Re: [AI] [SayEverything] Doubt regarding Moto E phone:
for receiving call just swip the fingers left to right. And batry charge, insert your charger pin in to the plug and on it, the talkback will say the time or you will get to hear particular sound that means your phone batry is charging. [AI] FYI: 17,000 candidates clear UPSC prelims
Anyone on the list? congrats. http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-newdelhi/17000-candidates-clear-upsc-prelims/article6502135.ece Nearly 17,000 candidates have qualified the Civil Services (preliminary) Examination, 2014, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission, the results of which were declared on Tuesday morning. With over 4,50,000 candidates appearing for the examination on August 24, the results were declared in a record 50-day time period. The successful candidates will now have to appear in the mains examination, which will be conducted from December 14 to December 20. According to an UPSC official, there was an increase of 40 per cent in the number of students appearing in this year's examination compared to last year's 3,24,279 . The official said that in previous years, results were declared within an average of 68 days from the day of the examination. Successful candidates will get more time this year to study because of early declaration of results, said the official. This year was tumultuous for the UPSC with a controversy that erupted over the pattern of the Civil Services Examination in July demanding a change in the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) or paper II. Students had taken to the streets claiming the examination put aspirants from rural areas or with Hindi background at a disadvantage. The Union government had decided then that marks of the English section questions, asked in paper-II, would not be included for gradation or merit in the exam. , The UPSC has advised candidates not to file RTI applications seeking details of their marks which will be provided to them only after the entire selection process for the Civil Services Examination is over. Candidates are also informed that marks, cut-off marks, and answer keys of the Civil Services (preliminary) Examination, 2014, will be provided only after the entire process of the Civil Services Examination, 2014, is over i.e. after the declaration of the final result. Therefore, no application under the RTI Act, 2005, or otherwise will be entertained , the UPSC said in a statement. The list of successful candidates, who have qualified for admission to the Indian Forest Service (main) examination, 2014, was also declared. As many as 1,106 candidates have been declared successful to appear for the Indian Forest Services (main) examination which will be held on November 22. They were also selected through the Civil Services (preliminary) Examination, said an official. The successful candidates have been asked to fill in the Detailed Application Form (DAF) for the Civil Services Main (CSM) examination scheduled to be held from December 14 this year. The DAF (CSM) will be available on the UPSC website from October 28 till November 11, 2014. The status of blind women in India was pathetic, with 99 per cent of them being uneducated and unemployed. About 73 per cent of the blind women in the country were unmarried and being uneducated, had little means of sustaining themselves, says a report on the Status of Blind Women in India, conducted by the Women's Committee of the Asian Blind Union and NGO Forum in December 2000. The need for pressurising the Government for providing social security and other support systems for blind women, to equip them to lead a better life in society was one of the suggestions that came up at a two-day Leadership Training Workshop for blind women, organised here recently in association with the women's forum of the Kerala Federation of the Blind. In the Net age, most of the vocational courses designed for the blind had become out-dated and it was the need of the hour to finds out newer avenues for vocational training and employment for the blind, Ms. Madhu Singhal, the South Zone Coordinator for the NGO Forum of Blind Women in India, pointed out. The leadership training programme was organised with the aim of building self-confidence and self-esteem among blind women and in developing leadership qualities in them. The participants were given an insight into various aspects of developing entrepreneur skills, legal rights and how blind women could manage household responsibilities. Most blind women were neglected within their families and often dependent on one of the family members. In rural areas especially, blind women did not know that they too could train themselves to become self-employed and self-reliant, Ms. Singhal said. Education which does not promise self-reliance has no relevance for the blind. Special schools and hostels for blind women were necessary if more of them were to be induced to study. Blind women should be imparted entrepreneurial skills, training in legal and human rights, communication skills, self-defence and self-help skills as blind women were an extremely vulnerable group in society, Mr. Georgekutty Kareparambil, the Director of KFB said. -- Avinash Shahi Doctoral student at Centre for Law and Governance JNU Clean India Campaign: Let us also chip in! [AI] How many people in India are rich in 2014?
