[AI] Police bid to hush up disabled minor's gang rape: Activists

Kanika Sharma|:
Bhopal: Social activists have lodged a fresh complaint with National
Human Rights Commission and National Women Commission (NWC) over
police bid to hush up alleged gang-rape of disabled minor girl in
Chhindwara district. The 15-year-old tribal was allegedly gang-raped
on April 13.
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bhopal/Police-bid-to-hush-up-disabled-minors-gang-rape-Activists/articleshow/36091758.cms
An unknown person, who came on a motorbike, dropped her home. Her
clothes were different. She pointed to her private parts and started
crying, said her mother in the FIR registered on April 15.

The survivor is not as disabled as police are trying to portray. She
was raped by four people. Police are going by medical report which
said she had 'old tear' (of hymen), said Aradhana Bhargava, senior
lawyer in the district.

While doctors allegedly subjected the survivor to outlawed two-finger
test, police also violated the law by asking her to visit the police
station for recording statements. She is a minor and as per rules
police should have gone to her house, the lawyer said.

There was no evidence of an attempt at forceful intercourse, police said.

Chhindwara SP P Sharma denied allegations and said the family was not
cooperating in investigations. She is a disabled girl and is not able
to identify the accused, he told Times of India. Chindwara-based
social activist Kanika Sharma said, Even after more than one and half
months since the incident neither justice nor any kind of help has
reached the survivor. There could not have been a worse mockery of her
disability.

It was her mother, who realized that she was raped after seeing her
changed clothes and physical condition. Even after two weeks of FIR,
the survivor's statement was not taken. The police kept waiting for
experts to come, said Kanika, who had decided to take the matter to a
logical conclusion.

When sign language experts came on April 28 and statements were to be
recorded in front of the judge, mother claimed question asked in the
court scared her daughter.

NEW DELHI: The city police informed the Delhi high court that they have
installed 57 auditory devices at traffic signals in the capital for safety of
visually impaired people.

In his reply, filed before a bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Rajiv
Sahai Endlaw, deputy commissioner of traffic police also informed that 35 more
locations have been identified for providing auditory signals.

... Traffic police has provided 857 traffic signals and 401 traffic blinkers
all over Delhi for ensuring smooth flow of traffic and safety of pedestrians
and other road users. A total of 57 traffic signals have been provided with
auditory devices for the safety of visually handicapped persons. In addition,
35 locations have also been identified for providing auditory signals, the
reply filed through Rupinder Kumar, deputy commissioner of traffic police, said.

Besides... on roads where there is continuous flow of traffic, 22 pelican
traffic signals and 36 pedestrian traffic signals are functional which have the
facility to provide adequate time in the signal cycle to pedestrians for safely
crossing the roads. Additionally, 96 signals with pedestrian aspects have been
installed and it is envisaged to provide pedestrian aspects on nearly all the
signals, the official said.

The police's reply came after the court in March had issued notice to the Delhi
government and civic agencies on a plea seeking direction to provide parking
space to the physically challenged near the entrances of public buildings in
line with the Master Plan Delhi 2021. The bench had also asked the traffic
police, police commissioner and DDA to file responses.

The DCP also said that regular action is taken by traffic police to remove
illegal parking. He added that the traffic police prosecuted 7,10,025 people in
2013 and 2,96,232 in 2014 till April 30. The official also stated that action
is also being taken against second-hand car dealers, who are causing
encroachment on the roads of the capital.

The official said that the department had launched a special drive on May 6 in
coordination with the civic agencies for removal of encroachment on specially
identified 11 vital corridors in the NCT of Delhi, in which 567 encroachments
have been removed, action has been taken against 180 vendors, 159 vehicles have
been towed away, 1047 vehicles have been challaned and 145 notices for
obstructive parking have been issued. The drive shall continue on a regular
basis.

A PIL filed by social worker Vinod Kumar Bansal, through advocates Anupam
Srivastava and Sitab Ali Chaudhary, had sought the court's direction to the
Delhi government and civic agencies to install auditory signals at red lights
on public roads for physically handicapped people. The plea further sought
directions to make pavements wheelchair-friendly.

