[AI] Fwd: Term of the Day: Letter of Credit

2014-10-25 Thread Aravind R
DEFINITION of 'Letter Of Credit'
A letter from a bank guaranteeing that a buyer's payment to a seller
will be received on time and for the correct amount. In the event that
the buyer is unable to make payment on the purchase, the bank will be
required to cover the full or remaining amount of the purchase.

INVESTOPEDIA EXPLAINS 'Letter Of Credit'
Letters of credit are often used in international transactions to
ensure that payment will be received. Due to the nature of
international dealings including factors such as distance, differing
laws in each country and difficulty in knowing each party personally,
the use of letters of credit has become a very important aspect of
international trade. The bank also acts on behalf of the buyer (holder
of letter of credit) by ensuring that the supplier will not be paid
until the bank receives a confirmation that the goods have been
shipped.

COIMBATORE: When Anjum Khan received her PhD on Monday, it meant more
than it does to most doctoral candidates-the 27-year-old lost her
vision at the age of five after an attack of measles and has studied
 entirely in Braille.

Anjum is an assistant professor of English at Avinashilingam
University. Her family moved from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh to
Coimbatore in 1993 for her treatment but doctors said she would never
 regain her vision.

While my parents were thinking what next, the doctors told us about
Avinashilingam school for girls, says Anjum. She began learning
Braille and use audio technology to help her read, write and study.

Her father, Mehmood Khan got a job at a private cement company in
Madukkarai, 27km from Coimbatore. If Anjum had to continue her
studies, Avinashilingam was among the few options as it had facilities
 and faculty to help her.

I decided I would live in hostel and study. It is then that I
realised that to gain something, one has to sacrifice something,
Anjum says. She lived in the hostel for 12 years from Class 6 till she
 finished her postgraduate degree.

After finishing school, Anjum joined the Avinashilingam University for
Women to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. She
finished her masters' degree and applied for her doctoral studies in
2009, says S Kalamani, Anjum's guide and an associate professor in
the department of English, Avinashilingam University. Anjum had to
leave thehostel after her MA, but, regularly visited me every Friday
and told me how her research was progressing, she says.

Anjum's younger brother Abid Ali died in a road accident eight years
ago while she was doing her masters' degree. My father had bought him
a bike to make his commute between college and home easier, says
 Anjum.

It was a difficult time for the family. But, I have faced so much
that I treat happiness and sorrow equally, she says. Anjum has
dedicated her PhD to her brother.

Anjum did her research on 'Ethnic Silhouettes: An Interpretation Of
The Community In Select Works Of M G Vassanji In The Light Of New
Historicism'. She became an assistant professor in January 2013 in the
 university in which she studied.

Besides teaching at the university, Anjum also teaches blind children
Braille and computer operations. I consider teaching a means to reach
 people, she says.

[AI] CCPD Sri. P.K.Pincha has been given additional charge of Chairperson National Trust for Autism, Cerebral palsy, Mental Retardation Multiple Disabilities

2014-10-25 Thread goutham agrawal
Dear friends,
It gives me immense pleasure in sharing with you happy news that the
Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Honourable Mr. P.K.
Pincha has, yesterday evening, been given the additional charge as
Chairperson of The National Trust for the Welfare of Persons with
Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation Multiple Disabilities. He
has assumed this charge with immediate effect.

Let us congratulate Sri.P.K. Pincha on this landmark achievement.
It is the first time in the history of this country that so much trust
and responsibility has been reposed in a visually impaired person,
something which is manifest in the Government of India placing him at
the helm of affairs of two important statutory bodies, namely, as the
Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities and as the
Chairperson of National Trust. Such a distinction achieved by Mr.
Pincha is the result of sheer hard work, efficiency, capabilities and
commitment to the cause of disability.

Truly, this day will go down in the annals of disability history as a
day of the pride and celebration of the visually impaired. As we
rejoice in Mr. Pincha’s achievements, we must take a pledge today to
follow his example and try to maintain the high standards of
performance which have been set by him, performance standards due to
which he has been preferred over scores of sighted persons to hold two
important statutory positions.

2014-10-25 Thread Ram Soni
A visually impaired passenger has to incur more expenditure on driver
not because of his choice, but because of circumstancial compulsions.
Therefore, benefits available to physically impaired persons should be
extended to V.I. It is the political lobby that helps formulating laws
in favour of certain groups, not the actual need. There are physically
impaired persons who cannot drive and their need is greater than those
who could drive. Therefore, laws should be amended to extend this
facilities to others as well.

We all should slot such role models and be motivated to perform in our

 Oct 23, 2014, 06.29AM IST TNN
AGARTALA: A young Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, posted
as sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) in Dhalai district, Tripura, plans
to launch a website for those without vision that will help them in
their career. The officer, Ajit Kumar Yadav, a resident of Kheri
village under Mahendranagar in south Haryana, is himself visually
 challenged.

Tripura chief secretary G Kameswar Rao said he is happy to get such an
efficient, energetic and dedicated officer in the newly formed
sub-division of the most backward district in the state. He may not
be blessed with eyesight, but his vision to run the administration is
no less sharp than any one of us.