I want share some general data and what interest all of us; particular to India. For the purpose of the report, they have taken into account only adult population. We continue to be a very poor country. So being rich is all the more significant in our country. For dollar to rupee conversion, the rate assumed is 1 USD = Rs.60. A country is considered rich, if the average wealth per person is over $100,000 (Rs.60 lakhs). The richest country in the world is Switzerland with average wealth per person of $581,000 (Rs.3.49 crores). The top ten richest countries in the world are Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, Australia, France, UK and USA. India's average wealth per person is $4645 (Rs.2.79 lakhs) and the median wealth is $1006 (Rs.60 thousand). An average Swiss citizen is 125 times better off than an average Indian citizen. Median wealth of 60K implies half of our population is not even worth Rs.60,000. In fact 95% of the population in India has a wealth below $10,000 (Rs.6 lakhs). Inequality is a way of life. This is not only true for India but holds good for other countries as well. Globally, the top 1% of the population owns close to 50% of the wealth. Top 10% owns 87% of all wealth. The bottom 50% of the populations barely owns 1% of global wealth. 21% of the global population is classified as middle class- with a wealth of above $10,000 (Rs.6 lakhs) to $100,000 (Rs.60 lakhs). There are 128,200 individuals in the world who are worth more than $50 million (Rs.300 crores). There are 45,200 individuals in the world who are worth more than $100 million (Rs.600 crores). The total wealth of the world is $263 trillion. India's total wealth is $3.6 trillion. We are 18% of the world's population but have wealth of only 1.36%. 2.38 lakh Indians are members of top 1% of global wealth holders. 3.8 million Indians are members of top 10% global wealth holders. 1.82 lakh Indians are worth $ 1 million (Rs.6 crore) or more. 2.3 million (or) 0.3% adult Indians are worth $100,000 (Rs.60 lakhs) or more. So only top 0.3% of the India's population can be classified as rich according to the global yard stick of wealth = $100,000 Property and other real assets like gold contribute 86% of Indians wealth. -- With thanks and regards (Ramji Tripathi) Personal Assistant, BANARASA HINDU UNIVERSITY, Varanasi: 221005 Mob: 9453365780, 7524936161, 9454256751 Facebook ID: ramji.tripathi.503 Clean India Campaign: Let us also chip in! Here's how your voice is being used to identify you 13 Oct, 2014, 1654 hrs IST, AP Businesses and governments around the world are increasingly turning to voice biometrics, which sometimes are described as voiceprints, to replace passwords and fight fraud. LONDON: Businesses and governments around the world are increasingly turning to voice biometrics, which sometimes are described as voiceprints, to replace passwords and fight fraud. A look at this fast-growing technology: TALK YOUR WAY PAST SECURITY Canada's TD Bank Group, the National Australia Bank Ltd. and the Bank of New Zealand are among the businesses allowing customers to sign into their accounts or skip call center security questions by supplying a voiceprint. There's no need for a call center agent to know your name, your mother's maiden name, your inside leg measurement or whatever, said Clive Summerfield, whose Sydney-based Auraya Systems is supplying the technology to the Bank of New Zealand. The machine can verify that this voice belongs to this account and that's all you need to know. SIGN CONTRACTS WITH YOUR VOICE California-based VoiceVault gives consumers and businesses the option of attaching vocal signatures to documents by speaking into the receiver following a telephone prompt. Nik Stanbridge, who spoke to The Associated Press this year when he was still with VoiceVault, said the technology helped cut down on paperwork and increased closure rates for health insurance contracts. Executives can use the technology to close big deals, too. The countersigning can be done by somebody on a golf course, Stanbridge said. TURN YOUR SPEECH INTO A SPARE KEY An Israeli company, FST Biometrics, is using voice biometrics to secure everything from apartment complexes to airports. Voice recognition in conjunction with other biometric techniques now screens those who show up at the door of New York City's Knickerbocker Village. Executive Shahar Belkin said the technology also is being tested for access to secure areas of Israel's Ben Gurion Airport. The voice biometric replaces what we used to use for a PIN code or a RFID (swipe) card, Belkin said. We found it to be much more user-friendly and at the same time much more secure. HELP AUTHORITY KEEP AN EAR ON YOU Georgia-based AnyTrax uses the technology to monitor low-risk offenders on parole. The company's Louie Hunter said the automated calls to an offender's home landline telephone prompts the person being monitored to repeat a random set of numbers into the phone. It can spare people convicted of petty crimes from routine visits to their parole officers. The successful candidates will now have to appear in the mains examination, which will be conducted from December 14 to December 20. Abstract People with disabilities have unique experiences negotiating their sexual needs and desires with their partners. The current lack of research on sexual partner negotiations and conversations around disability demonstrates the need for further research in this area. This study examines the experiences of nine adults with physical disabilities regarding negotiations with their current, former and potential sexual partners about sexual activities. Using a phenomenological approach, this study focuses on adults with physical disabilities, ages 25-50, who live in the metro area of a city in the Southwest, and who self identify as having at least one physical disability. The emergent themes of being defined by disability, partner connection, representation of self, and kink as communication, demonstrate some of the distinctive aspects of sexual negotiation experienced by people with disabilities. [AI] Welfare minister apologises for disability pay comments
