Re: [AI] Fw: Make all new ATMs talking machines from July: RBI to banks
Hi Hardik, Nothing related to your question. But I would only advise to all those who are facing some or the other problem with banks, then please take the step of reaching out to Customner Cares, senior management like Chairman etc. Do reach out to Accessindians if your problems are not getting solved despite taking steps, may be we can help you in some or the other way. While at the one hand NGOs or individuals do their hard work to convince the authorities about the issues faced, but at the other hand it is equally important to have the user demands and their voices reaching to the authorities for any NGO or individual to ask for solutions by way of circulars etc. And please, I know the issue like that of Chequebook etc is still unsolved. But I am right now only talking about the very basic of banking like an account with debit card and internet banking which the current circulars are capable enough to solve. Thanks, -- Amar Jain. [AI] Need help regarding Signatures
Hello friends These days I am facing a big problem regarding my signatures. I am often required to sign at different places, and mostly my signatures don't match. This creates problems, especially while signing on cheques. Is there any permanent and lasting solution for this problem? Is it proper and OK to use thumb impression on cheques? And is it possible in any way to somehow manage my signatures, so they always match? Please help me, as it is becoming very problematic now. Thanks and regards. [AI] New York Times: In Chinese Schools, Disabled Get Shortchanged-By LARA FARRAR
BEIJING - May 19 2014 Mike, 13, lives on the outskirts of Beijing. He is gifted: He plays the piano by ear and, most afternoons, practices singing Italian opera. Yet Mike, whose family has requested that his Chinese name not be used, may never be able to go to university, or even high school, because he is almost completely blind. Now in junior high, he has no special assistance in class and has to navigate the curriculum by himself. It takes him hours to take exams, trying to see the tests with what little vision he has in one eye. Because of his handicap, he receives no grades. With no grades, he is practically shut out from higher education. We are still trying to find a way for him, said Mike's mother, who requested anonymity to avoid further discrimination against her son. Maybe he can go abroad or study art, but it seems there is no way for him to have access to higher education in China. China has approximately 85 million people with disabilities, according to the United Nations. Experts in the field, including professors of special education, human-rights officials and lawyers representing the disabled, say that the Chinese government, despite some progress, is not doing enough to ensure that people with disabilities have equitable access to higher education -- or really any education at all. At the end of 2012, more than 90,000 disabled children had no access to schooling, according to the China Disabled Persons' Federation, a quasi- government organization. Between 2008 and 2012, only 35,000 disabled people were enrolled in mainstream higher-education institutions, the organization said. To put that in context, nearly seven million people graduated from college in China in 2013 alone. Higher-education discrimination is the tip of the iceberg, said Maya Wang, a Hong Kong-based researcher with Human Rights Watch. A lot of students with disabilities face discrimination at the lower levels. A 2013 Human Rights Watch report noted that in 2008 the Chinese government ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities, which calls for inclusive education at all levels. Still, the report said, the central government in Beijing has no clear and consistent strategy to achieve that goal. Instead, the government has poured billions of dollars into developing a separate special-education system, from primary-school level to college, for the disabled. These special schools, however, sometimes lack trained teachers, are far from the homes of students, and prevent students from ever crossing back into mainstream education, Human Rights Watch said. The two systems exist in parallel and rarely interact, the report said. Within the special system, students who are blind or deaf are often shunted into vocational schools or colleges that offer training in music, painting, or massage therapy -- jobs deemed appropriate for the disabled. These options are based stereotypically on what people with disabilities might be good at doing, said Ms. Wang, of Human Rights Watch. There are very limited choices, and if they do want to try mainstream education, they face very high barriers. Hi This is more a cultural issue and