[AI] Visually-challenged paraglider flies solo
Amruta Byatnal Divyanshu Ganatra takes off on his solo flight.— Photo: Special Arrangement I did it because of my love for the sport, says Divyanshu Ganatra On Wednesday afternoon, at Kamshet near Pune, a 36-year-old undertook his first solo paragliding flight. As soon as he landed, his trainers ran out and huddled around him. Amid cheers, one said, “We did it. You made history.” Divyanshu Ganatra had just become the only visually-challenged Indian paraglider to have flown solo. “It was a spiritual high,” Mr. Ganatra told The Hindu before adding modestly: “I did it like everyone else does.” A clinical psychologist who lost his sight due to glaucoma at the age of 19, Mr. Ganatra runs a counselling and corporate training organisation called ‘Yellow Brick Road’. The flight was made possible by Templepilots, a paragliding club run by Avi Malik and his wife Anita Deshpande. According to Mr. Malik, there are no official records of visually-challenged people having undertaken solo flights. A Master Instructor at the Association of Paragliding Pilots and Instructors, he stated that no other Indian had attempted this before. “There are probably one or two worldwide who have attempted this successfully,” he said. A hearing-impaired Belgian performed the same feat under his guidance last year. For Mr. Ganatra, however, it wasn’t about the achievement or about proving a point to anyone. “I did it because of my love for the sport,” he said. For Mr. Malik and his wife, taking up his request was an “instinctive decision.” “The heart said yes first, the mind worked on it later,” Mr. Malik said. What was most important was working together and having faith in each other. “I trusted them with my life. That is the only way I could have done this,” Mr. Ganatra said. Ms. Deshpande agreed. “It was about trust, and not about [never] flying anymore.” The experience helped Mr. Malik stretch his own boundaries as a teacher as he sought to find new ways and means to guide Mr. Ganatra. “One way was using simulation, and working on other senses: touching, feeling and listening,” he said. To explain the concepts of aerodynamics, Mr. Malik asked Mr. Ganatra to use his hands to understand how the glider works. In a ‘tandem’ flight with an instructor, he learnt what the experience could be like. An initial idea of using bells was discarded as Mr. Malik thought that audio signals broadcast through a radio would do the job. A quick and instinctive learner, Mr. Ganatra was ready for his flight after three days of on-ground training. “The experience was an overwhelming mix of joy, fear and excitement. When you are in the sky, you taste freedom,” he said. “ The experience was an overwhelming mix of joy, fear and excitement. [AI] Fwd: [TTZ] Will we be saying, bye bye to Braille!
Researchers from MIT Media Labs are developing a wearable device that can read out printed text using a synthesized voice, helping the sight-impaired read books without the use of Braille. Called the FingerReader, the ring-like device has a mounted camera for scanning text. Audio feedback comes in the form of a robot voice that sounds like it has a speech impediment. However, according to the research team's website, the device is just a research prototype at this point, so audio feedback would be fixed if and when it becomes available to the mass market. To help the sight-impaired read text more efficiently, the device has cues or haptic feedback to help blind readers maintain a straight scanning motion with their finger. It gives out a vibration signal when their finger veers away from the line of text, and does the same thing when they've reached the end and the start of every line of text. The device can't read the fine print in your contracts, but it can detect 12-point printed text, which is ubiquitous enough when it comes to printed text. In an interview with TechCrunch, Roy Shilkrot, one of the researchers for the project, hopes that the device will help more than the visually impared. He said that the device is for people with disability, ability, and superability and hinted that it could be used to translate languages. http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/fingerreader-h... The team behind the FingerReader is said to be looking into miniaturization and features such as tethering to a PC or smartphone. If you want to see the device in action, check out the demo video below. http://vimeo.com/86912300#at=31 -- with best regards, Bhavesh. Re: [AI] IT Help Desk
Hi Narendra, What is exactly IT help desk you are looking for? I assume you meant IT help desk. It varies from organization to organization. in Big organisations like IBM/Oracle Software engineers mostly concentrate on actual software development like Oracle/ Solaris what ever it may be. They don't concentrate on Infrastructure required for software development like work stations or servers etc etc. if Software engineers face any issues related to their work stations sw staff need to approach help desk people. Some times they I mean help desk ppl will help to you to solve your problem otherwise you need to go for helpdesk engineer or they call them as service desk personell. I hope this help if not please call me on my mob. Best regards. Re: [AI] Research on Matrimonial Thoughts of Visually Impaired Persons
