Re: [AI] FYI: 17,000 candidates clear UPSC prelims
It is very good news for the disabled people in india, but still there is confusion that upsc would slect disabled candidates in services or not, because after petition they would allow you to filip the forms and get into entry but the final result will show the actual result. [AI] Para athletes ordered not to speak to the media reports TOI
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/more-sports/others/Para-athletes-ordered-not-to-speak-to-the-media/articleshow/44845067.cms NEW DELHI: In a shocking case of insensitive and highhanded behaviour by sports administrators, the Indian athletes going for Para Asian Games in Incheon (for sportspersons with various disabilities) have been forced to sign a contract which bars them from going to the media with their complaints. This gag has been enforced to stop these disabled athletes from gaining sympathy by trying to project themselves as victims through frivolous allegations. As per the contract, anyone who goes to the media will face a lifetime ban and those who do not sign will not be allowed to participate in the Games. In the section Media Requirements of the contract, a copy of which is with TOI, it is clearly stated that these athletes face a life ban for flouting the norms. We were told we would get out air tickets only when after we signed these stifling contracts. Some of us protested but there was no option in the end, said one of the athletes participating in the games. The Paralympic Committee of India's (PCI) explanation for taking this Draconian step is amazing. These athletes are indisciplined, so this contract was made to keep them under check, said Rajesh Tomar, the president of PCI. Tomar said that some athletes try to gain sympathy by showing themselves as victims in front of the media. It is very important for sportspersons to be disciplined and this contract will be a psychological pressure. If they have a problem, they will first have to approach PCI and give the committee a month's time to probe. This committee is doing so much for these disabled athletes - we organised a grand farewell dinner which was attended by ministers, they have granted good allowances during the games and they will also get their sports kits on time, said Tomar. The farewell dinner for all the 90 athletes going to Incheon was held on Monday at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Some para sportswomen have written to the ministry that they weren't provided with cab facility after the dinner and they were out on the streets at 12:30 in the night. The ceremony got over very late. There were just two taxis waiting outside one for all the men and women. I had to take an auto at 12:30am for Pahar ganj from JN Stadium. Some of us have written to the ministry and the committee but have got no reply, said an athlete. Reacting to this, Tomar said only two or three women were left and they have set up a committee to probe the matter. Yes, this complaint has reached us and we are probing the matter. But these women reached home safely at the end of the day. PCI was in news last month as there were reports that the officials were taking their family members as para athletes' escorts. Now, the names suggested by the athletes as escorts have been cleared for Incheon, said Tomar. Meanwhile, the para table tennis players have claimed they have been given no escorts. No escorts are going with us. We have been approaching PCI regarding this matter for days but to no avail, said Suvarna Raj, a para table tennis player. Para Asian games will begin on October 18 and end on October 24. A delegation of 135 people is going from India. Clean India Campaign: Let us also chip in! Fingernails can predict health troubles as changes in the shape, color, or texture of nails can be indicators of a variety of conditions. For example, one of the signs of lung disease is nail clubbing, a variation in the shape of the fingernails, in which they gradually begin to curve around the fingertips. Yellowing of the fingernails is often a sign of respiratory health troubles, such as chronic bronchitis, while a blue tint to the nails may be due to reduced oxygen flow. Spooned nails, in which there is a visible indentation similar to a scoop, can indicate liver disease or heart disease. More about fingernails: *Fingernails are made of keratin, the same protein that makes up the hair. *Psoriasis, a skin condition that causes skin cells to accumulate into dry, scaly patches instead of shedding, first shows signs in the fingernails approximately 10% of the time. *Fingernails grow nearly twice as fast as toenails, at around 0.14 inches (3.5 mm) per month on average for fingers versus 0.62 inches (1.6 mm) for toenails--it can take around three to six months to grow an entire new nail. -- nothing is difficult unless you make it appear so. r. aravind, D R O in bank of baroda, mobile no: +91 9940369593, email id : aravind_...@yahoo.com, aravind.andhrab...@gmail.com. [AI] For this blind student, PhD is another feat