Welfare minister apologises for disability pay comments Welfare minister Lord Freud has apologised for foolish and offensive remarks in which he suggested people with disabilities could be paid less than the minimum wage. Labour has called on the Conservative peer to resign after he said some workers were not worth the full wage. David Cameron distanced himself from the comments, saying they were not the views of anyone in government. Lord Freud said he was profoundly sorry and supported the minimum wage. The row dominated the first Prime Minister's Questions after the conference recess, with Ed Miliband saying the comments demonstrated the Conservatives' worst instincts. Ed Miliband asked the prime minister about the future of a welfare minister In response, the prime minister said he did not need lectures from anybody about looking after disabled people and urged the Labour leader not to cast aspersions. Lord Freud's comments came during a fringe meeting at the Conservative conference last month when he was asked whether it was preferable for someone with a disability, who could not get a job, to be paid less than the minimum wage - and to have their income topped up with benefits - in order to give them the experience of work and boost their self esteem. '£2 an hour' In response to the question, from Conservative councillor David Scott, he reportedly said there was no system for going below the minimum wage. But he added: Now, there is a small. there is a group, and I know exactly who you mean, where actually as you say they're not worth the full wage and actually I'm going to go and think about that particular issue, whether there is something we can do nationally, and without distorting the whole thing, which actually if someone wants to work for £2 an hour, and it's working can we actually. Esther McVey on Lord Freud comments: These words will haunt him Labour circulated a transcript of remarks and a partial recording, just before PM's questions began. Raising the issue in Parliament, Mr Miliband said: These are not the words of someone who ought to be in charge of policy relating to the welfare of disabled people. Surely someone holding those views can't possibly stay in his government? 'Thinking aloud' But Mr Cameron said these were not the views of the government. We pay the minimum wage, we are reforming disability benefits, we want to help disabled people in our country and we want to help more of them into work. And instead of casting aspersions, why does he not get back to talking about the economy. In a statement Lord Freud, a former banker who has been a minister in the Department for Work and Pensions since 2010, offered a full and unreserved apology. I was foolish to accept the premise of the question, he said. To be clear, all disabled people should be paid at least the minimum wage, without exception, and I accept that it is offensive to suggest anything else. Lord Freud said he cared passionately about disabled people and was proud to have played a full part in a government that is fully committed to helping disabled people overcome the many barriers they face in finding employment. The BBC's political editor Nick Robinson said it was important to understand the context of the conversation and that Lord Freud was not arguing for a new policy of routinely paying people less than the minimum wage. He said one interpretation of Lord Freud's comments was that he was thinking aloud but suggestions that the minimum wage could be undercut would seem heartless and come back to haunt him. Analysis: By Damon Rose, Ouch! Unemployment for disabled people has remained stubbornly around 50% for over twenty years despite schemes and incentives. It's perhaps understandable that Lord Freud might want to think outside the box to allow desperate disabled people to shine and get a real job with a real (if low) wage which for some may be preferable to remaining at home, isolated, looking forward to a life on benefits. If disabled people could charge less for their time, they might get a job more easily... but it could also send out unhelpful messages and devalue all disabled workers. Suggesting that disabled people may not be worthy of what's deemed to be a minimum wage is seen by campaigners as unacceptable, as Conservative MP Philip Davies found to his cost in 2011. Equal rights, equal pay are bound up in law and feel right and just. Lord Freud sounds like he was raising an important debate, but has muddied the waters with what sounds like disrespectful language. And as a minister responsible for controversial welfare reforms, campaigners have been quick to claim it is a troubling insight into how he thinks. Disabled affairs minister Esther McVey told the BBC that the comments were wrong and could not be justified. And the Liberal Democrats said what Lord Freud said was completely unacceptable. A former adviser to

