackintosh instead of linux, i should be able to do everything i want to do on linux on a mac as well.