Dear Anjum I'm glad to read this news which talks you and your PH.D many congratulations. Wishing you a great teaching and researching career ahead I'm copying this TOI piece to 'Sayeverything' and 'accesindia' for others to read and inspire to pursue higher education in smaller cities. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/coimbatore/For-this-blind-student-PhD-is-another-feat/articleshow/44808334.cms COIMBATORE: When Anjum Khan received her PhD on Monday, it meant more than it does to most doctoral candidates-the 27-year-old lost her vision at the age of five after an attack of measles and has studied entirely in Braille. Anjum is an assistant professor of English at Avinashilingam University. Her family moved from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh to Coimbatore in 1993 for her treatment but doctors said she would never regain her vision. While my parents were thinking what next, the doctors told us about Avinashilingam school for girls, says Anjum. She began learning Braille and use audio technology to help her read, write and study. Her father, Mehmood Khan got a job at a private cement company in Madukkarai, 27km from Coimbatore. If Anjum had to continue her studies, Avinashilingam was among the few options as it had facilities and faculty to help her. I decided I would live in hostel and study. It is then that I realised that to gain something, one has to sacrifice something, Anjum says. She lived in the hostel for 12 years from Class 6 till she finished her postgraduate degree. After finishing school, Anjum joined the Avinashilingam University for Women to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. She finished her masters' degree and applied for her doctoral studies in 2009, says S Kalamani, Anjum's guide and an associate professor in the department of English, Avinashilingam University. Anjum had to leave thehostel after her MA, but, regularly visited me every Friday and told me how her research was progressing, she says. Anjum's younger brother Abid Ali died in a road accident eight years ago while she was doing her masters' degree. My father had bought him a bike to make his commute between college and home easier, says Anjum. It was a difficult time for the family. But, I have faced so much that I treat happiness and sorrow equally, she says. Anjum has dedicated her PhD to her brother. Anjum did her research on 'Ethnic Silhouettes: An Interpretation Of The Community In Select Works Of M G Vassanji In The Light Of New Historicism'. She became an assistant professor in January 2013 in the university in which she studied. Besides teaching at the university, Anjum also teaches blind children Braille and computer operations. I consider teaching a means to reach people, she says. -- Forwarded message -- From: anjum khan sweet123an...@gmail.com Date: Wed, 2 Jul 2014 07:22:09 +0530 Subject: help To: avinash shahi shahi88avin...@gmail.com -- Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. To: spr.shar...@gmail.com Hello Friends, I am the founder at Kriyate, the company behind SimplEye. I wish to thank you all for your excited response to SimplEye. Through groups like yours, organisations in network, direct conversations with users and on social media, we learnt a lot of feedback about the launcher. I understand that the simplicity and Braille typing are the most appreciated features of the app and request for more features is the most common demand. I wish to share that we are an India based company, with all design, development and testing being done here. Hence, we prioritized India for our product launch. And now that we are hearing so much about our product, we want to make sure we include all your suggestions in product upgrades and make sure you get absolutely the best experience and nothing less. Our intention was to start with a basic platform and make it super-useful with your help. I see we are on that path. To this end, I am covering some of the requests below: - Application Quit bug: we noticed application wasn't quitting properly and was reopening on some phones. We have corrected this and new version is available for download. - Braille Keyboard gestures: most users were very fast in typing but found space and delete gestures as speed breakers, we have improved this (and other gesture) and it will be available soon after Diwali. - Braille Keyboard as a separate app: I know many of you loved the idea of having this keyboard in your android launcher. We have taken this up too, and it will be available by end of October. - Also, as a bonus, we are adding Navigation feature in the launcher. You will be able to use this to locate yourself, hear the direction on compass, search for locations and step-by-step navigate to them, and save destinations and markers on way. Re: [AI] Fwd: SimplEye - We are all ears!!