Activists have welcomed the move but asked for audio assistance as well. All the EVMs used in Thane district for this election have the information embossed on them. This is for the first time we are using them, said Madhavi Sardeshmukh, deputy collector of Thane. The new EVMs from Electronics Corporation of India Ltd serve dual purpose, catering to the general public as well as those with visual impairment. These machines have numbers 1-15 on the ballot unit embossed in Braille. When a visually challenged voter arrived, he would be given information on the numbers and the corresponding names against them on an EVM after which s/he could proceed to cast his vote, explained an official. In places where the number of candidates is more than 15, officials will put stickers after masking the existing embossed numbers. Visually impaired voters and their escorts will be told about the change. The earlier units used stickers in Braille and were prone to damage. But voters said they could benefit if audio assistance was given. The process could be much faster and easier had they been provide with audio assistance. A headphone could be given to them for privacy, said Mahesh Dodke, office bearer of an association for the visually challenged. Regards, Shiv Clean India Campaign: Let us also chip in! I am going to start writing on Computer topics, starting with, what most you (the non-engineering ones), consider as a difficult topic - DBMS. Only because it sounds so serious and technical doesn't actually mean it's a tough topic to understand. Trust me, when I first read the chapter, every thing sounded Greek and Latin* to me, so, I re-read it couple of more times and I forgot what had been so difficult! So, what is DBMS? It is Data Base Management System. Off course! I'm sure all you know the full form, but have you really ever given a thought to the words that make up the full form - 'cause that is where the entire secret lies in understanding the core of this chapter!Data - is any input which has been processed. It can be in numeric, alphabetic or alphanumeric form. Try to imagine data as physical files...the kind of dusty files found in government offices. This processed data (or dusty files) needs to be stored and kept somewhere, so that when we need them we can easily retrieve it. But where do we keep it? How do we keep it? Don't worry; the computer experts have solved your problem by creating the 'database'. Database - is simply a 'place' where all the data are collected and stored in an organized manner. Think of it as a collection of many steel racks, like the ones found in old government offices! All the files/data are kept according to their serial numbers/file/folder names (or any other identification style), and stored in the racks/database. Management system - In government officers, there are peons who are responsible for keeping the files in the right place, bringing required files to the senior officers, putting it back again after updating the files etc., this is nothing but the system of file management in the office. Similarly, in computer's database, it's 'management system' is doing the work of the peon; bring the required files, putting back in the right place, etc. but more efficiently than a peon and faster too!! I really do hope some vapour-ish ideas are forming in your head about DBMS! Thus, putting down all our ideas in definition form - DBMS is a software, (i) which helps a user in creating a collection of records and information and storing them on the computer in a systematic way (database), (ii) it also helps in organizing, sorting and retrieval of the records/information from the database, when required by the user, to help the user in decision making (management system). DBMS MODEL Benefits of DBMS:- 1.Faster storage and retrieval time 2.Accessing data is easy and fast 3.Data integrity(credibility of the data) and security. In govt. offices, anyone can pick up any file! But DBMS requires password authorization to access important files. 4.Backups and recovery are possible only in digital world, hence today physical files are becoming extinct. Points to remember in DBMS 1.In DBMS data are stored in relational model, using tables with rows and columns (remember the steel racks!). 2.There are two types of Data Manipulation Languages (DML), Structured Query Language (SQL) and Data Definition Language (DDL). 3.DML are computer languages also known as query language, it is used for accessing and working on the data. In other words, DML (SQL and DDL), are like the languages people use, Hindi or English, in an office to give orders to the peon! 4.Data redundancy - which means there are no duplications of data. No multiple files of the same kind. 5.Data dictionary - is like a normal dictionary, but containing metadata. 