hence may we close this thread. I do agree it has often to do with our visual impairment that people put us on a distinct, maybe a higher pedestal. The issue made me nostalgic when I entreated, urged, and quarreled with my writer in tenth to call me TUM, as I called her, instead of AAP. We were same age and she called all her friends as Tum or TOO, but not me... She wanted to, attempted, rehearsed at home, but come what may, could not bring herself to call me Tum. Finally, I gave her ultimatum while dictating board exam of tenth class, on my birthday, by stopping me in between and refusing to proceed until she corrected herself. I was ready to put my board exam in jeopardy!! The impasse continued for about half an hour before she obliquely relented. So, I too think the best way is to try to be one of them and reminding them that visual impairment does not make us utterly distinct and worthy of respect by default... -Original Message- From: accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Vamshi. Some people take up education a little late, and hence age gap between classmates. Ignore this question if it isn't the case with you. Second, if you like to be addressed as thu instead of aap, the best thing is to tell them openly that you don't like to be addressed as aap. I'll give you my own example. I worked as a lecturer for about 6 years before joining the bank. When I introduced myself as a lecturer, doing PhD, completed a few master degrees, etc., everyone in the bank started addressing me as sir. I felt they were not close with me. So, I told each one of them openly that I like to be addressed by my first name. Then even my peers, who are at least 5 years younger than me, started addressing me by my name. Even now whenever there is a new employee in the branch and starts putting extensions like je after my name, I tell them my wish. If one starts doing this, others also start doing the same. Where ever you go, whatever you do, remember to communicate openly. Never expect others to know you without you telling them what you are. So, when a girl addresses you as aap, tell her that she can call you thu if she really feels you are her friend. Tell this by addressing her as thu. See the change! On 3/5/12, Mohit Shah Shah mohit.shah...@gmail.com wrote: Hello folks, As usual, I have a really weird and unique question. I have often observed that all my classmates, and even some of my friends, address me as 'aap' instead of 'tu', which is how they address each other. I somehow feel that this has something to do with my visual impairment. Perhaps, my classmates find it hard to be as open with me as they are with others, so they try to talk to me in a respectful manner in order to ensure that I don't get offended in any way. And I've observed that this is more applicable in the case of my female classmates. So, what can I do to make them feel at ease and treat me in a normal manner? Re: [AI] Disability, Intersectionality and Deprivation: An Excluded Agenda
Dear All I'm in urgent need of two or three Journal articles which discuss disability and inter-sectionality in matters of employment in urban India. If any of you could help me in this regard, please. Thank you. On 8/8/13, avinash shahi shahi88avin...@gmail.com wrote: By G.C. Pal Indian Institute of Dalit Studies Abstract Block quote start Social perspective on disability affirms that a large number of persons with disabilities struggle to lead a normal life because of stereotypical attitudes, social stigma, discrimination and neglect. Various socio-cultural conditions also interact with different types of disability in a complex manner to make the overall life qualitatively different. The critical issue is that the interface of disability with other social identities is more likely to compound problem, which by and large is overlooked. With the recognition that understanding the intersections of multiple forms of dis-crimination has a powerful human rights dimension and greater social significance for inclusion, this article is an attempt to examine the interface of disability and caste on living conditions of persons with disabilities. Drawing on data primarily from the latest National Sample Survey, the article throws light on the circumstances of the persons with disabilities across social groups, with a special focus on Dalits (scheduled castes) with disabilities. It is revealed that despite several special interventions for the social integration of dalits and persons with disabilities, dalits with disabilities are doubly disadvantaged. The article argues for the preferential support services and socio-psychological interventions for the group within the larger framework of inclusiveness. [AI] Google Glass and the blind market an interview please read it!!!!