Hi Pleasure to have you in the list. Glad that you are amongst us to listen to our woes. To start with, our problem is to understand what this app can do and its features. Secondly to know the gestures to drive it fully without sight. I think, for this, it is necessary to have a podcast which gives in detail how the various tasks can be done entirely by gestures without looking at the screen. For this, you need to train at least 1 blind person who can do the recording. Another point to consider is that the app should be fully compatible with Talkback and there should not be any conflict how various tasks are done by Talkback. Let us know in which city your developers are based where we can get a blind volunteer to get trained up. It is very much necessary to work this project up having our close participation in the lifecycle of this product. As a concept, I liked this product but I am afraid, I could not do much with it so far. On a final note, we have a dedicated list for mobile phone and its registration info is in the footer of every AccessIndia mail. We will have to discuss further on this thread only on that list. Re: [AI] Para athletes ordered not to speak to the media reports TOI
Horrible, utterly horrible. On 10/17/14, Sruti disAbility Rights Centre sruti.d...@gmail.com wrote: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/more-sports/others/Para-athletes-ordered-not-to-speak-to-the-media/articleshow/44845067.cms NEW DELHI: In a shocking case of insensitive and highhanded behaviour by sports administrators, the Indian athletes going for Para Asian Games in Incheon (for sportspersons with various disabilities) have been forced to sign a contract which bars them from going to the media with their complaints. Re: [AI] Para athletes ordered not to speak to the media reports TOI
Other regressive and certainly objectionable clauses are also worth-pondering. http://indianexpress.com/article/sports/sport-others/in-official-code-of-conduct-for-para-athletes-let-us-search-your-belongings/99/ Indian athletes participating in the Asian Para Games starting this weekend in South Korea have said that they were made to sign a code of conduct agreement by their national association that includes several unethical clauses, one of which even allows officials to search their belongings at will. All the 87 special athletes in the contingent have signed the document but not before many of them raised objections to these clauses, specifically those that obligates them to give blood samples for HIV testing; provide their complete immunisation history; and let officials search their possessions at the accommodation provided for the Games. The document states that a breach in any term of this agreement will mean losing accreditation for the Games, exclusion from competition and even financial penalties. The Para Games, for special athletes, are being held in Incheon from October 18-24, and follows the Asian Games that were held last month at the same venue. When contacted by The Indian Express, Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) President Rajesh Tomar confirmed that the athletes were asked to sign the agreement before they started leaving for Incheon in batches from Tuesday. Tomar said that it was done to ensure discipline and enforce anti-doping measures, and claimed that the agreement was endorsed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). However, an IPC official denied that the world body had ever backed any such agreement. Para athletes from the past and even present able-bodied Olympians have also pointed out that they had never been asked by any association to sign any such undertaking before. Defending the PCI's decision, Tomar said, We had to recall an athlete from the Commonwealth Games after he tested positive; we were told that the syringes were found from the rooms of our athletes there. He added, IPC wants us to do this. We have inserted a few clauses of our own to ensure that these athletes stay disciplined but I am only following orders from the IPC. But IPC's director of media and communications Craig Spence denied that the committee had issed any such orders. Having spoken to my relevant colleagues in anti-doping and medical, I can assure you that none of these guidelines have come from the IPC, Spence clarified through email. A National Anti-Doping Agency official, meanwhile, termed the PCI's anti-doping clause as a crude way of dealing with dope cheats and clarified that at least one of the clauses in the agreement -- letting officials search the athletes' personal possessions -- was outside the guidelines of even the WADA. According to a leading para athlete, who wished to remain anonymous because of a media gag that is part of the agreement, the PCI came up with this document to curb criticism. We were given this document at the last moment and told specifically that only those who sign would go to Incheon. Everyone has signed. They (the officials) had been publicly criticised earlier for the selection and handling of athletes before the Games so this code of conduct ensures that we will stay silent. It's such a complex document that there can always be a case of someone breaking some rule, he said. The clauses in the agreement, not surprisingly, have irked even former Olympians such as ace shooter and London Games bronze medallist Gagan Narang. I have never seen or heard of such a document. We were never made to sign any such document by either the National Rifle Association of India or the Indian Olympic Association, Narang told The Indian Express. Another Olympian shooter Ronjan Sodhi questioned the clause that asked the athletes to provide blood samples. Where is the need for HIV testing? I have never been asked to do any such test, Sodhi said On 10/17/14, avinash shahi shahi88avin...