Yadav can use his mobile and laptop with the help of
specially-developed software. The software enables him to identify the
caller from his contact list. Similarly, this software-aided computer
helps him to run the administration. The website will be based on this
 software.

Ajit lost his vision when he was just five. A bout of acute diarrhoea
left him visionless for the rest of his life. But he went on to
complete his studies from Springdale School in New Delhi and always
 came first in class.

I was a topper in the Class X board exams. After completing my
masters in political science from Ramjas College, Delhi University, I
began teaching at a government school in Haryana. Thereafter I cleared
the UGC NET-JRF and joined the Shyamlal College of Delhi University as
assistant professor. But my career took off in 2005, recalled Yadav.

In 2005, when the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh opened the doors
of IAS to the visually impaired, Yadav was motivated to join the
administration. He cleared the IAS in 2008. But the road to the
 administrative service was not smooth.

After clearing the Civil Service Exam, I kept waiting for a letter of
induction into the prestigious IAS. Instead, I was offered a post in
the Indian Railways Personnel Service. I fought back and filed a case
against the discrimination in the central administrative tribunal
(CAT). CAT ruled in my favour in 2010. But still I did not get an
 appointment letter, said Yadav.

However, he didn't get disappointed and kept on fighting for justice
and finally at the intervention of the National Platform for the
Rights of the Disabled (NPRD), CPM MP Brinda Karat and the Prime
Minister, seven of the nine visually impaired candidates received
 their appointment letters.

Yadav joined as joint secretary of industry in Tripura in 2012.
Recently, he was posted in Ambassa with his consent as chief minister
Manik Sarkar was concerned about his convenience. But he accepted the
 post gladly.

Hello sir,
at the first instance, could you please let us know which browser and
screen reader do you prefer while accessing the front line website? the
following lines assume that you are using Mozilla Firefox with NVDA for
this purpose. in this case, the accessibility is not at all a concern. just
click on the desired article, wait for the page to load. once it is loaded,
press B to find the fullpage button, and activate it. there you go, all the
contents will be pretty much accessible. to support my assertion, I would
like to mention the following details of an article in terms of clarity
the title of the article: An obsession to sell
Author: C.P. CHANDRASEKHAR
The document contains: 1893 words
Last paragraph: In sum, while adherence to the neoliberal agenda is
accelerating the process of privatisation under the NDA, that process
remains fiscally irrational and unsustainable, and amounts to a way of
enriching the corporate sector at the expense of the exchequer. On the
other hand, it is bound to adversely affect workers employed in the public
sector, who will lose the hard-won right to a decent livelihood that
permanent public sector employment offers.

Pincha's achievements, we must take a pledge today to
follow his example and try to maintain the high standards of
performance which have been set by him, performance standards due to
which he has been preferred over scores of sighted persons to hold two
important statutory positions.

 Hi,
I use a Braille watch, which I purchased from a local Titan store.

It actually can't be called a Braille watch, because in actuality,
there is no written Braille, only tactile markings.
Even if you are not a good Braille reader, you can use this watch
efficiently. I have been using it for more than a year now, and its
advantage is that it can serve you even in noisy environments.
However, if members know of sturdy and good quality watches which have
tactile markings as well as audio time announcement, then do share, I
would consider that as a watch I could buy in the future.
By the way, if you are afraid of buying a tactile/Braille watch
because you fear moving the hands of the watch, then do not worry,
since you will need to touch the watch very lightly and gently to know
the time, 99.9% of the times, nothing should happen to the hands.

Re: [AI] Difficulty in reading Frontline Magazine

2014-10-25 Thread BIKRAMADITYA BEHERA
The similar inconvenience is also evident in my case. However, after
confronting with such an annoying issue, I could figure out that it only
occurs when JAWS encounters the imbedded flash content on the page of
certain websites thereby stopping the interaction of the flash player plug
in with the browser. ever since I have upgraded to the Adobe Flash player
version 15, I started experiencing instant crashing of Firefox as soon as
it encounters the imbedded object on any webpage. even when I open an
e-mail containing the attachment, I experience the same, and when I check
the processes list on the task manager, I discover the flash player plug in
there. this is how I came to know that it's only the flash player issue.
you may consider downgrading your version of flash player to improve the
experience. alternatively, you can use NVDA while visiting such sites in
order to avoid such crashing. there is another way around as well, where
you just need to turn on NVDA while the application is in crashed
condition, press any key such as down arrow, Tab or anything else. if it
works, I mean if the screen reader responds accordingly, just quit NVDA
using Insert+Q, and JAWS will behave normally regardless of any website
until you close the browser. All these methods are successfully tasted in
Firefox since I use it as my primary web browser. But you can surely give
it a try. I think it will work there as well because the issue is identical.

you may consider downgrading your version of flash player to improve the
experience. alternatively, you can use NVDA while visiting such sites in
order to avoid such crashing. there is another way around as well, where
you just need to turn on NVDA while the application is in crashed
condition, press any key such as down arrow, Tab or anything else. if it
works, I mean if the screen reader responds accordingly, just quit NVDA
using Insert+Q, and JAWS will behave normally regardless of any website
until you close the browser. All these methods are successfully tasted in
Firefox since I use it as my primary web browser. But you can surely give
it a try. I think it will work there as well because the issue is
 identical.