*18 May 2014* *Roberta:* Once thought the stuff of science fiction, smart glasses that put the digital world right in front of your eyes are becoming a reality. A new project from Telstra is seeing apps for Google Glass changed the lives of people with disability. And here to tell us more is Online Editor for Media Access Australia, Eliza Cussen. Welcome Eliza. *Eliza:* Hi Roberta. *Roberta: *We have talked about Google Glass on the program before, but to refresh our memories could you tell us just what it is? *Eliza:* Sure. Well basically Google Glass is a brand new type of device. It's like a smart phone but shaped like a pair of glasses. I think it's the best way to explain it. So it's a pair of smart glasses. So these are designed for you to see through, connect to the internet, and control with voice commands. In a similar way to people using Siri on an iPhone. *Roberta:*Now what kind of application does this have for blind and vision impaired people? *Eliza:* Well this is where it gets really exciting. As with most devices the joy comes from the apps that people make for it. And as the apps for vision impairment go, the sky is the limit with this device. The potential is just astounding. And of course the voice activated nature of Google Glass makes it perfectly suited for a blind or vision impaired person, even though that wasn't the original intention of it. So Google has started to release the product to developers so that they can start to make apps and software for it, and we're starting to see some really interesting projects. And as you said in the intro, one of these has been sponsored by Telstra, here in Australia, and a company called b2cloud has developed an app which basically turns Google Glass into a voice activated OCR camera. So they've released a little promotional video and in it we see Kelly Schultz, who's a Telstra worker who's blind. She uses Google Glass to identify things like bank notes and tell the difference between, in the video she's choosing between standard frozen peas and minted peas in the supermarket. *Roberta*: Gosh. *Eliza:* And the Google Glass it reads the packaging, identifies the difference, and announces it, This is a packet of minted peas. I know. *Roberta:* This is great. *Eliza:* I had goosebumps watching it, Roberta. *Roberta: *I'll bet. *Eliza:*Well Google Glass will also be able to help with navigation and orientation. So as we've talked about lots of times on the show before, Google Maps provides turn by turn navigation for pedestrians, which I'm sure a lot of listeners are already making use of, getting around the city. And Google Glass being able to recognise things like buildings you're standing in front of it will be able to tell you exactly where you are in the real world. So this is the game changer. *Roberta:* What are the benefits of something like this over specialist technology made just for the blind market? *Eliza:* So for me the magic of this is that it is a mainstream technology. It's something that's been marketed to everyone, but also happens to have huge benefits for disabled people. And I think this is really the future. Rather than creating specialist devices that are very expensive, that only blind people can use, it's about making mainstream technology applicable to blind people. And so that means that it isn't just the tool for access, it's a tool for inclusion. And what we really need to work hard to do is get app developers realising the value a device like this and helping to realise its potential for the blind and vision impaired markets. *Roberta: *Now the big question: how much does it cost, and how do we get our hands on it? *Eliza:* I cringe when you ask me this Roberta. I'm afraid these little beauties are harder to come by than hot cross buns in Spring. Yeah. Google, there's a real aura of mystery around this. It's all very James Bond. Google has only released a few hundred of them through the Glass Explorer program, which is currently only open to Americans. I've actually only ever seen one in the wild, so to speak, and that was in San Francisco, so I'm pretty sure the man wearing it was in fact a Google employee. Eventually these will be available in Australia. It is a matter of time. And we're expecting a price tag somewhere in the ballpark of $2,500. It is still a hefty investment for sure but I think it's one that could be worth considering for a lot of people. *Roberta:* Well to find out more about access to media and technology visit Media Access Australia website, that's mediaaccess.org.au, or call the office with any questions 02 9212 6242. I've been speaking with Eliza Cussen, Online Editor for Media Access Australia. Media Access Australia is a supporter of this program. Re: [AI] Is tour possible, casual and safe for VH.
Hi Nitesh, I will be quick. 1. Your caby can certainly drop you to the airline staff, after which they will tuide you. DO please inform them in advance after booking is done. 2. Book hotels etc. in advance after reading safety online and alos take peripheral services like guide etc. from the same hotel's reference so tracking back such people is easier. 3. As Ajay said, do feel comfortable and confident when you are paying for your hospitality in hotels and restaurants and yah, i do feel better when i pay extra service tips to the staff their as they sometimes work out of their way out of compassion to help us. SO be generous in rewarding such good feelings. Does not mean you are disrespecting their genuine service by money. 4. Let me congratulate your friend for such a daring expedition. I am sure, they will have moments to remember for life. But i would have taken following precautionary steps: a. Do try to find out a friend or a reference who can share local realities and cost for travel and hotels b. The person may be handy in case of any eventuality. 5. Do make a note of every person's name you deal with including his/her contacts. The fashionable line of i am very bad with names may be risky sometimes for us.