@gmail.com wrote: Horrible, utterly horrible. This gag has been enforced to stop these disabled athletes from gaining sympathy by trying to project themselves as victims through frivolous allegations. The richest country in the world is Switzerland with average wealth per person of $581,000 (Rs.3.49 crores). The top ten richest countries in the world are Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, Australia, France, UK and USA. India's average wealth per person is $4645 (Rs.2.79 lakhs) and the median wealth is $1006 (Rs.60 thousand). An average Swiss citizen is 125 times better off than an average Indian citizen. This is not only true for India but holds good for other countries as well. Globally, the top 1% of the population owns close to 50% of the wealth. Top 10% owns 87% of all wealth. The bottom 50% of the populations barely owns 1% of global wealth. 21% of the global population is classified as middle class- with a wealth of above $10,000 (Rs.6 lakhs) to $100,000 (Rs.60 lakhs). There are 128,200 individuals in the world who are worth more than $50 million (Rs.300 crores). There are 45,200 individuals in the world who are worth more than $100 million (Rs.600 crores). The total wealth of the world is $263 trillion. India's total wealth is $3.6 trillion. We are 18% of the world's population but have wealth of only 1.36%. 2.38 lakh Indians are members of top 1% of global wealth holders. 3.8 million Indians are members of top 10% global wealth holders. 1.82 lakh Indians are worth $ 1 million (Rs.6 crore) or more. 2.3 million (or) 0.3% adult Indians are worth $100,000 (Rs.60 lakhs) or more. For this, you need to train at least 1 blind person who can do the recording. Another point to consider is that the app should be fully compatible with Talkback and there should not be any conflict how various tasks are done by Talkback. We have taken this up too, and it will be available by end of October. - Also, as a bonus, we are adding Navigation feature in the launcher. You will be able to use this to
[AI] Redesign your home with the best from Diwali Bazaar
Those were the days in the school, when during this festive time, we were crazy for popcorn and spicy Chaumin; and visited stalls many times in a day. http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-newdelhi/redesign-your-home-with-the-best-from-diwali-bazaar/article6509014.ece Spoilt for choice:Visitors throng the mela being held at the Blind School on Lodhi Road in New Delhi.- Photos: Meeta Ahlawat A good reason to visit would be to see works of students with learning and physical disabilities If you plan to visit the Diwali Bazaar organised by the Blind Relief Association in the city, make sure you set aside a couple of hours to browse through the treasure trove of items for sale. From traditional clothes, linen, home decor to designer candles, garden stores and food, the fair has something to offer everyone. If you are planning to redecorate your house, it is probably a good idea to pick up quirky items from across stalls and put it together. Wooden mirrors imported from Bali, hand-painted lamps, painted flowerpots and artworks by lesser known artists will give a brand new look to your home. However, if you are looking for a good bargain, don't expect to find one here as many of the products can be found in markets like Sarojini Nagar, Lajpat Nagar and Shankar Market for half the price. A good reason to visit the bazaar would be to see works of students with learning and physical disabilities. Recycling garbage into useful products, turning elephant dung into paper and producing organic jams, preserves and namkeen - the creativity on display is commendable. The stall set up by the Blind Relief Association is a one-stop-shop to pick up all you need to get your house ready for Diwali. Candles, bamboo candle stands, diyas and packaging material are on sale. One of the stalls Coffee Harbour set up by artist Priyanka Oberoi sells hand-painted shoes, bags, pouches and wall paintings and she will be happy to customise them according to the needs. Trendy glow in the dark bags and shoes are sure to be a hit with children. There is also a food court serving vegetarian delicacies, a nice stop for a quick bite. After all the walking, to soothe tired feet, there is a stall set up by the Blind Relief Association in which persons trained in foot therapy will make the pain vanish. The bazaar has been set up on the lawns of the Blind Relief Association campus on Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg (near The Oberoi Hotel). Entry to the exhibition is free and it is open from 10-30 a.m. to 8-00 p.m. till October 20. There is no car or scooter parking available at the venue. However, a shuttle service has been provided from the parking outside gate number 1 and 2 of Pragati Mai -- Avinash Shahi Doctoral student at Centre for Law and Governance JNU Clean India Campaign: Let us also chip in! [AI] Certainly of Interest: The Dark Market for Personal Data By Frank Pasquale
BALTIMORE -- THE reputation business is exploding. Having eroded privacy for decades, shady, poorly regulated data miners, brokers and resellers have now taken creepy classification to a whole new level. They have created lists of victims of sexual assault, and lists of people with sexually transmitted diseases. Lists of people who have Alzheimer's, dementia and AIDS. Lists of the impotent and the depressed. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/17/opinion/the-dark-market-for-personal-data.html?ref=opinion There are lists of impulse buyers. Lists of suckers: gullible consumers who have shown that they are susceptible to vulnerability-based marketing. And lists of those deemed commercially undesirable because they live in or near trailer parks or nursing homes. Not to mention lists of people who have been accused of wrongdoing, even if they were not charged or convicted. Typically sold at a few cents per name, the lists don't have to be particularly reliable to attract eager buyers -- mostly marketers, but also, increasingly, financial institutions vetting customers to guard against fraud, and employers screening potential hires. There are three problems with these lists. First, they are often inaccurate. For example, as The Washington Post reported, an Arkansas woman found her credit history and job prospects wrecked after she was mistakenly listed as a methamphetamine dealer. It took her years to clear her name and find a job. Second, even when the information is accurate, many of the lists have no business being in the hands of retailers, bosses or banks. Having a medical condition, or having been a victim of a crime, is simply not relevant to most employment or credit decisions. Third, people aren't told they are on these lists, so they have no opportunity to correct bad information. The Arkansas woman found out about the inaccurate report only when she was denied a job. She was one of the rare ones. Data-driven hiring practices are under increasing scrutiny, because the data may be a proxy for race, class or disability. For example, in 2011, CVS settled a charge of disability discrimination after a job applicant challenged a personality test that probed mental health issues. But if an employer were to secretly use lists based on inferences about mental health, it would be nearly impossible for an affected applicant to find out what was going on. Secrecy is discrimination's best friend: Unknown unfairness can never be detected, let alone corrected. These problems can't be solved with existing law. The Federal Trade Commission has strained to understand personal data markets -- a $156-billion-a-year industry -- and it can't find out where the data brokers get their information, and whom they sell it to. Hiding behind a veil of trade secrecy, most refuse to divulge this vital information. The market in personal information offers little incentive for accuracy; it matters little to list-buyers whether every entry is accurate -- they need only a certain threshold percentage of hits to improve their targeting. But to individuals wrongly included on derogatory lists, the harm to their reputation is great. Continue reading the main story Continue reading the main story The World Privacy Forum, a research and advocacy organization, estimates that there are about 4,000 data brokers. They range from giants like Acxiom, a publicly traded company that helps marketers target consumer segments, to boutiques like Paramount Lists, which has compiled lists of addicts and debtors. Companies like these vacuum up data from just about any source imaginable: consumer health websites, payday lenders, online surveys, warranty registrations, Internet sweepstakes, loyalty-card data from retailers, charities' donor lists, magazine subscription lists, and information from public records. It's unrealistic to expect individuals to inquire, broker by broker, about their files. Instead, we need to require brokers to make targeted disclosures to consumers. Uncovering problems in Big Data (or decision models based on that data) should not be a burden we expect individuals to solve on their own. Privacy protections in other areas of the law can and should be extended to cover consumer data. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or Hipaa, obliges doctors and hospitals to give patients access to their records. The Fair Credit Reporting Act gives loan and job applicants, among others, a right to access, correct and annotate files maintained by credit reporting agencies. It is time to modernize these laws by applying them to all companies that peddle sensitive personal information. If the laws cover only a narrow range of entities, they may as well be dead letters. For example, protections in Hipaa don't govern the health profiles that are compiled and traded by data brokers, which can learn a great deal about our health even without access to medical records. Congress should require data brokers to register

[AI] Scheme to check blindness under review
NEW DELHI, October 18, 2014 Scheme to check blindness under review Special Correspondent Harsh Vardhan Harsh Vardhan With 30,000 fresh cases of blindness being reported in the country every year, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Harsh Vardhan has announced a review of the National Programme for Control of Blindness (NPCB). A Centrally-funded scheme, the NPCB was launched in 1976 to reduce the prevalence of blindness. However, the rate has not shown appreciable difference even after 28 years, the Minister noted in Bangalore on Thursday. The Rapid Survey on Avoidable Blindness conducted during 2006-07 showed a reduction in the prevalence of avoidable blindness from 1.1 per cent in 2000 to one per cent in 2006. The NPCB has now targeted to bring down the prevalence of blindness to 0.3 per cent by 2020 from the present level of one per cent. While he is pushing for the full utilisation of funds earmarked for the NPCB for the 12th Plan period (2012-17) with the State governments, the Minister is also seeking the help of non-government organisations to promote eye donation. There are many lapses on the part of both donors' families and eye banks in implementing the wishes of a donor. Often the bereaved family members forget to call the eye banks. At other times, the collectors fail to turn up on time, he said at a function. Appreciating the concept of 'vision ambassadors' -- volunteers who act as link between donors and eye banks -- being followed in Bangalore, the Minister said it should be replicated. India has the largest burden of global blindness -- about 3.5 million with 30,000 new cases being added each year. 30,000 fresh cases of blindness being reported in the country every year Comments to: web.thehi...@thehindu.co.in Copyright(c) 2014, The Hindu Clean India Campaign: Let us also chip in!