Shiv

[AI] career choices after 12th (hsc)

2014-06-05 Thread john clayton
Hello there,
I have recently completed 12th (hsc) and the time is now to choose
what to do,what field to choose. in a few cases, its already too
late,but ey.
I did commerce,so I do know a few choices that are available to me
such as cs,or ac,which I am not at all interested in,and are quite
impracticle imo,for getting a job later.
All I care about is doing a course, takeing a career path, what you will
which ends up in me getting a good job,or at least which has good
prospects for getting one.
BSCIT is something I could have done, farely easyly at that, besides the
diagrams and such, but that option is out, since at the time I was
advised to take lower maths I had no idea it would blow up so
spectacularly in my face.
besides the options I have mentioned above,I have no clear idea of
what else can or cannot be done, and what do they entail. I.E what
kinds of coursework they have and so on.
To what can not be done,I am sure to get replys of if you are willing
everything is doable,I guess that's true, but that is not what I
mean, what I mean is after having done commerce, etc.
What I'd like to know is what options are available, and what have you
that have gon on to study after hsc taken as your career choice? and
how has it proved to be?
Here are a few that I have heard talks about but not clear about as to
what jobs you are able to do after doing a perticular course,or
graduating slash getting a digree.
BA Hons (English) I like to read, and I actually do read a lot,so this
might be something good. however,I have no idea what jobs is one
qualified after doing this?is there something else I should do along
with this to improve my chances?
Mass Communication/Journalism: this option looks right for me too,but
again. I have no idea what kind of things are tought in this
course, and what would be the best field in it to specialise in.
law: this I believe I'm too late for, since I already may have missed
the clat and the other entrence exams. I could do this too, however.
this would be my last choice. that is if I had no other options
available.
Any other options?suggestions?thoughts? ideas and such are all welcome.
I don't manage to keep up with all the trafic on this list
usually, though. so I'd prefer private replys. but feel free to post a
reply back to this topic on the list as well, hopefully I won't mis
it,and it could prove to be some use to someone else, too.
Thanks much,

Dear Mumbai Members

Request you to help the student by filling up the research form, as some
where its for our own benefit.

Look forward for your full cooperation.

Dear all,

This is a humble request to all of you to kindly respond to the previously
posted online survey for. If you all could participate in this study by
filling up the form it would be of great importance to the researcher as
well as to the community. The objective behind this survey is to understand
the choices and preferences of individuals with visual impairment. As an
inclusive society it becomes necessary to understand the dynamics of mate
selection among this population as our society as almost marginalized it. It
would help to gauge a larger picture as in what are the needs and choices of
people who are visually challenged and how appreciative the society is
towards the concept of marriage as far visually challenged individuals are
concerned.

Following is the research form Link:-

Seek minimum 75 members to fill in the form.

Subject: [AI] Aarthi Burtony: Good News to Share

Hello fellow friends,

First of all, let me congratulate you all for the election of Mr.
Narendra Moodi as the head of the New Indian Government.

I am pleased to inform you of my selection to participate in the
Washington Fellowship Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) 2014.
The Washington Fellowship YALI is a program of President Obama which
aims to have 500 young African Leaders in the US to attend an exchange
study program of 6 weeks in 3 diffield. The 3 fields include public
management, business entrepreneurship and civic leadership.
Application for the Fellowship was opened in January 2014. I applied
for the Fellowship and I have been selected after having attended an
interview when being selected as semi finalist. I will attend 6 weeks
of Civic Leadership course at Rutgers University, the State University
of New Jersey. Our flight from Mauritius to the US and back to our
home country is paid for as well as our expenses including meals on
university campus. I will stay in the appartment on the university
campus. The Mauritian delegation is made of 5 Mauritians one person
from Rodrigues Island and 4 persons from the Seychelles. I am the only
person with a disability in the Mauritian delegation.

What is more interestingly fabulous is that all the 500 YALi
participants will spend 3 days in Washington DC to attend a 3 days
seminar presided by President Obama himself! 20 universities have
volunteered to participate in this program. Each Mauritian participant
is in a different university. We will be in classes of 25 students
from other African countries.

I am leaving Mauritius to undergo this wonderful adventure next week.
I am proud that at least one blind person forms part of the Mauritian
delegation.

It is the good news I wanted to share with you.

Cheers,

Aarthi Burtony

Re: [AI] career choices after 12th (hsc)

2014-06-05 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi John,

In India, it is unlikely that you will get a high-paying job after college.
You will have to study further. However, what you could do is to get
something like 2 to 3 years of work experience after or during college and
then consider post graduation.

Look at a B-Com (Hons) course. This is what it is called in Delhi. The
course is a mix of economics, accounting, law, income tax with a bit of math
and literature (only in the first year). Yes, there are diagrams but they
are not difficult to handle.