Only residents of Mumbai? I wonder how thoughts of people in other places differ from those in Mumbai. Moreover, I guess even the sample wouldn't be representative enough to form any generalised opinions on the subject. May be the project she has undertaken would have had Mumbai in the title and hence the specific location. Considering the lack of studies on a subject as important as this, I think studies should be undertaken on a more larger scale so that the sample would be large and representative enough to draw meaningful conclusions. @ vamshi jee. hi, while i agree that large scail research is necessary for brodder, more robust findings, the rule of thumb for any researcher is to take things 1 step at a time. even if u want to find out anything at its macro level, it is always wiser to conduct the research in its smaller chunk form, so that u can tweak the research along the way. otherwise there become too many variables to control, which interfear and tamper with the origional research question. the other thing is, that i have learnd this from personal experience, that there r indeed cultural differences even between people living in the same country, but different cities. i'm a resident of Mumbai, and have now moved to hyderabad for studying. and believe me, i too was very surprised with how different we r culturally from each other. it is sad, but true, that some of the metropoliton cities do indeed display a more open mind set from certain smaller states. i'm not saying this in a derogatory manner, and neither am i very proud about it. i'm just saying that i learned this the hard way from personal experience with a lot of fellow students from other cities. all this is to just tell u that the research method followed here, is a wise way of going about it. of course if it is pursued in its full capacity later on, and conducted in all cities, then it will give us the full comprehensive picture we desire. smile. [AI] Where patients should call the shots: my latest blog
Where patients should call the shots Let me put this disclaimer first: doctors out there reading this post, please understand that the idea that I am about to explore is not some kind of patient revolt or Bolshevik-style insurrection on our health system. Let me also admit that at the ground level, you all are doing an excellent service treating patients in general and ophthalmic patients in particular. But I'm sure most of you would agree that the RD system concerning health in this country is such a non-starter that there needs to be something done about it. We don't expect a medical boycott or a doctors' strike on lack of RD opportunity in India, because most of you find research work elsewhere in the globe. It only leaves the patients to handle the situation for ourselves. Read more at: http://grapplingwithrp.wordpress.com/2014/05/04/where-patients-should-call-the-shots/ -- L. Subramani, Snr. Hi, Few attempts are going on for Kannada OCR, important being a kannada and Tamil print to braille tool from IISC Bangalore. I visited there sometimes back, and testing their OCR and giving feedback. Though the accuracy is not so great, usable with good printed text. They are still working on this. If u want more details, u can contact me off the list. I have scanned couple of books using that. My father is taking care of editing for me. A professor in Mysore also working for Kannada OCR. Re: [AI] i need train root to srirangam
Hello Some trains like the Rock Fort Express and other few trains stop at Srirangam as well. No need to get down at Thiruchirapally and come back. The only problem is that we have to get down at Chennai central station and then go to Chennai Egmore to board the further south bound trains to Srirangam. Re: [AI] Visually-challenged paraglider flies solo By Amruta Byatnal
Brilliant, Congrats to Mr. Ganatra and the Templepiolt team. I think Mr. Ganatra is there on this lit. Sir, do share more details. I've been looking for paragliding abroad. Didn't know there are well-equipped and skilled instructors like Mr. Malik so close to my city itself. Kudos for such an achievement once again. On 5/4/14, avinash shahi shahi88avin...@gmail.com wrote: Divyanshu Ganatra takes off on his solo flight.-- Photo: Special Arrangement http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/visuallychallenged-paraglider-flies-solo/article5974364.ece I did it because of my love for the sport, says Divyanshu Ganatra On Wednesday afternoon, at Kamshet near Pune, a 36-year-old undertook his first solo paragliding flight. As soon as he landed, his trainers ran out and huddled around him. Amid cheers, one said, We did it. You made history. Divyanshu Ganatra had just become the only visually-challenged Indian paraglider to have flown solo. It was a spiritual high, Mr. Ganatra told The Hindu before adding modestly: I did it like everyone else does. A clinical psychologist who lost his sight due to glaucoma at the age of 19, Mr. Ganatra runs a counselling and corporate training organisation called 'Yellow Brick Road'. There are probably one or two worldwide who have attempted this successfully, he said. A hearing-impaired Belgian performed the same feat under his guidance last year. For Mr. Ganatra, however, it wasn't about the achievement or about proving a point to anyone. I did it because of my love for the sport, he said. For Mr. Malik and his wife, taking up his request was an instinctive decision. The heart said yes first, the mind worked on it later, Mr. Malik said. What was most important was working together and having faith in each other. I trusted them with my life. That is the only way I could have done this, Mr. Ganatra said. Ms. Deshpande agreed. It was about trust, and not about [never] flying anymore. The experience helped Mr. Malik stretch his own boundaries as a teacher as he sought to find new ways and means to guide Mr. Ganatra. One way was using simulation, and working on other senses: touching, feeling and listening, he said. To explain the concepts of aerodynamics, Mr. Malik asked Mr. Ganatra to use his hands to understand how the glider works. In a 'tandem' flight with an instructor, he learnt what the experience could be like. An initial idea of using bells was discarded as Mr. Malik thought that audio signals broadcast through a radio would do the job. A quick and instinctive learner, Mr. Ganatra was ready for his flight after three days of on-ground training. The experience was an overwhelming mix of joy, fear and excitement. When you are in the sky, you taste freedom, he said. The experience was an overwhelming mix of joy, fear and excitement.