6.Metadata - contains information about all the data in the DBMS. 7.The Keys - Primary key is used to identify a particular or specific record (file). It is unique to a particular file. Foreign Key makes a connection between a component (field) in one table with a component identified by a primary key. 8.Relational database - is the kind of database model, where there are logical connections between the various files, which are kept in tables. For example: In the given diagram, the information is stored in tables (with rows and columns), in this particular case in two relational tables. Every column has a Field name (employee ID, first name, last name, e-mail ID, Department ID and Department name). The relation between the two tables is created by the field 'Department ID', which connects the Employees name/ID/e-mail to a particular Department like HR or software or accounts. This is relational database, where a relation is made between items of the database. DBMS That's all folks. I am hoping that DBMS is no more vapour-ish but solid concrete! It can not get simpler than this! Keep learning and keep sharing the knowledge - that's the best way to gain knowledge! [AI] Differently abled cast votes, question others' apathy
Source: http://m.timesofindia.com/home/specials/assembly-elections-2014/maharashtra- news/Differently-abled-cast-votes-question-others-apathy/articleshow/4483154 3.cms Differently abled cast votes, question others' apathy Oct 16, 2014, 05.15AM IST TNN[ Nergish Sunavala ] MUMBAI: There was a dearth of facilities for the differently abled at Dharavi's transit camp polling station but that didn't stop polio victims with various mobility aids from casting their vote on Wednesday. They came atop their friends' scooters, husbands' bikes and some even trekked to the polling station in the searing heat with only a walking stick to lean on. When this journalist approached a potential interviewee, she was asked to first help the elderly woman with a walking aid navigate the crowd as no other assistance was at hand. There was also little sensitivity on display from the polling agents, who were busy ushering crowds in and out of the gates. For instance, Shama Mehboob Khan, a polio victim, who travelled to the polling station on her husband's bike, was forced to leave on foot. Her husband was asked to remove his two-wheeler, which was parked to the side of the thoroughfare, while she gave us a brief interview. For most mobility-challenged adults, reaching the spot remained the biggest hurdle. Polio victim Vishnu Chauhan wheeled himself to the polling station on a tricycle, his wife pushing from behind. It takes an hour to and fro, said the 37-year-old hawker, who sweated profusely during the journey. He remains cynical about the political class though his tricycle was gifted by the Congress. But his belief in the democratic system is still intact. Whether you have all four limbs or just one, you have to cast your vote, he told TOI. Another polio victim using crutches, Shailesh Shedge, added, Vote keemti cheez hoti hai. Some even considered it their duty to be role models for the rest of us. If I can do my duty of voting, then why can't all other youngsters, said 24-year-old Mansi Rane, who suffers from cerebral palsy and has a speech defect and walking handicap. Kaustubh Tapal (21), a visually-impaired student of St. Xavier's College, who has voted in the LS and BMC elections, strode into the station, asked for a list of candidates in Braille and after checking if the machine had Braille labels, proceeded to cast his vote. Those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and cognitive impairments were able to master the motions of voting but their understanding of its larger implications, remained limited. Mentally challenged Mayur Kotak is a huge fan of a certain leader, claims his father Sudhir. We discussed it at home. He knew the symbols and accordingly pressed the button. Parul Kumtha's son Kabir, who has ASD, voted for the second time in this election. He was a smooth operator this time and had his voting finger ready to be inked, wrote Parul on Facebook. His mother, who walked him through the process, had to sign a declaration promising she wouldn't disclose his vote or assist any other individual in this election. The polling agents remembered 6.4-ft tall Kabir from the LS polls, but were still bemused by his final request, wrote Kumtha. After he was done with the business of voting, he politely asked for the ink pad and name registry to do some thumb-print art work. Clean India Campaign: Let us also chip in! This thread is closed for all traffic and suitable action taken. Harish Kotian -Original Message- From: AccessIndia [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of ramji tripati Sent: 15 October 2014 15:23 To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Subject: [AI] How many people in India are rich in 2014? Re: [AI] Talking Caller ID Phone
Hi there! Lookwise, This is a very nice looking phone but as far as voice quality is concerned, it doesn't give good experience. One thing is notable, if you use thisinstrument where the service provider is giving you the FSK signals, this phone even doesn't provide clip facility and the company doesn't respond properly. This is my first handexperience. If you want to use it with MTNL and BSNL, both of the service providers do not transmit FSK signals, so it will work but the voice output is a bit irritating and you'll have to try to listen to it carefully to know what it speeks. Re: [AI] EVMs with embossed Braille script in Thane
Yes, they had braille labeling and braille ballot here in Nagpur. However, the glitch was in the labels. After 16, again next row began with 1.