Try to find a 4 year degree course so that you can apply abroad for further
study or consider taking the scholastic aptitude test now and applying to
colleges abroad.

Have you thought about starting your own venture? A job is not the only
option.

Dear Mahesh,
I've found a major discrepancy in the method you described and what the JAWS
screen reader reports regarding the actual code of a symbol/letter. That has
put me in a great dilemma! For example, if you want to see the code of
capital A, whereas the JAWS would report as code number 65, and , according
to the method described by you, it is reporting code number 0041. So, what
exactly is the code of capital A?

[AI] Its two years today on launching truly accessible talking ATM in India

2014-06-05 Thread Prashant Naik
Dear Friends,

On 6th June 2012, a truly accessible and talking ATM which is well accepted
by persons with blindness as an ATM machine allowing independent cash
withdrawal with audible instructions was inaugurated at Blind People’s
Association, Ahmedabad, Gujrat.

Sharing few feedbacks on Talking ATM for blind received in last couple of
years.

The Union Bank of India has taken a great initiative in developing and
installing Accessible ATM in dual language and that which is accessible to
persons with orthopedic disabilities as well. The First ATM if this kind
has encouraged other banks to install such accessible ATMs across the
country. The whole credit for initiating this movement of promoting
inclusive money management by the people with disabilities goes to this
bank. This Bank has emerged a true and innovator in this regard. – Dr.
Bhushan Punani (Executive Director, Blind People’s Association India)

I would like to inform you that the Talking ATM of Union Bank is gradually
becoming popular amongst visually challenged friends. We have noticed that
at least 5 to 6 VI persons visit this place everyday some for transactions
and others for learning. During these days I have used it more than 10
times and have faced no problem at all, nor have I come across any problems
faced by others.

- Ranchod Soni, BPA, Gujrat, July 2012

We have received extremely positive feedback from all the blind persons who
have been using the talking atm. It is being used regularly by our VI
staff, students and many individuals who visit us for different purposes. In
fact some of the employed bind persons travel long distance to be able to
use the ATM machine independently. - Arvind Ashdhir, Hony. Gen.
Secretary, National Association for the Blind Delhi. (08-10-2013)

I was very impressed indeed by your 'talking' ATM and can certify that I
undertook a number of operations successfully.

- Kevin Carey, Chair, Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB)

The first Talking bilingual accessible ATM that has been installed by the
Union Bank of India at the BPA, Vastrapur, Ahmadabad is one such example of
what true accessibility in an ATM really is. We commend the efforts of
Union Bank of India in taking this step forward which will impact the
banking industry and how it views accessibility and the lives of persons
with disabilities. (June 2012)

I am just back from testing and demonstrating the accessible Diebold ATM at
Union bank’s central office. Congratulations. It is brilliant. Thanks to
you. (Jan 2013)

- Dr. Sam Taraporevala

I was very impressed indeed by your 'talking' ATM and can certify that I
undertook a number of operations successfully.

- Kevin Carey, Chair, Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB)

After withdrawing cash from the ATM, for the first time on her own with no
guidance or support from Union Bank’s HSR Layout talking ATM, she said this
was a “great moment for the visually-challenged in the city”. “We will now
be able to withdraw money ourselves. People coming to Mitra Jyothi to learn
and to get trained to get jobs will be greatly benefited. Everything should
be made more accessible to the physically challenged. There should be more
talking ATMs all over the city like near railway stations, bus stops and
organisations like Mitra Jyothi,”

- Madhu Singhal, managing trustee of Mitra Jyothi

Talking ATM is indeed a boon for visually challenged people, and to me, it
can be defined as “a step towards independence, self-reliance, and
inclusion. -

Gunjan Kumari, New Delhi

I and Nagraj are using Union Bank of India talking ATM at Chembur. It’s
really wonderful experience. It really inculcates feeling of pride and self
confidence.

– Vishakha More, Mumbai

The experience of using an ATM independently was truly liberating and I am
grateful to Union Bank of India for giving this opportunity. I am now
planning to open an account with them

– Ketan Kothari , Mumbai

It was a great feeling to transact through my ATM card independently.

- Himanshu Saha, Kolkata

I have tried it personally, and it is really great. The headphone facility
is good and the operating is user friendly. This is going to be of great
help to us.

- Yahya Sapatwala, Gujrat.

Friends, as always requesting you to use Talking ATMs as much as possible
so that we can demand for more numbers.

Prashant Naik
